State of the Grass Greetings Bluegrass Aficionados: And so, like the sparrows of Capistrano, our beloved snowbirds, college students, and assorted wanderers return to the beautiful Southwest to once again infuse the Old Pueblo with greater color and vibrancy. Like cool water to a thirsty man, the hardy de- sert dwellers who stayed behind and endured a fiery summer greet them with open arms. And, of course, they bring with them all things bluegrass. Can you believe that our 12 th Annual Tucson Bluegrass Festival is almost upon us! Once again, Mike Headrick and the festival committee have faithfully dedicated them- selves to putting together an exciting lineup of performers that will have something for everyone. This in- cludes the popular Friday night band contest (free for the public), performances by Blue Highway, Steve Smith & Hard Road, Kickin Grass, Whistle Stop, Copper River, Titan Valley Warheads, Crucial Country, Jam Pak, Dusty River Boys, Manzanita Bluegrass, and Rincon Mountain Boys. There will also be instru- ment instruction, pick’n in the parking lot, and a variety of food and craft vendors. This will be our second year to return to the AVA center – a venue without equal. Mike Headrick, Geoff Fox, and Jack Arnold have done yeoman’s labor. A special ‘shout- out’ to Jim Sanchez and Dave Polson. Jim has initiated con- tact with numerous businesses and brought in remarkable business support this year. Dave has once again coordinated with a variety of vendors to ensure for great eating and shopping opportunities while folks lis- ten to live bluegrass. Make sure to mark your calendar for October 28 th – 30 th . Keep in mind there’s all kinds of happenings throughout the month. “Doc” Reifschneider has been ex- panding performances on 4 th Ave. James Sanchez has been working to create jam opportunities on the northwest side. The Bluegrass Workshop on Monday nights continues to go gangbusters. We now have Brian Davies and Evan Dain volunteering once a month to provide bass instruction. Plus, we have begun posting instructional materials at www.desertbluegrass.org so that students can print off various resources and songs. Speaking of our website, be sure to click on the calendar to track events at Udall Park, Thirsty’s, Rincon Market, 4 th Avenue, Pinnacle Peak, Emeritus Retirement Home, TMC’s Children’s Dia- mond Center, and 17 th Street Market (including free Saturday instrument workshops). During the months of October and November, pickers are invited to come early on Monday nights (5:45 pm) to the Bluegrass Workshop to practice Christmas Songs. In December we will be playing a mix of Christmas carols and bluegrass standards at Luminaria Nights (Tucson Botanical Gardens), UMC’s Chil- dren’s Center, the Ronald McDonald House, and Emeritus retirement home. Tucson’s 12th Annual Desert Bluegrass Festival

Presented by the Desert Bluegrass Association

Hi folks,

Fall is here, at least according to the calendar, and our 12th Annual festival is just around the corner. Mark your calendar now – October 28, 29 & 30 at AVA

Amphitheater. The weather should be perfect by then. Your festival committee has been hard at work and is very busy getting everything ready. You can help by volunteering – see Jack Arnold’s call for volunteers in this newsletter.

I am pleased to announce that we have some new sponsors for the festival. In addition to THE FOLK SHOP and Brooke Miner, MR K’S BBQ, ROADRUNNER

LOCK and FREEDOM RV have become sponsors. Please support our sponsors as they are supporting us.

We also have five FESTIVAL PATRONS so far: Jim Sanchez, Geoff Fox, Bonnie &

Jim Lohman, Jim Click Automotive Group, Eisenhuth Insurance Agency and Mike & Betty Headrick. You too may become a Patron with a $100 contribution and you get 10 guest tickets to the Saturday evening show to share with friends and family. Contact me for details.

So the work will soon be behind us and we will have a weekend of GREAT bluegrass music in front of us. The bands (listed on our flyer) include fantastic national bands, great regional bands and wonderful local talent. The Friday night band contest is always a highlight. Five bands have already signed-up but there is still time for you to enter your band. (Details are on our website.) The workshops will be taught by some of the best performers in the business. What a great place to learn a few new licks. There will be great vendors to check out and some great food to sample. Should be lots of good jamming in the camping area and the camping is FREE. Make sure to bring your DBA membership card because that gets you up to two $5 discounts on weekend passes.

So tune up your instruments, get your camping gear packed and get ready for a great weekend.

Mike Headrick

A Bluegrass Band

You have to have a banjo

To get that Bluegrass sound

The bass is a necessity

To nail the rhythm down

When the fiddler plays a lead

It shoots tingles up your spine

A guitar helps to keep the beat

Or pick the melody line

The Mandolin’s offbeat chop

Makes the Bluegrass whole

Greater than the sum of the parts

This music's solid gold

Dale Ann Bradley "Somewhere South of Crazy" Compass Records Group www.compassrecords.com review by Marilyn Ryan Hulbert

Three time winner of the IBMA Award for Female vocalist of the year - 2007, 2008, 2009! Dale Ann Bradley is forever a bluegrass darling! In this album we find 3 songs written by Dale Ann. She is not only a talented interpreter of traditional music, contemporary bluegrass music, a bit of old rock n roll, but also a writer of beautiful songs. "Somewhere South of Crazy" (written by Dale Ann)- Steve Gully and Pam Tillis sing harmony, Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Sierra Hull playing the mandolin, Andy Hall on dobro, Alison Brown playing Banjo, and Mike Bub keeping it all together on bass. "Round and Round" - Dale Ann wrote this one too - Kim Fox sings harmony along with Steve Gully. Stuart Duncan makes the fiddly cry. "Summer Breeze" Seals and Crofts - I danced to this song every morning in the 70's - we played the record until we just about wore it out. Beautiful rendition by Dale Ann on this album! "Come Home Good Boy" A Sarah Pirkle song - a timely and heart rending song about a young boy sent to war. "In Despair" bluegrass! Matt Combs on fiddle. David Long on mandolin. Banjo played Mike Summer. Dale Ann has the energy and pipes to sing the fast ones with the kick they require and still keep her smoothe angelic vocal quality. "Restoring the Love" a Steve Gulley song. Sweet sentiments about being a good man! "New Shoes" - I've made my reservation for my final destination, I'm changing my location to my mansion in the sky - walking around in new shoes - getting ready to move. Gorgeous one! "Leaving Kentucky" - another Dale Ann Bradley song, written with Jeff White and Kim Fox. "Next to Nothing" - written by Russell Dale Johnson. Fast bluegrass - just like I like!!! "Will You Visit me on Sundays" - Steve Gulley begins this heartbreaker - amazing duet with Dale Ann. "I Pressed Though the Crowd" - a beautiful gospel song in three quarter time. "Old Southern Porches" - One of Dale Ann's best from years ago, recorded live at Grass Valley, California 2007. I know some of you have met Dale Ann, and lots of you have seen and heard her at the Tucson Bluegrass Festival or other festivals across the country. She is about the loveliest person you can shake and howdy with. Her talent is boundless. She is a soulful angel. The announcer at Grass Valley says it all when he tells the audience "If this doesn't turn you on, you ain't got no switches! See you all in November - meanwhile pick one for me! Marilyn
