Reflection for the Feast of the Holy Family:
Like any other family, Jesus, Mary, and
Joseph had hardships and struggles:
Mary giving birth while traveling, the
young family having to flee from the
bloody persecution of Herod, living as
immigrants in Egypt, and returning to
Israel with fear. Along with trials came
the constant presence of God. Perhaps
through different means, but God
reaches out to guide our families with
the same divine love that surrounded
the Holy Family. May we persevere in
faith as they did, trusting in God to lead
us from struggles to triumph in his Son
Jesus.

Come and celebrate His birth. This cantata is truly a Christmas Prayer and a Christmas
Celebration. Come, pray and celebrate on Sunday, January 5th at 4:00 pm in All Saints
Church, 21 N. Cleveland, McAdoo. Be sure to join us and bring your friends as we echo that

ONE SOLITARY LIFE
Here is a man who was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew
up in another obscure village. He worked in a carpenter shop until he was thirty and then for
three years he was an itinerant preacher. He never owned a home. He never had a family. He
never went to college. He never traveled more than two hundred miles from the place he was
born. He never did one of the things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials
but himself. He had nothing to do with this world except naked power of his divine manhood.
While still a young man, the tide of public opinion turned against him. His friends ran away.
One of them denied him. He was turned over to his enemies. He went through the mockery of
trial. He was nailed upon the cross between two thieves. His executioners gambled for the only
piece of property he had on earth while he was dying and that was his coat. When he was dead
he was taken down and laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend. Nineteen wide
centuries have come and gone and today he is the centerpiece of the human race and the
leader of the column of progress. I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that
ever marched and all the navies that ever were built and all the parliaments that ever sat and
all the kings that ever reined, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as
powerfully as has that one solitary life.
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS:
Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and
their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the
name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Holy days of obligation are days of the year when Catholics must attend Mass in addition to
the normal Sunday Mass. The United States has six holy days of obligation:
November 1st: All Saints Day
December 8th: The Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
December 25th: Christmas, the Nativity of Our Lord.
Wednesday, January 1st, 2014: The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of
God
Thursday, May 29th
, 2014: 40 days after Easter Sunday, Ascension
Thursday
Friday, August 15th, 2014: the Assumption of Mary into Heaven
January 1st, August 15th & November 1st and December 8th are holy days of obligation except
when they fall on a Saturday or a Monday. Then they are ABROGATED, which means they
are a holy day but there is no obligation to go to Mass.
In the United States, Christmas Day, December 25th is always a holy day of obligation, even
when it falls on Saturday or Monday, and the Immaculate Conception, December 8, is always
a Holy Day except when it falls on a Sunday. The reason is that Christmas and Easter are the
highest-ranking holy days, and the Immaculate Conception is the patronal feast for the United
States.
Holy days are like Sundays in that Catholics must attend Mass, and if possible, refrain from
unnecessary servile work. Some Catholic countries, such as Italy, Spain and Ireland, give
legal holiday status to some of these holy days, so people can attend Mass and be with family
instead of at work.
The obligation to go to Mass depends on the Country that you find yourself in at the time. For
example, if you are in Italy on March 19th, it is a Holy Day for you or if you are in the United
States on March 19th, St. Joseph Day is not a Holy Day of obligation to go to Mass.
THE NEXT HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION IS:
Wednesday, January 1st
The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God
MASS SCHEDULE:
Tuesday, December 31st, New Year’s Eve: 6:00 pm.
Wednesday, January 1st, New Year’s Day: 8:30 am.
There is NO 11:00 am Mass New Year’s Day.
Any overflow of the New Year’s Masses will be in the Church Hall.
