The Falcons own a 9-8 all-time record over the Eagles, dating back to the 2001-02 season. During that stretch CUW hasn’t

won three-consecutive games, but four times won back-to-back games. The Falcons earned a 76-70 victory in the last meeting on February 24 during a NACC Tournament game in Lisle, Ill. CUW’s Eric Kittel scored a team-high 20 points, including four 3-point-ers, while Benedictine’s Tim McGinty led all players with 23 points

career-high 9.0 points per game. He has scored in dou-ble-figures five times and is shooting 55.4 percent from the floor. Mitchell is second on the team, grabbing 4.1

rebounds per game.

The countdown continues for Keith Kahl-feldt, as he is 39 points shy of becoming the 15th 1,000 point scorer in program his-tory. He is averaging 11.6 points per game on 45.1 percent shooting.

The Falcons caught fire and drained 14 3-pointers during their victory over Ran-dolph at the Puerto Rico Classic. It was the sixth most long balls in a game in program history.

CUW ranks 11th nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (41.7). They are 93-of-231 this season from long range.

From St. Louis to Mequon, James Mitchell has traveled a long way on and off the basketball court to get to where he is today. He has persevered through adversity to make him a stronger person in life and a better teammate on the hardwood. Mitchell, a graduate of Lutheran North High School in St. Louis, Mo., was recruited by head coach Shawn Cassidy and he desperately wanted to come to Concordia University Wisconsin, but other circumstances forced him to pursue a dif-ferent opportunity his freshman season. Instead, he headed south to Concordia College Alabama to improve both on and off the court. “I used Alabama for one year to continue to play ball, kind of get away from home and ma-ture.” Mitchell said. After the one year spent at Concordia Alabama, Mitchell transferred to CUW and joined the Men’s Basketball program in 2013-14. During his first season as a Falcon he was still getting to know his teammates and the system, playing limited minutes. As a sophomore, Mitchell appeared in 11 games and averaged just 2.4 minutes per contest. However, he could be heard from the bench cheer-ing on his teammates and hyping up the R. John Buuck Field House when it needed it the most. “I just wanted to play my role, whether it was being on the bench and getting everyone into the game or going in for only 10 seconds to get a stop. I just wanted to do whatever it took.” Mitch-ell stated when asked when asked about his role as a sophomore. Following his first year with the program and only playing a limited role, Mitchell could have easily called it quits; but he stuck with it and saw his minutes slightly grow in his junior season. He appeared in 26 games, averaged nearly five min-utes per contest and continued to provide a spark off the bench. Mitchell credited his teammates as the reason he wanted to keep going and stay with it. He did not want to quit on them and it paid off last year as the team won the NACC Tournament Championship and made an appearance in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Prior to the start this season, his senior year, Mitchell and his teammates said they wanted to play better than last year because they knew they

could. So, he put in a lot of time in the offseason to prepare for his final year on the hardwood. “We put many, many hours of hard work in the offseason,” said Mitchell. “Coming into my senior year we didn’t want to end like we did last year. We want to do more, so whatever extra work I could do in the offseason to make myself better that is what I did.” Extra hours in the weight room and on the court during the offseason and in preseason training have paid off for Mitchell, as he is now a captain and a starter. He is also having his best statistical season averaging 9.3 points per game, which currently ranks fourth on the team and his 4.3 rebounds per game is third best on the squad. “He is a great leader on our team,” Cassidy stat-ed. “He is the guy we can count on to talk and keep things positive; he is a great influence to the young-er guys. Everything he is doing on the court right now is just a bonus to how good of a person he is.” As a leader, Mitchell has shared his experiences with his younger teammates to help them adjust to the collegiate level and show them how to play the CUW way. “Coming from Concordia Alabama to Concor-dia Wisconsin has been a big change and learn-ing the different roles I have had, and what the coaches want me to do has helped me,” the for-ward stated. “I try to tell the younger guys what the coaches are looking for or just talking to them outside of basketball to pick them up and give them an extra boost. I’m just trying to help as much as I can.” On the court, the love of the game and play-ing with a great group of guys continues to drive Mitchell to be successful and improve; off the court he is driven to be successful for his family. “My family did not get the chance to go to col-lege and graduate, so that is a big push for me being the first person in my family graduate.” Mitchell made his mom a promise that he was not going to let her down. Basketball is important to the 6-foot-3 forward, but more importantly he will keep his promise to earn a college degree, as he plans to graduate next December in 2016, with a degree in educational studies.
