Seriously congrats on being chosen to design for The Northerner. It is a serious position for the staff, and if you are dedicated the pay off is defi antly worth it all. Being a designer is more than just making a pretty paper for your staff. Its about consistancy, dedication, and being open minded. This guide will show you everything you need to know about being in this position and how to stay on top of your game.

It can be a tad bit stressful at times but seeing your work all over campus is such a reward. Working at the paper will prepare you for almost any job you can see yourself at in the future - so take this as a learning opportunity. This is a huge leadership role inside the student media department so consider yourself lucky, and in charge of making The Northerner look good.

Being in any position here at The Northerneris an important. Everyone needs each other to function properly. People are going to be looking to you for guidance and support because really you are the onlty one who knows what your doing in the design department. Communication both fast and incred-ibly reliable is intergral to being a succesfful designer at The Northerner. Here are some tips to keeping open communication as a major part on staff;

• Speak with writers and photographers throughout the week to see what ideas they have for visuals for upcoming issues. The sooner you know,the sooner it gets done.

• Check the budget to help bounce ideas for visuals. • Make sure and meet with your EIC every week to plan the issue and talk about visual opporutnites.

This can be done early on production night (Tuesday). • Check email throughout the week to stay ahead of the game on designs for advertising, and ect.• Be open and honest in your communication. If something isnt working or is not going to meet

deadline. Inform your EIC and help fi nd another solution. • Understand you have a 24/7 job, and it might mean quick turn arounds.

• All staff emails and contact information is shared on a document each semester with the whole staff. This can be found on google docs. This will help you contact other staff mem-bers outside of the offi ce.

• communication with the Advertising team is crucial. Ad’s is how we pay for our paper so getting designs done on time for advertisers is important and top priority.

Each week you are responsible for setting up the paper and making sure its prepared to design, pdf, and upload to the gannet system

so it can be printed and delivered. No pressure, but you need to do this every week and in a timely manner. Every Sunday you should

receive an email from the ads team about what is to be in the weeks paper for paid advertising and trades. Monday you will want to talk

with your EIC as soon as you can to plan how many pages you will have for the week and what goes on those pages. Under here you can

find a pretty good idea of what kind of schedule you will run.

Now that you know how many pages (but maybe not whats on them), you can schedule the print on our online service through gannet printing. The address for this is

printme.gannettpublishingservices.com.

Step two will have you put a section letter and # of pages to the schedule. We have the opportunity to do two sections of our news-paper. We will do this on the occasion of special sections like basketball, possible graduation, or other events such as those. But for a normal issue it is just Section A with however many pages you and the EIC decide on.

** When doing multiple sections your file names will change on the server as well as on your pdfs. this will be explained further later in thisguide.

design across the crease of the paper). Under this screen shot you will find the set color positions from our printer. A chart has been made - we can not change thse color positions without paying extra money. That is a decision left up the the EIC and Advisor.

Once you are done with setting color positions and come to a page that says waiting for pages you are good till you have to upload on tuesday / wednesday nights.

At The Northerner we have our own server space on campus so that we can store all of documents where they can be accessed by any-one with permission. To access the server on your computer just go to the finder window and click go > connect to server. Below shows our serveraddress and how to connect.

Because our printer is only a partner of Gannett they do not see the same information we put intot he gannett portal. So to keep the enquirer on the same status we send them an email each week as follows to show them the print details to prepare for:

If you do not have access to the server, please let our advisor know so that they might get you permission to access the space (ASAP). This is where we keep EVERYTHING.

This is the best view of the server though the system. You can see every folder that we hold and what is important(highlighted).

You are in charge of making each weeks folder as shown in the browser. You title the weeks folder as the date on which it publishes. After you have several weeks in the main folder you can move them to the archives, just go to the archives folder and find the semester folder ex. Fall 2013 or Spring 2014. If one does not exsist - then make one. Its best the keep the current three weeks in the main folder, the rest can be movedto archives.

Each week you will do the same thing - so you will never get confused.

Make a folder for the week in the main Northerner Folder. Inside that folder (just like the example) there will be an indivisual folder for all the elements. (Advertising, Incopy files, Indesign, PDF, and Photos). Inside the Incopy and Photos folder there are subfolders that will be later filled. These subfolders are shown above. These are the different sections within the paper. (Arts and Life, News, Sports, and Views).

*** You can copy the previous weeks folder as a quick cheat, but make you sure you clean out the folders and rename your indesign files correctly.

This is how your indesign files should be named each week. Example shown to the left. If you copy and past the previous weeks file make sure you clear off the pages and rename the files.

P R E PA R I N G PA G E S . . . .Once you have your new pages set (whether you copied last weeks and cleared them or made new ones) --you need to prepare your pages for the weeks publication. On the top of every page is a folio. This is where it states the date, section,

edition and issue, and page numbers. These can be found in your design libarary or already on the page

Top open your design library locate it in the server:

Even page folio. Should be at the top of the page inside the purple guides.

NOTE: Edition changes each semester -- Issue changes each week.

Odd page folio. Should be at the top of the page inside the purple guides.

Once you open it in InDesign it will look like whats on the

left. Here is where all the elements you will need are to de-

sign your pages. These are set things, they do not change.

But y0y are not limited to only these things. Know as a de-

signer you have creative license to do as you please as long as

it helps and not hurts the publication.

Now that you have your pages all blanked out - you can start designing when the issue has been planned out - usually EIC does this but you can assist if needed. Skeleton pages are set up on the server to help plan the issues. These can be found in the resources folder.

Once the skeleton has been passed out you can start placing things on pages and working your way to a finished product.

Like I said usually EIC does this but soon enough you will feel comfortable enough to jump in and help plan the issue. This is what a skeleton looks like. The dotted boxes are signifying the it is a colored page - darker boxes are for ads -- and other information like stories and such will just be typed in. We pass these our at the begining of production night so that everyone is literally on the same page about what goes where. It’s your responsibility to keep track of if anything changes and to make sure all night you are recording what is done and what isnt. I suggest using color markers - highlighters - or color pencils ro signify when something has been placed in InCopy, when its been ‘Desinged’, printed and Proofed, and then pdf and uploaded. Seems like a lot to remember, right? Thats why I keep it going with colors. You make a system for you that works but color coding worked best for me.

PA G E M A K I N G . . . .When working on a team - you will want to plan who is doing what pages and make sure they stay faithful to what they said they

will do. Hold each other accountable that is the way to get things done. You can do it I have faith.

When starting on your pages on production night -- its a slow start waiting for things to get put on InCopy and the server to be placed onto the pages but once the ball starts rolling its a fast paced fun and exciting night. Take your job seriously but know that fun is a major part of this job. I know you didn’t join just because you wanted to work on pages -- its because you wanted to learn the environment you wanted to be a part of the family. Well everyone welcomes you and we want it to be a learning experience as well as a positive social one.

The first few weeks you might need to work with a check list for each page to make sure you are getting everything on there. Once you get in the habit of doing it you can throw away the check list and go by natural instinct but heres what the basics are:

For each story there should always be:

- A Headline (Sometimes might have a subheading)

- A ‘By-Line’ or where the writers name goes. (This should always be lined up with the indent of the para-graph on the first line. You are not responsible for fill-ing this out - just put the general one from your design library).

Generally PAGES WILL HAVE:

- Anywhere from 1 to 3 stories. When stacking stories make sure the headline on top is at least 5 pts larger than the one of the bottom. Also when stacking stories never have the same number of columns on the top as on the bottom. It creates giant distracting rivers.

- Photos and graphics. These will have other elements within them and is detailed below. - Advertising - Advertising always gets placed on the outside of the page - for even number pages that left and for

odd pages that is right. -Fact boxes or info pullouts. These are created by you to break up the story and pull our information important to

the reader. Talk with your writers to get this information. The more visually pleasing the story is - the more people will red the whole newspaper.

With art you must always include a by-line

- and if necessary a caption. In your design library you can find all of these elements. To see how they fit into the page you can look at previous examples of the paper.

Reclassifying to Division I not only gives NKU the opportunity to be rec-ognized as a school and an athletic pro-gram, but is also a part of it’s growth, according to NKU Athletic Director Ken Bothof, as the program took on the top ranked basketball team in the country.

After losing to Purdue by one point in the season opener on Nov. 8, the Norse were defeated by the University of Kentucky, 93-63, at Rupp Arena on Nov. 10.

NKU and UK met previously in an exhibition game in 2004, which ended in a 91-73 loss for the Norse.

Nov. 10 was NKU’s fi rst time playing

UK in a regular season game.The Wildcats controlled the tip-off

and scored fi rst in the second minute of the fi rst half.

ON NKU’S GAME:NKU’s starting lineup included

transfer junior guard Jordan Jack-son, sophomore forward Jalen Billups, sophomore guard Tyler White, fresh-man guard Cole Murray and sopho-more guard Todd Johnson.

NKU stayed within eight points in the fi rst seven minutes of the game.

At the end of the half, NKU struggled to keep up with a score of 48-22.The Norse had 10 points in the paint and UK ended the half with 20.

NKU’s White led the Norse go-

ing into halftime with fi ve points. UK freshman forward Julius Randle scored 11 points in the fi rst half and sophomore forward Willie Cauley-Stein followed with seven.

Dave Bezold, head men’s basketball coach commented that the biggest rea-son NKU lost to UK was because of their ‘tremendous’ size.

“When I walked out on the fl oor and saw how big they were, I thought about turning around and going back in the locker room for a little bit,” Bezold said. “They are monsters.”

Billups scored the fi rst point of the second half, bringing the score 48-25. This was Billups’ second game since he was cleared for a heart issue three weeks before the season began.

White helped close the point gap af-ter the half began, bringing the score to 50-30 after scoring fi ve points within the fi rst four minutes.

“This is a whole different atmo-sphere,” White said. “I’ve never played in front of this many people. Kentucky loves their basketball… It was a great experience.”

Leaders for the Norse were Tyler White with 12 points, Jalen Billups with 9 points and 3 rebounds, Dan-iel Camps with 13 points, and Todd Johnson with 11 points and eight re-bounds.

ON UK’S GAME:UK’s starting lineup was composed of

freshman guard Andrew Harrison, fresh-man guard Aaron Harrison, freshman forward James Young, freshman forward Julius Randle and sophomore Willie Cau-ley-Stein.

Kentucky ended the game with an 11-3 record when playing against teams in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

In the fi rst half, UK scored four points early and never trailed during the entire game. The team then had a 13-0 run which made the score 29-10. The Wildcats led by double digits the rest of the game.

Randle had a double-double in the fi rst half with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Norse only hit 25 percent of their three pointers against UK, making nine of 35.

“They didn’t make their threes today,” Calipari said. “Against Purdue they were 13 of 26. So we hit them on a good night.”

UK had only seven turnovers during the entire game. NKU fi nished the half with 15 turnovers and had 22 total.

Randle ended the game as leading scor-er with 22 points and 14 rebounds, Aaron had 16 points and his brother Andrew fi nished with 13. Cauley-Stein ended the game with 11 rebounds.

On the menu bar of Indesign -- There is the fi le drop sub-menu. Within this is the option to place. A shortcut for this action is cMd+d BELOW IS HOW YOU SHOULD FIND YOUR STORIES/PHOTOS/ECT FOR CONTENT PLACEeverything is organized and named so that you can place without having to play hide n’ seek.

Sometimes photos are too big for the frame made such as the following example AObviously you cannot see the whole image because it is too large for the frame.. Using your white ar-row option ( found on the toolbar on the left) you can select the image and not the frame and see the complete size and how it is in ratio to the frame. See example B.

In order to resize your photo without making it a hot mess!! follow this:Use the button at the top of your screen - only shown when you select the image (using white arrow or double click frame when in black mouse). REAd BELOW fOR BUTTOn InfO:

• Select the photo box option (as highlighted) on your left toolbar.

• find content using the above steps of ‘placing content’• As you select your image> push open.• Your image selection will show like so:

• Proceed to drop it in the document by simply clicking any spot on the page.

• You will notice that the image may/may not be gIgAnTIc if that is the case you can simply (using your black arrow) select it > pull the corner in while holding SHIfT on your keyboard to correctly resize the image.

After selecting the story you would like to place (example to the left). You must then select open to place the story on the page. When you open the story you will have a sign in screen come up - type in your name and push check out.

Now that the story has been checked out it will look like this:

• Select all your text by double clicking the text box center or by selecting the box and pressing cmd+a on your keypad.• When all text is highlighted you will want to use the following format to make your copy text the right style:

• When you change these settings and your whole paragraph has been selected the change will occur across the content box.

• now your body copy is ready to be placed into columns.

Georgia is our body copy/ story font 9 pt is our size of text.

This is our paragraph style. Just like the icon selected, our paragraphs will be justifi ed with last line aligned left.

10 pt is our leading.. leading means space between the lines.

Because you do not indent in InCopy we make the indent happen here. Use this setting.

PLACING STORIES CONT.

Select all your copy after it has been formatted correctly and look for the following buttons in the top tool bar to make your paragraph setting easier.

These settings make our paragraphs look more like B than A - Which is more desirable to fi ll space and to read....

Column set-

This setting is how many columns, in order to set this you must have the text box selected.

This balances our columns so that we have mostly even ones and it makes it easy to read.

This helps make the lines justifi ed vertically.

To resize text boxes all you have to do is grab a corner and resize using the black mouse arrow.

Your library will look very similar to this image to the left. This is where you will fi nd all drag and drop resources you will need like your BY-LINE.

within your library fi nd your By-line and grab the box and drag it to your page. it should show up like this: (already formatted)

Here you will simply place the BY-Line at the front of the story lining the left side to the indent and the right side drag to meet the end of the fi rst column, like so:

Most of our images will have cutline this is so everyone can know who the photo is by and what is going on in the photo. The task of putting it all together is easy and can be done quickly as follows:

GROUPING FOR IMAGES WITH CUTLINES

>THIS IS wHAT wE AIM fOR • Place photo in (refer to placing photo tab)

• Then drag from your library the following items: ‘photo by’ and ‘photo caption’.The library is alphabetical so they should be next to one another.

• Pair these up with the photo by aligning them by width together.

select all objects and align them using the right align tool.

resize the caption box to fi t un-der the photo and resize the line in the photo by to do the same

nOW group them by selecting them all and hitting cmd+g on your keyboard. now they can be placed into the copy.

now select your grouped item and here they will be using the text wrap option of ‘wrap around object shape’ (The one with a circle) and an offset of 0.125in (Type it in the boxes).... Once this change has been made when you put your grouped item near text the text will obey this wrap command.

If you know InDesign pretty well, after a few weeks of production everything will become second nature to you. Its all about repetition. Its not a hard job if you remember how to do things. Please refer to any of the instructions in the previous pages at any time. Even I had to google things during my time as the design editor. It’s okay when you don’t know something -- just means your human. I promise once you get the hang of it - its as easy as getting in here and Georgia 9/10 :)

The process of page making is repetitive just like the rest of this gig - make the page, pass it off to the editors, print and proof, finalize changes, PDF the sucker and then upload it. below will show you how to PDF your stuff and upload it to gannet system.

its a really simple process just like shown on the right. File > Adobe PDF presets > PDF/X-1a:2001....

Once you push this you will need to make sure the name is the same as the file name and in the code that was shown earlier

its important our files stay the right style like this for upload.

*** ALSO MAKE SURE IT IS SAVED IN THE CORRECT PDF FOLDER IN THE CORRECT WEEK.

All of your files at the end should look like this.

Keeping your files seperated is important - making sure theyre named right and in the right folder even more important. when you are pressed for time you cant be playing hide and seek with files. Save them right the first time for less confusion.

The files named the actual dates is a collection file of all pdfs together.

In order to make digital copies of our paper we must save one pdf of all the pages in one. Make a mass document of the right size with appropriate page number for the weeks issue and drop each pdf into the pages and pdf the whole thing and save it as the date. This will be used later to upload to ISSUU.COM and put onto our website.

P D f U P L O A D O N G A N N E T T. . .Log back into the Gannet portal to upload the pages to our printer. Here is some screen shots to help you:

On the submit page you will see a list of pages with the upload button next to it. This is pretty self explanatory upload the pages.

Once the page has been uploaded it will show up green and show the PDF document name as the file name.

Once that is done push submit and the proofing page will come up like this. You will have to wait for the page to preflight and proof to be converted to the right color mode and such. When it does it will look like the right image. A small mini version will appear and you click it to open and accept the proof.

It will show up really large and you can zoom out to check for issues but once your down just push accept and close the page and it will show up in the mini icon preview as accepted.

With our news team trying to get digital first we are working to stay current with our website. A part of this we upload digital versions of our paper to our website so people can view it there as a full publication. For this we use the service of ISSUU.COM.

The username is thenortherner and password is northerneronce logged in push the upload button to put the newest issue up.

When you are done with uploading all the PDF’s to the gannett site- you will need to call the EOP to notify them that you are done.

IF YOU ARE EVER LATE YOU NEED TO CALL EOP AHEAD OF TIME AND TELL THEM YOU ARE RUNNING BEHIND. IT WILL COST US MONEY IF WE ARE TOO LATE. TRY AND BE TIMELY AND NO MORE THAN 10 MINUTE OVER TIME. OUR DEADLINE IS 8:00 PM ON WEDNESDAY

with the Cincinnati enquirer. Just wanted you to know that we have finished uploading

OBVIOUSLY go ahead and select the weeks pdf with all of the pages together. When its done it will be like below. Fill out the information like so

and then finish it.

when its all said and done you will have to click my publications at the top and a whole gallery of Northerners will appear - click your most recent upload for

embedding options for the website. Currently I do the embedding but next semester our web editor will be in charge of this. Just make sure that it gets uploaded to issuu and let the web editor know when you are done so they can finish the process.

Student publication is always changing, always trying to keep up with current trends and such. It’s okay to experiment, to change, to try new things. It’s the point to do it now while you have the chance. Look at the history of the our paper and see how far we have come? Just in the matter of a few years our design has changed dramatically. This is a sign that things always get better regardless who steps in. Just do your best and know that there is always room to grow. Push yourself to do a better paper than the last one and accept sometimes you will fail and other times you will fly. Enjoy your job here and know that it was the best memories of NKU that I have. Because of this paper I fell more in love with design and found my thrill for life. Sounds silly that a student publication can make you feel so empowered, but seeing your hard work in hard copy with your name printed in it -- well thats the best damn feeling I have ever had. I will miss this paper more than anything in the world. Please treat it well and put your best forward -- not for me but for the future of the paper.
