    BANI

    Bani is a small glaciated valley located at a height of

    4200 ft in the lap of lofty mountains. Town Bani is flourished along the

    river SEWA. Bani experiences temperate and pollar type of climate.Severe winter and moist summer are the main climatice phenomenon of

    this valley. It is also famous as MINI KASHMIR of Kathua district. It is

    also base camp of treckers for bhaderwah, chamba etc. Bani is marked by

    waterfalls, thick forest patches , gushing streams and medows. BANJAL,

    CHANDEL BHOOND are another famous tourist spots.

    BANJAL

    It is a colouful area with lot of flowers blooming also known as GARDEN

    OF NATURAL FLOWERS.

    CHANDEL

    It is 10 kms from Bani. It is a small valley having spring by the name of

    CHANDEl. There are small orchards of apple, almonds and walnuts.

    PANYALAG

    It is a small town on thee top of HILLS. It is marked by beautiful

    waterfalls, thick forest patches, gushing streams and green medows. It is

    about 7 Kms from BANI.

    DULLANGAL

    It is situated on Bani - Billawar trek. It is a small beautiful valley, 12

    Kms from Bani.

    CHHATARGALLA

    It is the highest point on the Basohli-Bani Bhaderwah road. It is nearly 15

    Kms from SARTHAL.

    SARTHAL

    It is a beautiful meadow situated at a height of 7000 ft which remains

    covered with snow for six monhs. The virgin and beauty of the area casts a

    fascinating spell to any visitor. The area is bounded by snow clad

    mountains. It is connected to Bhaderwah and to Himachal Pardash. It is 20

    Kms from Bani (Block HQ).

    DUGGAN

    It is situated at 7000 ft. It is charming valley spreading to one Kms in

    width and 5 kms in length with fresh water streams flowing from both

    sides. . It is blanked with thick CHIR, DEODHAR and SHRUBS. It

    experiences temperate type of climate. It receives winter rainfall from

    wetern disturbances and summer rainfall from mansoons. Cold winter and

    pleasant summer are the main attractinns of this place.

    This place falls on the way from Bani to Dhaggar. In this area is also

    located one Old Nag Temple from where annual yatra goes to Kailash

    Kund.

    JODIA DI MATA

    Jodia Di Mata is a religious center which is visited by hundreds of pilgrims

    during Navratras. Voluntary groups help in providing basic facilities to

    pilgrims. Situated 4 Kms. From Banjal (Bani, District Kathua), its altitude

    is about 7,000 ft. Jodia Di Mata commands lot of faith of local people. It is

    also a beautiful place, full of natural beauty.

    DHOULA WALI MATA

    Dhoula Wali Mata is a religious center. A large number

    of pilgrims come and offer their prayers, especially during Navratras.

    According to a popular belief, a Shephered once dreamt that Mata had

    come to Mandhi Dhar. He went to Mandhi Dhar where Goddess gave

    Darshan to him as a little girl. The Shepherd started worshipping the

    goddess regularly. It is said that once it snowed very heavily. The

    Shepherd who was a regular worshiper ran to Mandhi Dhar to worship

    her. Realising the difficulty of the shepherd, she said she shall go to where

    Dhouli Wali Mata is situated now. The shepherd built a temple at Dhouli

    Wali Mata. This place is located 10 Kms from Jodia Di Mata at a height of

    6000 ft. People have to treck to reach this beautiful spot. It can be reached

    from Katli (Billawarr), Bhoond (Basohli), Banhore (Mahanpur). Regular

    Bus service is available from Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur, Pathankote to

    reach Billawar, Bhoond, Basohli, Mahanpur. Sarais are available at the

    Shrine.

    BASOHLI

    Basohli is a small town and is a Tehsil Headquarter. It is situated on

    the right bank of River Ravi at an altitude of 1876 ft. It is founded by

    Raja Bhupat Pal sometimes in 1635. It was known for magnificient

    places which are now in ruins and miniatures paintings (Basohli

    Paintings).

    DHAR MAHANPUR

    It is new emerging tourist spot in middle Himalayas. It is 27 Kms from

    Basohli (Tehsil HQ) and 87 Kms from Kathua. It is a ridge blanked with

    thick CHIR, DEODHAR and SHRUBS. It experiences temperate type of

    climate. It receives winter rainfall from wetern disturbances and summer

    rainfall from mansoons. Cold winter and pleasant summer are the main

    attractinns of this place. Many Tourist Melas are organized by the Tourist

    Department of J&K Govt to promote tourism in the area. Tourist Huts are

    also proposed to be constructed.

    SANAN GHAT

    A small town on Basohli-Dhar mahanpurIt is situated at a height of 3700 ft. It

    is a ridge flanked with thick CHIR, DEODAR and SHRUBS. It experiences

    temperate type of climate . Cold winter and pleasant summer are the main

    attractinns of this place.

    RANJIT SAGAR (THEIN) DAM

    Hydro electric Project (Thein Dam) being constructed at the west bank of

    river Ravi by the Govt of Punjab and Himachal Paradesh. It as 6 turbines. It

    is 600 MW Hydel project. The Govt of Punjab, Himachal Paradesh and

    Jammu and Kashmir are the beneficiaries of this Project. Jammu & Kashmir

    has 20% share in this project.Prime Minister Sh Atal Behari Bajpayee has

    inaugurated the project . At present only one turbine is working (producing

    150 MW). The Officers Colony is at Chaper Kandi (Pathankote), 25 Kms

    from Kathua.

    SEWA HYDEL PROJECT

    The 135 MW Sewa Hydel Project is being constructed on the Sewa river,tributary of Ravi River between Ghatti and Maska village in Basohli Tehsil of

    Kathua District.

    Second Phase of Rs 672 Crore SEWA HYDRO-ELECTRIC PROJECT Was

    launched by Minister for Power Mr Surjit Singh Slathia at Mashka in Basohli

    Tehsil of Kathua District. The Project will be completed by the NHPC in five

    years and will generate electric-potential of 120 MWs. The Power generated

    by this Project will go in the pool of National Grid of India. The J&K will

    get due power share from pool.

    CHAMUNDA DEVI

    Chamunda Devi Temple is located near the main chowk in Basohli town. The

    goddess is worshiped here in the shape of Natural rock. It is highly venerated

    by the people.

    Billawar.

    BILLAWAR

    Billawar is Tehsil HQ. It is also known as BALAUR. Billawar was founded

    by Raja Bhopat Pal in 1598-1614 and it remained capital of Basohli Rajas.

    The descendants of the Royal family are known as BILLAWARIAS. The

    town has some ancient monuments. One of these is MahabilvakeshwarTemple, one of the most revered Shiva temples of the area. It was known as

    Hari Hara Temple. The Billawar Town is situated on the Bank of NAAZ and

    BHINNI Nallahs.

    According to one belief, Pandavas visited Billawar in the last year of their

    exile and were attracted by BILL trees in which Billawar abounds. The

    Temple MAHABILVAKESHWAR was built where Pandavas had

    worshipped. The Name BILL lateron turned into BILLAWAR. In Billawar

    there is a an ancient Hanuman's statue built on a rock in the river

    Naaz.According to Dr Sukhdev Singh Charak, Billawar-Bashli was one of the

    three parent/ original states of the DUGGAR Group alongwith Jammu and

    Poonch.

    MACHHEDI

    It is situated at a height of 5000 ft. It is a beautiful Hill Station. It is aridge blanked with thick CHIR, DEODHAR and SHRUBS. It experiences

    temperate type of climate. It receives winter rainfall from wetern

    disturbances and summer rainfall from mansoons. Cold winter and

    pleasant summer are the main attractinns of this place The water of this

    place can be compared with that of Cheshma Sahi (Kashmir). It is 30

    Kms from Billawar (Tehsil HQ). Regular bus service plies from Billawar.

    BHADDU

    A prominent town of Billawar Tehsil, was also once the seat of Imperial

    Power. It was very small state comprising 36 villages. Bhaddu town is situated

    on Bhinni Naalah, a tributary of Ujh river. The descendants of the Royal

    family are called BHADWAL RAJPUTS.

    MANKOTE (PRESENTLY CALLED RAMKOTE)

    It is an importat town in Billawar tehsil. It is situated on a hillock on the bank

    of BASANTER STREAM on Dhar-Udhampur Road. It used to be a small

    state spread over an area of 24 Kms in length and 15 Kms in breadth.Mankote was founded by Raja Manak Dev, a contemporary of Raja Narsingh

    Dev of Jammu (1272-1314 AD). It was renamed by Raja Suchet Singh (1822-

    43 AD) as RAMKOTE.

    SUKRALA MATA

    The Most famous shrine dedicated to mother goddess is Sukrala Devi Shrine

    at a distance of 9.60 Kms from Billawar and about 75 Kms from Kathua. The

    Shrine is located at a height of 3500 ft on a hillock amidst sylevan

    surroundings. The white line coated

    imposing edifice of the temple stands erect

    majestically. The pilgrims have to scale

    flights of many steps to reach venerated

    temple. The holy shrine is the abode of

    goddess Mal Devi, the re-incarnation of

    Sharda Devi. The goddess has manifested

    herself here in the shape of a Shilla (Stone

    Slab) seated on a Brass Lion with a silver

    mounted head. Behind it is also an image of

    Mahishasur Murdini (re-incarnation of

    Maha-Luxmi) standing on the body of

    Mahishasur, the Demon King. The Goddess is four Armed with a sword in

    one of her hands. Many legends are associated with the Shrine. The HolyShrine is believed to have been built by Madho Singh and exiled Prince of

    Chamba (Himachal Pardesh). The Pilgrimage to the Shrine is increasing

    every year. During the Navratras the Number goes upto over 50 thousand.

    SHIV TEMPLE BILLAWAR (MAHABILVA KESHWAR TEMPLE)

    This most famous Shiva Shrine dates back to antiquity. Formerly known as

    the Hari-Hara Temple, it has Shiv Trimurti. Located in the

    Heart of Billawar Town, the temple is called

    Mahabilvaveshwar in view of abundance of Bilva trees in

    the area. It is believed that God Shiva is highly pleased

    when Bilva leaves, known as Bil-patri in local parlance, are

    offered to him. The temple spire is about 60 Ft high over asquare sanctum,. The temple has a number of other images

    like that of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva (5-headed), Ganesh

    and Bhairav. The temple edifice has been built with a

    chiselled and dressed stones which have been crumbling of

    late.

    Also, this temple is very much related to the Maharaja Hari

    Singhs (Dr Karan Singhs father) family. There is an

    old saying that, if there is a mishappening/casuality in this royal family, A

    brick/stone having a spot of blood falls from the temple.

    SHIV TEMPLE, MOONI (BILLAWAR)

    It is situated on the Bank of river BHINNI. The Temple was built by Swamy

    Sh Purangiri ji Maharaj

    KATHUA

    Though there is no detailed and fully documented history of Kathua district.

    It is believed that One Jodh Singh a famous Rajput of Andotra clan migrated

    from HASTINAPUR to KATHUA nearly 2000 years ago and settled here.

    The three Hamlets of Taraf Tajwal, Taraf Manjali and Taraf Bhajwal were

    established by his three sons Viz. Teju, Kindal and Bhaju. Their descendent

    are now called as Tajwalia, Bhajwalia and Khanwalia Rajputs of Andotra

    sub-caste. The conglomeration of these three hamlets was loosely called

    KATHAI in earlier times which with the passage of time came to be called

    as KATHUA

    Kathua is distrit HQ. The town offers a fast blend of the past and present and

    fast developing on modern lines. The town is also on the path of

    industrilization and is presently next only to Jammu & Srinagar cities. The

    biggest Industrial unit is CHENAB TEXTILES MILLS (A BIRLA GROUP).

    DREAM, THE RECREATION PARK, KATHUA

    A Beautiful Recreation Park The Dream has come up along Kathua Canal

    over 24 Kanals of Area, inaugurated by His Excellency The Governor of

    J&K State Gen. (Retd) K.V. Krishna Rao on July 14, 1994. It has been linked

    with a 1.5 Kms long black toppd road, which takes off from Canal Bridge,

    Near District Offices Complex. Water rafting has also been introduced with 2

    boast provided by the Tourism Department.

    UJH BARRAGE

    It is a fast developing beautiful picnic spott. It is about 20 Kms from

    Kathua. A bird sanctuary is being developed on the bank of Ujh river. Ujh

    Barrage was commissioned in 1980-81 to provide irrigation, potential to an

    additional area of district Kathua.

    FORT OF JASROTA & JASROTA TEMPLE

    Once the seat of imperial power was made a wazarat (district) of Jammu

    Provice when Gulab Singh became the Maharaja of Jammu & Kashmir in

    March1846. During the regin of Maharaja Ranbir Singh. Jasrota comprised

    2 tehsils and 13 parganas. Jasrota was founded by Raj Jas Dev of Jammu in

    1019 AD and passed it on to his uncle Raja karan Dev. The rulers of Jasrotathough were Jamwals but were called Jasrotias

    The ancient temple of Maha Kali reconstructed a few years back has also

    emerged as a famous pilgrimage center. The shrine of holy Goddess is

    situated on a hillock on the outskirts of old jasrota village, 5 Kms from

    rajbagh on Jaammu-Kathua road (National Highway) and 20 Kms from

    Kathua.

    MATA SUNDRIKOTE

    The Holy ancient shrine of SHREE MATA BALA SUNDARI

    JI is situated on SHIVALIK HILLS at a height of 1000 Mt.

    From sea level having commanding view of surronding

    Landscpae. It is situated on Old Kathua-Billawar mule track.It is nearly 22 Kms from Kathua and 7 Kms from Parnalla

    (Billawar) on Dhar-Udhampur Road. The route passes

    through picturesque pine forests and wild Bushy Plants. The

    pilgrims have to negotiate 107 steps to reach the shrine. A

    Berry Plant also exists near the temple. It is believed that Idol of Goddess was

    found under this plant which was lateron enshrined in the temple. Regular

    Bus service is available for Kumari and Parnalla from Kathua. Kumari is

    about 13 Kms from Kathua and Parnalla about 55 Kms from kathua. From

    Kumari and Parnalla, Pilgrims have to treck to reach the shrine.

    MATA BALA SUNDRI

    The Historic holy shrine of Bala ji Sundri is situated on the outskirts ofVillage Parole, 13 Kms from Kathua. The temple is situated amidst a grove of

    mango trees. According to legend, one Brahmin was cutting grass and his

    sickle struck with a stone which started oozing blood. A dream at night

    commanded him to place the stone under a Banyan tree for worship. The

    stone considered to be re-incarnation of holy goddess was lateron

    enshrined in the temple. A fair is also held during Navratras. Regular Bus/

    Matador service is available from Kathua.

    AIRWAN TEMPLE

    It is a famous Shiva Temple located at village Airwan near Parole about 15

    Kms. From Kathua. The 4th century old temple is believed to have been

    constructed by King Vikramditya. The Airwan village bears its name after

    the River Ravi. Fairs are held here on Shivratri and Baisakhi. There are large

    number of Bowlies near the temple where the pilgrims take bath before

    worship. People who cannot afford to visit Haridwar immerse ashes of thedead in the holy water known as GUPT GANGA.

    ASHA PURANI MANDHIR, KATHUA

    It is an PRACHIN MANDIR OF KATHUA situated in the heart of city

    (MaIN Bazar).Asha Purani Mandhir is an famous temple of Kathua town

    situated in the heart of City (Main Bazar). It was built by Bhagat Chajju Ram

    in 1949 AD. Mandhir Bhawan is about 30 Ft in height. Its main gate is

    towards North and on the top off the Bhawan, Idol of Mata Durga Ji (10 ft.)

    decorates the temple. There is a ligid that this temple is located on that place

    where the AASH (Veins) of Mata Durga were thrown out by the Sudershan

    Chakra of Lord VISHNU. From there, the Name Asha Purani originated and

    the temple became famous as ASHA PURANI MANDHIR.

    SAPT SAROBER MANDHIR

    It is in Krishna Nagar, W.No.3, KathuaIt was built by Bhagat Chajju Ram in

    1969. Choudhary Hari Singh and Choudhary Devidutta had donated Land

    for the Holy Temple. Sapt-Sarover name is derived form the SAPT-

    RISHIES. Here an Sapt-Sarover is built and the temple in Sarover is also

    built. There is One Pathsalla in the Temple and an Dharamshallas work is

    under construction.

    PEER CHATTERSHAH (NAGRI-PAROLE)

    It is located near Parole about 13 kms from kathua. A bath in the spring near

    the SHRINE (BOLIES) is considered to cure skin diseases.

    GURDWARA SINGH SABHA, KATHUA

    It is situated in the heart of Kathua Town (City Chowk). There is an sarai

    (free of cost) where rooms are available.

    HIRANAGAR

    HIRANAGAR is a Tehsil HQ. Raja Hari Singh is believed to have founded

    Hiranagar Town after his name when he was

    bestowed with the Jagir of Jasrota by MaharajaRanjit Singh of Punjab (1834-44 AD). He also

    renovated the Jasmergarh Fort situated between

    Tarnah and Bein Nallahs. The fort also housed

    Tehsil and Other Govt Offices till they were shifted

    to Hiranagar after 1947. The town has a fast

    Developing Industrial Estate and a Modern

    Industrial Training Institute.

    NARSINGH JI TEMPLE, GHAGWAL

    Narsingh (The Narshima), the reincarnation of Bhagwan Vishnu in his

    unified form of Lion and Man has been artistically idolized in a temple at

    Ghagwal. This is an anicient temple built in 1600 years back. The

    DARSHNIK three Idols here are NARSINGH-AVTAAR, NARSINGH-

    ROOP and ANNPURANA which are located (together) at Narsingh Temple,

    Ghagwal in INDIA only. There is also JINDA SAMADHI of BAWA NAR-

    HARI DASS Ji Maharaj. Narsingh Temple Ghagwal is MAHA

    MANDLESHWAR GADDI which is known as SH AMARNATH JAMMU-KASHMIR NAGAR KHALSA. In every KUMBH MELA at NASIK,

    HARIDWAr, UJJAIN, PRAYAGRAJ (Illahabad), SH AMARNATH

    JAMMU KASHMIR NAGAR KHALSA is Installed, in which thousands of

    Sadhus and other public used to stay for more than one month. Ghagwal is

    located on Jammu-Pathankote National Highway, 35 Kms from kathua.

    Regular Bus service plies from Kathua, jammu, samba, udhampur,

    pathankote. A small Railway Station is also in the Ghagwal Town.

    Narsingh Ji Temple is most popular and rare temple of its type with a huge

    water pond near it.The Idoal of MAA ANNPURNA is also there in her

    unified form. Daily more than 200 hundred people/Sadhus take

    Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner in the temple. It is an old belief that due to MAAANNPURNs Blessing, ANN shortage have never occurred there. Fairs are

    held on Janamasthmi and Makarsakranti & RathaKhara (December 26-27tth

    of every year). During the fairs, people from hilly areas organize sails of their

    woolen products including blankets and handicrafts etc. The Mehant of this

    Temple is Mehant Sh Narsingh Dass Ji, MAHAMANDLESHWAR, J&K

    Jamia Masjid: The Jamia Masj id of Kishtwar is the o ldest mosque in d istr ict

    K ishtwar . I t has a l ready been sa id that a mosque had been constructed inKishtwar before 1650 A.D. Masjid-e-Faridiya and Jamia Masjid Kishtwar fol low.The Jamia Mas jid o f K ish twar was one o f the b iggest mosques in Jammuprovince. Its premises are vast. The Musl ims of Kishtwar had constructed agrand Jamia Masj id with great d i l igence and sacr i fices. The new Jamia Masj idsha l l be a three s tore yard complex w i th two minarets o f 130 feet he ight .Musl ims in each mohal la and v i l lage have constructed a mosque for worship.the devout among them perform 'Namaz' f ive times a day. The regular 'Azaan'from mosques reminds every believer of the existence of God and man's dutyto pay his obeisance to him. The Jamia Masjid Kishtwar is the biggest and thetower ing mosque in the hear t o f c i ty . i ts construct ion was, f i r s t s tar ted in1941 A.D. i ts two minarets were as ta l l as 60 ft . each. unfor tunately , themosque got gutted in a myster ious f i re on the n ight o f 1s t January 2001,putting every one under pall of gloom.

    Ziarat Shah Fadid-Ud-Din: A ziarat constructed over a tomb of shah Far id-ud-Din, a great Musl im saint and is s i tuated in the heart of Kishtwar town. Itis bel ieved that shah Far id-ud-din came to Kishtwar dur ing the re ign of RajaJai S ingh to propogate Is lam. He hai led from Baghdad and came to India inthe t imes o f Mughal emperor . He is s tated to have done many miracu lousdeeds and big fair is held here on the 7th.ashad every year.
