Issue 21 Thursday November 21, 2019

Hopetoun residents are urged to think twice about what they flush down the toilet or wash down the sink today on World Toilet Day after a 100 kilogram ‘pipe monster’ was found blocking the local wastewater system.

Water Corporation Great Southern Regional Manager Adrian Stewart said wastewater blockages, also referred to as ‘pipe monsters’, had caused havoc in the local wastewater system.

“Items like socks, jocks, wet wipes, nappies and plastic bags should not be flushed down the toilet as this material does not break down like toilet paper,” Mr Stewart said.

“Service crews remove between 200 to 300 kilograms of material causing blockages in the local wastewater system each year – just like the 100 kilogram ‘pipe monster’ we had to get a crane to pull out recently, which makes it a costly exercise.

“Even if you think it’s ‘just this once’, remember if every person thought the same we would have blockages everywhere and that can impact our ability to safely take away wastewater to be treated.

Mr Stewart also said it was important to not pour fat, oil or grease straight down the kitchen sink as once cooled it solidified and caused blockages.

“This will not only help protect the environment and our wastewater system, but also potentially save you money from having to call a plumber to fix any blockages that can happen within your home,” he said.

“This year’s theme for World Toilet Day is ‘Leaving no one behind’ – we urge Esperance residents to not take this infrastructure for granted and to help look after it as remember not everyone across the globe has access to clean sanitation.

“Just remember, only soap and water down the sink, and paper, pee and poo down the loo.”

Water Corporation maintains around 11 kilometres of wastewater mains in Hopetoun, and residents and businesses play an important part in helping to protect this important part of Esperance’s infrastructure.

■ My Marathon

We had over 50 participants registered with the Hopetoun Progress (HPA) My Marathon team and WOW what achievements we accomplished. Our aims for the project were to gain maximum participation and inclusion of people of all ages. Our focus was community health and wellbeing, creating awareness around heart health and maybe raising some money along the way.We set some goals of which we smashed and should be very proud. 64 companies registered in the My Marathon challenge 2019 and Hopetoun Progress came 4th on the fundraising ladder, raising over $7500!!! Thank you to all that supported our team and donated to the Heart Foundation.A huge congratulations to Karen Campbell who clocked up the most kilometres, a huge 212.9km!!! That is more than 5 marathons. Karen says that “she doubted her ability to make the target of 42.2km within the month.” Once Karen hit the My Marathon target, she dedicated the day to her brother, whom had a triple bypass in December 2016, and the day she cracked 100km was about her Dad who passed away 22 years ago after a heart attack. Her motivation kept many other participants moving.A special mention and congratulations to Tim Flannagan who hit the lead early walking 52.5 km in the first day, walking Hopetoun to Ravensthorpe. He raised over $1600!!Congratulations also to Donna Higgins who set a goal to walk 4 marathons within 4 weeks of which she accomplished. HPA also wanted to recognise all the dogs that were out walking the My Marathon challenge with their owners and ran a photo competition. Our judge was the newly appointed tourism Officer, Zara. Thank you to all those that entered and to Zarah for making the hard call and for Dave from Posh Pooch for donating the prize. Hank our My Marathon Dog 2019 will be in for a huge shock when he gets a good wash and dry. The project was not without its challenges, with many participants frequently visiting due to technical issues however such fun it was. :)A massive thank you to all that took part in My Marathon 2019 we look forward to seeing you all again in 2020.

And that’s a wrap!

Word of the Dayofficious adjective | uh-FISH-usDefinition:1 : volunteering one’s services where they are neither asked nor needed : meddlesome2 : informal, unofficial

Did You Know? Don’t mistake officious for a rare synonym of official. Both words stem from the Latin noun officium (meaning “service” or “office”), but they have very different meanings. When the suffix -osus (“full of”) was added to officium, Latin officiosus came into being, meaning “eager to serve, help, or perform a duty.” When this adjective was borrowed into English as officious in the 15th century it described dutiful people and their actions. That use shifted a bit semantically to describe those eager to help or serve. By the late 16th century, however, officious was beginning to develop a negative sense describing a person who offers unwanted help. This pejorative sense has driven out the original “dutiful” and “eager to help” senses to become the predominant meaning of the word in modern English. Officious can also mean “of an informal or unauthorized nature,” but that sense is not common.

On Sunday October 20th Ravensthorpe St John held our inaugural heart health awareness seminar called Shocktober. The purpose of Shocktober is to help educate our community on the importance of good heart health and being proactive about our approach to combatting heart disease.

We had roughly 80 people including our volunteers attend the day. We asked every child who walked through the doors had they ever practiced doing CPR? 40% of children answered yes and 60% had heard about it but had never had a go. We also asked every adult had they completed a first aid course in the last two years, we were surprised to learn that only 50% had.

We wanted to add an element of fun to the way we train first aid so we got hold of a CPR racing game. We had four CPR manikins which connected to a television via Bluetooth, each manikin was a different coloured car on the racing car track. The better quality the compressions the faster your car raced. This was so much fun and a great way to get the kids to have a go. We were absolutely speechless!

Cooper Smallman (10 yrs) scored a near perfect 99.31% followed closely by his older brother Jarvis Smallman (13yrs) 96.81%. The big kids couldn’t help but have a go—Helen Burton scored a solid 99.1% and one of our youngest recruits from North Ravensthorpe, Georgia Guest, performed the highest out of the team in green.

“They made a game of a serious medical emergency seem fun to hook you in and make you practice CPR” – Mitch (11 yrs)

The Hopetoun CRC showcased the latest in Virtual Reality Technology. Participants were invited to experience “ShareCare”, a real-time simulation of the human body that allows anyone to freely navigate and explore an anatomically accurate, 3D model of the human heart, inside and out. VR is interactive, immersive, and versatile. Sharecare’s award winning content delivers medically-accurate anatomy, physiology, disease, and treatment simulations in stunning 3D detail.

We had a very special guest, Kura the Ambulance Paramedic Bear, travel all the way from Perth to entertain our younger generation. We had a variety of kid’s activities, loads of games and giveaways.

Kura hosted story time and read a book called 000. Story time is a weekly event hosted by the Hopetoun CRC. The following morning at Storytime the kids read “Is this an emergency, Ambulance” and made little Kura the Ambulance Paramedic Bear face masks for the children.

Dr Manus Lochner was one of our guest speakers. Dr Lochner spoke about his experience performing open heart surgery then dissected a heart and explained the mechanics of how a heart works.

“Dr Manus dissected a sheep’s heart—I learnt about the different parts of the heart and I saw how it actually worked. He showed me the arteries and I saw all the fat around the heart. It was fascinating”. – Toby (9 yrs)

Local artist Beryl Semple from Windspray Art kindly judged our heart art competition. We were delighted at the effort and creativity from the entrants. The winners of our competition were:

Category 5 – 10 Years: 1st place – My Heart by Kasyn Maxwell; 2nd place – Mandala by Maddelyn and Chloe Sinagra.

Category 10 – 16 Years: 1st place – Ambulance Officer by Brianna Sinagra; 2nd place – Hearty by the Sea by Olivia Bingham.

Category 16 Years and up: 1st place – Love your Heart by Clair Balasuberian; 2nd place – Is it real? Janet Lee

Our second guest speaker for the day was Community Paramedic from Katanning Sonia Brooker, commonly referred to as the Cardiac Queen of the Great Southern. Sonia’s presentation included a huge 3D model of the human heart and spoke about how the heart works, angina and heart attack. What fascinated us most was how she explained the “defib zone” and talked us through what happens within the first 10 minutes of a Cardiac Arrest.

“It was very interesting and enlightening. I learnt about the effects other things have on your heart and how your lifestyle choices can improve your heart health.” – Ursella (85 yrs)

Our volunteer ambulance offices showcased our new IMPACT CPR protocol—our skills and knowledge are continuously evolving within the ambulance service and we want to help educate the community on what we are doing and why. The first 10mins of cardiac arrest are vital and this is where

the community has to get involved. Good quality bystander CPR absolutely saves lives so our goal is to have as many people as possible learn and practice CPR and use the St John Ambulance first responder app.

“The dedication and commitment of the volunteers down here to their community and promoting health is phenomenal, I’m humbled to be working with such an amazing generous bunch of people. You couldn’t be in better hands” – Michelle Fyfe Community Paramedic Ravensthorpe.

We would like to thank all our sponsors and partners for the ongoing support and hope to see you at our next Shocktober event in 2020. Please ensure you have downloaded the First Responder App on your smartphone and stay up to date with your first aid.

To help keep our community safe and educated we are offering you 20% off your next HLTAID003 – Provide First Aid or HLTAID004 – Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting course when you mention codename: SHOCKTOBER. Offer valid to December 31st, 2019.

■ Jerdacuttup Primary School

Jerdacuttup Primary was fortunate to again have Samuel Newman attend school to make some noise. Sam arrived with a myriad of musical instruments, synthesisers, microphones, cameras—a real production studio, and spent the entire day of Thursday November 7th sharing his expertise and enthusiasm.

Sam’s brief was to incorporate this year’s theme of Indigenous Studies to create a song and video promoting some of the pre-primary to year five students’ learning associated with the theme. The process included a ‘free session’ using the variety of instruments and synthesisers.

Children were able to discover the range of sounds using the various knobs, dials and switches on the electronic instruments and to use our custom made tapping sticks. Sam then spent time recording individuals using the equipment—making music based on specific sounds, e.g. dance, dreamy, water or alien sounds. Words for the song were incorporated from poetry the senior students had written based on their Noongar animal ‘totem’. Children sang the poems to a beat, them performed body percussion—all of which were recorded.

After a quiet break, a collaborative planning session between the kids and Sam came up with the sequence of the poetry with children adding their own dance interpretations. Sam’s genius came to the fore when, during the recess interval he was able to slice and splice the combinations of sound takes together to create a cohesive track ready for the next stage of the process, a complementary video.

Children also recorded the cappella Nidja Noongar Boodja Koort, ©Honey Webb.

Sharee Saunders, our dance specialist, assisted with movements on the children’s music and poetry but this was driven by the students. Video was taken at various outside locations to support the Noongar theme.

Poems were magpie, echidna, dunnart and racehorse goanna; kulbardi, nyingarn, dhunart and karda. Students wore their indigenous dance costumes highlighting Aboriginal culture, combined Sam’s images and one taken by staff of the students.

The final products will be a compact disc with music only, the completed video and a blooper/funny version (of which there were many)!!

Volunteers at the DunnArt Centre in Dunn Street opened the gallery door for a 10th Annual Community Art Exhibition on Friday September 6th.

A record breaking community effort of 177 entries meant the small gallery space was filled to capacity.

An estimated 60 people attended the evening event—buying local art work, watching the award presentations and celebrating the opening of the new “shudio” building (shed + studio = shudio!).

Jenny Chambers, the Ravensthorpe District Art Group Chairperson, gave an excellent speech summarising the past 10 years of accomplishments thanking all volunteers concerned with the new building, all art related workshops and the 2019 September community art exhibition preparations. Jenny also thanked the large number of sponsors helping to make the exhibition so successful.

After the awards were read out, the crowd then toasted 10 years of exhibiting with champagne and delectable eats from a grazing table which had been beautifully arranged by Hayley Wisewould.

Congratulations go to the following artists who entered work into the 2019 Ravensthorpe Community Art Exhibition.

The annual $750 Ravensthorpe Shire Acquisitive prize went to local photographer, Chris Biddulph, for his large photograph of an echidna. If you visited the 2019 Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show you may have seen his beautiful work displayed for sale.

The 2019 $500 Blooz Award for a painting or drawing depicting the Fitzgerald River National Park Coastline was won by Leonie Rennie for her watercolour painting of “Cave Point from West Beach FRNP”. The judge, Marcia Leonard from Esperance, said “Good use of colour—the artist’s eye for detail captured

and represented the theme well.” Leonie, now retired, hadn’t lifted a paint brush for quite a while so it just goes to show that it’s never too late to enjoy the art process and enter a piece or two! Why not dust off those brushes and start a piece for 2020?

The two photography sections have become very popular - a combined prize pool of $600, kindly sponsored by the Alan Carmichael Family Trust, enticed local photographers to enter a total of 46 entries.

Both photography sections were judged by three members of the ACE Camera Club (Inc) which is situated in the Vancouver Arts Centre, Albany. Mr Bob Symons, president of ACE, plus two other colleagues, were very impressed with the standard of photography and, in particular, the junior entries. They strongly encourage the children to “continue exploring the world through their photography. “

The winner of the 2019 $500 Alan Carmichael Fine Photography Award was Leonie Rennie for her photograph titled “Been here long?” “Since the last high tide!” - a photograph of two globe fish washed up on a local beach. Judge’s Comment: “A very creative image with excellent exposure and detail.”

Tamara Miller’s “Bread and Milk” photograph was awarded a Highly Commended with the judge’s comment being “Great composition with a very good overall balance.” This impressive, large canvas print of the Ravensthorpe Silos at night impressed quite a number of visitors.

Graham Richardson received a Highly Commended for his photograph of a spoonbill bird in flight. It was called “Fly Me High” and received the judge’s comment “ Beautifully captured with excellent exposure, composition, focus and back-lit wings really sets off the image.”

The winner of the 2019 $100 Alan Carmichael Junior Photography Award went to talented Hopetoun artist Jarvis Smallman for his entry called “Mountain Bug” - a photograph of a ladybird on East Mount Barren in the Fitzgerald River National Park. The judge’s comment: “A very interesting concept - very well executed with great depth to image.”

Congratulations Jarvis - it is hoped you will enter again next year.

The Ravensthorpe District Art Group wish to sincerely thank the ACE Camera Club for judging all photographs and for the constructive comments written for each one. (If you entered a photograph and wish to view your comment, please contact Cat.)

Mrs Marcia Leonard, an artist and art teacher from Esperance, took over 4 hours to complete the judging of the rest of the art categories using a point system. The following 5 criteria were used: creativity/innovation; communication of ideas; visual language; selection of media and/or materials and application of skills and/or processes.

Congratulations to the following artists (NB not all of the following categories have highly commended awards and/or comments from the judge):

$250 Painting Award (sponsored by the National’s Peter Rundle - Member for Roe): Megan Lemon - “Cumulus Dreams” – acrylic. Judge: lots of drama in it - intriguing use of visual language - the use of rich jade colour is exciting.

Highly Commended – Painting: Leonie Rennie - “Cave Point from West Beach FRNP” - watercolour.

$200 Ravensthorpe Progress Association Sculpture Award: Theresa Francis - “Eagle’s Nest” - welded metal and rocks. Judge: effective use of visual language + skills + media - sensitive and thoughtful artwork - protective use of eggs imagery.

Throughout the exhibition all visitors to the gallery are asked to vote for their favourite piece of art. The Most Popular Vote for 2019 is a photograph of two blue wrens called “Eclipse” taken by Catherine Tink. Her name and the name of the art work will be placed on the Russell “Jungle” Jaeger

memorial seat.

The last award winner to mention is one which is chosen by the people who hang, label and arrange the art works entered. The $150 Hanger’s Pick Award goes to Cassidy Chambers for her extra large and spectacular painting called “Tetraptera”. The hangers were immediately struck by the shapes and colours used to depict this gorgeous endemic species. Masterfully painted.

During the exhibition a beautiful quilt, sewn by those clever ladies at Crazy Granny’s, was raffled off to help raise money for the DunnArt Centre. The winner was Elsie Schofield from Hopetoun who bought the lucky ticket! The quilt depicted black silhouettes of animals on hand-dyed sunset pieces. A second prize, a beautiful resin necklace made and donated by Tamara Miller, was won by Tegan Smith. The 2019 raffle raised $418 which will be put towards next year’s community art exhibition and future art workshops. All monies donated during the exhibition are also used for this purpose.

All primary aged children who entered art pieces received a gift which, once again, was sponsored by the wonderful people at Ravensthorpe Mechanical Services.

The Ravensthorpe District Art Group, situated at the DunnArt Centre in Dunn Street, would sincerely like to thank all the artists, volunteers and sponsors who have helped to make this art centre so vibrant and successful.

If you would like to take part in art workshops or volunteer your time just pop on to our face book page (Dunnart Studio Gallery) and take a look at what’s happening.

Make the most from your fertilizer investment

As your local Area Manager, Tim Donkin is keen to assist you with all of your fertilizer decisions this season.

So whether it’s soil testing, nutritional advice, fuel gauges, or simply an on-farm appointment to discuss your requirements, give Tim a call today.

Hopetoun CWA had 13 members attend the November meeting, with Judy Plowman attending as a visitor.

Business arising from last meeting sees the bathroom floor area being tiled next Monday. The room will have the cupboards removed after closing on Saturday.

The building licence for the verandah has been applied for by John Brouwer. We are hoping the work will be finished before Christmas.

At this time of the year Hopetoun CWA does their yearly donations to various organisations, namely CWA Head Office , Hopetoun Bowling Club, Ravensthorpe District High School, Jerdacuttup School and Hopetoun School.

The members wish to thank Bill Auburn for installing a Defibrillator Box on the outside wall of our building. The defibrillator has now been placed in this box. If the CWA rooms are not opened, access to the defibrillator is done by ringing 000 to get the code to open the box. If the CWA rooms are open, there is a key to open the box. Instructions are on the outside of the box.

Coralie Thomas has requested the use of the CWA rooms over the Christmas holidays for

Hobbytex,

which will be held from January 6th to January 16th, 1pm to 4pm. Coralie has been doing this for some 25 years and last year she had a mother attend with her children, and she herself had attended as a child.

The members are planning to have a busy bee making more toilet bags to donate to hospitals.

Special thanks to Shirley and Tom Reynolds for donating a shelf to put our DVDs on. Come in and have a look at our display.

It has been decided to have our Christmas Luncheon at our own building on December 9th with every member bringing food to share. Tina Harris from Hopetoun CRC will speak at 10am, our meeting will follow, then our lunch.

Flower winner was Madeline Bell with a flowering Cacti. Elsie Schofield won the raffle.

The members wish Wendy Zani a happy birthday on the November 28th.

Members enjoyed afternoon tea supplied by Coralie Thomas and Ann Dunlop.

Windspray Arts was the last venue at the eastern end of the trail that started in Pemberton and included Albany and surrounding towns. Four Ravensthorpe member, Kerry Dickinson, Judy Harp, Corina Harp and Lynnell Belli, and two Hopetoun members, Louise Lodge and Beryl Semple took part in the Exhibition held at 65 France Street, Hopetoun. The exhibition was launched on September 12th and continued until Sunday October 13th with open days Wednesday to Sunday.

Included in the exhibition were paintings, drawings, textiles, hand-made books, baskets, prints and cards. The exhibition was spread throughout the house and accessed through the garage facing the road. The garage was set up with the portable screens, transported from the previous Windspray space in Maitland Street transforming the room into an ideal mini gallery. Bruce Alford provided the framework for a sculpture which Judy dressed in a colourful skirt to become our mannequin (artist working at her easel) in the front garden. Bruce also made colourful flowers from CD disks which were scattered across the front garden.

Demonstrations and workshops were also a draw card to the venue during the 4 week event. Beryl ran a Coptic Bookbinding workshop and Louise ran A Beach Rope Basket making workshop and Painting for children and youth. Judy demonstrated Needle Felting.

Approximately 150 people visited the venue coming from other regional areas of the state, interstate, Perth and overseas. The launch of the exhibition on Thursday 12th was well attended and included visitors who had come to see the Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show.

It was due to the Wildflower Show that we started the event a week earlier than the official Art Trail commencement date to coincide with the Spring Festival and school holidays when more people are visiting Hopetoun. We were visited by the co-ordinator of Artsouth WA, one person from the UK as well several interstate people.

The event provides an opportunity for local artists to sell work, for Windspray Arts to raise funds and also the profile of the group. Small items such as cards and prints were a popular purchase and two paintings, one quilt and an unframed sketch were also sold.

The raffle was a great fundraiser thanks to Judy, Lynnell, Corina and Beryl. Judy donated a spectacular yellow flower quilt, Lynnell a watercolour of one of our local eucalypts, Corina a cutting board decorated by her resin work and Beryl donated one of her published story books. The quilt was won by Isobet Tuckett from Albany.

The team in Albany who organise the Art Trail run a great project. They offer promotional opportunities through social media and their website. The venue themselves, also promote the event.

■ WA Farmers

WAFarmers welcomes the arbitrated outcome reached between CBH and Arc Infrastructure (formerly Brookfield Rail) that provides a long-term access agreement to the rail network.

For the past 5 years, CBH on behalf of Western Australian growers have been working to achieve fair access for grain growers to the rail network.

WAFarmers President, Rhys Turton welcomed the outcome saying it was a positive result following a long and arduous process, “CBH have received an outcome that will provide certainty and security well into the future for West Australian grain growers,” he said.

“The outcome will allow CBH to confidently invest in the grain receival network and position the cooperative well into the future.

“While the outcome regarding Tier 3 rail lines is disappointing at this time, it was clearly an economic decision not to invest in the degraded Tier 3 lines, this will be the best overall decision for growers in the long-term.

“At a time when grain growers are faced with significant international competitiveness, it is imperative the CBH network remain at a minimum cost pathway from site to port.

“Today’s outcome has brought certainty to both growers and CBH to the long-term use of grain on rail in WA.

“Given the position is clear on Tier 3 rail, it is now imperative that state and federal governments ramp up their expenditure on Western Australia’s wheatbelt and regional road network for the safety our of regional communities,” Mr Turton said.

WAFarmers will continue to work on transport issues for the best outcome on behalf of its members and urges members to attend the rail arbitration outcome community meetings hosted by CBH in Bruce Rock and Kulin.

Details of the community meetings can be found by emailing the Grower Service Centre at [email protected].
