Welcome to the Summer season at Déda.Look inside for the perfect class or

performance for the months ahead.

It is clear from the media that the worldcurrently has an insatiable appetite for dancein all its forms. The government is nowpromoting dance as a way to get active, stay fit and remain healthy through the DanceChampions Group. At Déda our classprogramme offers many entry points for you to try out new dance and healthy living classes.We also have a range of intermediate andadvanced level classes to nurture enthusiastsand professionals.

In May we present our brand new Tango Club,hosted by Déda’s Argentine Tango tutors Njaaland Cidinha Bendixen. Our weekly drop-inTango classes have been really popular so comealong to try out the sexiest of all social dances!

If you’ve never seen a contemporary danceperformance, Dance3 is the ideal place to start.An evening of three contrasting pieces fromsome of the brightest choreographic talents atwork in the UK, those featured in this secondtriple-bill have worked with a dazzling array of dance artists – from Matthew Bourne to The Bolshoi Ballet.

Dance of a very different kind comes in theform of New Art Club’s Big Bag of Boom.

A brand-new show highlighting Tom Rodenand Pete Shenton’s uniquely daft blend ofdance and comedy, Big Bag of Boom previewsin Derby before hitting the Edinburgh festival.

Derby as a city is currently developing itsfestival offer through a programme entitledthe Cultural Landscape. Over the next threeyears the cultural organisations of Derby,including Déda, will create the groundwork for a series of festivals, including FormatPhotography Festival, Derby Festé and TakeThe Floor, part of the Summer Rhythmsprogramme. Keep your eyes peeled, as Derbybecomes a city with a year-round programmeof international festival activity!

As part of this year’s Take The Floor, we’reproud to present the brilliant Funny Bones atthe Darwin Suite in collaboration with DerbyLIVE. See page 17 for details of this entertaining(and very wet) introduction to dance!

With all these great performances and classes,including children’s theatre and our popularsalsa, jazz and burlesque events, we hope towelcome you to Déda again very soon.

Carly SpoonerMTV Moves tutor Carlybegan dancing at the ageof seven at Tiptoe Schoolof Performing Arts beforetraining at the MidlandsAcademy of Dance and

Drama for three years. She has performed inmany professional productions includingpantomimes and The Best of the West Endwhere she performed alongside the cast ofWicked, Les Misérables and We Will Rock You.

Carly loves teaching MTV Moves at Déda asshe enjoys working with people of differentages and abilities and watching them leavethe class with more confidence and style.

The Art ofClowningPresented by Shifting Sands Theatre Company

Following on from last season’s successfulworkshop, Gerry Flanagan is back with anotherclowning workshop from Shifting Sands TheatreCompany.

The Clown negotiates the world by playing withit. When we play we are full of energy – alert andspontaneous; there is a total belief and honesty.

This workshop is open to all those involved indisciplines associated with the performing arts.

Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze and Sugar ShackPresented by Writing East Midlands and Déda

Lyric Lounge 2010 will be a season of mini-festivals across the East Midlands celebratingspoken word with an aim to inspire people asreaders, writers and performers.

The season begins here at Déda, kicking off on Friday at 8pm with a very special set fromrenowned dub poet Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze. Jean’sheadline performance will be followed byDéda’s urban music and poetry club, SugarShack. Open mic slots will be available.

Tango Club at CUBEPresented by Déda and Luna y Molino

Argentine Tango is haunting and sensuousand often regarded as the world’s mostexquisite social dance. Come and experiencethe magic of a milonga – a tango dance party – hosted by Déda’s tango tutors Njaal and Cidinha Bendixen.

The night starts with a lesson for beginnersand improvers from 8pm, followed by a tangodance party with a mixture of traditional andelectronic tango music.

Absolute beginners are welcome and nopartner is necessary, so come along and have a go!

Looking for the RainbowPresented by Big Window Theatre Company

One morning Kirsty wakes up to see the mostbeautiful rainbow ever. And the rainbow’s endis only three gardens away.

She persuades her mum to come with her andtogether they set off to find it. Soon they arelost and the real adventure begins – how tofind their way home.

Join Kirsty and her mum as they adventurethrough the colourful world of the rainbow,climbing mountains, exploring caves andreceiving help from – amongst others – aclockwork mouse!

Looking for the Rainbow is participatorytheatre for children aged 18 months to 4 years and their families. The performancewill take place as part of the Stompers class programme.

Funny BonesDanceXchangePresented by Derby LIVE and Déda

Funny Bones is a brand new double bill ofcontemporary dance for children aged 5 yrs+and their families. This funny and charmingshow will introduce children to a new world of dance and movement.

Enrique Cabrera’s DanSense is a beautifullycreative piece. Look out for costumes coveredwith plastic spoons, and water-filled bucketsto soak the dancers – and the audience!

The SYNAPSE FestivalThe SYNAPSE visual arts festival profiles the work of emerging artists from thecounties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire andNottinghamshire in order to create anenvironment where talent is supported and creativity is allowed to flourish.

By placing the work in a number of publicspaces, the festival will ensure that art is atthe heart of local communities, encouragingcreativity and diversity.

The festival aims to build on the success ofthe One Step Beyond Fringe Festival in 2008where 15 artists were exhibited in fourvenues in Derby. Venues and audiences wereintroduced to new and fresh artists andpartnerships were nurtured between thevenues, audiences and the artists in Derby.

Aspiration NormantonAspiration Normanton is a unique exhibitionexploring the diverse places and faces ofNormanton, and discovering the gems it holds.Surtal Asian Arts is proud to debut the work ofNeal Morgan (photographer) and Nisha Nath(creative writer).The exhibition is supported by theUniversity of Derby and DerbyCommunity Safety Partnership.

Glocal by Artcore Artcore is a UK-based group that aims topromote and develop the visual arts for thebenefit of artists and communities throughoutDerbyshire and beyond. The Glocal Project willcommunicate art without borders whilecelebrating the rich diversity of Derbyshire.
