6.Process of Deposition of Sediments in the rivers of the District:

There are some important factors which are responsible for the process of

sedimentation in a river basin are the stage of river development (the infant, youth, mature or

old stage), lithology and structures of the upstream region or provenance from where

sediments eroded/migrated/travelled, geomorphology and gradient of provenance,

anthropogenic activities such as mining, industrialization and mega engineering projects such

as Dam also affects the process of sedimentation and the thickness of the sequence is

determined by the depth of the stream channel during flood stage and is related to the size of

river itself. The major river of the district is Arpa. The river originates in Khodri-Khongsara

of Pendra sub-division and is the largest river in the district and is about 100km long. It is

very shallow in depth but sometimes it creates havoc during rain. Other major rivers of the

district are Leelagar and Maniyari.

11.Geology and Mineral wealth:

In Bilaspur district rock formations ranging in age from Archean to recent times are

exposed in the area. They include granites, gneisses and older metamorphic of the

Precambrian age, rocks of Chhattisgarh Super group of upper proterozoic age, Gondwanas of

Permian age, Lametas of Upper Cretaceous age, Deccan trap of upper cretaceous to Eocene

age and laterite of Cainozoic age. The Chhota Nagpur Gneissic complex of Archean to

proterozoic age comprises of unclassified granites and granite gneisses, with enclaves of

older 47etamorphic – Phyllites, Quartzites, Schists and dolomitic marble. This group is

exposed in northern part of the area.

The Chhattisgarh Super group of the rocks occurring in the south unconformably

overlie the Precambrian basement. The Chhattisgarh Super group is divided into Chandarpur

and Raipur groups. The Chandarpur Group comprises sandstone and conglomerate.

Unclassified Raipur group comprising of shale and limestone occurs in the central and south

central part, whereas in the south-eastern part this Group is represented by the rocks of

Gunderdehi Formation, Chandi Formation, Tarenga Formation and Kodwa Formation.

Gunderdehi Formation is represented by grey shale, shale and limestone with intra

formational conglomerate. Chandi Formation is comprised of grey, hard and compact shale

and pink dolomite. Tarenga Formation comprises of clay, chert, shale, red calc- argillite,

argillaceous dolomite. Kodwa formation is represented by grey argillaceous dolomite.

Gondwana Super group is represented by the rocks of Talchir Formation and Barakar

Formation of Lower Permian age. Talchir Formation occupies the northern most part of the

district and is composed of buff and Khakhi green shale with splintery fragments, Grayish

white, fine to medium grained sandstone and boulder bed that comprises of subangular clasts

of quartzite and gneiss in greyish, fine to medium grained matrix. Barakar Formation consists

of greyish white, fine to coarse grained, cross bedded massive sandstone, grey shale, blackish

grey carbonaceous shale, light yellow to creamy white clay with coal seams. It occurs in the

northern most part of the district.

Lameta Formation is exposed in the NW part of the district at the foothill of

Amarkantak Plateau. It comprises ash grey coloured cherty/siliceous limestone and greenish

feldspathic (arkosic) sandstone with very thin bands of red clay- variegated in nature.

Deccan Trap of Upper Cretaceous to Eocene age is exposed in wet and north western

parts of the district overlying the Lametas. The Basalt flows are dark grey, fine to medium

grained, hard and compact.

Laterite and bauxitic laterite of Cainozoic age are observed on basalts in the west and

north western parts of the district. The development of the reddish brown, hard and compact

lateritic profile is due to weathering of the trap rocks which subsequently has resulted in the

formation of bauxite Zones.

Mineral wealth of Bilaspur district:

The Bilaspur district has number of significant mineral deposits. Most of the areas of

district is furnished with Limestone and Dolomite. Chilhati area of the district is one of the

largest cement grade deposits of the State. Dolomite deposits are reported from no. of places

out of which Hirri, Pachperi, Pataidih, Manikchauri, Kaochi, and salfa are important. Despite

this Feldspar deposits are reported from Sadhwani, Tikarkhard, Chaktipani, and Pidha. White

clay as an alteration of granites and gneisses is reported from Jogisar.
