Eastern Illinois University will continue to be a fantastic host for our festivals this Fall. Jeremy McBain, events coordinator is a fantastic liaison for us and makes sure things run well.

EIU 2012

District 5 educators are amazingly talented and motivated. Through every season, performing ensembles and groups showcase their talents, and individual students are encouraged to reach their peak. Our membership is strong, and that is a direct reflection of the professionals who are members.

I encourage you to become involved, both at the district level, and also at the state level. There is always

a need for new ideas and fresh personalities. Get involved, stay informed, and urge your colleagues and friends in neighboring schools to participate in IMEA activities. Their students will benefit, and we all know that increased senior level participation allows for more District 5 students at All-State.

This Fall, contact a new teacher in your area and share information with them regarding IMEA and our activities.

We are always looking for local workshop presenters for our fall festivals. If you are willing to present, or have seen a clinic recently that you think might be beneficial

to other educators in our area, please contact Professional Development Chair Rae Ann DeSutter [email protected]

IMEA   is   pleased   to   announce   that  we  have  added  a  remix  category  to  our   popular   statewide   composition  contest   for   high   school   students!  We   are   also   very   excited   to  announce   that   platinum-selling  artist,  Moby,   is   encouraging   Illinois  high   school   students   to   remix   a  song   from   his   latest  album,  Destroyed.   Additionally,  Moby  will  listen  to  some  of  the  best

remixes!  With  the  amount  of  access

music  software,  we  believe  that  this  contest   is   important   in   recognizing  the   various  ways   in  which   children  both  consume  and  compose  music.  It   is   our   hope   that   the   remix  category   will   encourage   lots   of  students  to  share  their  talents  with  other   students,   teachers,   and  musicians  from  all  over  the  state.

We trust everyone is off the running for another successful school year! As we get going, a few reminders for our upcoming auditions and District Festival. PL E ASE R E A D T H E E N T IR E M ESSA G E! --Students auditioning for Senior Choir are expected to be prepared on A L L titles (not just the State pieces). Signs will be posted the day of auditions on which two (2) pieces will be required for auditions. --Students are also expected to know A L L scales and triads. Please see the IMEA website for further information on Tonal Skills. http://www.ilmea.org/divisions/chorus/senior-tonal-skills-study-guide/ --Deadline for submitting students to audition is Wednesday, September 26th. After this time, the Sr. Choir reps will begin working on the audition schedule. REMEMBER No Check, No Audition. You must submit your check to Chris Gunn before this deadline. --Senior Choir auditions will be on a timed schedule again this year. We will do our best to keep true to the times sent to the directors. --If you have students that need a specific time slot due to conflicts or travel, you MUST submit those requests to the Sr. Choir Reps before the entry deadline (9-26). After this time, requests will not be honored, as the master schedule will be in the works. --As discussed at the division meeting in November, and per the State Office:

O NL Y if that student has a score within reason of the initial cut- --Each school is also responsible for making sure students are supervised in the cafeteria at all times. You may consider an additional chaperone. **N E W F O R JUD G ES** --After much discussion with other districts about their judging system, and talking the logistics over with all involved, the following information will be used for Sr. Choir judges:

--Judges will continue to score on paper --A Sr. Choir Rep will collect score sheets during the day and input them into the computer to stay ahead of the game. --When a room is finished, all 3 judges from that voice part will meet in the Library to look over scores that have been imputed. They will then discuss students that have tied scores and determine how the tie will be broken.

We feel this will eliminate any question about being judging students. Once agai See you in October! Christopher and Warren

Arr. Rollo Dilworth Hal Leonard Publishing American Folk Rhapsody Arr. Linda Spevacek Heritage Press Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow! Arr. Mark Hayes Shawnee Press Furaha! Sally Albrecht Alfred Publishing The IMEA District V JEM Music Festival is an annual music festival held at Eastern Illinois University open to 5th and 6th grade students with unchanged voices. This festival is a fabulous opportunity to give your exceptional students the chance to work with many other talented young musicians from Central Illinois in a large group choral music setting. During this time, we are also planning to hold a choral music reading

your talented singers as well as reenergize yourself in this wonderful day of music making! There are no auditions for this festival; students are selected through a teacher nomination process. We welcome you to nominate students for consideration for the 2012 JEM Festival through RNS in the fall. (We recommend that you nominate the top 10-15% of your choir.) The festival schedule begins with registration at 11:30, rehearsals starting promptly at 12:00, and ends with the concert at 6:00 pm open to the public. We know that budgets are really tight. Here are ways that this day can be cost effective for you and your school:

1) $10 fee per accepted student (plus IMEA participating schools fee) 2) Repeating some pieces from previous festivals you may already have some of them in your

library! 3) Groups are encouraged to take sack suppers for the break before the concert.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or e-mail Jennifer or Juliane. We look forward to your nominations for the 2012 JEM Choral Festival and seeing you and your talented students there in the fall!
