IntroductionWelcome to the global family ofproud owners of fine audiocomponents from GryphonAudio Designs of Denmark.Your new Gryphon unit hasbeen painstakingly designed tore-create the sound of livemusic taking place in its origi-nal recorded space. EveryGryphon product is designedto cater to the needs of the mostdiscerning music enthusiastwith sumptuous styling andsuperb user-friendliness whichelevate it above themundane world of con-ventional audio compo-nents.

As audiophiles, themembers of the Gryphondesign team are constantlyreminded to keep their priori-ties straight. We are notinvolved in “hi-fi” for its ownsake, but strictly as a means toan end, in the service of ourlife-long love of the live musicexperience in all its sonic andemotional glory.

Our higher goal is to bring tothe listener a “You-Are-There”sensation. In taking up thischallenge, the Gryphondesigners go back to basics toanalyze the essential nature ofthe live music experience. For

us, an awareness of soundstag-ing, ambience and concert halldimensions are necessary com-ponents. Dynamics and anunambiguous sense of instru-ment location even in the loud-est passages are also high pri-orities. To achieve these objec-tives, Gryphon products offerexceptional speed and agilityalong with seamless coherencein the time domain.

Since 1985, Gryphon AudioDesigns has quietly gone aboutthe business of creating fine

home audio components.We know that you willappreciate and enjoy thebenefits of our accumu-lated experience andshare our abiding pas-

sion for music.

The ManGryphon Audio Designs is thebrainchild of Flemming E.Rasmussen and the fulfillmentof a lifelong dream to allow thepurest essence of the live musicexperience to be recreated inthe home environment.

Rasmussen holds a degree inpainting and graphic arts fromthe Aarhus Art Academy,Denmark. During his studies,Rasmussen developed closerelationships with the localmusic community anddesigned many LP covers andconcert posters. After gradua-tion, he taught photographyand painting and designed tex-

tiles, before founding 2RMarketing, which quicklybecame Denmark’s leadingHigh End audio import compa-ny.

Gryphon Audio Designs wasfounded in 1985 as an offshootof 2R Marketing, The first prod-uct, the now legendaryGryphon Head Amp, grew froma one-off spare time projectdeveloped only for the design-ers’ own home systems.Although the Gryphon projectwas initially strictly a hobby, notan actively pursued commer-cial venture, demand generat-ed by reviews and word-of-mouth led to the formal estab-lishment of Gryphon AudioDesigns as a separate corpo-rate entity.Following the immediate suc-cess of the Gryphon brand, allimport business was phasedout in 1993, so that Rasmussencould dedicate his effortsentirely to Gryphon.

The GryphonMaster TapeCollectionIn the Gryphon listening rooms,we have over the years used aunique library original mastertapes of recordings made dur-ing the Golden Age of studioengineering from 1956-1976.Unlike conventional commer-cial releases, the master tapescapture the dynamic contrastsand subtle inner harmonicstructure of the musical event,forcing us to work to a higherstandard in our efforts to main-tain the integrity of the originalmusical performance.

tive and technical perform-ance. The dual mono configurationradically eliminates any possi-bility of crosstalk or other inter-ference between channels andprovides infinite channel sepa-ration which contributes to theability to create space, focus,depth and transparency.

Because the electrical powercoming out of your wall fluctu-ates wildly in terms of voltageand distortion, Gryphon incor-porates heavily regulatedmulti-stage power supplies thatact as effective mains condi-tioning filters. Displays andcontrol circuits are fed by aseparate power supply to iso-late any digital noise artifactsand effectively prevent themfrom contaminating the signalpath.

While the printed circuitboards in more conventionalaudio products, utilize conduc-tor tracks a mere 35 um thick,Gryphon employs at least 70um traces of the highest purity.

Beginning with our very firstproduct, “The Head Amp” allGryphon products have fea-tured extremely wide frequen-cy bandwidth, because theability to reproduce ultra-sonicfrequencies with no difficulty

ensures linear phase across theaudible frequency range.

The implementation of circuitswith wideband frequencyresponse is a painstakingendeavor in which the actuallayout and ground pattern ofthe PC boards are crucial to theachievement of superior sonicperformance with no loss ofinherent stability.

Wideband frequency responseensures the high slew rateessential to the realistic han-dling of the ultra-fast transientswhich routinely occur in livemusic and is crucial in recreat-ing the natural decay of musicalinstruments. Wide bandwidthalso improves phase character-istics, for more correct sound-staging and imaging.

All Gryphon designs are real-ized with an absolute minimumof negative feedback, whichwhen present in large amountscan actually increase TIM dis-tortion. All Gryphon preampli-fiers are designed with zeronegative feedback. Gryphonpower amplifiers apply nega-tive feedback judiciously forimproved linearity and band-width.

Gryphon research into thedetrimental effects of magneti-

cally induced distorted (MID)has led to the elimination ofmagnetizable materials wher-ever possible. To eliminate theeffects of stray magnetic fields,non-magnetic materials areemployed throughout, with theunavoidable exception of thetransformer shield box.

The mechanical design of thecabinet and assembly methodsare all carefully calculated toensure minimal resonance,either through the use ofmechanically grounded highmass or decoupling. Vibration-sensitive components, capaci-tors in particular, are thus guar-anteed a non-resonant environ-ment.

The heavy, thick chassis offers avibration-proof environmentfor the sensitive electronicsinside and provides crucialshielding from a polluted worldof low and high-frequencyradio waves, power-line radia-tion and other electrical inter-ference. Meticulous attention tosuch issues makes a significantcontribution to the relaxing,open and transparent Gryphonsound.

Unique, non-invasive protectioncircuitry offers reliable, fuss-free protection without compro-mising signal purity and signal

path simplicity, with no conven-tional relays in the signal pathto degrade or compress sound.

The ground path has been care-fully laid out in order to achievesuperior sonic performancewith no loss of stability.Component layout has beendesigned to ensure the shortestconceivable signal path.

Exhaustive investigation under-lies the selection of every com-ponent part and many original,proprietary components arecustom-built exclusively forGryphon. Because what is leftout is just as important as whatgoes in, an absolute minimumof internal wiring is included.

By lavishing attention on eachaspect of the circuit and fullyunderstanding the purpose andbehavior of every single part ofthe whole, our designers canoptimize performance in eachsection, before moving on tothe next step. This ensures sim-plicity, a short signal path and aunity of purpose with a single,well-defined objective: musicalpurity.

In the interest of ultimate fideli-ty, tone controls, balance con-trols and other unnecessarycomponents have been ban-ished from the signal path.

In every Gryphon product,form follows function in aunique synthesis of aestheticsand practicality. Gryphonstands for sophisticated tech-nology with a high standard ofindustrial finish that also incor-porates the best of handcrafts-manship.The peerless finish, build quali-ty, ergonomics and pride ofownership that contribute tothe totality of the Gryphon con-cept can only be fully under-stood and appreciated up closeand in person.

Rasmussen’s background infine arts and industrial designgives every Gryphon product adistinctive, luxuriant finishwhich arises organically out ofthe audio circuit design and theuser interface for a truly uniqueintegration of form and func-tion.

Manufacture andAssemblyAt our laboratories and manu-facturing facilities in Denmark,we maintain full control overevery aspect of developmentand production, and the mem-bers of our conscientious staffdiligently follow each Gryphonmodel from initial concept toearly prototype, through to finalquality control.

Printed circuit boards areassembled by a supplier of pre-cision military and medicalequipment with strict standardsof quality control and pre-inspection of components.Chassis parts are manufacturedby a specialist chosen solely forthe outstanding quality of work-manship. In every aspect ofevery Gryphon product, thesame stringent standards ofexcellence apply.

Following a 48-hour burn-in,each product is tested again,before being subjected toGryphon’s custom-developedtransport simulator which simu-lates the inevitable shaking thata product will encounter intransit. The product is placedon top of a very large loud-speaker which plays a specialCD with low frequencies which

simulate the vibrations of anairplane. Each unit “travels” theequivalent of 40 round tripsfrom Denmark to Australiabefore leaving the factory.

AC VoltageYour Gryphon unit is especiallymade for the AC voltage of thecountry to which it has beenshipped. If the voltage has beenchanged, the warranty is voidand the product may be unsafeor malfunction.

Correct AC polarity con-tributes greatly to optimumperformance. If you are notusing a three-pin, non-reversible power plug, pleaseexperiment with the orientationof the plug for optimum per-formance.

Burn-In andWarm-UpYour Gryphon unit has beenthoroughly tested and burnedin before shipping.Performance will continue toimprove during the first 40 – 50hours of normal use. After thisperiod optimum performancewill be reached approximately45 minutes after turn-on. Withthe exception of Class A poweramplifiers, we recommend

leaving your Gryphon compo-nents powered up at all times.

PlacementCare must be taken to positionthe Diablo only on a stable sur-face which can reliably supportthe weight of the amplifier. Theamplifier's heat sinks havebeen carefully designed andplaced to optimize heat dissi-pation for ideal cool operatingconditions. In order for theheatsinks to operate effectively,there must be ample air circula-tion around the Diablo at alltimes.

Do not place the Diablo on ornear any source of heat. Do notplace any object directly on topof the Diablo. Do not place theDiablo in an enclosed spacesuch as a cabinet, unless ampleventilation is provided.

Menu-activatedfunctionsThe Gryphon Diablo incorpo-rates several functions whichare accessed via a Menu sys-tem.

To access the Menu, pressMenu. MENU will appear in thedisplay. Exit will blink. To enter

the menu, press input up/downand then monitor. Diablo 300will mute its outputs.If you do not wish to access themenu-controlled functions,press Monitor when exits blink.you will then return to normalplayback mode and default dis-play.

When you enter the Menu,NAME INPUT will appear in thedisplay. Press Menu again tomove through the menu-con-trolled functions in the follow-ing order:

Name Input - Change MaxLevel - Change Start Level -Brightness - Input level match -Restore Settings - Dedicateinput 3 to AV - Continue/Exit

At the end, you can either con-tinue from the beginning of thelist or exit the Menu. To returnto the top of the list, pressMonitor and NAME INPUT willappear in the display. To exitthe Menu, press an Input buttonso that EXIT blinks in the dis-play, then press Monitor toreturn to normal playback andto the normal display. Any set-tings which you have changedare automatically stored inmemory.

Naming Inputs

You can assign a specific nameto each input, either a pre-pro-grammed standard name or acustom name of your choice ofup to 8 characters. When NAMEINPUT appears in the display,press Monitor. SELECT INPUT: 1will appear in the display. Tochoose a different input fornaming, press an Input buttonto move up or down through thefive inputs. When the number ofthe input which you wish toname is displayed, pressMonitor. CUSTOM will blink inthe display. If you wish to createa custom name for the input,press Monitor and skip to sec-tion 1.a. below. If you wish toselect a name from the standardlist, press an Input button sothat STANDARD blinks, thenpress Monitor and skip to sec-tion 1.b. below. Please note: If aname has previously beenassigned to the input, that namewill be deleted if you pressMonitor while STANDARD isblinking.

1.a. If you have chosen customnaming, CUSTOM will appearin the first line of the display.The selected input number willappear in the second line, fol-lowed by a colon (:) and a cur-sor marking the first position in

the 8-character name whichyou can create. If a customname has already beenassigned to this input, it will bedisplayed. To select a character(letter, number, symbol, emptyspace or punctuation mark) forthe first position, continuouslypress one of the Volume buttonsuntil the desired character isdisplayed. Press Input Up tomove to the next position, thenuse the Volume buttons toselect the desired character.Repeat for each character in thename. If you make a mistake orchange your mind, use theInput Down button to moveback and change a previouslyselected character. When thename is complete, pressMonitor. The name is nowstored in memory and will bedisplayed each time you selectthat input. NAME INPUT willappear in the display. You cango back to step 1 above toname another input or pressMenu to select the next menu-controlled function.

1.b. If you have chosen standardnaming, SELECT STANDARDNAME will appear in the firstline of the display. The selectedinput number and the firstname in the standard list (CD)will appear in the second line.To select the name which youwish to assign to the input,

press the volume buttons tomove up or down through thestandard name list in the follow-ing order:

CD – DVD – DSD – TUNER –TAPE – PHONO – AUX

When the name which you wishto assign to the input is dis-played, press Monitor. Thename is now stored in memoryand will be displayed each timeyou select that input. NAMEINPUT will appear in the dis-play. You can go back to step 1above to name another input orpress Menu to select anothermenu-controlled function.

Setting MaximumLevelYou can select and store inmemory a maximum volumelevel (between 0 and 42) whichcannot be exceeded, manuallyor by remote, until you re-setthis function. This effectivelyprotects your audio systemfrom expensive accidents.When CHANGE MAX LEVELappears in the display, pressMonitor. MAX LEVEL: and thecurrently assigned maximumvolume setting will appear inthe display. To change this set-ting, press Volume Up or Downuntil the desired maximum vol-ume level is displayed. Press

Monitor. The selected maxi-mum volume setting is nowstored in memory. CHANGEMAX LEVEL will appear in thedisplay. Press Menu to selectthe next menu-controlled func-tion.

Setting Start-Up LevelYou can select and store inmemory a default volume level(between 00 and 26) which willautomatically be set by theamplifier each time you turn iton. When CHANGE STARTLEVEL appears in the display,press Monitor. START LEVEL:and the current default startlevel will appear in the display.To change this setting, pressVolume Up or Down until thedesired start level is displayed.Press Monitor. The selectedstart level is now stored inmemory and will be set eachtime you turn on the amplifier.CHANGE START LEVEL willappear in the display. PressMenu to select the next menu-controlled function.

Setting DisplayBrightnessYou can select and store inmemory the desired level ofbrightness in the front-paneldisplay. When BRIGHTNESSCONTROL appears in the dis-

play, press Monitor. 100% willappear in the display. Choosebetween 100%,75%,50%,25%and Off. Press an Input buttonrepeatedly until the desiredlevel of brightness appears.The display will immediatelychange to the selected bright-ness, unless you have selectedOFF. If OFF is selected, the dis-play will turn off after you exitthe Menu. Press Monitor. Theselected brightness level isnow stored in memory. BRIGHT-NESS CONTROL will appear inthe display. Press Menu toselect the next menu-controlledfunction.NOTE: When the display isturned completely off, pressingany button on the front panel oron the remote will cause thedisplay to turn on briefly so thatyou can see the current volumelevel and selected input. Pressa second time to activate thedesired function.

Input level matchWithin the level match menu,you must choose the input thatyou wish to adjust. This is donewith the input up/down but-tons.After you have selected yourinput you can increase thelevel in 2db steps from 0 db - 8db.

Default is 0 db. on all inputs.

Restoring DefaultSettingsYou can delete all of your cus-tom Menu settings and return tothe factory pre-set default set-tings. Doing so deletes all inputnames, sets Maximum Level at42, sets Start Level at 00, setsBrightness at 100% and setsInput 3 as a normal audio input.When RESTORE SETTINGSappears in the display, pressMonitor. RESTORE? appears inthe first line of the display. NOand YES appear in the secondline. NO will blink. If you doNOT wish to delete your customsettings, press Monitor, whileNO is blinking, then press Menuto select the next menu-con-trolled function. If you do wishto delete all your custom set-tings, press Input Up until YESblinks, then press Monitor. Youhave now deleted all your cus-tom settings. The factory pre-set default settings are now ineffect. RESTORE SETTINGS willappear in the display. PressMenu to select the next menu-controlled function.

Assigning Input 3 as aDedicated AVConnectionYou can use the power amplifi-er section of the Diablo and

your normal stereo loudspeak-ers with a separate surroundprocessor by connecting theleft and right front channelsfrom your surround processorto Input 3 of the Diablo andusing the Menu to configurethis input so that the signalbypasses all preamplifierstages in the Diablo. This allowsyou to enjoy the full perform-ance of the Diablo for stereoand surround listening withoutplacing any surround compo-nents in the stereo signal path.

CAUTION: When Input 3 is setup as a dedicated AV connec-tion, the Diablo’s volume con-trol is automatically set at afixed level. The signal from thesurround processor goes to theDiablo power amplifier sectionand MUST be calibrated andattenuated by the surroundprocessor.

When DEDICATE INP.3 TO AVappears in the display, pressMenu to select the next menu-controlled function, if you doNOT wish to connect the leftand right front channels from asurround processor to Input 3of the Diablo. If you do wish tomake a dedicated AV connec-tion, press Monitor. WARNING!NO ATTENUATION will blink inthe display for 5 seconds, after

which you will be asked to con-firm that you wish to configureInput 3 as a dedicated AV con-nection which bypasses theDiablo volume control. AREYOU SURE? will appear in thefirst line of the display. NO andYES will appear in the secondline. NO will blink.

If you do NOT wish to make adedicated AV connection, pressMonitor while NO is blinking,then press Menu to select thenext menu-controlled function.If you do wish to make this con-nection, press Input Up so thatYES blinks in the display. PressMonitor. Input 3 is now config-ured as a dedicated connectionwhich bypasses the Diablo vol-ume control and should ONLYbe used with a source whichhas its own volume control,such as a surround processor.NEVER connect a normal line-level source such as a tuner, CDplayer, etc. directly to this input,while it is configured in thismanner. You can always restoreInput 3 to normal operation viathe Menu.

When you have configuredInput 3, DEDICATE INP.3 TO AVwill appear in the display. PressMenu to select the next menu-controlled function.

Exiting the MenuWhen CONTINUE and EXITappear in the display, you caneither exit the Menu or return tothe beginning of the list ofmenu-controlled functions.

To go to the top of the list, pressMonitor while CONTINUE isblinking.

To exit the Menu, press an Inputbutton so that EXIT blinks, thenpress Monitor to return to nor-mal playback and to the normaldisplay.

Subwoofer connectionThis output allow you to con-nect a active subwoofer or asecond poweramplifier.

12v LinkThis is a connection allowingcertain Gryphon models toexhange information.

BalancedConnectionsAll Gryphon products uses theAES standard for balanced con-nections.1. Ground2. Positive3. NegativeWe recommend the use of ded-icated balanced cables. Avoidthe use of adaptors as theydegrade performance.

Diablo Volumen control.A unique new volumencontrolwas developed for the Diabloand this new principle will infuture be found in all Gryphonstop of the line products. It is nota digital devise but a discretesolution based on fixed resis-tors in a ultra short signal pathinvolving a very smal numberof relays selected for perfectfunction and sonic “invisible”qualities. This technology cansometimes - depending on thematerial played - make a verysmal clicking noise when used.This is not a sign that anythingis wrong and is normal.

Choice of CablesBecause your Diablo integratedamplifier is a high-resolution

Gryphon audio device, it willimmediately reveal the charac-teristics and possible limita-tions of the other componentsin your system, as well as thoseof the interconnects and loud-speaker cables used to connectyour system.Wiring should never be utilizedas "equalizers" to correct errorselsewhere in the system.Instead, any error should becorrected at the source, so thatinterconnects and loudspeakercables can be selected solelyon the basis of sonic neutrality.For this reason, we employGryphon's own range of inter-connects and cables in everystage of the design of everyGryphon product.

Care/MaintenanceGryphon products are hand-crafted by individuals who takegreat pride in the high level offit and finish which we achieve.To maintain your Gryphon com-ponents in pristine condition,please follow these simpleinstructions.

Metal surfaces may be cleanedwith a damp cloth. Some prod-uct made for treatment of vinylinteriors in cars may be useful.

Test the product on a non-visi-ble surface, before using anyfluids.

Acrylic surfaces should only bewiped with a very soft, drycloth. Small scratches may beremoved with fiberglass polish.Fingerprints may be removedwith a damp cloth. Do NOT usespirits or paper tissue.

Placement:Do not place your Diablo on top

of any heat producing products,

such as power amplifiers or

DACs. If you place the Diablo

inside any Hi-FI furniture or cab-

inets, there must be a clearance

of a minimum of 10cm (4 inch-

es) above the product and a

minimum of 5cm (2 inches)

along the sides. To allow a flow

of cooling air the back of the

cabinet must be open. If these

guidelines are not observed,

overheating may result.

Mains Switch:To place your Diablo into stand-

by mode use the main switch.

The switch is located in the bot-

tom on the right side just

beneath the acrylic front panel.

Switching between MM and MC The selection of MC or MM is made with jumpers JP100, JP102, JP104, JP300, JP302, and JP304
