2014 is starting positively on many frontsFitzgerald's has finished 2013 with five more salesachieved in December and the company has justcompleted four sales in January with another waiting inthe wings for completion before the end of the month.
Bank of Cyprus has just announced today (Cyprus Mail30th January) they are releasing close to €900million thatwere held in fixedterm deposits, blocked following thelender's recapitalisation last year’. The determiningfactors were ‘the significant improvement of the bank’sliquidity that has been observed in recent months and thesigns of stabilisation displayed by the deposit base,’according to BOC Chairman, Mr Hassapis”.
The biggest borrowers, apparently some 30 of them of which 22 of them are‘leading’ property developers, have notched up in excess of €6 billion in nonperforming loans. The Bank of Cyprus is poised to demand loan repayments andthe President of Cyprus, Mr Anastasiades, has offered his full support to the Bankof Cyprus CEO, John Hourican, saying that those who owe the financial institutionmoney have no option but to pay. (Cyprus Property news http://www.news.cypruspropertybuyers.com/2014/01/14/payshut/id=0016647 ).
The Cyprus property market has lost some more ground but also more buyers areeager to take advantage of the discounts. Constantly analysing the market andtrends, level of enquiries etc. Fitzgerald’s sees the prices as ‘healthy’. Someofferings are low but this is an opportunistic trend to test the market; for theproperties that are of high quality and deliver that ‘extra’, the prices are remainingstable. Fitzgerald's sell many properties and, according to our research and ourexperience this last year, the average selling time has also been reduced. This monthwe had a new listing that was sold two days after launching it on our website!
Sellers are happy because not only does our company have the marketing ability topromote each property in their portfolio but also, as a direct result, Fitzgerald’s hasbeen attracting more buyers in the last six months more than ever before. Sellershave been achieving, good realistic prices and the buyers love the quality togetherwith the security of the title deeds. However, from a sales point of view and intoday's market, even the standard of furniture is of vital importance and has becomea major factor in attracting the buyer.
It is important to note that more people are securing their title deeds at this time andthe Cyprus government has been making an issue of how many buyers over the lastdecade are still awaiting their deeds and how much money is tied up in this.
Releasing the deeds will ensure that equity comes back into the economy.

CarnivalOne of the brightest annual events inCyprus is definitely the Carnival.
Carnival begins 10 days before the Lent,or 50 days before Orthodox Easter, on theThursday of Kreatini (Meat Week, as it isthe last week for eating meat before theLent). Festivities start with the CarnivalKing entering the city, decorated for theoccasion.
On Sunday the youngest participate inthe Children’s Parade and then theSerenaders’ shows become the focus ofthe event. During the 10day Carnivalperiod many hotels and clubs organizefancydress parties.
The Sunday of the second week of thefestivities known as Tyrini (Cheese Week, when cheese and other dairy productsmay be consumed) is the climax of the Carnival. This is when the Grand CarnivalParade takes place.
So, What is Carnival?
It is an annual celebration of lifefound in many countries of theworld. And in fact, by learningmore about carnival we can learnmore about ourselves and a lotabout accepting andunderstanding other cultures.
Where did the word “carnival” come from?
Hundred and hundreds of years ago, the followers of the Catholic religion in Italystarted the tradition of holding a wild costume festival right before the first day ofLent. Because Catholics are not supposed to eat meat during Lent, they called theirfestival, carnevale — which means “to put away the meat.”
As time passed, carnivals in Italy became quite famous; and in fact the practicespread to France, Spain, and all the Catholic countries in Europe. Then as the
French, Spanish, and Portuguese began to take control of the Americas and otherparts of the world, they brought with them their tradition of celebrating carnival.
African influences oncarnival traditions
Festival arts are the ancient Africantraditions of parading and moving incircles through villages in costumesand masks. Circling villages wasbelieved to bring good fortune, toheal problems, and chill out angryrelatives who had died and passed
into the next world. Feathers were frequently used by Africans in their motherlandon masks and headdresses as a symbol of our ability as humans to rise aboveproblems, pains, heartbreaks, illness — to travel to another world to be reborn andto grow spiritually. Today, we see feathers used in many, many forms in creatingcarnival costumes.
Carnival arts offers all of us adynamic tool for selfexpression and exploration, atool to seek out our roots, atool to develop new forms oflooking at the world and itscultures, and finally, a tool tounite the world, to discoverwhat we all have in common, and to celebrate what makes usdifferent. The power andcreativity that underlies theseart forms can transform lives.
