Best Start Year 7 Assessment 2019

Information for parents and carers Best Start Year 7 is an online assessment for students that helps provide information for teachers

on the literacy and numeracy skills of students at the beginning of Year 7.

The Best Start Year 7 will take place at our school on the 10th and 11th February Term 1, 2020.

The assessment covers key literacy and numeracy skills that are important to a student’s success in all subjects in high

school. Students come to high school with a range of experiences, skills and abilities in literacy and numeracy. It is

important that teachers have current information about their students so that they can plan programs and lessons that

best support the learning needs of every student.

The Best Start Year 7 Assessment will be completed at school during class time.

No preparation is needed for this assessment. Its purpose is to provide our teachers with additional information to best

support the teaching of your child. Please contact the school on 63441305 if you have any questions regarding the Best

Start Year 7 assessment.

TIME AND PLACE Students are to go straight to the pool as roll marking will be held at 9.00am. Bus travellers will need to exit the buses at the Primary School and walk to the pool. ENTRY Non season ticket holders and guests will be required to pay $1.00 to enter. WHO IS INVITED? For students, attendance is compulsory, as this is a “normal school day”. Those students who anticipate they will not be here, must provide a note in advance to the Deputy Principal. If students are away, then a note must be provided the following day. Please note that due to the pool being closed to the public only parents, caregivers and supervised siblings are permitted to attend. MEAL ARRANGEMENTS Students can bring their own lunch and are encouraged to bring plenty of water to drink throughout the day. For those wishing to purchase food, there will be a number of items available from the pools kiosk which will be open throughout the carnival. GETTING HOME At the end of the carnival, students who catch a bus will be dismissed at 3.00pm so they can board their bus from the primary school. It is important that all other students stay until 3.24pm as this is a school day and all the normal school rules and conditions apply. WHAT TO BRING Students are encouraged to wear house colours however NO inappropriate dress (including singlet tops) will be accepted. During all stages of the carnival it is strongly recommended that students have a hat, shirt and sunscreen on. Shade tents will be placed up and around the grass area and students may bring their own if concerned about the sun exposure. If there are any medical or similar reasons why a student cannot swim, parents are asked to provide a note to Mr Rue explaining the circumstances. We are all looking forward to a great day!

Year 8 Science VALID Classes This year Canowindra High School has introduced Science VALID lessons to the Year 8 curriculum. The VALID lessons are in addition, and separate, to the regular Science lessons and focus on developing the Stage 4 Working Scientifically outcomes of the Science syllabus. The lessons address the Science syllabus outcomes on:

Questioning and Predicting Problem Solving Analysing & Processing Data and Information Planning and Conducting Investigations Communicating.

VALID lessons also include explicit teaching and learning around literacy and numeracy in Science. It is anticipated that these lessons will assist Year 8 students in preparing for the mandatory VALID test in Term 4. VALID Science 8 is the Validation of Assessment for Learning and Individual Development (VALID) program. This online assessment is conducted in November each year and it is mandatory for all NSW government schools. The test is linked to the Stage 4 Science syllabus and assesses what students know and can do in Science. It also provides useful information about student attitudes towards Science. As well as assessing individual student achievement, results can be used to identify areas of strength and areas for development across entire cohorts. If you have any questions regarding these classes, please do not hesitate to contact one of our friendly Science staff! Thanks Mrs McKenzie, Mrs Balcombe & Mrs Coutanche

Thank you!

A huge Thank You to those mums who volunteered in the school canteen following our advertisement in last weeks newsletter and thank you to those who continue to volunteer. We are always looking for new volunteers, if you are able to help at all please contact Cindy Walker on 0429 654 312 or Alison Stephens on 0408 876 930. We would love to hear from you!
