Desert Pines High School’s Core Values

Jaguars are LOYAL through and through. We express our loyalty to our school, community, family, friends and, above all, ourselves with all that we do and all that we say. We stand up for what we believe in and celebrate our individuality. We support one another through thick and thin despite differences we may have. We are dependable and committed to ourselves and those in our lives. We stay loyal to our past traditions while being true to our future aspirations.

Jaguars show DETERMINATION in all that we do. We stay true to our dreams and aspirations, knowing that at times our character will be tested. We understand that strength and willpower in the face of adversity will help make us into the best version of ourselves. We believe in our potential and do not give critics the power to speak our truth. We set goals, self-reflect, and alter our paths as needed in order to achieve!

Jaguars have a strong sense of COMMUNITY pride. We accept others for who they are and the unique value they bring to the DP family. We take pride in our surroundings and do what we can to

make our community a better place. We are active, involved, and committed to working together to promote the positive while finding solutions to overcome challenges. We take responsibility for ensuring the needs of the greater good are heard and hold each other accountable. We are proud of where we come from!

Jaguars always convey KINDNESS. We give and receive help freely. We show compassion and respect without reservation. We accept help with gratitude, because we know we are stronger together. We treat others the way we want to be treated and, even when it is difficult, we stand up for what is right. We are kind in all that we think, say, and do.

Jaguars always strive to PERSERVERE for success. We push through difficult times, knowing it will make us stronger in the end. When we are struggling, we understand that rock-bottom is a great foundation to build and grow upon. We make the best of challenges, using them as stepping stones to reach our goals. We remain hopeful and optimistic regardless of the circumstances. We are the makers of our own destiny and do not let outside influences deter us from accomplishing our dreams. Jaguars strive to be HONEST in all that we do. We take responsibility for our own thoughts, words, and actions, remaining truthful through difficult times. We aspire to do the right thing even when no one is watching. We take ownership for our mistakes and know they do not define our future. We are truthful to ourselves and others even if tempted not to be. We know honesty will only help improve our relationships with others and create a strong sense of self. Jaguars seek personal GROWTH through self-advocacy. We create high expectations for ourselves and reflect often to ensure we are on the path to achieve our goals. We strive every day to become productive members of our global society. We lead by example. When told ‘no,’ we do not give up but rather we find alternate routes to achieve success. We avoid excuses and produce results. We are DP, YOU KNOW!

Mission Statement New item for 2019

The mission of the Desert Pines High School community is to embrace and live true to our core values inspiring our students and staff to become the best version of themselves.

Vision Statement

The Vision of Desert Pines High School is to engage all stakeholders to invest in the belief statements with an overall goal to increase the number of students attending classes thereby increasing their credit sufficiency.

Clark County School District (CCSD) Belief Statement

We believe that five qualities of moral character are fundamental to human conduct: INTEGRITY, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, COURAGE, and JUSTICE. The other important character traits build on and gain strength from these. Therefore, these five must be studied, exemplified, praised, and developed, not only in students, but also among staff, in school and out, by all of us.

II. General Information and Policies

Arrival and Departure Times Many students arrive on campus before they have scheduled classes and remain after scheduled classes are completed. Desert Pines High School cannot be responsible for students on campus outside of regular school hours who are not assigned to a specific class or activity under the direction of authorized personnel. Therefore, students who are not participating in scheduled school related activities should not loiter on campus.

Bicycles and Motor Scooters The parking areas for bicycles and mopeds are located near the home ticket booth at Jaguar Stadium and outside of the gym entrance. All students riding bicycles and mopeds must use these areas. Any bicycles or mopeds parked in other areas will be removed. It is strongly recommended that students bring their own bicycle locks because these areas cannot be supervised. Students riding mopeds need to insure that they have the proper license, do not ride on sidewalks or landscaped areas, and do not exceed speed limits on or around school grounds. Desert Pines High School and the Clark County School District will not assume responsibility for the security of bicycles and mopeds. The bicycle area will not be opened during the school day. Students leaving school per emergency request by parent must obtain the assistance of a campus monitor to unlock the bike area.

Bus Transportation Bus service is provided for students who live over two miles from the Desert Pines High School campus. CCSD Transportation is responsible for the establishment of routes and communication with parents regarding pick-up and drop-off sites and times. Students are expected to follow all rules and cooperate with bus drivers in order to ensure safe transportation to and from school. Students failing to comply with these rules may lose their bus riding privileges. Buses drop off and pick up students in the parking lot west of the school.

Cell Phone Usage Students are not permitted to use cell phones in classrooms or hallways during class time. Students found using their cell phone/text messaging during unauthorized times will have their cell phones confiscated. If a student refuses to give his/her cell phone to a school representative, the student will face disciplinary consequences for insubordinate behavior. If a student is found using a cell phone, text messaging, during a school-wide crisis, or during standard security procedures, such as, fire drills or a shelter-in-place drills, they will have their cell phones confiscated and may face suspension from the school.

Closed Campus—Leaving Campus Without Permission Desert Pines High School is a closed campus. Students are expected to remain on campus at all times during the school day, including, during the lunch period. Corridor Passes A student is required to have a valid corridor pass at any time he/she is in the hallway after the tardy bell rings. The passes must be issued by a teacher indicating the student’s name, a specific time, and destination for the student. Students without passes will be sent back to class and may be subject to other school disciplinary action. Student aides must visibly display their badges, which are valid only during the period the student is actually an aide. Abuse of the aide badge could result in an immediate class change and possible loss of credit.

Bathroom Passes New item for 2019 Bathroom passes are color-coded at Desert Pines High School. Bathrooms are assigned as either the Blue Bathroom, Purple Bathroom, or Yellow Bathroom with large bathroom passes that match the color of the Bathroom. Students are to stay in the zone that their bathroom pass is assigned. Purple Bathroom Pass: 200s, 300s, Portables 1-7 Blue Bathroom Pass: 800s, 900s, TLC Yellow Bathroom Pass: 500s, 400s, 600s, Portables 18-25.

Courtesy Toward Guests and the School Community All students are expected to treat adults, authority figures, and other students with respect and courtesy for the purpose of maintaining a positive environment, which is conducive to learning.

Eating Areas The cafeteria is the only designated eating area. In an effort to keep our campus clean, we respectfully ask for your assistance. No food or drink is to be taken into corridors or the classrooms. Every student is expected to pick-up after one’s self. The leaving of trash in the eating areas or quad will not be tolerated. Failure to pick up after one’s self may result in disciplinary action.

Expected Behavior at Assemblies Student attendance is mandatory at assemblies. While in the assembly students will respect the participants. Once an assembly starts, no students will be allowed to enter or leave the gym. Student Council spends many hours preparing an assembly for fellow students. Therefore, no booing or other signs of disrespect will be tolerated. Loitering in the parking lots, in hallways, or other places on campus is not permitted. Please note: buses will arrive and depart at their regular times on assembly days.

Emergency Information Fire Drills The signal for these drills is a shrill intermittent sound. When activated, students are to follow the directions of the teacher and practice the OODA Loop. OODA stands for Observe–Orient– Decide–Act. Once teachers lead students out of the building, students are reminded that all roadways must be kept clear. No re-entry into the building is allowed until the all-clear signal is given.

Shelter-in-Place Drills A shelter-in-place drill is announced by the principal/designee over the intercom and all students are to remain inside the building; classes outside (PE) must immediately return to the building when the drill is announced. These drills are practiced to prepare for the event when a timely means of evacuation is not available. An all-clear signal or message will be given when the drill has been completed.

Facial Piercings Facial piercings are not permitted on campus. If a student is found wearing a facial piercing it will be confiscated, and a parent will need to retrieve the piercing from the Deans’ Office. If a student is a habitual offender of this rule, progressive discipline will be implemented.

Fees Special fees are assigned for projects or materials that students take home for their own use. Fees are charged in art, family consumer science classes, and other fine art related courses. Fees are to be paid at the school bank at the beginning of the semester.

Forwarding of School Transcripts No transcripts will be forwarded when withdrawn. All transcripts MUST be requested online at transcripts.ccsd.net. Only students who are currently enrolled can submit an official request through the Registrar’s Office.

Health/FASA Office The Health Office is located in the Main Office. Students must have a pass from their teacher before reporting to the Health Office. If medication (prescription or non-prescription) is to be administered during school hours, the student is to obtain a legal medication release form from the Health Office. This form is to be completed by the parent and returned along with the medication. The Health Office does not stock or dispense any form of medication.

Lockers/Locker Searches – District Policy 5144 All books and personal belongings are to be kept in a neat and orderly manner. Any person caught tampering, opening, or removing items from a locker to which they are not assigned will face strong disciplinary action. Through the direction of the Attorney General of the State of Nevada, school districts have been informed that school lockers must remain the property of the school. The School authorities are responsible for lockers and have the right to examine the contents of those lockers for reasons of health, safety, and security. Schedule Change Policy The master schedule of classes is the end result of months of planning, student/parent opportunities for guidance, student pre-registration information, and staffing. As a consequence of this extensive planning, schedule changes will not be made after registration other than to address graduation requirements.

Due to the requirement for the number of hours needed to earn credit prescribed by the Nevada State Department of Education, no student may change or withdraw from a class after 15 days of enrollment in the semester. Students who withdraw from a class after the 15-day limit will receive an “F” on the semester transcript as part of their permanent record. Students will be expected to remain in year-long courses for the entire school year.

IV. Attendance Enforcement

Attendance enforcement is a shared responsibility. The parent, legal guardian, or other person having control or charge of any student shall be required to send the student to school during all times that the public school is in session.

Attendance Process Each classroom teacher will keep record of any student who is absent from his/her class each day. The teacher’s record book is the official legal accounting document for each student’s attendance. Students accumulating eleven or more unexcused absences in a class will not receive credit in that course. Parents may appeal to the Attendance Office Administrator. Absences accumulated for the following reasons will not be included in the absence total:

1. Participation in a school-sanctioned activity. 2. Absences due to discipline reasons like, RPC, and/or out-of-school suspension SUS.

Excused/Unexcused Absences The parent/guardian must confirm by note the reason for absence prior to or upon return from each absence. The written confirmation must be presented within three days directly following the absence. Excused (approved) and unexcused (unapproved) absences are counted in the total number of absences for purposes of attendance enforcement. The Nevada Revised Statutes define an unexcused (unapproved/UNV) absence as an absence which:

1. Was not approved in writing in advance; 2. Was not due to the physical or mental inability of the student to attend

school or due to an emergency; and 3. The parent/guardian or person in charge of the student failed to notify the school of the

student’s inability to attend school within three days after the student’s return to school. (NRS 392.130)
