Smarter approaches

Digital

We live in a digital world that continues to evolve at an astonishing pace. The ever-changing digital built environment presents new opportunities to enhance the way we live and work.

Digital tools have permeated the business environment, provoking significant changes in the way we work, communicate, and sell. A ‘Digital Economy’ has formed which presents new opportunities and challenges for business leaders seeking to embrace it.

In a world that is data enabled and data is openly available, information can be harder to find. We work with our clients to provide information from the mist of data that can help provide real-time insights to their business enabling them to make real-time operational decisions that positively affect the performance of their business.

Although the impact of digitisation is not new, the Digital Economy is entering a new phase that presents unprecedented challenges for all stakeholders.

A move to a Digital Economy has had a profound impact on all involved in the built environment.Digital transformationDigitisation has provided opportunities for leaders to improve management decisions, enhance processes, develop new products and services and challenge traditional business models.

A digital strategy is of paramount importance. However, needs to be carefully considered to ensure technology is used for the profound impact it can ignite in our work, rather than using technology for technology’s sake.

Those involved in the built environment are also presented with the challenge of understanding how digital technologies can transform the environment around us.

Buildings are now expected to be ‘intelligent’, cities to be ‘smart’ and sensors are now widely used in areas of infrastructure ranging from airport baggage systems to water utilities’ distribution networks.

Our beliefAt Arup we believe that when harnessed correctly, technology has the power to create smarter approaches to shape a better world.

We are a global group of technology consultants who combine leading technical domain and market expertise to offer world-class advisory services and solutions for our clients.

Our work extends over a broad range of sectors, ranging from smaller projects to integrated market-led digital solutions that enable us to manage large-scale programmes. We work with our clients to translate how digital technologies can transform their approach by developing strategies, providing valuable insight, designing fit-for-purpose ICT systems and system architectures through to powering enhanced operations.

Our expertise

AviationIn aviation, data and information has always been available but has often been collated and presented in silos without the engagement from end users. Our expertise in aviation helps clients to integrate the people, processes and information to establish real-time airports, improve passenger experience, streamline critical processes, successfully transition new projects into operation and effectively manage risk. Our digital consultants can leverage data and technology to solve complex strategic and operational challenges.

EnergyDigital technology is having a profound impact on the way we manage energy networks from a supply and consumer perspective. Our focus on energy enables us to support the investment, development, management and regulation of smart energy systems in order to effectively manage increasingly complex supply and demand challenges whilst maximising economic potential.

PropertyOur experience in property helps clients to leverage technology to develop truly smart building solutions. We harness data and connectivity to create smart buildings that maximise building performance, improve energy efficiency, and synchornise events to improve occupant comfort and productivity.

RailThe vision to create the ‘Digital Railway’ will present significant challenges for the industry as a whole to think and operate differently and collaborate in ways that has never be seen before. Our knowledge of the rail sector enables us to offer our clients digital rail solutions that successfully integrate technology, people and processes to address key rail challenges such as meeting passenger expectations, mitigating operational risks, reducing whole life costs and paving the way for truly integrated and inter-modal transport solutions.

Sport & Major EventsOur digital technology solutions are transforming sporting and major events. We work with developers, clubs and venue operators to plan, build and run smarter sports projects and optimise visitor experiences for events, venues, sports parks or even entire sport cities.

We achieve this through our integrated specialist services in digital, lighting, multimedia and broadcasting systems, security, transport and wayfinding, venue management, logistics and operational readiness.

Water Our digital expertise helps water service providers realise their ambitions of smart water networks to tackle a range of industry challenges. Our digital consultants can leverage data and technology to help control costs, gain an accurate understanding of water demand and usage, drive efficient and sustainable operations, and inform effective investment planning.

Our projects

1/ Programme delivery dashboard for Croydon Council, LondonLondon Borough of Croydon (LBC) set Arup the challenge of planning on how to deliver an Olympics-scale regeneration programme that will se £4bn ploughed into development of the town centre. Arup gave LBC a tool: a tailor-made, web-based dashboard that allows the cumulative effects of projects to be easily understood and balanced, and their progressive delivery to be tracked and managed, all in real time.

2/ Heathrow baggage IT asset replacement programme, LondonArup is currently working with Heathrow to integrate the design and delivery phases of the IT asset replacement programme, providing both design and integration services. Arup established an enterprise architecture and operational model for the baggage programme that has enabled Heathrow to select optimum solutions, manage multiple stakeholders and maximise business impact.

3/ Sensing City, ChristchurchFollowing the earthquakes of 2011-12, the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, was faced with a huge task rebuilding itself. With the support of Arup, the Sensing City Trust was established to both create new and aggregate existing data sets providing an end-to-end, real time view of how the city functions. Data is collected on a range of variables including traffic flow and pollution to improve how the city functions.

4/ Ashgabat Olympic Complex, AshgabatArup was commissioned to design the IT and Communications, Timing and Scoring and Event Management requirements for the Ashgabat Olympic Complex project. Arup’s digital experts took a leading role in shaping the system design strategy for the Complex and the test events which will, eventually, culminate in the Opening Ceremony of the AIMAG 2017 Games.

5/ Bristol smart city strategy and future city initiatives, BristolArup has been working with the Council on a range of initiatives including setting up an “Innovation Unit” within the council to take Bristol’s future city service to the next level, along with an Advisory Board and developing a ‘Living Lab’ model for the city. Arup has also been involved on future city projects including Avon Strategic Flood Defences Study, Bristol Temple Meads Interchange, and Bristol Workplaces.

6/ Crown Estate Headquarters, LondonArup was commissioned by the Crown Estates to manage the IT implementation and function of their new headquarters. Arup’s services included IT strategy development, technology masterplanning, procurement, ICT and AV infrastructure design, programme and systems management.

7/ Melbourne Water Asset Management Strategy, MelbourneMelbourne Water set a new strategic direction that outlined its vision and commitment to transforming its service delivery and commercial models in operation today – to this end the Board and leadership team has established the Service Delivery and Commercial Transformational teams. Arup developed an Asset Management Strategy to support the implementation of Service Delivery whilst delivering a step change in value creation for customers and shareholders.

8/ Smart Olympic Park, LondonArup was appointed to develop a smart technology strategy for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park that would enhance people’s experience of the Park and attract inward investment. Arup’s work has ensured that smart technology can attract interest and investment in the Park, influencing how people live, work and play at the Park. The project has also achieved our clients ambitions of ensuring the park has had a significant and lasting impact on the landscape of London.
