I. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: Describe what the program is designed to achieve and explain

how it is structured in order to accomplish the objectives.

Relay Graduate School of Education (Relay GSE)’s mission is to teach teachers and school leaders to develop in all students the academic skills and strength of character needed to succeed in college and life.

A central belief in Relay GSE’s philosophy in preparing educators is that great teachers are built, not born. Faculty and institutional leadership have defined quality educators as those who lead their P-12 students to meaningful academic achievement and character strength growth. Educators thatcan achieve these outcomes are knowledgeable and skilled in what Relay GSE programs define asfour elements of effective instruction: Content, Classroom Culture, Self and Other People, andTeaching Cycle. These elements form the core of Relay GSE’s conceptual framework for preparingeducators. This core culminates in Student Growth and Achievement, which is the final componentof Relay GSE’s conceptual framework and aims to develop data literacy among educators. It isthrough this framework that Relay GSE pursues its institutional mission.

During the two year program, graduate students will take six "Core," or general pedagogy, courses and five "Content," or methods, courses. Core courses represent the knowledge and skills all great teachers must have regardless of the grades or subjects that they teach. These classes encompass three of the four elements of effective teaching: Self and other people, classroom culture, and teaching cycle. Content coursework comprises the knowledge and skills necessary to teach a particular grade or subject. Content coursework is taught in grade- and/or subject-specific groups led by a faculty member with that particular area of teaching expertise and experience. Each course combines theory and practice related to these areas and culminates in performance assessments, providing graduate students the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of content and to reflect on their PK–12 students’ growth and achievement. All courses are hybrid in nature, composed of a combination of online work and in-person instruction.

Position: Dean Fellow Type: Full-Time Location: Indianapolis, Indiana How would you transform training for educators in one of the largest U.S. school districts? What if you could spend a year answering that question, and then have the chance to make your vision a reality? At Relay Graduate School of Education (Relay), we’re looking for an exceptional leader who will bring our groundbreaking approach to teacher and principal preparation to a new campus. As a Dean Fellow, you’ll spend a year planning the launch of our newest campus, and shaping your role as its future Dean. To succeed in this role, it’s not enough for you to know about educational theory and history. You must also believe that great educators can lift children out of poverty — and that teachers and school leaders can learn how to be great by mastering concrete, practical techniques for high-impact instruction. That’s because Relay’s approach to training educators is unlike any other in the United States. Our graduate students earn their master’s degrees only if they can show a measurable impact on student achievement in their classrooms. They earn credits not for the time they spend in class, but for demonstrating mastery of specific techniques. And their professors aren’t just great graduate-level instructors — they’re also some of the most effective educators in K-12 schools. In short, Relay focuses on results — not just at our institution, but also in the schools of the educators we train. As a Dean Fellow, and eventually as Dean, you will be responsible for helping Relay students achieve those results on a broad scale, across district and charter schools. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Serve as our primary instructional leader for the new campus by creating and teaching Relay courses, as well as advising graduate students

Manage and strengthen Relay’s relationships with key external partners, including donors, as well as prospective graduate students and faculty

Support your operations team member to coordinate all logistical aspects of Relay on the new campus, including but not limited to: scheduling; acquiring and creating all necessary resources; and working with shared services staff on recruitment, enrollment, communication, finance, student and staff policies, technology and facilities needs
