Dear Readers

A friend of mine just told me

her husband,  a local doctor,

was a Games Maker for two

weeks stationed at the

Olympic Park acting as an

onsite medic, naturally.

During the test run last year

he was posted with the

Archery teams and encour-

aged to have a go.  Quickly

hooked, he speared into

action (...ok, I’ll stop) and

sussed out the local archery

club with his two teenage

girls.  A year on, he and his

daughter now arch (is that

the verb?) every week and

compete for fun, enjoying the

time together.  I’ve heard

many teenagers enthuse

about the Olympics and even

my daughter has promised to

sign up to the college sailing club on return in

September.  With this in mind, I’ve dedicated two pages

to the “Olympic Legacy” (p12) so if you feel like giving

boxing

a go or long for a “Jessica

Ennis” stomach  then why not

sign up to a new sport this

month?

With school starting this week

there’s a helpful article on

Positive Parenting (p14)

encouraging patience which

we all need after six weeks of

managing the children at

home !

As always, I welcome updates

to the community pages.

This magazine is delivered to

15,000 letterboxes in areas of

SO15, SO16 and SO17 so it’s

also an ideal way for local

businesses to generate local

customers by advertising.

Next issue: November 2012

Magazine Co-ordinator Wanted

Discover Southampton is just one magazine within the

Discover Magazines group. With a total of six titles and

another on the way, the administration side of the

business is proving too much to manage in house.

We don’t have offices so you would need to have your

own home working facilities and the job would be on a

part-time, self-employed basis.

The responsibilities are mostly very flexible on time. You

would deal with incoming emails from advertisers, from

the community and from distributors and occasionally

some phone calls, too.  Outgoing calls would be related

to chasing up advert copy or calling to take payment for

advertising bookings.  You’d be helping with managing

the content of the magazines and bookings.  The less

flexible part is when we are approaching a print

deadline when you are likely to need to be available

well into the evening to ensure everything is brought

together. In other words, there will be a couple of long

days each month, although you are not tied to

specific hours.

Our new team member needs to be a quick learner, well

organised, comfortable with technology (inc Microsoft

Office)  and excellent at spelling and punctuation.

Payment will be on a monthly retainer basis of up to

£500 per month. Please email your CV to

[email protected]

In 2002, Gill Adkins, 53 found that the glands inher neck were swollen and showing no signs ofgoing down. After a visit to her GP she was testedand found to have leukaemia cells. After manydifficult years of treatment, recurrences andremissions, Gill, in April this year underwent aBone Marrow Transplant in SouthamptonHospital. Living in Christchurch, she will have tomake regular return visits to the hospital, twice aweek for check-ups.

Southampton Hospital Charity’s Red & White Appeal aims to raise £1.76million to create a dedicated daytreatment unit for patients like Gill.

When Gill and husband Ray found out about the Red & White Appeal they were keen to help, havingexperienced first-hand the need for a new treatment area to enhance patient care.

Husband Ray said, “We found out that ward sister Yvonne Loand the team regularly sell home-made cakes and biscuits toraise money for the appeal and decided to make a bid for aparticularly tasty cake.” Reflecting on her treatment so far, Gillsaid, “I will be eternally grateful for the help, encouragementand high level of professional treatment that I’ve received fromall of the team at Southampton. Our donation is just a smalltoken of our appreciation. I just really like home-made cakes!”

In the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year, The SirHarold Hillier Gardens is celebrating thecompletion of its redesigned Centenary Borderwhich is set to become one of the Gardens mosticonic features.

At an impressive 250 metres long it is believed tobe the longest Double Border in the country andpossibly Europe!

Head of Collections at The Gardens David Jewellsaid: “This is one of our most ambitious projectswhich will help lead the Gardens into the next 25 to50 years. As well as traditional perennial and woody

plantings for the summer there are plenty ofsurprises including many new-on-the-sceneplants. We hope the plant combinations will inspireour visitors and provide thought provoking ideasfor their own gardens”

“This project has been five years in the planningand taken two years of dedicated work bylandscape designers Julia Fogg Associates and TheGardens’ horticultural team plus many of theGardens’ 150 volunteers.”

With over 30,000 plants, the border will provide anextravaganza of colour, textures and shapes.

ARGonAuT is celebrating theend of its second year thisSeptember. Established byStephen Dering and Gill Wins-tanley who are both deaf,Argonaut is a not for profitsocial firm that delivers clean-ing, gardening, plumbing andelectrical services to homesacross South Hampshire.

What makes Argonaut unique isthat all the employees have adisability from deafness tolearning disability to cerebralpalsy. “Our staff value the realwork opportunities that we areable to give them,” says Gill.“Many will be have been out ofwork for a long time and lack theconfidence to do well in jobinterviews.”

Gardener Richard has neverworked since leaving collegedespite holding qualificationsbecause of his learningdisabilities and there was nosupport to find work. Yet he ispart of the Argonaut’s Garden-ing team in demand in acrossPortsmouth, Southampton, Far-eham and Meon Valley.

Cleaner Julie from Hedge Endwas lacking in confidence andwould not travel far from herhome. “I started working atArgonaut in September 2011. With the olympics behind us, but hopefully still fresh in our minds with the Paralympics, this theperfect time to take the plunge and try out a new sport. The success of Team GB at the games hasput many sports in the limelight such as women’s boxing, judo and archery. Demand for coursesand places in our local clubs has dramatically increased which is proof that the legacy of theolympics, despite the cost and disruption will pay off. Here’s a selection of local clubs and facilitiesto help you get started, make that call today and maybe you could be another local future olympian!

DISCOVER BUSINESS

IT may seem old fashioned but sexism in theworkplace is still an issue that needs to be addressed.Acts of sexism are liable to be punished under theEquality Act 2010, legislation put in place to clampdown on any form of sexist discrimination inworkplace.

The most common form of sexism in the workplace iswhereby a member of one sex is treated less favourablythan a member of the other sex simply due to theirgender; this is known as direct discrimination. Indirectdiscrimination occurs where a rule or criterion in aworkplace puts a particular gender at a disadvantage.

Peninsula Business Services state that sexual harassmentis the most frequently occurring type of sexistdiscrimination, with many people not realising thepossible consequences to what they think of as a joke.Said consequences can take the form of a sexdiscrimination claim thus Peninsula Business Servicesstate that it is essential to create a workplace in which itis clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated and thatany abuse of anti-discrimination policy will beconsistently punished.

The procedure for reporting harassment is set out byPeninsula whereby an employee should raise a

grievance which would need to bedealt with under an organisationsgrievance procedure or personalharassment procedure where there isone.

It is important to note that where asex discrimination claim is made to atribunal, there is no upper cap on theamount of compensation that can beawarded for a successful claim. Underthe vicarious liability provisions, where an employer cannot showthat it took measures to ensurediscrimination does not occur intheir workplace, the employer willalso be held responsible for compen-

sation for discrimination in respect of a matter of whichhe had no control or knowledge.

For more information on sexism in the workplaceplease contact Peninsula’s 24/7 Advice Service on0844 892 2772.
