LOOKING BEYOND OURSELVES The message found in today’s readings is an oft-told story. Citizen Kane, Daddy Warbucks, and King Midas are only a few of the familiar fictional characters who thought enormous wealth could buy happi-ness and fulfillment. Daddy War-bucks admitted stepping on a few people in his climb to the top. Kane tried to buy the printed word and stardom for his young wife, while King Midas conjured immense wealth and tragedy by his very touch. We learn clearly in today’s read-ings that none of this is really possi-ble. True happiness comes from car-ing for someone other than our-selves. It comes from the pursuit of the virtues Paul described to Timo-thy: faith, love, gentleness, godli-ness, righteousness, and endurance. The Gospel reminds us that we dare not ignore the needs of others, acting as though we don’t notice their suf-fering. God’s call to us is much too clear to disregard for even one more day. RESCUE

It had been raining for days and days on end and a terrible flood had come over the land. The water rose so rapidly that a man was forced to climb onto the roof of his house. As the water level increased, two people in a rowboat came by and told him to get in. “No,” replied the man on the roof. “I have faith in the Lord; the Lord will save me.” So the people rowed away. The man

prayed. The water was already above the second story windows and suddenly a speedboat came roaring by. “Climb in!” shouted the man in the boat. “No,” replied the man on the roof. “I have faith in the Lord; the Lord will save me.” So the man in the speedboat gunned his engine and left. As the waters lapped at the edge of the roof, the

man held onto the chimney and prayed for God to save him. He heard the sound of an approaching

helicopter. Over a loudspeaker, the pilot an-nounced that he would lower a rope to the man on

the roof. “No,” replied the man on the roof. “I have faith in the Lord; the Lord will save me.” So

the helicopter whirled away as once again the man prayed desperately to God to save him. The floodwaters flowed up the roof until they were swirling about him as he clung to the chimney.

The currents were so fierce that they washed him away and, alas, the poor man quickly drowned. When he arrived in heaven, the man marched

straight over to God. “Heavenly Father,” he said, “I had faith in you, I prayed to you to save me,

and yet you did nothing. Why?” God gave him a puzzled look, and replied, “I sent you two boats and a helicopter. What more did you expect?”

MIRAR MÁS ALLÁ DE NOSOTROS MISMOS El mensaje de las lecturas de hoy es una vieja historia. El Ciudadano Kane, Papi Warbucks y el Rey Mi-das son sólo unos pocos de los fa-miliares personajes ficticios que pensaban que con una enorme fortu-na podrían comprar la felicidad y la completa satisfacción. Papi Warbu-cks admite haber pisoteado a algu-nas personas en su ascenso a la cumbre. Kane trató de comprar la palabra impresa y el estrellato para su joven esposa, mientras que el Rey Midas conjura inmensa fortuna y tragedia sólo con su toque. Aprendemos claramente en las lecturas de hoy que nada de esto es posible. Alcanzamos la verdadera felicidad cuando nos interesamos en los demás. Cuando practicamos las virtudes que Dios describe a Timo-teo: fe, amor, mansedumbre, piedad, rectitud y justicia. El Evangelio nos recuerda que no osemos ignorar las necesidades de los demás, actuando como si no notáramos su sufrimien-to. El llamado de Dios a nosotros es demasiado claro para ignorarlo ni un solo día más.

RESCATE Había estado lloviendo por días interminables y la tierra había sufrido terribles inundaciones. El agua creció tan rápidamente que un hombre se vio forzado a subir al techo de su casa. Como los nive-les del agua continuaban subiendo, dos personas vinieron en un bote de remos y le dijeron que subiera al bote. “No”, contestó el hombre que es-taba en el techo. “Tengo fe en Dios. Dios me sal-vará”. Las dos personas se alejaron remando. El hombre oró. El agua llegaba ya a las ventanas del segundo piso. De súbito escuchó que se acercaba una lancha motora. “¡Venga y súbase!”, le gritó el hombre de la lancha. “No”, replica el hombre del techo. “Tengo fe en Dios. Dios me salvará”. Así es que el hombre en la lancha aceleró el motor y se fue. Cuando las aguas rozaban ya el borde del te-cho, el hombre se agarró de la chimenea y le pidió a Dios que lo salvara. En eso oyó que se acercaba un helicóptero. Usando un altoparlante el piloto le dijo al hombre en el techo que le iba a bajar una soga. “No”, contestó el hombre que estaba en el techo. “Tengo fe en Dios. Dios me salvará”. Por tanto el helicóptero dio la vuelta y se alejó mien-tras que el hombre continuaba orando desespera-damente para que Dios lo salvara. Las aguas ya llegaban al techo y se arremetían contra el hombre mientras éste seguía aferrado a la chimenea. Las corrientes eran tan violentas que se lo llevaron arrastrado y el pobre hombre se ahogó rápidamen-te. Cuando llegó al cielo se dirigió directamente a Dios y le dijo: “Padre celestial, yo tenía fe en ti, oré para que me salvaras y no hiciste nada. ¿Por qué?” Dios lo miró perplejamente y le contestó: “Te envié dos lanchas y un helicóptero. ¿Qué más esperabas?”

¡ATENCIÓN! Cómo dejar y recoger a niños de doctrina Parents, please drop off and pick up your children just as you did

last year. The younger children will be dropped off/picked up closest to

the building, and the older children will be dropped off/picked up on the

other side, closer to the grass. The lines are there for everyone’s safety,

so please be patient with the cars ahead, as they may be giving way to

passing students. Also, parents and children may not cross the street for

any reason. Children will not be allowed to walk home, since there is no

way to ensure that they arrive home safely. If you are picking up another

child, please have a note from their parent that grants permission for you

to do so, simply to ensure their safety and that of ours. Thank you.
