DOI: Introduction
• What is a DOI?
– A digital object identifier (DOI) is a unique alphanumeric string assigned by a registration agency (the International DOI Foundation) to identify content and provide a persistent link to its location on the Internet.

DOI: Introduction
• A DOI is a persistent link to a piece of content online that is made up of a prefix and a unique suffix.
• It stores all the data for your online publications! Each DOI has bibliographic and other metadata behind it.
We lead
When to use DOI?
1. When your article is published and made available electronically
2. For citation purposes
We lead
DOI syntax
All DOI numbers begin with a 10 and contain a prefixand a suffix separated by a slash. The prefix is a uniquenumber of four or more digits assigned to organizations;the suffix is assigned by the publisher and was designedto be flexible with publisher identification standards.

DOI: Prefix
• Prefix: Assigned to publisher
• The DOI prefix shall be the registrant code

DOI: Suffix
• Suffix: Assigned by publisher
• Approved character set for DOI suffixes:
– “a-z”, “A-Z”, “0-9” and “._;()/“.
• The specific pattern is up to the registrant
• Keep it simple

Benefits of using DOI
• Metadata repository – stores your data
• Make your contents discoverable – the more metadata you deposit with your article, the more discoverable it will be
• If the URLs or services change over time, e.g., the resource moves, this same DOI will continue to resolve to the correct resources or services at their new locations
• Persistence – no broken links
We lead
Benefits of using DOI
• Readers are more likely to find and cite articles with DOIs, which helps them and the journal
• Authors also like to submit manuscripts to journals that are more discoverable because more people will read their research!

DOI Registration Agencies

DOI system: Crossref
• What is Crossref?
– Established in 2000 as an independent association.
– A not-for-profit, member-based organization for scholarly publishing working to make content easy to find, cite, link and assess.
We lead
DOI system: Crossref
• Why do publishers join Crossref?
– Coverage: Scholarly and professional research content
– To help your content get discovered
– Show people where your content is located, and update that if/when the content moves
– To drive more traffic to their content
– Turn references into hyperlinks
– Find out who is using your content
– To let the world know the content exists
We lead
DOI system: Crossref
• Registering a DOI with Crossref:
– Fill in the membership application form online
– Submit your application; Crossref will send you a membership agreement to sign
– Pays the initial annual fee
– Crossref will issue a prefix, and username and password to register DOIs and deposit metadata about your digital objects

DOI system: Crossref
DOI with Crossref, how it works…
• Once you obtain prefix from Crossref Create your own suffix for each article Create metadata files for each article and other key metadata such as authors’ ORCID iDs, references, abstracts, full-text-links. These files then need to be deposited into Crossref system Once that information is with Crossref, the content is registered and the DOI link is immediately available on the Internet
We lead
Crossref member obligations
• Members are required to:
– Assign DOIs and deposit metadata for all online journal articles. https://www.crossref.org/webDeposit/
– Assign DOIs and deposit metadata as soon as possible after online publication.
– Maintain metadata and URLs associated with all registered DOIs.
– Link references in the journal articles they deposit with Crossref. https://apps.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery

DOI deposit
We lead
Crossref member obligations
• Crossref DOIs in citation reference lists– Link references in scholarly journals using DOIs
– Copy and paste reference list of one article into the Simple Text Query Form (you must have a registered email)

Crossref member obligations
• Check DOIs generated by Crossref, and copy-paste into your document

Crossref content types
• Dissertations: includes single dissertations and theses; DOIs are not assigned to collections of dissertations
• Posted content: consists of preprints, working papers, reports, dissertations, and many other types of content that has been posted but not formally published
