The difference between the samples can be changed. Drag the correction-step slider,or enter a value into the text box to set the degree of correction between the samples. The initial setting is 10.

Checking the display-limit check box indicateswith the complementary color when any of theimage values exceed 0 (black limit) or 255

(white limit). Forexample, if the yellowchannel exceedsthose values, the areais displayed in blue.

In photography, red, green, and blue arethe primary colors. The secondary colors, cyan, magenta, and yellow, are madefrom combining the primary colors: cyan= blue + green, magenta = blue + red,and yellow = red + green. The primaryand secondary colors are grouped incomplementary pairs: red and cyan, green and magenta, and blue and yellow.

Knowing the complementary colors isvery important in color balancing. If theimage has a specific color cast, eithersubtracting the color or adding itscomplementary color creates a naturallooking image. For example, if the imageis too red, decrease the amount of red; ifthe image is too yellow, increase theamount of blue.

Adding or subtracting equal parts of red, green, and blue has no affect on the colorbalance. However, it can change the overall image brightness and contrast. Usually, nomore than two color channels are needed to color balance an image.

Color balancing is a skill that develops with practice. While the human eye is extremelysensitive in making comparative judgements, it is a poor tool when making absolutemeasurements of color. Initially, it can be very difficult to distinguish between blue andcyan, and red and magenta. However, adjusting the wrong color channel never improvesan image; subtracting blue from an image that is too cyan creates a green cast.

By selecting individual color channels on thetone curve, adjustments to the overall colorof an image can be made. This can be usedto eliminate unnatural color casts or addwarmth to an image.

If the image is too red, green, or blue, simplydrag the corresponding color-channel curvedown until the color appears natural. If thecolor cast is predominantly one of thesecondary colors, cyan, magenta, or yellow, move the curve of the complementary colorup. For example, if the image is too yellow, move the blue curve up. For more on color, see section 3.7.

    Correcting color

Changing brightnessThis is a simple technique to make an imagebrighter.

With the RGB channel selected, place thesmooth-curve cursor on the center of thecurve. Click and drag the curve up. Look atthe displayed image to judge the result. Theadjustment can be very small and still have asignificant impact on the image. Moving thetone curve down makes the image darker.

The contrast of an image can be changed. The 45 line on the tone-curve graphrepresents the original contrast of the image.Making the angle of the tone curve greaterthan 45 increases the contrast. Making theangle less than 45 reduces contrast.

With the RGB channel selected, click on thetone curve near the top and bottom to addtwo nodes. Slightly move the top node upand the bottom node down. This increasesthe angle of the central portion of the tonecurve and increase the contrast of the imagewithout making an overall change in imagebrightness.

    Increasing contrast

  • 25 SECTION 7: ADVANCED PHOTOFINISHER

This guide shows simple corrections thatcan be made with a histogram. Unlike thetone curve, the histogram providesinformation on a specific image. This canused to evaluate the image and makeadjustments accordingly.

The pixel distribution in the histogramshows the entire tonal range of the image isnot used. There is an absence pixels in thehighlights.

By moving the highlight slider to the left toset the white level to where the pixeldistribution begins, image contrast isimproved.

The gamma slider can be used to change the relative distribution of the tones in theimage. By moving the gamma slider to the left toward the shadows, the image becomeslighter. By moving the gamma slider in the opposite direction, the image becomes darker.

7.4 HISTOGRAM PROCESSING GUIDEOn the tone-curve / histogram palette, corrections can be made by specifying awhite, black, and gray point within theimage. When a dropper tool is placed overthe image, the RGB display and tone curveshow the value of that point. All changesare immediately reflected in the displayedimage.

Click the gray-point button. The gray pointcontrols the color of the image.

With the dropper tool, click a neutral area ofthe image to be defined as the gray point. The area used to calibrate the gray pointmust be neutral. The brightness level of thearea is not important, but if the area has adefinite color, the color is not balancedcorrectly.
