GUATEMALARETALHULEU

The project DAR - District of High Performance is a care center that strives at a high-level of standards

to care and educate orphans, abused and of extreme poverty children who live in high risk of being recruit-ed by delinquents, drug dealers and gangs in their areas of influence.

We have a training center for families and commu-nity leaders so they can be eligible for a better future through learning and implementing principles and values of life but above all based on the teaching of God’s word.

We recently have been approved by the Board of Education as an Educational Center for children in extreme poverty, this certification recognizes us as a program that educates, nurtures, and provides health care. We provide our 170 students, breakfast and lunch plus a morning and an afternoon snack. We now have

eight classrooms where regular classes are held during the morning schedule and during the afternoon extracurricular classes, (sewing, arts & crafts, music, drama and dancing) taught from kindergarten through sixth grade.

DAR is located in Canton Ocosito in the City of Retal-huleu; as we strive for excellence in our educational process, teach and learn, we work under the constructivism method that allows students to learn as they do. Our goal is to complete the process by implementing different classes and care benefits in order to complete a child’s wellbeing.

We are convinced that the access to advance is learn-ing, is teaching prevention as we care for each individual for health (their dental health), as part of our routine scheduled through classes and visits with a dentist to achieve our goals as part of the integrated plan in education and health care and dental care for our boys and girls at DAR and its community members.

Our plan is to complete our dental clinic and teach each class at their grade level the appropriate health care and prevention care program suggested

In Guatemala the general health of the population is in a very precarious situation, in which the indicators reflect the health issues of the population of the extreme poverty sections of society, are truly alarming. The rural area where the highest percentage indigenous and other social groups are affected by:

-lack of odontology staff-concentration of qualified human resources in the capital city and provincial capitals-low level of educational and socio-economic status in the community

Malocclusions as dental caries and periodontal diseases affect a large segment of the world population and there-fore our country, thereby constituting a serious health problem, representing the 2nd public health problem after oral cavities.

We propose to attack the problem by giving a solution to the community we are impacting.

Implementing a dental care clinic in our facility where students of our school and members of the community will have the necessary dental and oral care.

We have been able to begin the construction of our dental clinic by our own means, accomplishing 75% of its construction, but do not have the equipment and supplies needed in the clinic. Nevertheless we cannot be up and running as a dental clinic because we are still missing several items mentioned as installing a dental chair, finish furnishing and equipping the clinic and workshops for the teachers. Detailed in phase 1.

We are convinced that implementing the dental clinic at our facilities will be an important acquisition and impact our students, family members and the members of the

community to improve dental and oral health as they progress in their total and integrated healthcare.

We fulfill our goals through education but knowing that health will also be attended solving dental health issues and educating our boys and girl in our center as well as the community on how we should care and prevent dental recurrent.
