On Tuesday morning at 8.00a.m. St. Patrick's Primary School students and staff gathered at the foot of the Hill in readiness for their great climb. The leader of our trek was Iron Man Glen who carefully led us to the top with an opportunity to explore some of the caves. The view and experience was magnificent and was a wonderful culmination to our Inquiry Unit about Pyramid Hill. Breakfast at the foot of the Hill was then provided by the Coffee Bank including Bacon and Egg muffins, ham and cheese toasties and cool drink. Thank you Iron Man Glen for your time and expertise.

More District History Part 13 - By Ern Ferris
Violent Dust Storm January 1903. There was another violent dust storm on Tuesday last that threatened to spread a pall over the country as dark as that which caused such alarm on “Black Thursday” November 1902. Dense clouds of dust carried along by a strong gusty wind traversed the countryside and dumped loads of dirt here and there in places where such an acquisition was neither expected nor desired. On the Swan Hill line beyond Kerang was so blocked with dirt that the train was three hours getting fur miles. The strength of the wind was such that it blew the roof off a cattle truck, though the weight of the detached portion was half a ton. Is the Mallee worth saving?” Nature seems to be replying in her own way. She certainly thinks its worth shifting. Warranga Basin. The drought of 1895-19002 brought home the need for irrigation in the northern plains as a method of providing a more constant supply of water for farming. Some schemes had been started but the serious nature of this drought enabled money to be raised for both new schemes to begin and for the older schemes to be expanded. The Waranga Basin near Rushworth had its main irrigation works begin in 1902 at the end of the drought, one of the worst known to have occurred in Australia. The not only attracted labourers, but some farmers badly hit by the drought. The farmers also bringing down their families to the works camp.. Many farmers took their horse teams to help build the Waranga Basin. Some rode bicycles home at weekends 1903 January 9. Work at Waranga basin was proceeding briskly, and there were about 100 men and 50 drays, and a number of scops and plough teams at work. It was said that the men are of good stamp and that the camp is increasing in size.
1903 February 6. From Bald Rock. Most of the farmers are down south, or have made for Waranga. I hear the former have got on very well and are able to find work for themselves and good grass paddocks for their teams. The few that are left here are in hopes that the year 1903 will be much better.
Mouse Plague April 21 1905. Since the recent rains the mouse plague appears to be stronger in the Mologa and Mitiamo district. Mr William Townsend, the well known farmer at Mologa destroyed 5,600 odd mice in 6 days. During the removal of 120 bags of wheat from the Mitiamo railway platform over 400 were killed. May 12 1905. The following shows the delivery from Government cool stores for April 1904 and 1905..Rabbitsand Hares pairs- 32,584 and 16,845. Rabbit--Trappers May 26 1905. A busy time in various parts, and while relieving landowners of a very trouble-some pest - are deriving a good weekly revenue from the sale of the rodents in Melbourne and other large centres. In the Cohuna and Gunbower districts we hear of men trapping as many as 1100 pairs on one selection in a very short time, over 60 rabbits being secured in one night with 70 traps set. The trappers become very expert in their work. The pest of mice is apparently being followed by an incursion of wood rats. Around Swan Hill, the latter have become very numerous, and reports have been received of the capture of some of them at Bald Rock. It is said that they prey on the mice, which no doubt cause them to be appreciated, if they are not otherwise destructive.. The Floods September 21 1906 The deluge of last week and its consequences have been the subject of most frequent discussions during the past few days. As regards flooding from Kow Swamp and Pyramid Creek and Bullock Creek, one has to get to the top of Mt. Hope to form an idea of the extent to which the escaped waters have spread. Many roads have been rendered impassable and traffic has been greatly hindered by washing away of bridge approaches.. Some along the Piccaninny Creek have been so much damaged as to necessitate considerable expense in repairs.
