DEVELOPING A RESEARCH PROJECT DURING
RESIDENCY
Mohammad Hassan Pervaiz, MD

OBJECTIVES
To familiarize new residents with available RESEARCH RESOURCES
To identify key steps for research PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
"Every path to a new understanding begins in confusion." Mason Cooley
WHAT IS “RESEARCH”
inquire into
systematic investigation to establish facts
“Research” is an active, diligent and systematic process of inquiry in order to discover, interpret or revise facts, events, behaviors, or theories, or to make practical applications with the help of such facts, laws or theories.
TYPES OF MEDICAL RESEARCH
• Clinical Research
a-Retrospective (chart review)
b-Prospective
c-Meta-Analysis
d-Clinical Trials
e-Epidemiological Research f- Health services/ Policy analysis
• Basic Science
a-Animal research
b-Non-animal research
Which ones are for residents ??

INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD• UCRIHS is an Institutional Review Board (IRB)
UNIVERSITY COMMISION ON RESEARCH INVLOVING HUMAN
SUBJECTS
Federal and University regulations require that all research projects involving human subjects and materials of human origin be reviewed and approved by an IRB before initiation
UCHRIS
Under the regulations, all investigators (faculty &/or graduate students) who will conduct research that involves human subjects or materials of human origin (blood or tissue samples taken from live humans) must submit an application to UCRIHS
Approval of the research protocol must be in place before the investigator begins data collection.
IRB Reliance is an agreement between MSU and Sparrow Hospital which allows an investigator to have a research protocol undergo IRB review through UCRIHS, and Sparrow will accept the review of the lead institution

HIPAA
The Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act
UCRIHS reviews HIPAA related research protocols at the same time as the regular UCRIHS review
DEVELOPING YOUR OWN PROJECT
• SELECT YOUR AREA OF INTEREST• SELECT A RESEARCH MENTOR• FORMULATE A RESEARCH QUESTION• COLLECT BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND DEVELOP
A HYPOTHESIS• DEVELOP A PROJECT PROTOCOL• APPLY TO IRB (UCRIHS)• START PROJECT AFTER IRB APPROVAL• INTERPRET AND ANALYZE COLLECTED DATA• FUTURE PLANS (may include one or more of following)
~ Dissemination of results (presentation, publication, etc) ~ Further data collection ~ Grant submission
IRB REQUIREMENTS FOR RESEARCH PROTOCOL
• RESEARCH STATEMENT• ABSTRACT• PROJECT DESCRIPTION
~ STUDY DESIGN~ SAMPLE SIZE JUSTIFICATION~ STATISTICAL ANALYSIS~ BACKGROUND
INFORMATION~ REFRENCES
• CONSENT PROCESS• HIPAA
“EMR”
• COMPUTERIZED DATABASE• AVAILABLE ONLINE• EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR EFFICIENT DATA EXTRACTION• CONTACT DR. ZAROUKIAN• IMPORTANT TO INFORM DR.ZAROUKIAN EARLY DURING
RESEARCH DESIGN DEVELOPMENT• CONTACT DRS. BOUKNIGHT AND/OR DR.LAIRD-FICK IF
INTERESTED IN CLINIC QUALITY ASSESEMENT STUDIES USING EMR.

RESOURCES FOR STATISTICS
• MSU INTERNAL MEDICNE FACULTY• MSU CENTER FOR STATISTICAL TRAINING AND
CONSULTING: (CSTAT)• CSTAT can provide consulting on
• Research design/experiments/surveys • Selection of appropriate statistical methods • Selection of statistical software • Statistical analyses • Interpretation of results • Presentation of results
• Referrals • CONTACT: www.cstat.msu.edu
MSU RESEARCH ELECTIVE• 2 blocks of research time allowed
• all paperwork to be submitted at least 6 weeks prior to the start of elective.• A letter from you stating your desire to do a research rotation or continuity
experience. Letter must identify:• Your research mentor • The research topic• Outline of the research plan• Expected product of research experience (e.g. paper or poster)
• A letter from your research mentor. In the letter it must be stated that the mentor has agreed to work with you and the letter specifies:
• Research topic• Research plan• Any patient contact during the research rotation.• Agreement to evaluate you at the end of the rotation using our form.• If you are requesting a weekly research experience spanning several months, your
research mentor must agree to fill out an evaluation each quarter that you are involved in the weekly research experience.
