WELCOMEA special welcome to those who are single, married, divorced, “it’s complicated,” gay, filthy rich, dirt poor, or no hablo Ingles. There is a place for you if you are over 60 but not grown up yet or a teenager growing up too fast. We welcome soccer moms, NASCAR dads, Buccaneer fans and NY Giant fans, starving artists, tree-huggers, those in recovery, and those who are still addicted. We welcome you if you sing like Pavarotti or can’t carry a note in a bucket. You are welcome here if you’re just browsing, just got bored at the bus stop, just woke up, or just got out of jail. We don’t care if it is your first Sunday at church or whether you’ve been to Church more times than the pope. We welcome you if you are having problems or are feeling overwhelmed or if you don’t like “organized religion.” If you are looking for a fresh start, a fresh cup of coffee, or a hug from a new friend there is a place for you here. We welcome those who are wearing “church clothes” and those who are wearing their only clothes. We are so glad to see those who are inked, pierced, or both, those who could use a prayer right now, those who haven’t been to church since Aunt Carol’s funeral, and those who got lost in traffic and wound up here by mistake. We welcome seekers and doubters, bleeding hearts and jaded cynics, the lost, the found… and you!

WHAT TO EXPECT AT ST THOMAS MORE

WelcomingOur parishioners love meeting new people and sharing their lives with others. You’ll also be greeted by some of the most welcoming people you’ve ever met at a church - and we’re not just talking about the Hospitality Team.

Family-focusedIf you have children, they are ALWAYS welcome to celebrate Mass with the community! In fact, our church was purposefully built without a cry room and with a special family bathroom with child-sized “facilities” because we want children at Mass. Our 11:30AM Mass also has a Children’s Ministry for those families who would like children ages 3-6 to worship in a child-friendly environment while parents are participating in the Liturgy.

Dynamic WorshipThroughout the Mass, you’ll be encouraged and envirgorated by the community’s full, conscious and active participation in the Liturgy. Our community loves to SING! The Word of God is proclaimed in a dynamic fashion. The homilies are geared towards loving people where they are - and challenging them to get better.

A CHURCH UNLIKE ANY OTHERThere’s so much more to talk about! Our parish is a wonderful, dynamic community and we welcome you to celebrate liturgy with us this weekend!

It doesn’t matter if this is your first time, 50th time, or first time in 50 years - know that you always have a place to worship, and a community to belong to at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Our Pastor, Father Henry, recently celebrated his 14th year with us, and recently celebrated his 43rd year as a priest.

His favorites: being with people especially parishioners; golfing; skiing; travel; The Philadelphia Eagles; and The Blessed Mother’s Favorite Team: Notre Dame.

He believes there are 8 Sacraments; the 8th being the preaching of Sacred Scriptures, because you cannot come to know Jesus Christ without first “hearing” about him. Intertwining his homilies with personal experiences, especially about his family, he takes the joys and challenges of modern life and helps us see how they echo the struggles and consolations found in the Scriptures. Whatever issues may be facing those gathered for worship, whether it be on the personal level (stress, unemployment, family life), or on the inter-personal level (homelessness, the economy), Father Henry helps us see how the Readings can be applied to the choices we make each and every day. You can listen to his homilies on our website: www.stthomasmoresrq.org

He is the spiritual leader of our 5,000 members as well as many more visitors and winter residents. Passionate about making people feel welcome, he preaches WELCOME by his actions and interaction with everyone and encourages us to do the same. “Ask a friend…Invite someone to join you…join us at…consider biking with us…we have a trip planned…don’t forget the Reconciliation service…” Fill in the blanks, but be assured he wants you to reach out, he wants you to be there.

During his leadership, our membership has gone from 600 families to almost 3,000. We have built the Spirit Center, enlarged and refurbished our church and seen the growth of our parishioner involvement and engagement. With over 60 ministries within our parish he has led us to seek ways to serve each other.

He tries never to miss an opportunity to be with people and especially the sick and dying.

Contact information:Be part of his email blast: either write him

personally at [email protected] or call 941-923-1691 to be on his email list of parishioners.

The Value of the FamilyVatican City, Dec 17, 2014 / 05:06 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope

Francis spoke today about Jesus’ choice to be born into a family, saying that it shows the importance of the vocation, which Mary and Joseph epitomized through their everyday holiness.

“We can learn so much from Mary and Joseph, and especially from their love for Jesus. They help us to rediscover the vocation and mission of the family, of every family,” the Pontiff told pilgrims present in St. Peter’s Square for his Dec. 17 general audience.

Jesus, he noted, “was raised in an atmosphere of religious devotion (and) he learned from the words and example of Mary and Joseph.”

In his second catechesis on the family, Pope Francis revealed that in preparation for next year’s ordinary synod of bishops on the family, the entire year’s weekly catechesis would be dedicated to that theme.

Advent, he said, is a time of prayerful expectation for the Lord’s coming, and it invites each person to think about how the family, God’s gift since the beginning of creation, is honored and confirmed through Christ’s incarnation.

“The closeness of Christmas reminds us that God wanted to be born into a family, in a small, remote village of the Roman Empire,” the Pope explained, noting how Jesus remained “in the bosom of a pious, working” family in Nazareth for close to 30 years before starting his public ministry.

Although the Gospels don’t say much about Jesus’ childhood, it’s safe to assume that Jesus led a very normal family life, he said, noting how the Gospel of Luke tells us that Jesus grew “in wisdom, age and grace” and learned from Mary and Joseph.

“Among other activities of everyday life, (Jesus) was dedicated to the fulfillment of social and religious duties: working with Joseph, listening to Scripture and praying the psalms,” the Bishop of Rome said, noting how Mary and Joseph “welcomed Jesus with love” despite having to overcome many difficulties for him.

“His was not an unrealistic family, a fable,” the pontiff said, explaining that Mary and Joseph are a prime example of how to live the mission and vocation of family life, particularly in the love they had for Jesus.

Pope Francis then called on every Christian family to make a place for Jesus in their home, because “it is through the love of such ‘normal’ families that God’s Son quietly comes to dwell among us, bringing salvation to our world.”

The Roman Pontiff concluded by praying that each family would have the desire to welcome Jesus with pure and grateful hearts.

Top 5 Reasons to bring your child to Mass:

1) The liturgy belongs to the baptized. It’s their right to be there!

2) Keep the pastor on his feet. Fr. Henry has his homily notes for a reason; children won’t distract him and he likes the challenge.

3) Children learn by doing. How can we expect them to know how to celebrate the liturgy unless they regularly take part in it?

4) Give others an opportunity to exercise kindness, patience, and understanding. Far too often we think of the liturgy as “me and Jesus” time, when in reality it is a communal celebration.

5) Jesus said to “let the little ones come to me. Children receive grace just by being in God’s presence - and so do parents!

Children at Mass - a message to welcome babies and children to celebrate the liturgy!

“Babies cry, make noise, go here and there. But it annoys me when a baby cries in church and there are those who say he needs to go out. The cry of a baby is God’s voice: never drive them away from the church!” -Pope Francis

Parish NewsOur Hospitals and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act)

If you or a friend are in Sarasota Memorial or Doctors Hospitals and are looking for spiritual care, there is a procedure you must follow due to the new laws that are now inforced.

If you are at Sarasota Memorial and wish Holy Communion or a visit by the Catholic chaplain you must:1. Dial 0 and ask for the Chaplain’s Office and request Communion. This chaplain is full-time at the

hospital and lives at St. Martha’s Parish. We pay a portion of his salary to ensure our Catholics are seen.2. If you are going to be there a few days, call the Parish Office and let us know. Father Michal or

Father Henry will then visit you. Both priests visit the hospitals once a week. The Chaplain visits every day. It is important to take the above steps, as there no longer is a Catholic parish list available to the priest.

3. The same is required at Doctors Hospital and Hospice.

The laws, though they seem strict, are for the privacy and protection of the hospital patient.

More NewsOur Hearing Loop System in the Church Sanctuary

How does a Hearing Loop work? A Hearing Loop, through the use of a Loop amplifier and strategically placed wire around the room, transmits a signal (electromagnetic) that is received directly by a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-coil installed in it.

What is a T-coil? A T-coil or Telecoil, is a small metal rod with metal wire wrapped around it that is installed in a hearing aid or cochlear implant which is necessary to receive the Loop signal.

What is another use for the T-coil? Another use for a T-coil, in fact the original use for the T-coil, is for communicating on the telephone.

How do I know if I have a T-coil? The T-coil program necessary for use with the Loop System is one that is manually activated by the user. This done either by pressing a button on the hearing aid or cochlear implant itself or by use of a remote control. You may presently be pressing this button to use the telephone. It is the same program. If you are uncertain if you have a manual T-coil program, consult with your hearing professional as you may have one but it may not be activated.

I have an automatic T-coil or phone program. is that the same thing? No, it is not. The automatic program is activated by the hearing aid/cochlear implant detecting the receiver of the phone, which has a magnetic component to it, as it gets close to the ear. The signal the Loop creates is not strong enough to activate it.

When I turn on my T-coil program. I can hear the sermon or program but I can’t hear anyone around me. Why? In most cases, when activating the T-coil program, it disables the microphones on the hearing aid/cochlear implant allowing you to only hear the Loop System. Consult with your hearing professional as they may be able to set it so that the microphone and T-coil are activated at the same time.

Can my hearing aid be retrofitted for the T-coil if it does not presently have one? Yes,in many cases. Consult with your hearing professional to confirm.

Is a Loop System. and the electromagnetic field it creates. safe for a pacemaker user? Yes, the electromagnetic field it creates is not strong enough to affect a user.
