Salve Regina University
Salve Regina was chartered by the State of Rhode Island in 1934. Founded under the sponsorship of the Sisters of Mercy, Salve Regina was established as an independent
institution in the Catholic tradition of education, providing higher education to women and men.
The university is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc.
through its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education.
Xythos @ Salve Regina
• Early vision & intent for use– Eliminating network share drives for students– Secure web-file storage solution– Setting quotas (350MB)– “Access your files from anywhere you are”– Integration with Active Directory SSO– WebDAV compatible
• Xythos WebFile Server becomes MyDATA• Success in moderation (Phase I)
MyDATA
• Accessible via MySALVE institutional portal. • Customized styles and pages for institutional
branding.
Phase 1 - Early Adopters
• Early faculty use and acceptance– On-site Training and Lunch Hour sessions– Encourage sharing and gathering
• Internal business use– Versioning and office file management
• Creative sparks fly – ICM academic program use on Mac’s and PC’s
Phase 2 - Integration
• Publishing for everyone– Library web sites for instruction
• Index file links course with instructor selected e-reserves
• Campus-wide e-reserve web site posted for use by authorized campus account holders
– Integrated Learning Portfolio• Lifelong learning ePortfolio project
(http://eportfolio.salve.edu)
Project: IL e-Portfolio
• Fall 2006 release of IL ePortfolio presented a number of challenges:
– Xythos Professional Services provided updates and customized campus software
– 600 students receive hands-on instruction on how and why to use MyDATA
Behind the Scenes
• Each student upon first logon to MyDATA has an ePortfolio folder pre-configured for use
• This folder is a publicly accessible “ePortfolio” folder set to Read Only
• Each user is allocated space to store backup files, share documents, and present portfolio web pages
How Does It Work?
Publishing access to individual portfolios is provided through a ‘wired’ customized installation of Macromedia Contribute and the individual’s Active Directory logon via WebDAV.
“Collected” files are published onto MyDATA folders. All published content is backed up on SAN
URL’s are made accessible to the public by the individual.
Samples
• Year 1 New Student Seminar– Produced on HP Laptops using Adobe
Contribute 3
Project: EDCfolio
• Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards
• Sophomore & Junior portfolio– Produced and posted using Adobe
Contribute 3– MyData is one of the critical parts of the
EDC-folio process. It allows the student to collect and store all of the evidences required in the seven prompts that must be answered and demonstrated as well.
Project: EDCfolio (cntd.)
“I really like using MyData [Xythos]. It has help me reach students. They ask fewer questions about how things have been organized or what they have to do and get to concentrate on what is being taught. It has really helped some of them keep themselves organized for the first time, especially when studying for a test. No more losing assignments and if they are sick they have access to my lecture for that day.”
Project: ICM Portfolio
• First year student use
• Senior portfolio– Produced and posted using Adobe
and MAC tools

What Next?
• 24/7 Access regardless of connectivity(Xythos Drive)
• Better use of sharing and versioning of portfolio content (Faculty review of artifacts before acceptance)
• Open integration with course management system
• Increased customization (Include standard ePortfolio files in each folder upon logon)
Closing
• More collaboration among Xythos Higher Education customers(Xythos User Groups)
• Investigate consortium use of Xythos hosted repositories (Xythos OnDemand)
• Increase developer activities(http://developer.xythos.com)
