Cover Story

We are in the infancy of Michigan’s 2019 boating season so it seemed appropriate to spotlight boats on our

cover. The cover really has multiple meanings starting with the larger scene. Pictured is a shot of Midway dock

at the Detroit Yacht Club, home of the Detroit Power Squadron and former home to this editor’s 40’ SeaRay

Express named Winelite for our appreciation of famed jazz musician Grover Washington, Jr. and his piece

called Winelite.

The second row is in honor of our Commander Wendy Caldwell, S and her boating history. Pictured is the

family 1979 25’10” Carver w/fly bridge named Why Knot. The following two pictures are of her spouse P/C

Dave Caldwell, JN and their children Kelly and Steven when they were just little boating mates, followed by

P/C Dave aboard the Carver.

The third row begins with Loafin’ Around, the 1992 35’ Carver Aft Cabin maritime home of P/C Vince Cooley,

AP and Lt Delphine Cooley. S. Docked at Great Lakes Yacht Club where the two spend most of their weekends

and happily welcome visitors. Next, P/C Bill Smith, AP and his son Michael in days gone by at their dock on

Parkview in Detroit as they prepare to take a ride in his 19781/2

21’3” Wellcraft named River Rat. Then a shot

of the Drewek family boat in the slip behind their home at Lottivue. Finally, a shot of boaters enjoying our De-

troit area waterways.

The fourth and final row represents our three officers engaging in DPS events. Left we have Lt/C Darlene We-

ber, AP with P/C Mitch Gawrysiak, JN; in the middle is Commander Wendy, S and Lt Maureen Smith at our

DPS Steak & Corn Roast; and finally Lt/C Al Schwaller, JN standing outside the restaurant where P/C Gail

Graham, S had her 2018 Commander’s Breakfast.

Detroit Power Squadron

The D/9 Spring conference held in Grand Rapids, Michigan April 12th-14th was a great

success! There were seven Hospitality Rooms creatively decorated to match the squad-

ron's selection of their island of the Great Lakes.

The Detroit Power Squadron selected Beaver Island with a lumberjack and fishing

theme. Lt Delphine Cooley, S created nearly eighty buttons (samples shown on the left)

that carried the Beaver Island theme and used them as part of a give-away for our hospi-

tality suite.

DPS wore buffalo plaid shirts, and enjoyed two styles of chili from Chef Bryan Bartlett

and Chef Delphine Cooley. Pine trees were dispersed around the room and buffalo

plaid garland draped along the ceiling of the room, with a night sky of silver stars cling-

ing to the curtains, including the Big and Little Dipper. Our room was a focal point for

many as we had numerous guests staying until 1:30 am!!! Yawn! That made for a chal-

lenging wake-up for the am meetings!

All eighty buttons were attached to the wall with four concealing one part of a raffle

ticket. The other corresponding parts were attached to four prizes. Visitors were invited

to select a button for a chance to win a prize. The prizes were a “One damn thing after

another” note pad, three pair of lumberjack themed socks and two bags of “beaver nug-

gets” (a.k.a. corn nuts). Lt/C John Haley, AP of the Flint Sail and Power Squadron and

Sandy Wilhoit, (pictured on next page) Isle Royale seminar speaker won the “beaver

nuggets.” Amy Dyer, daughter of P/R/C Ron LaPlante, SN of the Mount Clemens Power

Squadron won the lumberjack themed socks. P/C John Sulkowski, AP of Grosse Pointe

Power Squadron, won the "One damn thing after another" note pad. Also, pictured on

page 2 are DPS members P/D/C Bryan Bartlett, SN and P/C Bill Smith, AP at the food

table; P/C Vince Cooley, JN and Lt Delphine Cooley, S showing off their costumes; our

hospitality room mascot; and the Cooleys and Lt Maureen Smith. Thanks to Lt Delphine

for supplying the photos.

The conference offered an interesting array of seminars, Invasive Species, VSC, Michi-

gan DNR, Isle Royal, Boating Activities, Membership and PR. Newsworthy is the

change in the 2019 boating and fishing laws. Use the website "www.michigan.gov" and

type in boating laws, to get a good summary and reference guide of information.

In conclusion, kudos to Detroit Power Squadron for taking 2nd place in D/9 for total

VSCs, and for individual VSCs, P/C Mitch Gawrysiak, JN 2nd place, and P/C Bill Smith,

AP and Lt. Maureen Smith both capturing 3rd place! Also to Dumping Grounds editor,

Lt. Dara Brooks, P for a Publications Award in 2018. The efforts and skills of our mem-

bership make their commander proud!

Detroit Power Squadron

Greetings from your

new District Commander,

As you all know, I love the fun part of

conferences and events, but I also be-

lieve deeply in the serious side of our

organization, the United States Power

Squadrons, America’s Boating Club.

We have always been very strong on

the educational and safety focus of the

squadron. However we need to expand our focus regarding

the effect that boaters have on the environment; that is main-

taining water quality and reducing, or eliminating the spread

of invasive species, especially here in the Great Lakes. With

the change in Michigan laws regarding the transference of in-

vasive species by boat and trailer, it is imperative that we

stress this when we are teaching classes and doing vessel safe-

ty checks. Each of us can help by picking up trash, on the

beaches, in the water and by not littering in the first place.

This year I hope to not lose another squadron. We have sever-

al squadrons that are struggling to fill bridge positions and

maintain membership. We may want to consider consolidation

in order to provide our members an opportunity to continue

their comradery. Growing membership is also a major con-

cern. It appears that the loss of members has slowed, however

we need to build up our numbers.

I would like each of you to think

back on how you joined or were

asked to join, then put that plan back

into action. If you joined through a

class and someone asked you, you be

that someone at a class asking the

question. If you joined through work,

church, social club or other social

interaction, be that person spreading

the information and making the

invitations. You are the membership

committee, we can’t rely solely on

the Squadron, District or National to

spark the potential joiners, it’s up to

each of us to make the pitch!

I know that most everyone enjoys the

social aspect and many are into the

serious side only, but we all need to

promote the United States Power

Squadrons, America’s Boating Club

for what it is “For Boaters, By Boat-

ers” and promote safer, happy expe-

riences on the water.

Thinking into the future and our Fall

Conference, our seminar schedule

will be lighter because we generally

don’t do all of the officer seminars,

so please think about what you

would be interested in as subject

matter and respond to the proposal

posted on page 11. Thanks to you all

for your participation.

Meanwhile, wishing everyone…

A Safe Voyage

and

Smooth Sailing

Throughout the Year.

Weather Proverbs, Sayings and Observations

One of the beautiful things about USPS and our fellow

members is that although we are individual squadrons we

are also “one”. Each of us has a tremendous amount of

knowledge just there for the sharing.

Case in point, the USPS Spring Conference at Orlando is

always a good place to not only share ideas with other

squadron members from across the country but it’s an op-

portunity to read their publications. As editor of the DPS

Dumping Grounds I am always on the lookout for important

information and cool ideas to make our publication more

valuable to our readers. While reading the Columbus Sail

and Power Squadron November 2018 publication Galley

Gossip I ran across a few cool words from Commander

Richard C. Sorensen, SN. With his permission I am reprint-

ing it and others to come.

Lt Dara Brooks, P

DISTRICT 9 POWER SQUADRON

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

PLANNING

Plans for the 2019 District 9 Fall

Conference scheduled for Octo-

ber, 2019 are underway. In order

to make this conference signifi-

cant for all participants D/Lt/C

Ralph Ziegler, JN is calling on all

USPS® D9 members to submit

proposals for the seminar, work-

shop, and entertainment portions

of the schedule.

The bringing together of all Dis-

trict 9 members for a weekend of

learning, sharing and having fun

has been a long time tradition for

our organization. In order to

meet the needs of our members

we need to know what skills are

needed and what informational

sessions are wanted. If you have

a recommendation, submit it!

TOPICS OF INTEREST

Don’t be shy! You are encour-

aged to think outside the box,

offer new ways of learning the

same material by creating enthu-

siasm. Consider presentations on

new boating technology and

apps; the latest boating products

and cool new boats; equipping

your sailboat and power boat;

presentations on the Great Loop

and other long term boating trips;

the new trend in boat sharing;

Great Lakes environmental issues

including invasive species; regu-

lation changes in Canadian and

U. S. waters and much, much

more. Cruising Clubs are invited

to submit proposals for presenta-

tions explaining the benefits of

their clubs. Let’s not forget how

to develop presentation skills for

speakers; increasing membership

and retention; conducting more

effective meetings; skills for the

treasurer; more effective web-

sites; and more effective publica-

tions. Members with specific

skills are invited to submit pro-

posals for unique topics related

to the boater.

REQUIREMENTS

All proposals should include pre-

senter’s name, rank & grade;

name of presentation; length of

presentation; Q&A; topic with

detailed description which in-

cludes purpose and expected out-

come; what audio/visual equip-

ment needed and any break out

sessions included.

Please submit your proposals no

later than July 15th to:

D/Lt/C Ralph Ziegler, JN at

[email protected]

and

Lt Dara Brooks, P at

For Your Consideration

Fellow boaters, as we move into the boating season we cannot just think of the fun of it. We have to be vigi-

lant. Because of our seasonal weather many of us have not been on the water or near our marinas on a regu-

lar basis since late fall. Keep in mind the basic safety principle that water and electricity do not mix, are dan-

gerous and potentially fatal. Many docks are electrified to add to the boater’s convenience. There is no visible

warning sign of electrified water which means we have to be extra careful as we swing into the new season.

Lt Dara Brooks, P
