Derelict Furniture is an upcycle furniture design brand with a unique approach.

Pioneered by two designers and interior architects, Tõnis Kalve and Ahti Grünberg, Derelict creates unusual and original furniture from wood recovered from industrial scrap, historic woodpiles and exciting abandoned sheds.

Furthermore, each item of furniture has its own story to tell. Made of wood from an old camper’s house in the deep Baltic forests or the decaying 1920’s Tallinn Hippodrome - every piece created is catchy and meaningful.

Derelict is green, creative and truly modern.

Ahti Grünberg

was born in Rõuge, Estonia, in 1974. He is a graduate of the Estonian Academy of Arts interior architecture and furniture design department. Ahti has worked for several renowned Estonian architecture and interior architecture offices. Office interior designed by Ahti and his partners won the Estonian Interior Architects Association annual award for “The Best Public Interior 2010”. Public space and furniture are his two favourite themes.

Tõnis Kalve

was born in Tallinn, Estonia, in 1983. He graduated from Estonian Academy of Arts furniture design and interior architecture speciality in 2009. Tõnis has worked as an interior architect and has been behind the birth of a number of well-known Tallinn interiors. Tõnis in cooperation with the VLS architects won the Estonian Interior Architects Association annual award for “The Best Public Interior 2012”.

50/60 is simply a 110% chair

which dimensions and angles follow every

anthropometrical indicators of human

being. Frame consists out of Derelicted

wood and industry production waste which

have been treated and finished for a new

look. Amorphous seat has been molded out

of PVC sheet.

VO^KR°is a modular cupboard

system made out of furniture industry

production waste. The cupboard system

consists of two different module sizes. It’s

symmetrical construction enables to be

arranged in outrageous number of

combinations. Pixel contains of two size

shelving moduls with or without doors and

drawers. The body of the Pixel moduls

are made out of plywood. Doors and

drawers are available in OSB or painted

MDF and the steel frame is available in

RAL color to make for an individual design.

chopsticks As Chinese have

said many centuries ago - Chopsticks

modular shelving system works as an

enldess matrix system with no beginning or

end. Two different size wooden sticks are

connected to a special steel component to

create a system that offers many different

options for use, such as a shelf, sidetable

or an architonic structure. It can be a room

devider for your home or public space. The

steel connector is available in RAL colour to

make for an individual design.


Derelicted wood can be collected from many intriguing places.

One of the materials comes from a decaying cafeteria terrace of the 1920’s Tallinn Hippodrome. The only hippodrome in the Baltic States bloomed before the Second World War when crowds of up to 7000 would attend horse races there. Even patients from an adjacent mental institution were sometimes allowed for a day at the races, although bet-ting and restaurants were off their limits. It was a venue for large agri-cultural exhibitions during the Soviet occupation, and has been largely abandoned since the 1990s.

Derelict pieces could also be made out of exclusive material collected from a restricted Czarist-era military building on a distant Baltic coast or a time-worn camping shed which used to shelter nature explorers in Estonia’s primeval Soomaa swampland. All those different stories just keep on coming to us.

All plywood pieces are made out of special limited-edition plywood packaging from Russia which speaks loudly of its travels. There are ad-dresses and measures of the content on every plywood piece, unhiding its past journeys.

Each unique client of Derelict will get a special number connected to the piece they acquired to find out which story his or her Derelict product carries.
