ABOUT THE DETROIT METRO AREA Metro Detroit is a term we throw out liberally around here. It can refer to as many as 10 counes in southeast Michigan that are included in various U.S. government stascal designaons. More commonly, it refers to the three counes that contain or border the city of Detroit — Wayne (Detroit falls in here), Oakland and Macomb. You’ll oen hear it called the tri-county area, too. Metro Detroit is big, covering nearly 2,000 square miles. For context, the city of Detroit makes up about 140 of those — San Francisco, Boston and Manhatan equal less than 120 square miles combined. Detroit: COSMOPOLITAN. INDUSTRIOUS. SAFE. Up-and-coming restaurants, a do-it-yourself attitude, new hotels, scenic and social parks, public transit, bike lanes and a walkable international riverfront are redefining Detroit. Architecture from Albert Kahn and Isamu Noguchi lives next to all-night joints selling loaded Coney dogs and Prohibition-born speakeasies pouring locally crafted beer and cocktails. The city’s Greektown, Eastern Market, The District Detroit, Corktown and Midtown neighborhoods are booming with activity. Three Vegas style casinos operate 24/7. Must see museums, including the world class Detroit Institute of Arts, celebrate art, music, science and African American history. Foodies can’t keep up with the burgeoning restaurant scene, with more than 100 new restaurants opened in the past five years. Four professional sports teams—baseball, football, basketball and hockey--play in new and state of the art stadiums within a four block area. More than $11 billion in new development has been infused into the Downtown area, attracting businesses large and small and adding more than 20,000 new employees to the Central Business District. Wayne: HISTORIC. DIVERSE. DRIVEN. Spanning east and west of Detroit’s downtown, this large region is rich with the character of African- and Arab-Americans as well as neighborhoods infused with Mexican, Polish and Italian heritage. Experience culture and community in vibrant Southwest Detroit and in the Polish village of Hamtramck. In Dearborn, dive into The Henry Ford — the nation’s foremost museum dedicated to ideas and innovation, home to important historical artifacts like the Abraham Lincoln chair, Rosa Parks bus and the first automobile built by Henry Ford. Middle Eastern dining, the rolling hills of Hines Drive and the thriving downtowns of Wyandotte and the Grosse Pointes are must-sees and –dos. Wayne County is the home to Detroit Metropolitan Airport, one of the nation’s busiest airports and hub of Delta Airlines. The airport offers more than 1,100 flights per day to and from more than 140 nonstop destinations on four continents. Oakland: UPSCALE. CULTURED. FUN. The tree-lined suburbs of Oakland are a 20-to-40-minute drive north of downtown Detroit. Here, we love the finer things in life. The cafe scene. A good meal. The outdoors. A show. From the happenin’ and posh downtowns (Royal Oak, Rochester and Birmingham) to the Detroit Zoo, there’s plenty of fun and friends in the Oakland District. Retail shopping is plentiful in Oakland, with outlets featuring name brands and unbeatable prices alongside upscale malls offering high end designer collections. There is no shortage of attractions, that’s for sure. In addition to the fabulous zoo, Legoland Discovery Center, Great Lakes Crossing, Meadowbrook: (the auto baron mansion of the Dodge family), Cranbrook Art Museum, open air concert venues, manicured parks, bike paths and pristine golf courses await. Hotel options abound, with both value options and chic and trendy addresses. Hot spots such as Ferndale and Royal Oak light up with music and other entertainment after dark. Oakland is also one of the region’s high tech corridors, with job creation and diversification transforming Oakland County’s economy from manufacturing based to knowledge based.

Macomb: ACTIVE. NAUTICAL. LAID BACK. Metro Detroit’s “East Side” is a mix of waterfront fun, food, shopping and nightlife. A 30-to-45-minute drive northeast of downtown, this boater’s paradise has friendly restaurants and marinas on glorious Lake St. Clair. Discover bike paths, a pet-friendly outdoor mall, a minor league baseball stadium and plenty of entertainment along the M-59 Corridor. The Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, one of the most splendid auto baron mansions, sprawls along the glistening lake. Metro Beach Metropark, one of the most popular parks in the metro Detroit region, beckons to boaters, hikers, swimmers and nature lovers. Shopping options have exploded in Macomb over the past several years. From big box to boutique, there are more than 2,900 retailers in the county. Advanced manufacturing, automotive, defense and healthcare are among Macomb’s most successful industries. MEETING IN DETROIT TCF Center: The Center of it All In 2015 after a $279 million renovation, TCF Center in downtown Detroit features 723,000 sq. ft. of exhibit hall space and 623,000 sq. ft. of contiguous exhibit space. A good taste of Detroit flavor Suburban Collection Showplace: Another world-class convention center, Suburban Collection Showplace, is located in the metro Detroit region. It added an adjoining Hyatt Place hotel in 2013 and recently completed another expansion that added thousands more square feet of meeting space. Suburban Collection Showplace is Michigan's premier exposition, conference, and banquet center.
