The Master’s Word

Greetings from the East,

Summer is coming to an end and our schools are back in session. The school supply drive was a big suc-cess again and Thompson Elementary School staff were very pleased to receive the many items donated by Desoto Lodge. The Principal expressed a need for Socks and Underwear since their young students sometimes have accidents and need a change of clothes. We accepted this challenge and the money collected from our Ha-waiian Shirt Family Night will go toward this worthy cause. Well done Brothers!

September 17th we will have our Past Masters’ Luncheon from 11am till 2pm. Please come down and celebrate with some of the Brothers that have made Desoto Lodge what it is today. To the Past Masters of Desoto Lodge, I thank you for your service and dedication to our Lodge.

On October 18th we will be having our Deputy District Grand Master (DDGM) Official Visit. Please come and support our own Right Worshipful DDGM Greg Wynn and Desoto Lodge.

I want to highlight something very special to me— the DeMolay. DeMolay is an organization dedicated to preparing young men to lead successful, happy, and productive lives. Basing its approach on timeless princi-ples and hands-on experience, DeMolay opens doors for young men aged 12 to 21 by developing the civic aware-ness, personal responsibility, and leadership skills so vitally needed in society today. DeMolay combines this seri-ous mission with a fun approach that builds important bonds of friendship among members in more than 1,000 chapters worldwide.

Paul Revere Chapter Order of DeMolay was chartered in 1920. How have they survived when so many have failed? I believe it’s because the Brothers of Hillsborough Lodge commitment to support these young men. I don’t know how many of these young men go on to become Masons or better yet active Masons within Hills-borough or other Lodges but I would bet the percentage is high. The Brothers do not expect recognition but strive to make a difference in these young men lives and their community.

We talk of Lodge Renewal and doing a better job guarding our West gate. A little time spent in support of these young men now will pay dividends in the future of our fraternity.

How can we do this? Recognize their achievements.

1. Attend their meetings. Encourage brothers to go to a meeting at least once a Quarter.

2. Attend their events or fundraisers

3. Attend their Officer Installation

4. Invite them to your family nights. They have several lectures such as the Flower Talk which is per-fect for Family Night just before Mother’s Day.

5. Invite them to your installation of Officers

The youth of today are the future of our Fraternity and our country. Our youth organizations are our best tool to have an impact on that future.

From the West,

To the Brothers, Sisters, Friends and Masonic Family; First of all, I would like to say Thank You to Brothers Bill Kain and Steve Robb. They have pressure washed the outside of the building. The next step is to get some minor repairs for things like cracks and missing stucco on the window sills. If you are able to help in this phase, please call me (Cell 757-635-2195) and let me know. Once the repairs are com-plete, we will have a painting party with brushes, paint food and drink. What is a Hero? If you were to walk up to a stranger and ask? What is a hero”? The answers would typically include or reference Military Service Members Law Enforcement (City Police, FBI, Secret Service and US Marshall) and Firefighters. These are people that volunteered to put the public’s well-being ahead of their own. I theorize that there are many more people than what we have been told about. These are the people who without any prior information or consid-eration are able to take action without any direction or guidance. A Couple of examples of this: 1) A runner in the woman’ track event, that had a collision with another runner on the track and one went to the ground. Instead of staying in the pack to win the medal, she stopped and helped the other runner up and to the finish line. 2) Another one I saw was a young girl about 5 years old. She went to a Red Cross collection site and was going to give them her bears so it could be sold and the money used to help pay for needed supplies. In both of these cases, the Hero gave something of themselves to help others. Organ and Blood Donors could fall into the same category. What is a Hero to You? Fraternally,

Fraternal Greetings Brother's

First and foremost, I want to thank all the Brothers and Sisters for their support over the last ,month. I have

made an effort over the last two meetings to elevate our meals and make them special by providing a great meal

and on real plates and silverware and with clean simple decorations. I have watched the men before me do great

and wonderful thing in the South and I see this as the next step in growing our Lodge. They, and so many, have

set the bar so high for me, the only step was to break out the fine china. When I made this commitment last

month, I laid down a challenge for Brothers to come out and support our meals financially but to come early and

help set up and stay late to help clean up. I was met with overwhelming support. Roni-Kay and I thank each and

every person for lifting such a huge part of the responsibilities off our shoulders and sharing the load. For our

Family Night meal in support of our First Responders and Law Enforcement personnel, we had an awesome turn

out. We served 72 meals and had several Hillsborough Deputy Sheriffs eat and also take meals to go. I would like

to thank all the men and women who put themselves in Harm’s Way everyday to continue to make this country

safe.

We had a Date Night at Desoto #105 on August 19th hosted by RW Lee and his wife Doreen. We played

Lodge Olympics and had a great meal in effort to collect greatly needed shoes for our local schools. We collected

21 pairs of shoes from the event and had a ton of fun. We will still be collecting new children's shoes for a few

weeks so there is time if you'd like to donate.

Finally, I have no menus at this time for our upcoming meetings other than to say that we look forward to

seeing you there. We will have plated meals the rest of the year and I look forward to watching us grow together.

CHAPLAIN'S CORNER

LABOR DAY AND DAILY EXERCISE

Monday, September 5 is Labor Day – the day most of us put aside to enjoy family outings and things like boat-ing, fishing, swimming, picnics, games, fireworks, and such. It is a great time of fun and stuffing our faces with ex-treme calories to make our bellies bulge! We all pay the price for that over-indulgence, don’t we? That’s where exer-cise comes into play, right? Burn off those extra calories!

Let me talk about a different kind of exercise here. Dr. Stephen Covey is very well known for his book and program, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” Very briefly, the seven habits that he prescribes are: 1) Be Pro-Active; 2) Start with the End in Mind; 3) Put First Things First; 4) Think win-win; 5) Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood; 6) Synergize; and 7) Sharpen the Saw.

This last one, Sharpen the Saw, has to do with relaxation – fun – exercise. Physical exercise, on a regular ba-sis, is very important! We all need to get away from the table and easy chair, and get out and exercise, whether it is some sport, physical labor, or just walking. It will strengthen our bodies and give us more energy and stamina to face the rigors of life in our society.

I heard a lecture by a psychologist (Dr. Gwendolyn Grant) years ago that I thought I’d share with you this month. It is a daily regimen for success. While it is not literally physical exercise, it is daily exercise that will help us deal with those great moral virtues in our fraternity as we strive to improve ourselves in Masonry.

Sunday: GIVE UP Give up old negative habits. Give up saying “I can’t,” give up doubting, envy, worry and resentment.

Monday: PEP UP Stop dragging around looking sad. Be enthusiastic. Smile.

Tuesday: THINK UP If you think down, it will keep you down. Think positive.

Wednesday: TALK UP Repeat these words, “I can live a better life.” Talk like a winner.

Thursday: TIGHTEN UP You can take it, even failure. Don’t be at loose ends; focus on prosperity now.

Friday: GET UP Don’t just sit there. Get up. Save yourself from a do-nothing life.

Saturday: STAND UP You must stand for something or you’ll fall for anything.

These are called the “Seven Ups” for a successful, fulfilled person. They are a good guide as you go through the daily routine of life. We must be upright, just, and honorable in our daily walk. To do that, we need to be resolved not to let the daily routines get us down and keep us down. We need to face each day with the determination to be the best man we can be, and let it show to those around us.

It’s Labor Day month. Let’s labor to improve ourselves, and every day, in every way, get better and better! That’s the true way of a Mason.

Masons in the Old West

History of the Grand Lodge of Arizona

In the latter half of the nineteenth century the American frontier was comprised of the western territories from

Oklahoma to the Pacific Northwest. The news media of the time focused attention on the western territories

and undoubtedly played a significant role in the inexorable wave of intrepid pioneers, settlers, opportunists and

prospectors that flooded into the territories. That period of time is often referred to as 'The Old West' or 'The

Wild West'.

“The year 1882 was a time of hardship and danger in Arizona. The Territory had a small white population living in

widely scattered communities. Although the Southern Pacific Railway had recently completed its main line across

the southern part of the Territory, it was of little help to the inhabitants, since most of them lived in remote districts.

Roads were little more than trails, and due to heavy mountain snows and summer storms, they were impassable

much of the time. At all times there was also constant danger from roving bands of stage coach robbers and

Apache Indians. Travel on the main roads was done in either four or six horse Concord stage coaches or in buck-

boards; on the mountain trails it was done by horseback or muleback. Danger of attack by marauding Indians

made it necessary to do much of the travelling between twilight and dawn. And, of course, few comforts for the

weary traveller were to be found at the journey's end. Therefore, it was under such trying conditions as these that

the early Masons of Arizona managed to perfect the organisation of the Grand Lodge and to attend the regular

meetings of their local Lodges. Indeed, it was not until 1895 that northern and southern Arizona were connected by

rail, thus making possible a steady increase in Masonic membership and in the number of Chartered Lodges

throughout the Territory.” ~ Gould's History Of Freemasonry Throughout The World

Arizona is the backdrop of many movies and novels about the Old West. Western novelist Zane Grey regularly

spent time on the Mogollon Rim near Payson, Arizona. Early motion pictures depict Arizona cowboys and

lawmen portrayed by actors such as Tom Mix and John Wayne. In those movies the heroes and villains were

sharply defined and a clean-cut cowboy always, "saved the day."

However, novels and movies seldom depict an even greater legacy that a few pioneers and settlers brought

with them as they populated the territories. They brought morals, values and a strong sense of brotherly love,

relief and truth with them. They brought Freemasonry to the territories.

In 1863 political concerns and the pressures of the Civil War were largely responsible for the separation of the

Arizona territory from the New Mexico Territory. That year President Abraham Lincoln appointed John A.

Gurley as Governor of the newly created Arizona Territory. He was to establish a government thus ensuring

that Arizona Territory and its resources would be and remain under Union control. Governor Gurley died be-

fore he could arrive in the territory. John Noble Goodwin was appointed by President Lincoln in his place.

John Goodwin, a Freemason, and his party arrived in the Arizona territory in December 1863. He established

the territorial capital of Prescott, approximately twenty miles from Fort Whipple. In 1864 nine Master Masons

held a meeting in Prescott at John N. Goodwin's house. Brother Goodwin presided at the meeting. After satis-

fying themselves that all present were Master Masons, those nine Masons decided to apply to the Grand Lodge

of California for a dispensation to open a Lodge at Prescott.

The name selected for the new lodge was Aztlan. Brother John T. Alsap, who later became

the first mayor of Phoenix, was chosen as its first Master. Brother Goodwin was chosen to

present the petition to the Grand Master of California. Brother Goodwin presented the peti-

tion on April 23rd, 1865, and the dispensation it requested was granted. In January 1867,

after the California charter had been granted, Aztlan Lodge No. 177 was duly constituted

and the officers installed by Past Master John Martin.

Freemasonry had officially arrived in Arizona.

Thereafter, four more lodges were formed in succession. These four are Arizona Lodge in

Phoenix (1879), Tucson Lodge in Tucson (1881), Solomon Lodge in Tombstone (1881),

and White Mountain Lodge in Globe. All but White Mountain Lodge were chartered by the Grand Lodge of

California. White Mountain Lodge was chartered by the Grand Lodge of New Mexico in 1881.

On the 23rd day of March, 1882, representatives from these four lodges convened in Tucson for the purpose of

considering the propriety of establishing a Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons for the Territory of Ari-

zona.

A committee was formed to examine the credentials of the attending delegates, and after its satisfactory report,

it was resolved that by virtue of the powers vested in the members assembled it was right and proper that a

Grand Lodge for the territory should be formed. A constitution was adopted and it was formally resolved,

"That a lodge of Master Masons be opened for the purpose of organizing

and opening, in Masonic form, the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Ma-

sons for the Territory of Arizona.

Officers were appointed to fill the stations and places and a Lodge of Master

Masons was opened in ancient Masonic form. The various officers were

elected as follows: Ansel Mellen Bragg, Grand Master; John Tabor Alsap,

Deputy Grand Master; Alonzo Bailey, Senior Grand Warden; William Ar-

thur Harwood, Junior Grand Warden; Abraham Marx, Grand Treasurer; and

George James Roskruge, Grand Secretary.

On the 25th day of March, 1882, the grand officers were installed and the

Master Masons Lodge was closed in the ancient Masonic form, the conven-

tion having accomplished the business for which it was called, adjourned

sine die.

The Grand Lodge was then opened in proper form, with music by a choir

and prayer by the Grand Chaplain, after which it examined and endorsed

the charters held by the various lodges represented. Then it was decided

that, "The Grand Lodge claimed as the boundaries of its jurisdiction the

whole of the Territory of Arizona," and further, that the Grand Master be authorized to endorse the charter of

Aztlan Lodge when called upon to do so. On March 25th, 1882, after installing the grand officers and accom-

plishing the business for which it was called, the Master Masons Lodge was closed in ancient Masonic form,

sine die.

Aztlan lodge later became a chartered member, and together the five lodges forming the Grand Lodge had a

total membership of 274 Masons. Those five original lodges are still in existence today and are designated

'Territorial Lodges'.

Note: Tom Mix and John Wayne mentioned above were Masons. John Wayne (born: Marion Robert Morri-

son) was entered, passed and raised at Marion McDaniel Lodge No. 56 in Tucson, Arizona. Tom Mix was

raised at Utopia Lodge No. 537 in California. Brother Mix was a pall bearer at the funeral of legendary Ari-

zona lawman Wyatt Earp.
