User Bulletin Directions for the Use of the Sheath/Ethanol Filter 12/2018 Overview These directions are for the use of the sheath/ethanol filter, part number 661744, for the following instruments: BD FACSAria™ II, BD FACSAria™ IIu, BD FACSAria™ III, BD FACSAria™ IIIu, Special Order Research Product (SORP) BD FACSAria™, SORP BD FACSAria™ IIu, BD FACSAria™ Fusion, SORP BD FACSAriaFusion, or a BD FACSAria™ system with a fluidics upgrade. This filter can be also found in the Convert Kit Sheath/EtOH Filter, part number 662915. The sheath or ethanol shutdown filter can be used to filter either sheath fluid or ethanol shutdown fluid. You need to change the filter depending on the procedure you are performing and the indications in the software interface. About this task NOTE Before it is installed, the filter can be used as a sheath filter, or an ethanol filter. After the filter is installed for one of these purposes, you cannot use it for a different purpose. Because of this, you should label each filter so that you know which one to use for each purpose. NOTE The same conversion tubing must be moved between the Sheath and Ethanol tank. Additional conversion tubing may be purchased so that each tank has its own designated tubing, part number 662915. When you use the filter as a sheath filter, you should change it every six months, or when increased debris in an FSC vs SSC plot indicates that the sheath filter needs to be replaced. Warnings 1 DO NOT START INSTALLTION BEFORE RELEASING ALL THE PRESSURE FROM TANK. 2 DO NOT STRIKE THE FILTER AGAINST HARD SURFACES AS DAMAGE TO THE FILTER MAY RESULT. VISUALLY INSPECT THE FILTER BODY FOR CRACKS BEFORE USE. 3 THE VENT CAP WILL COME OFF AFTER A ¼ OF A TURN. THE FILTER IS PRESSURIZED, SO AIM THE FILTER AWAY FROM BODY OR INSTRUMENT AND INTO A SEPARATE CONTAINER BEFORE TURNING THE VENT CAP. 4 IF THE CONVERSION TUBING FILTER IS CONNECTED INCORRECTLY, IT MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE INSTRUMENT. 5 WEAR PROPER PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT SUCH AS LAB COATS, SAFETY GLASSES OR SAFETY FACE GUARD, AND GLOVES BEFORE HANDLING OF FILTERS.

User Bulletin Directions for the Use of the Sheath/Ethanol Filter

12/2018

Overview

These directions are for the use of the sheath/ethanol filter, part number 661744, for the following instruments: BD FACSAria™ II, BD FACSAria™ IIu, BD FACSAria™ III, BD FACSAria™ IIIu, Special Order Research Product (SORP) BD FACSAria™, SORP BD FACSAria™ IIu, BD FACSAria™ Fusion, SORP BD FACSAria™ Fusion, or a BD FACSAria™ system with a fluidics upgrade.

About this task

NOTE Before it is installed, the filter can be used as a sheath filter, or an ethanol filter.

Warnings

1 DO NOT START INSTALLTION BEFORE RELEASING ALL THE PRESSURE FROM TANK. 2 DO NOT STRIKE THE FILTER AGAINST HARD SURFACES AS DAMAGE TO THE FILTER MAY RESULT. VISUALLY

INSPECT THE FILTER BODY FOR CRACKS BEFORE USE. 3 THE VENT CAP WILL COME OFF AFTER A ¼ OF A TURN. THE FILTER IS PRESSURIZED, SO AIM THE FILTER AWAY

FROM BODY OR INSTRUMENT AND INTO A SEPARATE CONTAINER BEFORE TURNING THE VENT CAP.

4 IF THE CONVERSION TUBING FILTER IS CONNECTED INCORRECTLY, IT MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE

INSTRUMENT.

5 WEAR PROPER PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT SUCH AS LAB COATS, SAFETY GLASSES OR SAFETY FACE

GUARD, AND GLOVES BEFORE HANDLING OF FILTERS.

Filter Replacement OR Installation of the Conversion Tubing

1 Turn off the stream. 2 Disconnect the air line from the sheath tank. 3 Pull up on the ring of the pressure relief valve to release pressure from the tank. Verify that all of the pressure is

released by pulling it up a second time. 4 Disconnect the filter by pressing on the metal tabs on each end. 5 If converting, connect the conversion tubing to the tank using the “From Tank” end.

6 Write the current date and the fluid type on the filter so that you know when to replace it.

7 Use the arrows on the filter that indicate the direction of the flow through the filter and verify the flow direction

before inserting the line. Ensure that both vent caps are tightened before installing.

8 To connect the filter, press down on the quick disconnect metal tab on the filter until the pin pops up.

11 Reconnect the air line to the tank and check for leaks when the pressure is turned on. Gently tap the filter to loosen air bubbles. DO NOT STRIKE THE FILTER AGAINST HARD SURFACES AS DAMAGE TO THE FILTER MAY RESULT. VISUALLY INSPECT FOR CRACKS BEFORE USE.

12 Place a small container under the vent cap to catch any fluid.

13 Cover the vent cap with a paper towel or a lab wipe and slowly loosen the vent cap to release the air. Aim the

filter away from body or instrument and into a separate container. The paper towel or wipe will prevent the

cap from popping off too quickly. If the cap is loosened too quickly, the cap will come off before any air is

released.

WARNING: CAP WILL COME OFF AFTER A ¼ OF A TURN. THE FILTER IS PRESSURIZED, SO AIM THE FILTER AWAY

FROM BODY OR INSTRUMENT AND INTO A SEPARATE CONTAINER.

14 Close the vent cap. 15 Wipe up any excess fluid that might have dripped outside the container.

Purging the Fluid Filters

1. Place a small container under the vent cap to catch any fluid.

2. Cover the vent cap with a paper towel or a lab wipe and slowly loosen the vent cap to release the air. Aim

the filter away from body or instrument and into a separate container. The paper towel or wipe will

prevent the cap from popping off too quickly. If the cap is loosened too quickly, the cap will come off

before any air is released.

3. Close the vent cap.

NOTE:

When switching the lines between the ethanol and sheath tank, verify that the lines are connected correctly

before attaching the air line. Incorrect connections may cause damage to the instrument.
