Hello everyone
There’s a palpable buzz about the place this week as the preparations for Saturday’s Fair escalate and the anticipation of the big
event intensifies. The excitement will grow further this afternoon and tomorrow as the rides arrive, marquees are erected, goods are
delivered and the place becomes a hive of activity. Many thanks to all those who have volunteered to assist: with the set-up
(tomorrow and/or Saturday); with the stalls and activities on the day; and with the pack-up/clean-up (Saturday evening and/or Sun-
day). We are so lucky to have people willing to be so generous with their time and energy. Having said that, we still desperately need
assistance for the 7.30 pm timeslot on Saturday across a range of areas. Please contact Bek, Jacquie or Kylie W if are able to help
out. We also need more volunteer bakers for the Cake Stall. Cake and biscuit packs are available from school or, if you can’t get in
to collect one, please ring Narelle on 0425 845722 and she will arrange to get one to your child to bring home.
“What’s on at the Fair?” I hear you ask. Fancy a ride? You can choose from the UFO and Hurricane thrill rides, Dodgem Cars,
Chair-o-Swing, Egyptian Activity Inflatable, Surf Shack Slide and Clown Van (all from Auscorp Amusements), or have a go at all of
them. Please note that your pre-ordered wristbands should have arrived home with your children this afternoon. Maybe a sedate pony
ride (donated by Valley Park Riding School) is more to your liking. The Live Auction (at 5.00 pm) is always a major attraction (the
catalogue will be emailed as an attachment to this edition of the newsletter) and the Silent Auction in the Hall will have over 100
items on which you can bid until 7.30 p.m. You’re bound to get a little peckish during the day, in which case you can choose from: a
BBQ Brothers Souvlaki or BBQ corn on the cob (sponsored by Panoramic Pools); a wood-fired pizza from Soul Kitchen; a sizzled
sausage or vegi burger (sponsored by I Got Wood); a hot dog; an ice cream (Melbourne Ice Creams); or Popcorn and Fairy
Floss (sponsored by Balwyn Skin). These will probably give you a thirst so you can choose from: 99% fruit slushies (sponsored by
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Burwood): Beans for You tea, coffee, hot chocolate or chai (sponsored by Micro Image); or a tipple from the Beer
and Wine Garden (sponsored by Dick Reynolds Building) which will also have Beat Whip Lick Gourmet share platters available
(Sponsored by the Genitsaris Family). If you’re looking for something to take home, you could ‘fair’ no better than visiting the Cake
Stall in the hall where delicious cakes, biscuits and jams will be on sale.
Once refreshed, you can head into the Second Hand Book Stall in the Hall where 1000s of books will be for sale, priced from 50c to
$3 (Sponsored by Healthways Recreation Centre). If you can drag the children away from the rides, they will love: Painter’s Corner
where they paint their own masterpiece (Sponsored by Milo's House Preschool Literacy); the 3D Tattoos – tattoos that move and
groove on your arm (Download the FREE App: Miracle Tattoos); having their faces painted by Fairy Mary (Sponsored by Ace
Learning); or making a mini book, comic or creating a character inspired by the fair by Creative Write-It. The Chocolate Toss game
(sponsored by the Reynolds family) is always popular or visit the Photo Booth (Sponsored by Balwyn North Children’s Dentist) for
some fun shots.
5JM loved their Bubble Soccer session (provided by Corporate Bubble Soccer) last week, and you will also get the opportunity to
participate in this very entertaining and energetic activity. Latitude will have competitions and giveaways as will Vets on Balwyn,
while Magical Princess Entertainment will be providing Roving Performers. On the subject of performers, the main stage will host
a range of entertainers. We are particularly looking forward to seeing local acts the Little Stevies, comprising Miss Stephen and her
sister who play and harmonise beautifully, Mr Batt and friend in their acoustic duo (no independent critique available at this stage!)
and Mrs Hortin with her belly dance troupe which should be great!
The Gourmet Food & Boutique Craft Market on the synthetic grass courts will have gifts, toys, clothing, baked goods, helium
balloons, skincare, beauty products, hampers, tote bags, dog treats, stationery, candles, gift cards, cinema vouchers, henna tattoos,

BPPS FAIR
SATURDAY 3—8PM
Christmas decorations, jewellery, remedial therapies and blood pressure testing. First Aid, which we hope you won’t need, will be
available at the entrance to the OSH Club room (Colbrow Medics 1st Aid sponsored by Vets on Balwyn). If you run low on cash, an
ATM machine is available (Provided by OzKane ATMs) and EFTPOS payment facilities will be available at the Token Stalls and
for the Live Auction (Provided by the Commonwealth Bank). And then to finish it all off at 8.15, the magnificent Fireworks Display
(Southern Cross Fireworks) will be launched from the top oval. Please note that the top oval will be fenced off. Your best vantage
points for the fireworks will be from outside the fence along Almond St, from the front car park or … from anywhere around the
school! Remember, the action is in the air, not on the ground, so you don’t actually need to be able to see the top oval to enjoy the
display!
We were thrilled to host children’s author Meredith Costains on Tuesday when she returned to the school to work with a group of our
Grade 6 writers. Olivia Tsiandikos, Maya Gale, Thomai Goutzioulis, Anika Walker, Ella Scott, Jamee Simas and Katerina
Loutas were selected to assist Meredith to brainstorm and workshop ideas for her new book, part of the Ella Diary series. Meredith
had also specifically asked Cristina Di Pietro and Mimi Dassanyake to re-join her for the session as she had been very impressed
by their ideas and input last time – quite an honour for the girls.
It was great to see BPPS so prominently represented in this week’s local council’s publication, the Boroondara Bulletin. There were
four photos of our children travelling to or from school by means other than vehicle to accompany the article on Walk to School
Month and the Boroondara Active and Safe Schools initiatives.
The Kay-Kneebone family wish to convey their appreciation to the school community for supporting Jasper’s participation in the
National Athletics Championships in Sydney next week. All their raffle tickets were purchased which was extremely helpful in
covering the costs of Jasper’s involvement. Thank you to all those who bought tickets.
We are very proud of the four members of our staff who completed the Eureka Tower climb last weekend. Congratulations to
Mrs Hortin, Miss Amiconi, Ms Fava and Mr Longmuir whose brave and energetic efforts raised money for the Whitelion and Inter-
plast Foundations while finishing 13th Team overall. A brilliant effort made all the better as they were wearing BPPS tops! Please see
Mrs Hortin’s comments elsewhere in The Press.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Friends,
I thought that it was time I gave you an update on the school review process. The review team, led by John Marks (independent re-
viewer) comprised the leadership team, School Council President and two principals from other schools. For two days the group ana-
lysed and discussed the wide range of numerical data sets (student learning results and opinion surveys) and anecdotal information
from the parent and student forums. It was an amazing group to be part of as the team diversity enabled deep discussions and reflec-
tion. John Anderson (School Council President) and Phil Smith (Vice-President) provided great insight from the point of view of par-
ents from our school. The two external principals, who were aptly named ‘challenge partners’, came into the process without pre-
conceived ideas about our school. This meant that their input was impartial and invaluable in terms of challenging our thoughts. The
process is rigorous, prescriptive and has set us up well for our future strategic planning until 2020.
As a result we have started to develop our direction for our school for the cycle of the next four years. Many of our future directions
build on the achievements of the past four years. One of these is to continue the ongoing commitment to sustainable practices. An
example is The Keen Green Team which will continue in 2017 with support from CERES which is an organisation who can lead us
through the learning modules of Sustainable Schools Program. CERES can also support teachers to direct sustainable curriculum as
well as the ‘hands on’ components of this learning module.
We routinely use common assessments such as PAT tests and on demand testing to support the teacher judgements and we will con-
tinue to analyse the results so we target specific learning needs. Accessing the data has been made easier by our Sentral data base, so
sourcing this evidence provides a good base for future curriculum planning and assessment. Improving our knowledge in relation to
data literacy will be a future area of focus.
One of the ways that we can build consistency across the school for learning is to develop an instructional model of teaching that is
clearly understood and implemented. We have started work on this, by adopting the work of Bill Rogers after all staff attended the
professional learning on one of our Pupil Free Days. Since then staff have been involved in establishing rules, consequences and ap-
proaches to manage their classrooms and address student behavioural concerns. We are aiming for consistent and clearly articulated
approaches across the school to enable students to fully understand the expectations for their behaviour and learning.
Even though the official review is every four years, the cycle of school review never stops at BPPS. We are
constantly reflecting, analysing and researching ways to get better and prepare our students for their future
world. It is a very exciting process to be involved in.
Enough of thinking about what might be happening at BPPS in 2020 - what about in two days’ time! I had a
turn at bubble soccer last week and am very excited about seeing you all have a go on Saturday. See you at
the fair.
Cheers,
Jane Woodman

The ‘Artist of the Week’ for next week will be Charly-Rose Wen from 3LA. Charly-Rose cre-ated a picture featuring a mountainous background with a lake in the foreground. The landscape involved coniferous trees un-der moonlight. Charly-Rose was able to cre-ate the impression of a beautiful reflection on the water and the illusion of depth in her work. Well done Charly-Rose. Chris Trollope & Jennifer Hortin

EUREKA CLIMB On Sunday 13th November, four Boroondara Park teachers took on the Eureka Climb, climbing
over 1600 steps to the 88th floor of the Eureka Tower in Melbourne City. Proudly wearing their
Boroondara Park Basketball singlets, they took on this challenge to test their own fitness, and to raise money for two significant charities, Whitelion and Interplast. Mrs Hortin, Miss Fava, Miss
Amiconi and Mr Longmuir thank those members of the school community who sponsored them, enabling them to raise $392. It’s not too late if you still want to contribute to these worth-
while charities. Just follow the link to our fundraising page until the end of the month.
