ADVANCED PLACEMENT LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION
AP Night – January 23, 2014
What is AP Lang?
An AP course in English Language and Composition engages students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of rhetorical contexts, and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Both their writing and their reading should make students aware of the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience expectations, and subjects, as well as the way genre conventions and the resources of language contribute to effectiveness in writing (College Board, 2010).
AP Lang is a COLLEGE COURSE.
Students in AP Lang receive credit for two courses: AP Lang/Comp and 11th grade American Literature.
This is a rigorous college class, so the expectations are much higher than those of your 9th and 10th
grade honors lit classes.
What are the grade requirements for AP Lang?
85 or above in
10th grade Honors Lit
OR
95 or above in
10th grade On-Level Lit
Be aware!Because of the increase in rigor at the AP
level, many students find that their grades in AP Lang are lower than the scores to which they have become accustomed.
What do we study in AP Lang?
Students will learn how to use and analyze effective rhetoric.
Students will read complex passages of literature, non-fiction works, and rhetoric and explore a deep connection between content and method.
Students must be able to express this understanding in a clear, mature writing style.
Students must recognize and formulate opinions and persuasive techniques.
Students will actively engage in Socratic style seminars where they will take argumentative stances, and they will be challenged to reasonably support their choices.
The AP Lang Commitment Students in AP Lang will
read more widely, more closely, and write more than they ever have before. This is a college level course with mature themes and requirements. Students will be called on to develop a mature academic perspective and academic voice in their speech and writing. Success requires a great deal of commitment.
