SYNOPSIS

Aftersixteenyearsasthepastorofthemotherchurch,TienieBenadeisconfrontedwithasteepdeclineinthenumberofchurchgoersandamodernsocietythatisrapidlychanging.Doclergymen,oreventhechurch, still have a role to play in this world? He is trying his best to adapt andmake sense of thechanges,but,intheprocess,heisalienatinghiswifeandchildren.Afteranincidentwithadyingvagrant,Tieniefindshimselfatacrossroads.Wouldhebeabletoregainhisself-confidenceandwinbacktheloveofhis familyandwouldhebebraveenough toprovideguidance tohis congregation in thisnewera?BasedontheplaybyDanaSnyman.

ThisishowIfeelaboutthisopportunitythathadcrossedmypath,toadaptoneofthemostsuccessfulplays,writtenbyoneofthemostbelovedwritersofAfrikaans,DanaSnyman,andtogivelifetoitonthebigscreen.

TheideaofanAfrikaanspastor,comingtotherealisationthathehaslosthiswayandthathedoesn’tknowwherehefitsinwithinthismodernsociety,immediatelyfascinatedme.

I grew up in the countryside, in the late 80s and 90s, and if you grew up in that era and in thatenvironment,itwouldbealmostunimaginablethatanAfrikaanspastorwouldgrapplewiththiskindofturmoil. This raises the question: If a pastor doesn’t knowwhere his place in society is, howwould Iknow?

This film isaboutsomeonewhohas togainbackhis self-confidenceand,whileweaccompanyPastorTienie on this journey, the themes that are explored hold a mirror to the audience. The story asksquestionsand,often,difficultquestionsandthis,inmyopinion,isthefunctionofstorytellingorart,ingeneral. We live in an age where quick fixes are highly valued and, for this reason, our task asstorytellershasbecomeevenmoreimportant.Someonehastoposethequestions,withouthavinganypreconceivedideasofwhattheanswerwillbeoranypromisesthatanswerswillbeprovided.Wemustallowpeopletotalkandwemustencouragethemtothinkandwemuststepoutofourcomfortzonesandstopbeingblindtotheneedsofthepeopleandcommunityclosesttous.Often,wespendsomuchtimeandeffortonthebiggerissuesinsociety,andourownsurvivalwithinthissociety,thatwedonotpayattentiontothesmallstuffanditisexactlythesedetailsthatcanbringyoutoyourknees.

DuringthefilmingofDomineeTienie(PastorTienie),Ihadtheprivilegetoworkwithsomeofthemosttalented people in the industry and each one of themmade such a valuable contribution to the endproduct,thatonecanhonestlysaythatiswasateameffort.Ihavegotimmenserespectfortalentandtherewasanabundanceoftalentduringthisproduction.

Thechainofeventsthatoccursevenbeforethecamera isswitchedon, isaverydelicateprocessandeverypersonthatparticipatesthereinmustnotonlybetalented,butalsoawareofhisorherroleinthecontextofthestory,theproductionandeveryotherco-storytellerontheset. Icanquitehonestlysaythat every person involved in this production understood this fine balance and executed their parteffortlesslyupuntiltheveryend.

I hope that peoplewill go and see the filmwith anopenmind andwould know that,while they arewatchingit,eachandeveryperson,whohasmadeacreativecontributiontothefilm,pouredtheirheartand soul into this story to ensure that the viewerwould join the characters as they embark on thisemotional journey.ThefilmwillentertainaudiencesanditwillchallengethemandprovidethemwithanopportunitytoexperiencesomeofSouthAfrica’sleadingactorsandtechniciansattheirbest.
