Development and Special Events Marketing: We’re going to need another trophy shelf in the board room! We’ll be bringing home FIVE national Marketing & Communications Awards from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America national conference in May. We won the Silver Award for Comprehensive Marketing Strategy and Gold Awards for Publications, Special Events, best use of the “Great Futures Start Here” branding statement, and best use of the Blue Door. We will receive $4,000 for our efforts. This has been a very busy month for the marketing/ publications side of things as we prepare to promote our summer programs. We’ve developed the summer program book, summer contracts, summer program flyers, a bus safety brochure and more. Our spring newsletter is also in progress. We sent press releases for spring break, new violin classes, golf tournament, and Twilight. The OC Register is interviewing Tanya and two children who have received scholarships for their arts skills and we hope to see an article in the paper in the next few weeks. BGCA Activities: We finished up our participation in the National Youth Outcomes Initiative. We should get the results of our surveys in the fall. We also finished up coordinating the Pacific Region’s Digital Arts festival. Throughout that project, we recruited expert judges for six artistic categories, monitored entries for appropriateness and copyright infringement, made sure judges completed their scoring on time, helped judges with technical problems, and submitted nominations for winners based on judge’s scores. We are proud that one of our Huntington Beach Branch members was a regional winner for graphic design! Grants: We received $25,000 from the LA Times Family Fund for our Oak View summer reading program. This a $10,000 increase over last year due to the program’s great success last summer. 2 nd Harvest approved our requests for summer food programs at both Twilight and Oak View. We sent requests to Wells Fargo Foundation (Twilight), the OC Community Foundation’s Marshall Fund (summer arts programs at Twilight and Oak View), the Orange County Register Campership program (Oak View summer program), Deacon Charitable Fund (Twilight), and Rite Aid Foundation (Sports). We also submitted reports/ invoices for OCTA, OJP, City of Fountain Valley, Golden West College and Children’s Bureau grants. Building Dreams Campaign: We talked with our program officer at the Weingart Foundation. We will be unable to submit two separate requests for each phase of the campaign. So, we can either make a request for the school age club only, or we can make a request for both phases together. We must have 50-75% of the total cost of the phase(s) for which we are requesting support already donated at the time we make our request. We sent a letter of inquiry to the Schlinger Foundation. Our next capital campaign fundraiser, the Pins for Kids Bowling Tournament, is coming up on August 2nd. Registration is $250 per team of four. If you’d like to register a team to bowl, please email Art at [email protected] or give him a call at 714-531-2582. Events: Our golf tournament is coming up quickly on May 14 th . If you have not already registered, send in your registration form or talk to Art or Tanya to reserve your spot. If you’d like to volunteer on the day of the event, please let Art know. April was a month full of

activities and celebrations!

Curriculum has included

spring and the letters “V” and

“W” for the older children.

The kids dressed up wacky

for Wacky Wednesday and

had a special watermelon

treat! Seeds were planted

and the kids took care of

them and watched them

grow. Staff has been getting

very creative in their ways of

teaching the alphabet. Our

oldest age group of 4-5 year

olds have embraced and

welcomed a new participant

in our program, Gaige.

Gaige is a special needs child

who is bussed over to us by

the Ocean View school

district bus and requires a one

on one aid to work with her.

The YMCA Y Inclusion

project pays for this one on

one aid so Gaige can attend

our center and work on her

social skills along with

building relationships with

her peers. So far it has been

a great learning experience

for all involved!

On April 22nd some of the

classrooms will be

celebrating Earth day by

cleaning up our schools

environment. The children

will be walking around the

center picking up trash and

will be discussing keeping

our earth clean by recycling.

Robert Mayer Child

Development Preschool, HB April 7th – 11th we will

celebrated Week of The Young

Child; this year’s quote again

was “Early Years Are Learning

Years!” According to the

National Association for the

Education of Young Children

(NAEYC), the purpose for the

week of the young child is…

“To focus public attention on

the needs of young children

and their families and to

recognize the early childhood

programs and services that

meet those needs.” We

celebrated all week long with a

variety of activities done in the

classroom like creating

banners, making bookmarkers

and kites, and also reading

quotes parents wrote about why

they think their child is special.

We also offered a special

mother figure and child

breakfast, “Muffins with Mom”

and a separate day for “Donuts

with Dad.” The week

ended with a phenomenal

carnival where we did

crafts, played carnival

games and had clowns do

face painting.

April 24th and 25th we

will be ending the month

by taking our annual

school portraits.

ClubHouse Academy, HB The month of April has

been a productive month for

the Athletic Department as

we kick-off our 2014 Spring

Leagues for Basketball and

Arena Soccer.

Our basketball league has

been very busy and

entertaining with games that

run from Monday through

Thursday. We have a full

league with 341 players in 43

teams spread across 5

divisions. Our Arena Soccer

league games are played on

Friday nights and Saturday

mornings; and we have 226

players on 27 teams in 5

divisions. They play their

games in the Kingston

Branch and Huntington

Beach gymnasiums, as well

as the Huntington Beach

Branch outdoor soccer arena.

All of this is made possible

by all our volunteer coaches.

We truly appreciate all their

hard work and dedication for

all our members.

At the ClubHouse

Academy, we plan to open a

brand new violin class that

will begin on May 1st, 2014.

The class will be offered every

Thursday and Saturday. The

instructor for this class

specializes in teaching young

and beginning students as well

as in preparing more

experienced students for further

advancement and achievement.

The ClubHouse Theater

program is hard at work

preparing for its upcoming

production, The Nifty Fifties.

We have 4 cast lists with a total

of 95 members. The Nifty

Fifties will be performed in late

June /early July.

Our ClubHouse Dance

program is also preparing for

their upcoming dance recital at

the Saigon Performing Arts

Center. Ms. Karina’s classes

will perform A Whole New

World on Wednesday, June 25,

2014, and Ms. Allison’s classes

will perform From the Page to

the Stage on Thursday, June

26, 2014. It will be an exciting

event and our members and

families are looking forward to

participate in the shows. For

more info, contact CHA.

Kingston Branch, Fountain Valley Page 3

We have been very busy

this March and April here at

the Boys & Girls Clubs of

Huntington Valley, Kingston

Branch! We hosted Boys &

Girls Clubs Week, had a St.

Patrick’s Day Carnival, had a

Kindergartener’s St.

Patrick’s Day scavenger

hunt, and we participated in

the Image Makers national

program contest.

Every day we had a new

theme for our members to

participate in. For example,

World-Wide Wednesday was

dedicated to celebrating

every member’s heritage.

Members were encouraged to

wear clothing to represent

their own unique culture. We

also had our very popular

Rocket Challenge. The entire

week we had the members

collaborate on creating and

designing a rocket out of a

two liter soda bottle. On

Friday, we launched all the

rockets! The members loved

seeing how far and high

some of them could go.

Our annual St. Patrick’s

Day Carnival was also a

great success! With tons of

new carnival games, face

painting, and relay races, the

kids enjoyed a sunny day

outside. We also created a

staff challenge for this

carnival. The teens and staff

participated in a relay race to

challenge both parties. The

teens came out victorious this

time.

Our St. Patrick’s Day

scavenger hunt was a

wonderful surprise for our

Spring is in the air and our

club is growing wild with

activities. In March we had a

Spring Music Recital. Our

children preformed nine

songs from past and present

artist’s to the delight of their

families and friends. Our

music program is a huge hit

with our members and

continues to grow. Our next

recital will be in the summer.

Throughout the course of the

year we receive a lot of

volunteer service. The last

volunteer event was with

Experian Consumer Services.

Experian’s Digital Marketing

Team, consisting of 20 of its

team members, arrived

ready, willing and able for

any tasks. For two solid

hours the Experian team deep

cleaned every room in our

club. Wahoo! After they

finished the deep clean the

Experian team ran fun games

and activities for our

members for the next hour.

What a great experience for

all parties. This will a great

prototype for volunteer

experiences to come.

Thank you Experian.

Keeping with the breadth

of volunteerism and

community service, our

Torch Club did a beach

clean-up. Ten club members

descended upon Beach

Boulevard and Pacific Coast

Highway to make our

community better place to

live. With gloves on and

bags in hand our members

went to town picking up all

the trash they could. For two

hours they cleaned up our

local beach to make it nice

for the next beach visitors.

Huntington Beach Branch

surprised when they

entered their room that

day. A leprechaun

made a mess in their

room and left clues to

encourage them to

search for him! They

solved each clue, which

took them all around

the club and finally

ended back into their

Kinder room where

there was a pot of gold

waiting for them! Even

though our kinders

didn't catch the sneaky

leprechaun, they had a great time

trying to find him.

Spring Break is approaching,

which means Twilight

members have been busy

with presentations and

activities. Twilight parents

received an informative

presentation on stress

management, which helped

them understand the

importance of balancing their

lives and limiting their

amount of stress. Parents

enjoyed the presentation and

were grateful for the new life

skills they learned. With

Easter being around the

corner, preschool teachers

were getting activities and

lessons ready for the spring

season. This month the

teachers focused on the oval

shape. They incorporated

eggs to familiarize the

children with the oval shape.

The children at Twilight have

continued to learn more and

more and we will continue to

provide an educational

environment for our

members. In the past month,

Twilight has continued to

work with Surf City Rotary

Club who provides the food

program for the families. The

food program continues to

serve an average of 80 – 90

snacks bags a week. They

recently surprised the

families with peanut butter

and jelly jars. It was great to

see a smile on the parents’

faces when they received

their food. Rotary Club

continues to be a great

service to the families.

Twilight

Education,

Golden West

College Campus

members. It was great to

witness the children excited

to accomplish such

prestigious feat together and

with a great attitude. Lastly,

two weeks ago, we had our

basketball championships; it

was a great opportunity to

teach the students the

importance of good

sportsmanship. For many

kids, it was the first time

they had won on a team and

for others it was their first

time being upset over a loss,

so there were many

conversations over the

course of the week with

students on the meaning

behind wins and losses.

Oak View held many events

through this last month,

many which brought a lot of

excitement for the kids.

Boys and Girls Club Week

proved to be very memorable

for the kids as they were

honored for academics, art,

and community service. This

week allowed them to reflect

on what they were doing to

fulfill the mission of Boys

and Girls Club, many

realizing that they needed to

find an avenue to excel in.

During this week, we also

participated in the Wanna

Play World Record

Challenge, which proved to

be an exciting event for the

Learning Center Child Development

Preschool, FV

Enrollment has been steady

for the last couple of months;

in the last few weeks we have

conducted many tours for all

our age groups and our

waiting list is starting to grow

in many of the classrooms.

This month the children,

teachers, and administrators

have been busy planning and

celebrating the Week of the

Young Child. The children

did different activities during

the week; on Tuesday we had

“Muffins for Mom” and on

Thursday we had “Doughnuts

for Dads”, we had a great

turnout and parents left

happy and very thankful. To

end the celebration, we had

our “Week of the Young

Child” carnival on Friday,

April 11. Parent Committee

members prepared the crafts

for us at home and on the day

of the event we had 32 parent

volunteers, three clowns from

the Volunteer Clowns of

Orange County, and our very

own Mr. John Pham and Sem

Ibrahim came to help with

the carnival. There were

many activities, including

face painting, glitter art

tattoos, arts and crafts, and a

very special “Petting Zoo”

with pony rides. The

younger children had their

very own Week of the Young

Child carnival with arts and

crafts and a Bounce House.

It was a very crazy and fun

filled week for the staff,

parents, and children at the

Learning Center.
