location. location. location.

Situated in a park-like setting that is unique in the CSU system, new students are immediately drawn to CSU Stanislaus by its tranquil and picturesque environment — the perfect backdrop for focused, serious study. We have 228 acres of lawns, bridges, waterfalls, and ponds that will make students feel as though they are walking through a private park on their way to class. Our campus is considered one of the most beautiful—and safest—public cam-puses in all of California, where nature coexists in harmony with the pleasing architectural style of our buildings. Looking beyond the natural beauty, students find modern computer and research labs, a technologically enhanced library, and our latest addition, the Nora and Hashem Naraghi Hall of Science.

Fun is all around us

Turlock is nestled between the awe-inspiring Sierra Nevada and the greater Bay Area in the rapidly developing Central Valley. The campus is only two hours away from San Francisco, Berkeley, Marin, and Palo Alto — the home of Silicon Valley. Mountain climbing, sailing, and water sports are nearby to enjoy.

CSU Stanislaus is only a short distance from Yosemite National Park, Monterey Bay, and Lake Tahoe—great for outdoor weekends, holi-days, and spring break. Sacramento, the seat of state government and the home of Old Town with its New Orleans vibe, is just an hour

or so north.

Student life

There’s more to college than attending class, studying, or bubbling in answers on Scantron forms. At CSU Stanislaus , people experience a campus culture that fosters strong relationships between students, faculty, and administrators. Students make lifelong friends with their class-mates, association and club members, fraternity brothers, and sorority sisters. Students become part of a vibrant campus life, where activities are plentiful. Call us home

For many, living on campus is part of the college experience. Strong bonds and lifelong friendships are created through the shared experience of campus life. For campus residents, there are no hassles with transportation or parking, and classrooms and other facilities are just steps away from where our students live. The Village at CSU Stanislaus is decidedly not a typical dorm. With the choice of spacious single, double, or triple occupancy suites or single-occu-pancy apartments, students can pick the one that’s right for them. Privacy, yes, but Village life is anything but dull; with dozens of organized activities — from mixers to dances — students can be as involved as they want to be. The Village boasts two swimming pools, a spa, a total of seven coinless laundry facilities, a computer lab, a study hall, recreation room, sport courts, fitness center, and a new dining hall complete with an outdoor patio.

International education

CSU Stanislaus students can take an internship in France, visit Malta, apply for a scholarship to China, or spend a summer in Prague. As an example, in a single semester, CSU Stanislaus students were recently studying in Spain, Israel, France, Canada, Australia, and Wales. Best of all, financial aid applies, so stu-dents can take courses for the same low fee AND study abroad! CSU Stanislaus was recently selected as one of eight national institutions for the Global Learning for All Program, which means that international/global education is integrated into coursework as an active component.

Faculty facts

CSU Stanislaus employs more than 450 full-time and part-time instructors who have a passion for helping students. The University boasts a low 19 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio. More than 80 percent of faculty hold doctorates, or an equivalent degree in their fields.

Financial Aid

We don’t let money stand in the way of a college education. Recently named one of America’s Best Value Colleges, CSU Stanislaus offers a top-quality education at an affordable price. Our students graduate with a debt load sub-stantially below the national average, thanks, in part, to more than $35 million in financial aid awarded to students annually, with nearly $1 million of that from scholarships.

Internships

Experience gained from internships and fellowships offered at CSU Stanislaus often gives students the advantage in landing that crucial first job on their way to a lifelong career. Leading local, regional, and national companies, busi-nesses, school districts, hospitals, social and government agencies proudly employ CSU Stanislaus graduates. And many of them began their careers as interns.

President’s Message

Welcome to California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Athletics. I am so proud of all of our sports teams and student-athletes.

Their success on the field and in the classroom has contributed to the University’s reputation for excellence and its Princeton Review ranking as one of the “Best 371 Colleges” in the United States. CSU Stanislaus is ranked fourth in the CCAA for the number of student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Additionally, our athletes enjoy a graduation rate that is significantly higher than other NCAA Division II schools; 66.7 percent of CSU Stanislaus athletes graduate in six years compared to 55 percent of student-athletes at the NCAA Division II level nationwide. Our outstanding student-athletes and coaches con-tinue to receive recognition for their many achievements. Pole vaulter Kasey Burlingham was the National Cham-pion in Men’s Track and Field, Men’s Golf Coach John Cook was named West Region Coach of the Year, and over 40 of our athletes earned Academic All-Conference honors last year. Several Warrior graduates have gone on to suc-ceed in athletics beyond their stellar performances here at CSU Stanislaus. Three of our baseball team’s play-ers were drafted by Major League Baseball last spring, including Dakota Watts (16th Round, Minnesota Twins), Kyle Loretelli (38th Round, San Diego Padres), and Eric Federico (39th Round, Colorado Rockies). Joining our coaching staff this year are two Division I coaches with impressive records and the experience to take our men’s soccer and basketball teams to new

heights. Head Men’s Soccer Coach Dana Taylor comes from Oregon State University, where he led his team to post-season appearances in the highly competitive Pac-10 Conference. Larry Reynolds, Head Coach for Men’s Basketball, also has extensive Division I and II experi-ence and has won several conference championships. The Student Recreation Complex is another en-hancement and resource for students this year. The University is quite proud of this new 24-acre complex which features an all- weather track and soccer stadium with 2,100 seats, 18,500 square foot fitness center, and intramural sports fields. California State University, Stanislaus’ reputation for excellence in both academics and athletics continues to grow. I encourage you to build on the strength and mo-mentum of the CSU Stanislaus Warriors by becoming an enthusiastic fan and supporter of our outstanding sports teams.

Go Warriors!

November signals the true end to warm sunny days and sunshine-filled afternoons in the San Joaquin Valley. Fall has arrived with winter just around the corner. With leaves changing color and falling all over campus, it’s time for Cal State Stanislaus athletics to turn over a new leaf of its own. Time to head indoors. The ever-evolving, always-changing na-ture of the sports world, and college sports in particular, makes every project a “work in progress.” With a brand-new coaching staff and just three returners that saw playing time last season for the Warriors, the 2009-10 Cal State Stanislaus men’s basketball team will be just that – a constantly changing work in progress, but with the “new leaf” attitude, the end result should provide a brand of basket-ball not seen in Warrior Arena for some time. “Most of the guys got in late, so we’ve re-ally been in a scramble-mode since Septem-ber,” said new men’s basketball head coach Larry Reynolds. The biggest change the program has seen in seven years occurred over the summer, when Reynolds was hired as its 10th head coach, replacing Keith Larsen. Larsen went 55-107 in his six seasons at the helm. Reyn-olds has since been working feverishly to piece his team together to get ready for the season. “Since Oct. 15 we’ve been practicing and I think the team is starting to come together,” Reynolds said. “It’s a work in progress. We have a team that I think people will want to come out and watch. We feel like we have some guys who can compete in the confer-ence.” And Reynolds should know. He’s got about a quarter-century’s worth of experience in the California Collegiate Athletic Association as a player, assistant coach and head coach. He was a conference Most Valuable Player at former CCAA-member UC Riverside as a player. He won eight CCAA titles and made the NCAA tournament 10 times, including three Elite Eight appearances and a national championship game appearance, in 16 sea-sons as an assistant coach at UC Riverside. At Cal State San Bernardino, now one of the CCAA’s power teams, Reynolds rolled up a dazzling 110-35 record over five sea-sons and made four consecutive NCAA West Regional appearances. His clubs won three CCAA championships (1999-2002), two West Region titles, and advanced to the NCAA Di-vision II Elite Eight twice. Reynolds was named CCAA Conference Coach of the Year four times and National Association of Basketball Coaches District

Eight Coach of the Year in 1998-99. “I’ve played in the conference, I’ve been an assistant coach in the conference and I’ve been a head coach in the conference, so I think I have a pretty good idea of the type of player that can succeed,” Reynolds said. He last coached at Long Beach State, where in five seasons he directed his teams to consecutive post-season playoff appear-ances from 2004-05 to 2006-07, including a Big West Conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in his final year. The 49ers rolled to a 24-8 record in 06-07, and he was named Big West Conference Coach of the Year. But enough about Reynolds, what about the 2009-10 team? “For this team, every game is going to be important,” Reynolds said. “Not only the wins and losses, but the growth from game to game. Those types of things are measured in time.” Reynolds and the team will need to grow a lot if they want to do better than last season’s 3-17 CCAA and 7-18 overall records. “The goal is to continue growing as a group and hopefully by mid-February or March, sneak into the playoffs and do some damage. The goal every year is to win the conference, get into the conference tourney, win that and go on to the NCAA Tournament. “Realistically, we don’t know what this team can do. None of them have been through the rigors of a 22-game conference schedule. It’s a marathon.” It sounds like lofty goals for a team pre-dicted to finish 11th out of 12 teams in the CCAA, but championships and CCAA are all Reynolds knows, as proven by his impres-sive resume in the conference. “We need to stop talking about good games, but (instead) years and champion-ships,” Reynolds said. No specific starting lineup is set at this point in the year, but Reynolds is beginning to key in on some players that will serve as important parts to the Warriors’ machine. “We have about 10 guys who are pretty

even-steven, so we should have a lot of role-players,” Reynolds said. “(The starting lineup) will probably vary game to game de-pending on the team we’re playing and what their lineup looks like.” So far this preseason, the following play-ers have stood out and figures to be big fac-tors this season: Senior Matt Ibewiro is the Warriors’ re-turning big man. Last season in the CCAA, Ibewiro ranked fifth in blocks and third in of-fensive rebounds. He averaged 10.4 points and 7.4 rebounds a game in 2008-09, and should only do better in 2009-10. “He’s a player we’ll have to count on,” Reynolds said. “He played last year and put up some pretty good numbers.” Chad Johnson should take up a lot of the point guard time for the Warriors, which may seem surprising for a 6-foot, 3-inch, 190-pound senior, but Reynolds says he’s the best passer on the team. “He’s probably our best passer. He puts in a lot of time and is our hardest worker. He will more than likely have to have a big year for us to compete,” Reynolds said. Johnson may also see time at small forward for the War-riors this season. Jordan Stokes comes to the Warriors this season from the College of Idaho, one of the most competitive basketball teams in the NAIA. He has the experience that Reynolds is looking for, and now needs to get the play-ing time. Reynolds said that Stokes will most likely play small forward this season. Dwight Jones is a junior transfer from Moorpark Community College in Southern California, and will be the Warriors’ Energizer Bunny of energy this season. “He’ll provide a spark,” Reynolds said. “He’s very quick, very explosive, and could be a very good defender.” Then, there’s big Frank Monge, who stands at six feet, 11 inches. It’s the second straight season that the Warriors have had a player at 6’11”, but this season Reynolds has plans to make the junior Monge a key part of the Warriors’ strategy. “I think he’ll be very effective at this level,” Reynolds said. “He just needs to get playing time.” Monge is originally from Puerto Rico and came to the mainland to play basketball at NCAA Division I Rhode Island. After redshirt-ing there, Monge came to California and played a little bit at Ohlone College before joining the Warriors this fall. “He’s very skilled. It’s really hard for big guys to play in this conference because they have smaller guys knocking them at the hips or at the knees,” Reynolds said.

Season Preview

“For this team, every game is going to be important,” Reyn-olds said. “Not only the wins and losses, but the growth from game to game. Those types of things are measured in time.”

Head Coach

Larry Reynolds, who has coached Division I and II championship teams at Long Beach State and Cal State San Bernardino, became the head coach of the men’s basketball program at California State University, Stanislaus, in June of 2009.

Reynolds compiled an impressive record as a head coach for 10 seasons after a number of years as an assistant coach at UC Riverside and the University of San Francisco.

In five seasons at Long Beach State, he directed his teams to consecutive post-season playoff appearances from 2004-05 to 2006-07, including a Big West Conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in his final year. Long Beach State rolled to a 24-8 record in 2006-07, and he was named Big West Conference Coach of the Year.

At Division II Cal State San Bernardino, Reynolds’ teams rolled up a dazzling 110-35 record over five seasons and made four consecutive NCAA West Regional appearances. His clubs won three CCAA championships (1999-2002), two West Region titles, and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight twice.

At Cal State San Bernardino, after a 12-15 first season, Reynolds turned the program around to post a 23-8 season in 1998-99 and won the West Region in 1999. The team advanced as far as the NCAA Championship quarterfinals.

CSUSB advanced to the 2001 West Regional title game and posted a 24-4 record that season. The following year, in 2002, Reynolds again led the Coyotes to an impressive 28-2 overall record before falling in the NCAA Championship quarterfinal game.

Reynolds was named CCAA Conference Coach of the Year four times and National Association of Basketball Coaches District Eight Coach of the Year in 1998-99.

From 1979 to 1995, Reynolds was an associate head coach at UC Riverside with John Masi. UCR won eight CCAA titles and made the NCAA tournament 10 times, including three Elite Eight appearances. In 1994, UCR advanced to the national championship game. During the 1995-96 and 96-97 seasons, Reynolds served as an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco.

Reynolds played at UC Riverside where he was a conference most valuable player in basketball. He graduated from UCR with a degree in urban studies in 1976 and earned his master’s degree in education from Azusa Pacific in 1993.

Warrior Fanatics

The Warrior Fanatics is a student volunteer program of the Associated Students, Inc. It is a one-year program which starts each fall semester. Twenty of the CSU Stanislaus students will be chosen as a member of the ASI Warrior Fanatics each year through an application process.

The ASI Warrior Fanatics works with the ASI Senate, Staff, and Warrior Squad to promote school spirit and encourage CSUS student participation on and off campus. The Warrior Fanatics will work as a collective team to increase campus spirit and involvement by promoting upcoming events, providing extracurricular activities, offer reward programs for students, coordinate game-time activities, and ensure that Warrior (school) Pride is always in abundance on campus. The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s fin-est NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Hum-boldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Cal State Bakersfield ended its long stint as a member of the conference this past year after reclassifying to to Division I. CCAA institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s conference-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and wom-en’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring com-petition. CCAA members have won 146 NCAA Championships (98 men, 49 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division

II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10). CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, 10 softball, six track & field, five volleyball and five basketball na-tional championships as well as 18 more in four other sports. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 60 years, a number of in-stitutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Ful-lerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine , UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 12th year as the Commis-sioner.

Warrior Athletics Tradition

California State University, Stanislaus fields 14 men’s and women’s athletics teams in the California Collegiate Ath-letic Association (CCAA), having become a member in fall 1998. The University is affiliated nationally with the National Col-legiate Athletics Association (NCAA), Division II. The Warriors have a winning tradition with over 250 student-athletes earning All-American honors since the program’s inception.

The Warriors have been very com-petitive at the national level since moving up to NCAA Division II in 1989.

Kasey Burlingham became the first individual national champion since 2005 when he captured the 2009 men’s track and field title in pole vault. The softball team advanced to the super-regionals in the first season under the new postseason format while the men’s golf team finished sixth in the nation after a second-place showing at the super regionals.

In 2007-08, the baseball program set a team record in wins and advanced to the NCAA West Regional tournament for the first time as a Division II program. The softball team continued its success by winning the CCAA Tournament Cham-pionship on its way to another NCAA West Region tournament appearance.

The Warrior women’s soccer team posted its best regular-season in 2005 with a 15-4-2 record. Behind the team’s

success, the University was rewarded as the CCAA Soccer Championship host.

In 2006-07, 11 of the 14 Warrior ath-letic teams posted winning records and Warrior student-athletes Graduated at a higher rate than the University student-body while maintaining a B-plus grade point average.

Two firsts occurred in 2006-07 for the Warriors as a Division II program with the men’s soccer team qualifying for the CCAA Championships for the first time af-CCAA Championships for the first time af-CCAA Championships for the first time after finishing second in the North Division. The softball program achieved the Elite status as it hosted and won the West Re-gion and made its first ever appearance at the NCAA Championship tournament before finishing with a school record 50-win season.

Both of the outdoor track and field

programs turned in their best conference team finishes in 2006-07.

The men’s golf team also enjoyed success, as it captured a CCAA champi-onship in 2007 before continuing its post-season success both at the regional and national level.

In the 2005 women’s track and field standout Chaunte Mitchell became the second CSUS athlete to repeat as a na-tional champion, claiming the pole vault title in 2004 and 2005. It was the first time since Carrie Luis in 1993 and 1994 that a Warrior athlete won back-to-back national championships. Luis claimed a double national championship in the 800- and 1,500-meter races both years.

During 14 years of competition at the NCAA Division III, level, California State University, Stanislaus won 12 national golf championships, two national baseball championships, and had both its men’s and women’s basketball teams reach the “Final Four” in the national tournaments.

Other notable achievements for the Warriors include:

• The women’s basketball program has made it to the NCAA tournament three times in the last 15 years including the team’s last appearance in 2003.

• The women’s soccer program achieved its first national ranking in 2004 and finished with the team’s fourth 10-win season.

• For the second time since 2005, the men’s basketball team defeated a Division I program when the Warriors beat Santa Clara in a 2007 preseason game. The Warriors also defeated UC Irvine in November, 2005.

• Two-time CCAA Athlete of the Year Joel Stallworth competed at the 2008 World Indoor Track & Field Cham-pionships in Spain.

California State University, Stanislaus students overwhelm-ingly approved a referendum to fund the construction of a stu-dent recreation complex in the spring of 2007 and the complex opened this fall in time for the soccer season.

Sixty-eight percent of stu-dent voters approved of the measure. A higher than normal number of student voters took to the polls to vote for the refer-endum and student body officer elections.

“I am very pleased to see that students are so supportive of this project, because it will re-ally be an asset to the Universi-ty and the community,” Califor-nia State University, Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani said. “This is a project that captures the spirit of this University and contributes to physical educa-tion and fitness as one of the four essential pillars of education along with the spiritual, intellectual and personal components. It’s also one of the major elements of establishing Turlock as a college town.”

The complex, located on the east side of campus at the corner of Geer Road and Christoffersen Parkway, features a 19,000-square-foot fitness center, a 2,100-seat lighted soccer/football stadium (Warrior Stadium) with a state-of-the-art all-weather turf and track (Al Brenda Track), a lighted intramural competition field and a soccer practice field. A field events site for the relocated track and field program is also included in the project.

CSU Stanislaus students will pay an additional $80 in the fall, spring and summer terms, and $27 in the winter term start-ing in 2008. Students who take more than half of their classes at the Stockton Center will not be required to pay the fees, and monthly rates will be available for those students who are not taking classes during the summer.

A unique feature of the project is the campus commitment that half of all donations and profits related to the facility will be directed toward reducing the student fee after the complex is opened. The other half of donations will go to athletic scholar-ships while the remaining half of profits generated by the facili-ties will be designated for future expansion and improvements of the complex.

The Associated Students, Inc., University Student Union Board of Directors and Student Athletic Advisory Committee leadership were in-volved in the planning for the project. A student oversight committee provided a voice in operation of the facilities.

The addition of a lighted intramural field provides CSU Stanislaus with its first dedicated facility for that program. Participation in intramurals has increased dramatically with the University’s steady enrollment growth and improved student-generated recreation programs.

CSU Stanislaus Director of Athlet-ics Milton Richards said that the Warriors sports program will take a major step for-ward with the addition of the new facili-ties.

“We are very grateful to President Shirvani and our students for their over-whelming support of this project,” Rich-ards said. “This facility will allow Warrior Athletics to move to the next level of competitive success while meeting the recreational needs of all students.”

The gymnasium took on the name, Warrior Arena, in 1999 — 21 years after it was built on the east side of the campus.

The Arena is home to the War-riors’ men’s and women’s basketball teams, the women’s volleyball team, department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as well as Health and Physical Educa-tion.

Warrior Arena has become one of the toughest places to play in the conference and is noted for its atmo-sphere and vocal fan support.

In the same vicinity on the east side of the campus, the athletic facilities also include the Student Recreation Complex, which features a soccer and track stadium, a baseball field, two softball fields and six tennis courts.

Both baseball and softball fields also feature batting cages. A full-size swimming pool is adjacent to the Field House, which is home to physical education professors’ offices and the Warrior Fitness Center. With the addition of the new Student Recreation Center, student-athletes have gain better access to the Fitness Center.

Director of Athletics

Dr. MIlTon rICHArDSDirector of Athletics

Dr. Milton E. Richards is in his tenth year as director of athletics at Califor-nia State University Stanislaus. He is guided by the belief that intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of the over-all mission of the university and that a successful intercollegiate athletics and recreation program for men and women contributes substantially to campus life and community interaction. Dr. Richards and his staff have taken Warrior Athletics to new heights among the nation’s elite intercollegiate athletics programs. The goals for the Warrior Intercollegiate athletics program are:

• To graduate Warrior student-athletes at a rate higher than

the general student body.• To positively promote California State University Stanislaus

through an intercollegiate athletics program that operates within the rules and regulations of the University, National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

• To be competitive and provide student-athletes with a posi-tive intercollegiate athletics experience.

Since his arrival in the spring of 1996, Cal State Stanislaus

student-athletes have continued to graduate at a rate higher than the general student body while maintaining a stellar 3.0 class room grade point average (G.P.A.) as a group. Other accom-plishments by Dr. Richards, his coaches, student-athletes, and friends of the program during Richard’s tenure include:

• More than 300 student-athletes have been named to all-con-

ference, all-region, and All-American honors, as well as receiving accolades as All-Academic student-athletes at various levels.

• Warrior student-athletes are committed to community in-volvement delivering Holiday meals to needy families, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, and working with local school children on academic and athletics skill development. The Stu-dent Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has constantly finished first in the conference in collecting donations for the Make-A-Wish program.

• The Warrior Athletics program has consistently been ranked within the top thirty percent of all NCAA DII Athletics programs as measured by the National Association of Directors of Athletics (NACDA) in its annual Director’s Cup standings.

• Twenty-two Warrior Athletics teams have participated in NCAA post season play.

• Nearly $5 million dollars has been secured in private funds for the Intercollegiate Athletics program.

• Three separate student fee referendums have been passed by Cal State Stanislaus students in support of the Athletics pro-gram including the referendum for the recently completed $12 million state of the art Student Recreation Complex and Stadium and two additional referendums to support Warrior Athletics.

Prior to joining Cal State Stanislaus, Dr. Richards served as Director of Athletics at the State University of New York at Albany.

In the spring of 1992 Dr. Richards launched and completed a capi-tal fund campaign to build a new indoor football practice facility and luxury suite press box. He and his staff then established the first luxury football stadium suite program in the Big 12 Confer-ence for the highly successful Wildcat football program.

From 1982-91, Dr. Richards enjoyed a nine-year association with Temple University, a Division IA institution in Philadelphia. He spent six of those years as Associate Athletics Director, a po-sition that included the job of Chief Financial Officer. In that role, he managed all of the administrative and operational aspects for the Temple University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. At Temple University Dr Richards also served an adjunct faculty member for the Temple University College of Education teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in education administra-tion.

The Visiting Committee is in an advisory Board established to provide input to WVU President Michael Garrison and College Dean Dana Brooks, on all matters related to the School of Physical Education. He will be inducted into the West Virginia University Hall of Fame this October for his contributions to his alma mater and professions service to Intercollegiate Athletics.

Dr. Richards earned three degrees from West Virginia Uni-versity, including an Ed.D. in education in 1983, a MS in Sport’s Management in 1982, and a BS in sports management in 1980. He has authored several articles on issues related to intercol-legiate athletics and was inducted into the West Virginia Hall of Fame on Oct. 3, 2009 for his services to WVU and the profession of Athletics Administration.

Dr. Richards is the father of two children, Milton Chase, a nursing student at West Virginia University, and Megan Brittany, a junior also enrolled at West Virginia University. The number one goal for the Intercollegiate Athletics program at California State University Stanislaus is that our student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. To achieve this goal coaches at Cal State Stanislaus only recruit student-athletes deemed admissible by the Director of Ad-missions who show promise for academic and athletic achievement. In the fall of 2006, under the direc-tion of Vice President for Student Affairs Stacey Morgan-Foster and Director of Athletics Dr. Milton Rich-ards, an Academic Advisor for student-athletes was recruited and a program to assist student-athletes in obtaining their college degree was established. Under the leadership of the Senior Director of Retention and Advising Lee Renner, Academic Advisor Amye Leon provides a comprehensive academic advising program for all student-athletes. Her program includes personal one on one advising, a supervised athletic study hall program, determina-tion and monitoring of student-athlete NCAA and CCAA academic eligibility and most importantly, direct interaction with campus faculty on behalf of coaches, student-athletes and campus staff to assist all student-athletes in their pursuit of a college degree. Success in the classroom for student-athletes is a top priority for Warrior Athletics. Our department

consistently earns a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Warrior student-athletes also achieve NCAA and CCAA Academic All American Awards, with 35 earning Academic All-CCAA honors in 2006-07, 52 in 2007-08, and 47 in 2008-09. Student athletes are strongly encouraged to visit both the Athletic Advisor and their chosen major department advisor/faculty each semester before registering for classes. The Advising Re-source Center is located in Mary Stuart Rogers (MSR) 180, and appointments can be made by calling (209) 667-3304. Leon Graduated from California State University, Fresno with a B.A. in Psychology in 2001, obtained her M.A. in Educational Counsel-ing and Student Services in 2002, and is currently enrolled as part of the first cohort of the Ed.D. program at CSU, Stanislaus.

Research shows that students who are part of a learning community and a FYE program do better in their classes, are more active on campus, make friends more easily, and get to know faculty more personally than students who do not join such a program. The FYE program provides these benefits for you.

In the First Year Experience Program, you have the opportunity to join a learning community with other new students. The classes in the learning community are integrated around an interesting theme and linked to a seminar that will prepare you to be successful in your classes and will encourage you to get involved on campus. California State University, Stanislaus and Warrior Ath-letics became a member of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program in 2007-08. The mission of the NCAA is to maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the campus educational program and the student-athlete as an integral part of the student body. With this in mind, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Pro-gram was created to support the student-athlete development initiatives of NCAA member institutions and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the context of higher education. In the process of achieving this mission, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program will: • Promote student-athletes’ ownership of their academic, athletic, career, personal and community responsibilities. • Meet the changing needs of student-athletes. • Promote respect for diversity and inclusion among student-athletes. • Assist student-athletes in identifying and applying transferable skills. • Enhance partnerships between the NCAA, member institutions and their communities for the purpose of education. • Foster an environment that encourages student-athletes to effectively ac-cess campus resources. • Encourage the development of character, integrity and leadership skills.

Participating institutions in the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program are provided with instructional materials and supplemental resources which support a student-athlete’s development in five areas: academics, athletics, personal development, career development and community service.

The Warrior Athletics Club is the fundraising arm of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at CSU Stanislaus. Annual donors to the War-rior Athletics Club become club members and are entitled to member benefits based on the amount of their donation. The Warrior Athletics Club is supported by businesses and individuals, and provides funds on an annual basis for ath-letic scholarships and operational activities such as travel and equipment to more than 250 male and female student-athletes at CSU Stanislaus.

The Warrior Athletics Club is administered by the CSU Stanislaus Foundation, which is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c) charitable organization. Therefore, Warrior Athletics Club members receive IRS chari-table donation credit based on the amount of their donation less fair market value for benefits received.

LOOKING AHEADThere are many challenges facing Warrior Athletics, but with your support they can be overcome. In the last two years we have seen unprecedented growth in facilities and program improvements. The Student Recreation Complex and the Al Brenda Track were completed! This is just the tip of the ice berg. The Warrior Athletics Club is what makes all this possible!
