Facts about graduations:

It is said that the first graduation ceremony was held at Oxford University in 1432.

The cap and gown ritual began in Europe’s earlier universities.

ROBES

Traditionally black, the graduation gown has been subject to colorful makeovers in recent years, and many universities are now using the robes as an opportunity to show school spirit.

GRADUATION HOODS

The academic hood tells the person who looks at it which degree you have.

For the undergraduate degree, there is no hood at all.

There’s a sort of small hood for the Master’s Degree.

For the PhD, there is a big, very colorful hood.

MOTORBOARD

The mortarboard is also known as the graduation cap.

It more of a fashion statement than a significant meaning.

Whether or not a mortarboard is worn during commencement is decided upon by the institution.

TASSELS/TURNING OF THE TASSEL

The students wear their tassel to the right is because during the “turning of tassels” section in a graduation, it symbolizes the student no longer is a candidate of graduation but now officially a graduate.

It is common for graduation tassels to have small hanging charms attached noting the years of graduation.

The color of the tassel links you as fellow graduates across the nation and across the world.

STOLES

Stoles are worn over a student’s black graduation gown and come’s to rest on their shoulders.

Graduation stoles are also popular for various awards or honors bestowed upon graduates such as being named class valedictorian.

Students who are members of Greek letter organizations may choose to wear graduation stoles that coincide with the colors of their societies.
