JETT BUTLER // IMAGES IN COMMUNICATION // FALL 2012

a collaboration with Scott Eshbaugh

OBJECTIVE: Document a single subject (chosen by the student), then combine that image with a specific word (also chosen by the student) and phrases (given by the professor) to create a series of five posters.

Scott and I chose “xylophone” as our word and “where things end” as our subject. Through this exercise, we took away all possible meaning that could be derived from the content. This made me focus solely on the formal decisions based on the image and typography. These limited options also made me push my composition farther than I normally would. Through this project I’ve learned that formal decisions could create authority just as much as the meaning of the words. Additionally, I was able to develop an iterative process to create more interesting compositions.

RILEY TRIGGS // DESIGN AND THE SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT // FALL 2012

a collaboration with Eden Lew, Janet Shim, and Linda Tsai

OBJECTIVE: Create visuals to show energy consumption and promote energy conservation for Carothers dormitory in the Quad Energy Challenge amongst the dorms in the honors quad.

Our group created a three-dimensional graph to show each floor’s energy consumption. The challenge in this project was to create a graph that kept a record, didn’t get too technical, and could be updated easily. To support the information in our graph, we also created a series of posters to be posted around the dorm in order to provide energy tips promote energy conservation. While working in this group, I was able to use my strengths in graphic design while supporting my teammates when they needed help in other areas.

THE QUAD ENERGY CHALLENGE

Our first plan was to use graphs on the sidewalk using chalk. However, about a week away from the launch date our plan was deined by the university. We quickly had to switch gears and create a 3D graph.

One of the best things that happened during the three weeks of competition was having the residents create their own promotions.

LINDSEY CULPEPPER // DESIGN SYSTEMS // SPRING 2013

OBJECTIVE: Create a series of limited components utilizing modularity in order to create a complex system.

I wanted to make a modular, interactive object that promoted play and creativity. After struggling with a concept, I decided to create a simple modular typeface as it could create interesting and unique shapes. The system also allows for the user to make letters or other iconographic compositions as well. While creating shapes for my typeface, I found that other interesting shapes could be made by allowing them to overlap. Creating a stamp set allowed the user to utilize transparency, easily create new and interesting compositions, and keep a record of what users have made.

HOW TO MAKE A

DECISION

Page 37: Design Portfolio

DAN OLSEN // ADVANCED ISSUES IN VISUAL SYNTAX // SPRING 2013

OBJECTIVE: Communicate a how-to process using a rational and idiosyncratic methodology.

I chose to develop a system showing how to make a decision because I personally tend to be indecisive and the decision making process is something people do everyday. I chose to make a mobile app as it allows for immediate user input and is easily accessible for everyday use. It also allowed for a step-by-step approach to presenting the order in which a user would make a decision

The rational app walks the user through the steps of making a decision and offers the option to include factors that would weigh into decision-making. The idiosyncratic app diverged from the first concept by illustrating what it’s like personally making a decision while walking someone through the process.

MEASURING WEATHER

Page 49: Design Portfolio

DAN OLSEN // ADVANCED ISSUES IN VISUAL SYNTAX // SPRING 2013

OBJECTIVE: Design a measuring device that is specific to one measuring task while challenging what a measuring device can be

After brainstorming measuring devices, I decided to measure the weather in a new way. When looking up the weather a user is presented with a variety of numbers and symbols that all mean different things, but they don’t relate to what we’re trying to do: dressing correctly for the weather. My measuring device is a website that shows what is appropriate to wear along with the current weather information. My goal is to provide someone with immediate information about what to wear but also teach what’s appropriate when this tool isn’t accessible. The most challenging part of this project was trying to make this website gender-neutral and non-specific without it becoming completely generic and lacking personality.
