the weather outside says don’t come out. If you manage to step out of the bed into your trainers, that day is definitely going to be a better day.

As Esther mentions, let’s “infect” our colleagues and families with this wellness bug and push ourselves every day one step further. I have a colleague that one year ago never thought he could run past 5k, well this December he will run his first 21k. Hard work, discipline, passion!

Oh boy, what a year! And what a great future we have ahead of us.

Happy Holidays!Be Safe.

Javier Leon- Orantes E. General Manager, DeepOcean Mexico

Oh boy, what a year! We started with high expectations, best sales ever in 2013 and best backlog in history. We had good development throughout, but the year is now coming to an end and the future looks somewhat different.

Oil prices are lower than expected (lowest in 5yr), clients are taking second thoughts in their investment expectations, delays, cancellations; unfortunately a gloomier future.

But this is our industry, cyclical, sometimes up, sometimes down. As the most senior colleagues of our company have experienced over and over in their long careers, this is something that happens every now and then.

This time around the market is down, and unfortunately we will have to make hard sacrifices that nobody would like to make. But the cycle will be over eventually and things will look better. This is a time to “tighten our belts”, polish our best practices and challenge ourselves.

Quoting what Bart said a few weeks ago, this is a time to look for good “opportunities at a discount and emerge out of this softer patch as a stronger company”.

And in line with that, since the beginning of the year we made long term commitments that reinforce our hope for a great future in the company. This year we welcomed new colleagues and announced the opening of locations to be present in exciting new markets. We also secured tonnage to chase the opportunities and challenge our competition. We participated in different exhibitions where we shared success stories, the result of long working hours of our teams in engineering and operations; safety and human capital. What a Great Team we are!

Recently we were invited to share all that knowledge outside of the Oil and Gas industry to “find innovative technological solutions for deep and long-span fjord crossings”, supporting the development of infrastructure in Norway. Using offshore technology to connect more people around the country. Innovation.

Also this year many more of our colleagues showed interest in a healthier lifestyle. Between triathlons and marathons, or cycling to the office (which is not an easy feat in Haugesund) more and more colleagues are pursuing an active life. We should overpower ourselves every morning, wake up even if

CHANGES IN ISO STANDARDSNext year ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 will be updated and a new approach will be established in both standards. But is this approach really new?

New ISO revision considers “risk assessment” as a core part of the management system, establishing that preventive actions should be considered as part of this risk assessment, it means that it is better to be proactive instead of fighting fires with corrective actions. A good example of this approach was the implementation of “ACT”. We are facing a good opportunity to improve some of our routines, for sure the effort has been good but, as in ISO, there is always room for improvement. Let’s align our efforts thorough the organizations and work even harder for one common objective. Norway Netherlands, UK, Singapore, Brazil and Mexico working under one system in which we are all involved and more importantly “listened to”. The ACT for Safety Charter establishes “Teamwork” as one of our values, so let´s ACT as a team and evaluate the risk of not considering the opinion of all involved parties within the organization, everybody has something to say for improving our work environment.

Let´s focus in preventive actions. We need to become more proactive, this is the aim of new ISO standards. As a result we will continuously improve our system and we will achieve the world class QHSE performance we are striving for. In another line of ideas, we know that this Holiday Season brings us joy and wishes of health and welfare for our friends and loved ones.

However, unfortunately, Christmas has also its tricky part. In this season it is very common to relax our daily routines and lose focus in what we do; we all want to be home with family and friends celebrating. Distraction, frustration or rush can lead to incidents if we do not keep our eyes on the task; lack of concentration can develop into unsafe situations for us and our colleagues.Safety is the game to play with and it is exactly the game that we all want to win to keep up celebrating all year long.Focus, be safe.

DeepOcean AS is a partner in a Norwegian project aimed at finding innovative technological solutions for deep and long-span fjord crossings. The project task is to develop a cost effective alternative to traditional bridges by the use of offshore technology for the initiative “Ferry-free coastal route E39”. DeepOcean’s scope of work is to develop methods for marine operations and installation.

The less-complicated fjord crossings have already become ferry-free, however, the more extreme deep and wide crossings remain. One of these, the crossing of Sognefjorden, represents a prime example of the challenges in finding solutions and technical advances for crossing such fjords.

DeepOcean AS, together with their partners, is now in a phase of identifying new technical solutions for the project. Deep Oceans’s task is to develop and qualify procedures for marine operations and installation.

The research project is partly funded by The Research Council of Norway. In addition to DeepOcean AS, the project consortia consisting of Reinertsen AS (project owner), Snøhetta Oslo AS, Dr. techn. Olav Olsen AS, Sapa and Norsk Hydro ASA. The research project is set to conclude in 2016.

For DeepOcean the project got underway after we established an office in Trondheim. Being located in the same office complex as Reinertsen, DeepOcean were a natural partner for Reinertsen when it comes to marine operations.

FLOATING TUNNELThe concept consists of a floating bridge with a submerged floating tunnel at mid-span, which is likely to be the first of its kind ever put to use. It is designed to allow unhindered passage for ships in and out of the fjords.

In conjunction with the crossing, a new mooring concept for floating bridges with no

direct seabed mooring has been suggested (Reinertsen patent, WO 2013/191558 A1). This “artificial seabed” consists of pre-tensioned pipes across the fjord at a water depth of -30 meters, moored to each of the shores. This proposed concept utilizes proven mooring technology from tension leg platforms (TLPs), where the mooring of floating platforms was found economically advantageous in deep-water exploration.

LANDMARK CONSTRUCTIONThe research related to the project presents a pioneering and innovative approach to deep and long-span fjord crossings, and is very different compared to conventional air-spanned bridges. The innovative concept is believed to be more cost effective than traditional bridges, and will introduce a landmark that will characterize the landscape for the future. The ongoing research builds on Deep Ocean’s long experience with marine operations, but will at the same time challenge the way we operate, especially when it comes to manoeuvring long, slim constructions in narrow inshore waters as well as more exposed open waters. The skills developed working with this concept will give DeepOcean valuable experience applicable in future advanced offshore operations.

SUMMER INTERNSAs part of the research project, three master students from NTNU in Trondheim have worked on the project during the summer under supervision of one of DeepOcean’s project engineers. The students were given

free hands coming up with solutions for constructing and installing the artificial seabed, as well as concepts for ROV friendly installation tooling and mechanisms. To be able to distinguish the different concepts a methodology for concept selection was developed. In addition, the students were given an offshore trainee tour to build their competence with offshore operations.

Hanne-Sofie Strømberg, one of the students working with DeepOcean this summer, was pleased with the tasks and the project;

“This summer has been educational, and we have also learned a lot of the company itself. Every working day was a pleasure and we were all looking forward to the next day at work. DeepOcean has been as including as possible, and we loved the working environment. Even though we are looking forward to our next school year, we wouldn’t mind working on this exciting project for a while more”One of the students will also work on the project as part of his master thesis, looking into vortex induced vibrations on the construction.

GOING FORWARDThe project consortia will continue developing the fjord crossing concept to position us for upcoming projects. We are proud to be part of a project using proven offshore technology and operational experience in a new setting, and we believe the concept can contribute to realise some of the most challenging infrastructure projects in Norwegian modern times.

DEEP8 EVENTS

In October last, Deepocean set up a small serviced office in “The Blue Sky Development” at “Surf City” Westhill, Aberdeen, with a team of four. Over the past year the office has grown to a compliment of seventeen staff. At the end of October 2014 we relocated the office to our own branded premises in the midst of “Surf City” and are now neighbours to TAQA, Fairfield, AMEC, Technip & S7 and home to a great number of other clients. The new office is now fully operational, all internal and external signage has been installed, the office is fully furnished and the team are now operating full time from the new premises. A formal office opening will follow during early December. If ever you are passing through Aberdeen be sure to look us up, you will always receive a warm welcome.

EXHIBITIONS AND CONFERENCES 2015

STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE

DeepOcean will be present at various exhibitions and conferences in 2015. We are planning stands at the following events:

Subsea UK Expo11th to 13th February 2015, Aberdeen, UK

Underwater Technology Conference17th to 18th June 2015, Bergen, Norway

Offshore Europe8th to 11th September 2015, Aberdeen, UK

DeepOcean participated as Gold Sponsor on DecomWorld’s 3rd Annual Structural Integrity Management Conference in Aberdeen 6-7th November, and gave a presentation with the following title: “Structural Inspection as the Spearhead of a Complete IMR Service Provider”.

The presentation focused on showing the broad range of DeepOcean’s Structural Inspection capabilities, while an operational case study highlighted DeepOcean’s quick turnaround capabilities to provide full IMR service within an extremely short timeline (ref. below fig.). All events found place in October 2014 after DeepOcean identified a major anomaly on a structural component for a Client. The revealed integrity status was critical with high risk for dropped object and loss of production. DeepOcean’s quick turnaround was exemplified with a 20 days’ timeline including very short design and production phases to realise complete installation of a comprehensive emergency repair system to fully secure the dropped object potential.

One of Volstad Surveyors many tasks this season has been preparations for the installation of Polarled Pipeline Project.

The pipeline length is totally 481 km. The starting point for the Polarled Pipeline is Aasta Hansteen field (300 km west of Bodø) at 1300m water depth. The pipeline system consists of a 36” pipeline from Polarled PLEM to the landfall at Nyhamna (outside Molde).

Close to the landfall Volstad Surveyor has installed 36 Counteracts and 245 gravel bags (mostly 8 tons). The horizontal installation tolerance was tight (0.5m), which is at the limit of the combined GPS / HiPAP accuracy on 200-220m water depth.

After the installation work had been comp- leted for a section, 2 MBE lines (MultiBeam Echosounder) were run. An example can be seen in the images.

Since May 2005 I have been working as the Office Manager for DeepOcean in The Netherlands. During this decade I have had the privilege of working with an excellent and dedicated team which even in the most challenging times remains committed and ensures goals are met successfully. Not always equally as successful I try to set (and reach) goals for keeping fit in personal life. This means that every now and then the high heels are kicked off and replaced by sneakers. This year I entered a 1/8 triathlon for the first time. Running has been part of my workout for more than 15 years. Infected by my husband, who is a real bicycle freak, I added cycling and mountain biking to the training programme in 2012. Only 1 small step, or actually stroke, away from a triathlon was the conclusion over a good glass of wine with friends one evening. But the swimming was a lot harder than I expected. Although I finished in a reasonable time, there is definitely room for improvement. One of the biggest motivators

of completing a competition is the reward at the end. My friends will be waiting at the finish with carrot cake and champagne!Behind my house is a small lake where I can practise my swimming skills, but in the winter I train indoors. The harsh wind in The Netherlands is a good exercise for my cycling tours in the High Alpes in France during the summer holiday. Those are definitely my favourite but also most exhausting and exciting tours. The running for me is most fun in unknown locations. When I travel for work or go on city trips I bring my running gear and discover new routes.

We have more sport fanatics in the Den Helder office and I’m hoping that in 2015 we will be able to set up a business running team perhaps together with the Amsterdam office and participate in the “Dam to Dam” run. This 10 Mile run is held each year in the 3rd week of September, it starts in front of Amsterdam Central Station and ends in the centre of Zaandam. Along the route you are

encouraged by thousands of spectators, music and parties. This popular event is spread over 2 days and can have 65.000 participants. Hopefully DeepOcean will be on the run in 2015.But what mustn’t be forgotten is recovery! An important part of training is to relax. One of my popular places to recover is: subsea. In the Den Helder office we all have lunch together at a big table. During the lunch we talk about work, but also about other important things like bucket lists. It turned out that both Mirjam van der Pol (Sr. Data Processor) and I hadn’t ticked off scuba diving from the list yet. So in 2009 we decided to jump into the deep together. At a Dive Centre in Den Helder we completed the PADI Open Water, Advanced and Nitrox course. As buddies we have shared many memorable moments. We survived dives in The Netherlands with water temperatures of 4 degrees and enjoyed being accompanied by dolphins in the Red Sea. DeepOcean … Deeper Diving!

Author: Lynsey Fanning Marketing Manager, DeepOcean UK

The event took place in Barnard Castle on Sunday, September 21, and involved a 400m swim, an 18-mile bike ride and a three-mile off-road run.

The team, named The Three Amigo’s, took part in the sprint triathlon along with 150 other applicants. DeepOcean Engineering employee’s Jim Pyrah, Ewan Porteous and Chris Garcia won

first place with a five minute lead and a total time of one hour and 22 minutes. Head of geotechnical at DeepOcean UK, Jim Pyrah, lives in Gainford and has taken part in the race several times before. He said: “I completed the triathlon myself a few years ago, and have since done it as part of a team with my wife. “I enjoy taking part in the triathlon as it’s a very friendly event. We were quietly

confident but when we turned up and saw everybody standing around looking quite fit with flash bikes it did fill us with doubt. “When they announced that we had come first we were all really pleased. We’ve trained hard so it’s nice to know it paid off.” Mr Pyrah added: “We got a little plaque for winning and my children are very pleased. It’s on the bedside table and I will eventually bring it into work.”
