Principal’s News

Congratulations to our School Captain Santi Tapim, Vice-Captain Marshall McKay and Pedro Tapim on their presentation of an ATSI welcome dance last Friday as part of our NAIDOC celebrations. This coming Saturday is our P&C Open Garden Day and I hope everyone can come along and enjoy the gardens on display. A big thank you must go to the various owners who have made their gardens available during such a difficult time and to our band of P&C helpers for all the work they have put into the days organisation. On Tuesday we will once again welcome our incoming Year 7 students to the school as part of their transition program. Mrs Gregson, our Transition Coordinator, has been working hard to organise an engaging program for the day. Unfortunately Ms Donovan has had to withdraw from the role of Year Advisor for 2020 as she has been successful in gaining a promotion to Head Teacher – English at Wellington High School. At this stage we are still in the process of filling the position but would like to assure the incoming students and their parents that once it is finalised we will let everyone know. Planning for 2020 timetables, classes and resourcing is well underway and I would like to ask any parents whose children will not be returning to Canowindra High School next year to please let the school know as soon as possible to help us with our decision making. Congratulations to Eve Moore on being the winner of last weeks Canteen voucher.

Life Choices Presentation Last Friday, students from Years 7-10 attended a Life Choices presentation by Mr Andrew “Fishtail” Fisher, a professional speaker and racing car driver for the Jesus Racing Team. Throughout his presentation, Mr Fisher encouraged students to think about their life choices and the consequences of their actions. After the presentation, students were also able to check out his racing car!

Canowindra High would like to thank Mr Fisher for coming to the school and sharing his life experiences and knowledge.

Sun Safety Policy Summary A reminder that our Sun Safety Policy has now come into effect and students are expected to wear a hat or cap during any outside activity. Please find attached a summary for your information:

Students must wear a hat during any outside activity in full sun during Term 1 and 4. Hats must be free from inappropriate language, advertising or slogans. Such hats will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the day.

Students who do not comply with wearing a hat during outdoor lessons will be dealt with by the teacher and will be given alternative work in order to meet course outcomes and a consequence under the schools discipline and management policy. Cases of persistent non-compliance will be sent to the Head Teacher of that subject. Spare hats will be available.

Students who do not comply during breaks will be directed to sit in a covered area. If they refuse they will be dealt with by the Head Teacher on duty or the Deputy Principal.

The use of sunscreen is encouraged with the provision of high protection sunscreen by the SRC and the school. Sunscreen is available for student and staff use outside the canteen, the Science staffroom and the staff common room. Sunscreen must be provided by the school for athletics and swimming carnivals.

Students and staff are encouraged to wear good quality sunglasses when outdoors. Sunglasses should be removed when indoors and when directed to do so by a teacher.

Staff should model sun safe behaviour such as hats, sunglasses, applying sunscreen, adherence to the dress code. Where possible, outdoor activities will occur during periods of lower UV danger, such as morning lessons. Outdoor

activities occurring during peak UV danger periods will be limited and the time spent outdoors minimised where possible, for example, PDHPE teachers may choose to do an alternative activity if sport on the oval is scheduled during hot weather.

Study Skills

Handbook

MANAGING ANXIETY DURING EXAMS

If you are someone who freezes or has a mental blank during an exam or is overly anxious you may find that the heightened anxiety is reducing your ability to recall. Remember that being as prepared as possible and not leaving your study until the last minute can make a big difference in reducing anxiety. Start your study early and make a plan so that you have time to study what you need to without stress. It is also important to note that the more practice tests you do, the more familiar you are with the test so it will be less intimidating and you will be used to working under time limits. When you are in the exam if you feel anxious, a good strategy is to close your eyes for a moment and take some long, deep breaths. When you open your eyes do some of the questions you find easy or feel confident about. Meanwhile your subconscious will have a chance to recall the things you are struggling to remember. Another trick is try moving your eyes to different directions, ie looking up and to the left etc. This can also sometimes prompt recall. You could also seek help from a counsellor for techniques on how to manage stress. You can also visit the MANAGING STRESS unit for more strategies. Learn more at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au.
