• "Square groove" welds are made by butting twosections witl1 a gap if necessary to aid weldpenetration -
• The maximum thickness depends on thewelding process:- from 4 mm with GTAW to about 15 mm with SAW

• When both sides of the joint are accessible- a sealing pass can be deposited on the reverse side after
surface preparation -- A metal backing strip can be fitted across the bottom of the
groo\le to support the weld pool during welding- A remm/able flux or non-fused backing may be used
• When the joint is accessible from one side only- Satisfactory penetration and root profile must be obtained as
weldE!d- Accurate joint preparation and fit-up is necessary- GTAW is often used for root pass because it permits good
control of joint fusion
