TheGoalofRetreat2016

Doctors, Be Ambitious!

This is the theme of this retreat associated with the well-known words of wisdom by William Smith Clark, who is the first president of Sapporo Agricultural College (Current Hokkaido University). We aim to step away from our measurements and discuss for our future, and improve our chances to play a key role in a broad vision.

少年よ、大志を抱け!

お金のためではなく

私欲のためでもなく

名声という空虚な志のためでもなく

人はいかにあるべきか、

その道を全うするために、大志を抱け

Boys, be ambitious! Be ambitious not for money or for selfish aggrandizement, not for that evanescent thing which men call fame. Be ambitious for the attainment of all that a man ought to be.

Appendix : What is AI ? (According to committee’s investigations)

An Artificial Intelligence Introduction Can machine think? Ancient cultures as Greeks or Chinese

already dreamed with intelligent machines as smart as a human being. But it was almost 60 years ago, when the basis of modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) was founded. It was in 1956, at a conference at Dartmouth College, in Hanover, where the term “Artificial Intelligence” was coined, and it was the first conference devoted to this subject. John McCarthy, consider the father of Artificial Intelligence and leader of this conference, defined Artificial Intelligence as “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines” [1].

Since then a lot has changed, artificial intelligence has evolved and had advances in search algorithms, machine learning algorithms and integrating statistical analysis into understanding the world at large. In the recent years, we have been witness of the emergence of sophisticated personal assistants, autonomous driving vehicles, smart home devices or even computer systems that can beat world Chess or Go champions.

AI researches cover a lot of topics in the broad range. John Searle, who is a professor of University of California, Barkley, tried to separate AI with genuine intelligence or not. The former one is called ‘Strong AI’, and another is called ‘Weak AI’. Strong AI has capability for problem- solving for everything and weak AI plays a role in the speculation that does not need almighty capabilities. Fundamental researches about AI are included as strong AI, but the application technologies are utilized around the world [2].

AI now coexists in our daily life, from searching something in the web, to predict the weather or even the fall of stock market prices. So, how the artificial intelligence will change our world in 50 years or more, the question is hard to answer, but not difficult to imagine. The craziest possibilities

Pepper.ThepersonalRobotthatreadsemotions.

have been represented in several Hollywood movies with robots trying to kill less evolved humans. Far from this reality, the future is more optimistic [3].

First of all, the way we interact with our devices will became more natural. Improved speech, voice, video and image recognition will process data in real time and it will allow us to interact with automation systems in transportation, industry or public services. Personal assistants will become more personal and will understand the context of our request. Not only order pizza will be easier, we will be able to have a dialogue and solve problems together. Our houses will be full of intelligent devices, controlled only by the power of our voice or the gestures on our face.

Almost all areas of our life will be cover by an artificial intelligence technology. Autonomous vehicles will cover large routes in a faster, safer and more efficient manner. Medical records enhanced by machine learning and big data techniques will result in personalized and specialized treatments. Elderly will have their own version of caring assistant design for their particular care. Symbiosis between human and machine will restore or even increase our capacities [4].

However, artificial intelligence will also have drawbacks. With cheaper and more effective technologies monopolizing almost all our daily activities, millions of jobs will be obsolete and social conflicts will arise. Then, one question arises by itself, artificial intelligence will make the humans be replaced by intelligent machines? We do not know now, but what is sure is that humans will still be here, and societies will have to adapt.
