The NIP31/Digital Fabrication conference takes place at the Portland Marriott DowntownWaterfront, on the banks of the Willamette River. It’s proximity to the city’s riverfront park offerslovely vistas and miles of running, biking, and walking trails. It’s an easy city to navigate by foot,bike, or public transportation.

Portland is a lively, yet relaxed city known for microbrews, food carts, world-famous rose andjapanese gardens, and tax-free shopping, as well as its proximity to a stunning Pacific Oceancoastline, vibrant wine making region (famous for pinot noirs and pinot gris), and the beau-tiful Columbia Gorge Valley and Cascade Mountains.

The city’s cultural offerings include the Portland Art Museum, the Oregon Historical SocietyMuseum, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, and the Museum of Contemporary Crafts.There is also the lovely Lan Su Chinese Garden, an accurately built Ming Dynasty-style gardenin Portland’s historic Old Town Chinatown. The artsy Pearl Arts District—which houses Powell’sBooks, the largest bookstore in the world—offers boutiques and galleries to explore.

The printing industry is evolving and trans-forming. On one hand, familiar digitalprinting technologies such as inkjet andelectrophotography continue to advancewith improvements in print quality, colorscience, image processing, and workflow.However, over the last decade, we havewitnessed the remarkable transformation oftraditional printing technologies. The trans-formation has extended printing beyondmarks on paper and is playing an increas-ingly important role in redefining fabrica-tion and manufacturing. Adaptations of tra-ditional printing technologies are nowbeing used to produce and manufacturefunctional two- and three-dimensionaldevices and objects on a wide range ofsurfaces and substrates. These new meth-ods are enabling new markets and chang-ing the fabrication and manufacturinglandscape.

The advances in conventional printing andthe emergence of digital fabrication areboth being fueled by the discovery of newmaterials, novel processes and methods,and easier access to high performancecomputing and data processing capabili-ties. For example, by leveraging recentadvances in nanotechnology and materialscience, it is now possible to print high-performance electronic and photovoltaicdevices, highly-sensitive chemical and bio-logical sensors, and even biological mate-rials and structures. Nanotechnology hasalso played a significant role in advancingconventional printing with the introductionof new toners, inks, substrates, and imag-ing techniques. More recently, the develop-ment and application of these new materi-als and printing methods are enabling new3D printing and additive manufacturingtechnologies that promise to help launchthe next industrial revolution.

Like the printing industry, the NIP andDigital Fabrication conferences continue toevolve. During the last decade, the line thatdivided the traditional NIP and digital fab-

rication communities has become increas-ingly blurred and new ideas and conceptsare routinely shared and repurposed. In2015 this amazing convergence of print-ing technologies will continue in Portland,Oregon. The goal of this conference is tobring together everyone working in theprinting ecosystem—teachers, researchers,developers, practitioners, manufacturers,distributors—to share ideas, learn fromeach other, and be part of the next wave ofthe future of printing.

In an effort to reflect the evolution andtransformation of our industry, next year’sconference will be organized and structuredto make it easier for attendees to accommo-date diverse and cross-functional interestsand specialties. Although the organizationof next year’s conference will look differ-ent, we will be continuing the tradition ofoffering outstanding keynote presentationsthat explore state-of-the-art technology top-ics and new industry perspectives. We willalso continue to offer an excellent shortcourse program with both introductory andadvanced offerings.

The conference committee is working hardto engage the local wider Portland commu-nity to leverage the conference locationand offer attendees opportunities to visit lo-cal industries and universities. The Late Breaking News compiles recent successstories on the implementation of digital printingapplications into manufacturing lines. Every newsuccessful implementation strengthens the stand-ing of our community and the general percep-tion of digital fabrication. We encourage you topresent your success story. Short Courses and Workshops

The conference offers an extensive array of 2- to4-hour short courses and workshops taught ororganized by world-renowned experts on awide range of subjects related to digital printingtechnologies.

Past classes have included: Introduction to Digi-tal Fabrication, Printed Electronics, Printing ofBiomaterials, Industrial Ink Jet Technology forPrinting and Fabrication, and Role of Ink Jet inCommercial and Industrial Printing. In additionto the traditional types of course offered in pastyears, we are looking for instructors/experts tooffer location-based and application/industry-focused classes or workshops. We are also look-ing for classes with a hands-on, practical nature,and/or untraditional format.

How to SubmitSubmission Deadline: March 20, 2015Please read the submission criteria carefully as it has changed from last year.

Option 1: Journal of Imaging Science and Technology Focused Section Submission—submit via jist.msubmit.com (NOTE: All papers submitted via Option #1 will automaticallyalso be submitted to the conference program committee for reivew per Option #2.)Submit a complete JIST manuscript of original work in the related science and/or technologyto the web address noted above; under manuscript type, select: Focused SectionNIP31/Digital Fabrication 2015. Prior to submission, pay close attention to the AuthorGuidelines for Conference Focused Sections, found at www.imaging.org/ist/pdfs/JIST_Conference_Focused_Section_Guidlines.pdf. Authors will be notified by the end of May 2015.Accepted papers will be included in the conference oral presentation program. Rejected pa-pers will still be elegible for Option #2 and do not need to be resubmitted.

Option 2: Conference Paper Submission—submit via www.imaging.org/portlandSubmit a technical paper representing original work in the science and/or technologyrelated to digital printing or fabrication, to the Conference Paper web address noted above.Submissions should be based on the template provided and must include an extended abstractof approximately 500 words, clearly stating the technical content of the paper, the methods,and conclusions; if appropriate, emphasize what is new compared to previously present-ed/published results. You will be asked to indicate your preference for giving an oral or aninteractive paper. Abstracts are peer-reviewed; authors will be notified in April 2015 as toacceptance. Accepted papers (4-6 pages in length) are published in the conference proceed-ings. Papers are due in electronic form by July 7, 2015. Special Topic SessionsFollowing on the highly successful Special Ses-sions on Digital Biology (2013) and 3D Print-ing (2014), the 2015 conference will featurespecial sessions on the convergence of nano-technology and printing. There will also be asession focused on recent advances in bio-print-ing and biofabrication. These expanded ses-sions feature focal presentations by industryexperts. Feel free to contribute your researchresults by submitting papers on these topics.

Keynote PresentationsKeynote Presentations given by leaders in theindustry and related scientific fields are a high-light of the conference. These talks provide at-tendees with broader context on industry-wideissues, important technical achievements, and/or international market trends. The 2015 keynoteswill focus on how the relevance of printing andimaging continues to expand beyond tradition-al printing to hybrid and new systems—notonly in the areas of functional applications(printed electronics, bio-printing, and 3D printing),

but also in the development of new techniquesfor traditional processes, like electrophotography.

Technology RoundtablesSpecial Technology and Application Roundta-bles are being planned for next year. Whattopic would you like to discuss with leading ex-perts from industry and academia?
