Don Tapscott
• Don Tapscott (born 1947) is a Canadian business executive, author, consultant and speaker based in Toronto, Ontario, specializing in business strategy, organizational transformation and the role of technology in business and society. • He is an internationally renowned media authority, writer, consultant and speaker regarding the strategic impact of information technology on innovation, marketing and talent.

• Tapscott is also Adjunct Professor of Management at the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto.
• Tapscott holds a B.Sc. in Psychology and Statistics, and an M.Ed. specializing in Research Methodology. He also holds two honorary Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) granted by the University of Alberta in 2001, and Trent University in 2006.
• Tapscott is chairman of business strategy think tank New Paradigm (now nGenera), which he founded in 1993.

Question: Are we living in the technological and social revolution that Alvin Toffler predicted decades ago?
Answer: It is certainly true, that a new community is replacing the old capitalist industrial order that, with its own emergence, replaced the feudal, agrarian wave. This paradigm shift has implications for business, economics, and all facet of society.

Question: What are some significant business consequences?
Answer: A new sector is emerging from the convergence of the 3-C’s: Computing, Communication, and Content. This sector was worth $1 trillion, divided as follows: 44% computing, 28% communication and another 28% content. It will have grown to an industry of $1.47 trillion, a growth of almost 50%.

Question: Convergence, or business communities, is the new common denominator of economics?
Answer: Yes, Organizations nowadays make use of the so called “Internet” to meet to create value for customers and wealth for their shareholders. This business web (b-web) which can be considered as a universal business platform made up of distinct system of suppliers, distributors, commerce services providers, infrastructure providers, and customers.

The new media has transformed into the base of all other sectors.
The information highway – as a result of convergence – has become the basis of the new economy.
This new media is already changing the arts, how science is conducted, and education.
It changes the very nature of business, how we work, have fun, and probably, the way we think

Question: Wasn’t reengineering also about changing the basic fabric of the organization?
Answer: The objective of many reengineering initiatives is to mold the processes and reduce cost, mainly in relation to people.

Question: Are B-webs direct challenge to organizing?
Answer: B-web is the first significant challenge to the traditional hierarchically & functionally based organization. The corporation is DEAD: long live the B-WEB.

Question: Are electronic communities and b-webs the future of “free” market?
Answer: Yes, their mission is simple: collectively producing products and services through a narrow exchange of information, knowledge, and payments purely online.

Question: Is there a room for middle management in this new model of organization?
Answer: The function and people that are positioned in the middle will have to go up in the value chain, otherwise they will lose their place.

Question: What impact must we expect to see when the net generation joins the workforce?
Answer: Children and youngsters lucky enough to have grown up “digitally” are innovators, well taught in the new media, strongly independent, and globally oriented. When they come into the companies, they will bring a new working culture.

Question: One of your cultural predictions has been a rebirth of community spirit.
Answer: The TV is dead and that’s it. It is being eaten by the Web. The TV sets in the future won’t be more than an additional websites. Personal computers is more and more “interpersonal” - The PC becomes a means of communication.

Question: Kids are better at this than adults?
Answer: For kids, this is just natural; but for adults, it is not. For kids, computers are for normal people, not for closed communities of technological people or computer addicts.
