Don’t forget! Terminal velocity experiment for HOMEWORK
Due Wednesday 17th October
Graph + conclusion

Do now! On each table are a list of statements about gravity. In your groups can you
decide which are true and which are false?
![Page 3: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
True or false?
• If the earth stopped spinning we would float into space.• There is no gravity on the moon.• NASA have an anti-gravity room where gravity can be turned off
and people can float.• It is possible to shield the force of gravity by using lead or other
materials.• Isaac Newton discovered gravity.• Nottingham Forest won the Champions league in 1979 and 1980.• You have no mass in space.• There is no gravity in space because you are far from the earth.• Weight is measured in kilograms.• There is no gravity in space because space is a vacuum.• If we could suck all the air out of the classroom, we would float
around.
![Page 4: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)

Only this one is true!

Gravity
What is gravity?
![Page 8: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Gravity
Gravity is a force between ALL objects!

Gravity
![Page 9: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
GravityGravity is a very weak force.
The force of gravitational attraction between Mr Porter and his wife (when 1 metre apart) is only around 0.0000004 Newtons!
![Page 10: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Gravity
The size of the force depends on the mass of the objects. The bigger they are, the bigger the force!
Small attractive force
Bigger attractive force
![Page 11: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Gravity
The size of the force also depends on the distance between the objects.
![Page 12: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
GravityThe force of gravity has a special name.
Do you know what it is?
![Page 13: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Gravity
We only really notice the gravitational attraction to big objects!
Hola! ¿Como estas?
![Page 14: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Gravity
The force of gravity on something is called its weight. Because it is a force it is measured in Newtons.
Weight
![Page 15: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Gravity
On the earth, Mr Porter’s weight is around 800 N.
800 N
I love physics!
![Page 16: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Gravity
On the moon, his weight is around 130 N.
Why?
130 N
![Page 17: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Gravity
In deep space, far away from any planets or stars his weight is almost zero. (He is weightless). Why?
Cool!
![Page 18: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Mass
Mass is a measure of the amount of material an object is made of. It is measured in kilograms.
![Page 19: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Mass
Mr Porter has a mass of around 80 kg. This means he is made of 80 kg of blood, bones, hair and poo!
80kg
![Page 20: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Mass
On the moon, Mr Porter hasn’t changed (he’s still Mr Porter!). That means he still is made of 80 kg of blood, bones, hair and poo!
80kg
![Page 21: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Gravity
In deep space, Mr Porter still hasn’t changed (he’s still Mr Porter!). That means he still is made of 80 kg of blood, bones, hair and poo!
80kgI feel sick!
![Page 22: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Mass and weight
Mass is a measure of the amount of material an object is made of. It is measured in kilograms.
Weight is the force of gravity on an object. It is measured in Newtons.
![Page 23: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Connection between mass and weight?
![Page 24: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Calculating weight
The force of gravity on one kilogram is called the gravitational field strength. It s measured in Newtons per kilogram (N/kg)
On the earth, the gravitational field strength is around 10 N/kg
![Page 25: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Calculating weight
To calculate the weight of an object you multiply the object’s mass by the gravitational field strength wherever you are.
Weight (N) = mass (kg) x gravitational field strength (N/kg)
![Page 26: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Example
The gravitational field strength on earth is around 10 N/kg. What is your weight if your mass is 80 kg?
Weight (N) = mass (kg) x gravitational field strength (N/kg)
Weight (N) = 80 kg x 10 N/kg
Weight = 800 N

When you finish??
You can EITHER write 4 questions of your own
about gravity OR write a paragraph decsribing how
life on earth would be different if it had the same
gravitational feild strength as the moon
(about 1/6 th)
![Page 30: Don’t forget !](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032612/568131c8550346895d983061/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Now let’s try some questions!
