Skilful Use of Pharmacy‐Only‐Medicines & Over‐the‐counter Medications for Common
Skin Conditions
Pharmacists are often approached directly and consulted by patients on various skin conditions. While some skin conditions require physician consultation for management, milder conditions such as skin dryness, may be managed by one of the several moisturizers that are available over‐the‐counter (OTC). This talk aims to better refine the pharmacists’ skillful use of OTC and Pharmacy‐only medications to manage minor medical dermatoses, as well as to discern when is a dermatose serious enough to warrant a referral for medical examination by a physician. Dr Derrick Aw Chen Wee
Director and Consultant Dermatologist,
National University Hospital
Dr Derrick Aw is a consultant dermatologist and registered acupuncturist in the National University Hospital, Singapore. He is also the director of the university dermatology clinic, and outpatient clinical director of the university medicine cluster. His subspecialty interests are acne, psoriasis, eczema, urticaria, dermatological lasers for medical and cosmetic uses, minimally‐invasive dermatological aesthetic procedures, cosmeceuticals and hospital dermatology. He is highly involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education as a clinical lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He is frequently invited to lecture for medical students, family physicians, pharmacists, residents, promoters, and the public; and is a regular contributor to local mass media queries on dermatological problems. He has written two educational books on clinical medicine (Look and Proceed, Armour 2002) and clinical dermatology (Dermatology Picture MCQs, Armour 2005). He sits in the Advanced Specialty Training committee for dermatology, and is a reviewer for many medical journals. He is currently involved in several clinical research projects.
