This is the time of yearwhen the attention of theisland turns to The Port of

Gustavia. Port Director Bruno Gréauxand his staff are busy from early morn-ing to sundown, as mega-motor-yachtsand sailboats are arriving daily, jockey-ing for spots to enjoy the peak of theholiday season in the island’s little port.The main docks are already full, withmany of the port’s annual guests at theirhabitual spots; the mega-yacht, Ultima

III, has taken up residence near one endof the dock and the classic wooden sail-boat, Ticonderoga, is tied up at the otherend, as usual. One of the main economicforces on the island, the port has under-gone major improvement over the pastyear, with the architecturally sophisti-cated “Capitainerie” providing newoffices for the staff as well as a multi-purpose room that has proved useful fora variety of events, serving as the press-room for the Transat ag2r last spring,then the home of the local theatre festi-val, and most recently, the RotaryClub’s benefit harp concert.

By the end of December, a flotilla ofsailboats will have arrived for the NewYear’s Eve Regatta, which along withthe St. Barth Bucket, is one of the majorsailing events organized locally. ThePort of Gustavia stays on its toes duringthese events, assuring safe entry andexit for the numerous boats as theymaneuver in and out of the port. OnNew Year’s Eve, the port is really hop-ping, with parties on many of the boatsand dancing to live music on the dock.There are usually so many boats in the

harbor at the stroke of midnight thattheir lights seem to twinkle all the wayfrom St Barth to St Martin. But the portis not just a place to party. Gréauxreminds all clients of the port to respecttheir neighbors in terms of noise, not tolight fires or bbq’s while in the portzone, and that the trash area on the dockis strictly for household trash. All otheritems must be taken to the municipaldump near Public. The simple rules andregulations for the port are spelled outin its official magazine, Harbour, whosehandsome 10th edition is available atthe Capitanerie.

This is the first season that Van KiPass has been in the harbor however, as its newowner, Liza Baldwin, recently renovated this65’ wooden sloop just in time to sail in lastsummer’s 100th edition of the Newport-Bermuda Race— and win in its class! A nativeof Newport, RI, Baldwin is new to the racingscene, but she certainly has a beautiful boat anda fearless skipper. Jeffrey DreadHaitian-born artist Jeffrey Dread is often seen in

Saint Barth, zipping around the island with the topdown on his cool, black convertible Mini Cooper.

Last season he was part of the art scene with anexhibit at Nikki Beach entitled Hip Rock Holly-

wood Icon, with pop-style portraits of such stars asBono, P. Diddy, Mick Jagger, Sophia Loren, SharonStone, and Giorgio Armani. This year he has not yetbeen sighted on the island but has launched a series

of holiday gifts including t-shirts (for humans andtheir pooches), boxer shorts, hats, bags, mugs, and

even refrigerator magnets with his pop images,ranging from a New York City taxicab to his recent

portrait of Robert Kennedy. There is somethingalmost Andy Warhol-like about Dread’s work, with

Ajewelry store thatstands out from thecrowd is Donna del

Sol, a boutique that has beenopen in Saint Barth since1994, on the upper level ofthe Carre d’Or in Gustavia(She also now has a smallstore at the Guanahani Hotelfor those who do not want tobattle traffic in town).Recently expanded toinclude the space next door,the boutique has showcasesof ready-to-wear pieces, butalso serves as a showroomwhere customers can ordercustom designs, tailored toany budget. The owner of the store,Donna Rosell, is an Ameri-

can who has lived in SaintBarth for 17 years. Her phi-losophy is to create jewelrythat the modern woman canactually wear. “I like to setprecious stones in sportiermountings, in keeping withtoday’s more activelifestyle,” she says. Anexample of this is her link-ing of diamonds in any sizeand any color with simplegold links that can be wornas a bracelet or necklace.“You should be able to wearyour jewelry,” she insists. Unusual gemstones areanother signature of theDonna del Sol collections:opals and tourmalines incustom-cut shapes and col-ors can be made into pieces dressy enough for a black-

tie event. “Coral and otherstones in all shades of redand orange, as well as pink,are very popular,” Rosellnotes. She works with fieryopals, pink and red sap-phires, and pale pink kun-zite, pairing them in unusualcombinations such as pinkopals and brown diamonds.“I recently completed anecklace of natural pinkpearls. They are very soft onthe skin,” she says.A recent addition to theDonna del Sol line is theSymbology collection,which includes a white andyellow gold peace symbol,with one side representingpeace; the other love. Thiscollection also includespieces based on the prayersof the Kabbalah, which isstudied by Jews and non-Jews around the world. “Wehave ten different prayersthat can be laser-cut directlyinto the stones, so that eachpiece is custom-made,”explains Rosell, whobelieves in the mysticalpowers these prayers can

offer. Her newest collection iscalled “Astro Us,” and willlaunch this season. “Thepieces include a circle ofZodiac signs with a sun inthe middle with white dia-monds to represent thefemale and a flame of blackdiamonds to represent themale in a couple,” sheexplains. “The sun andflame can be moved to eachperson’s individual sign.These make very personalgifts.”On the horizon is a newboutique in St. Tropez,France, which will double asa distribution point for theDonna del Sol brand inEurope. “This is a naturalexpansion,” says Rosell,who caters to a decidedlyinternational clientele. ■■■■■■■Champagne Bruno Paillard Brut1er CuvéeHistory:Born in Riems in 1953, Bruno Pail-lard comes from an old family ofwinemakers and created his ownchampagne house in 1981.The most recent of the champagnehouses, Bruno Paillard is an independ-ent, family owned enterprise. A spe-cialist in high-quality champagne,they produce 600,000 bottles per yearand export to 22 different countries.They use only the best quality grapesfrom the champagne region, withgrapes from different areas to createthe best blend, and an excellent drychampagne with complexity. Pro-duced using grapes from just one year,each bottle is marked with the year ofthe vintage; this has become an impor-tant way for consumers to know whatthey are buying, as all wines taste dif-ferent from year to year.

Taste:The aroma first reveals the citrus fruitsof Chardonnay: lime and grapefruit.Then the red fruit aromas arerevealed: currant, raspberry, andMorello cherries, characteristic ofPinot Noir. When aerated, other aro-mas such as candied fruits or the exot-ic aromas of Pinot Meunier arerevealed (pineapple, banana).The palate is very clear, with a slighthint of plum and pear, and a pleasantlemon-butter flavor that lingers. Thetiny bubbles are a sign of quality.This champagne should be served at48°F with hors d’oeuvres such asduck liver terrine and brioche toast, orwith a fresh fish tartar, dill and citrus.

Now in its third year of serviceto Saint Barth, TradewindAviation offers a stylish way

For many years the restaurant atFrançois Plantation was one ofthe culinary highlights of the

island, and after several changes of chefand direction in the kitchen, it seems asif the restaurant must once again be con-sidered among the best “tables” in SaintBarth. Back for her second season in thekitchen is Australian chef Sharon Cham-berlain, who trained in her native coun-try, at Marks, a restaurant on the coast ofVictoria about 90 minutes outside ofMelbourne.Chamberlain brings with her an open,multi-cultural culinary philosophy.“Coming from Australia, which is a verymulti-cultural country, we like to mixtextures and flavors to adapt to variouscultures.” With an eye to local productsin the Caribbean, Chamberlain usesfruits and vegetables from Guadeloupeand Saint Martin as well as fish fromSaint Barth (in addition to fish and meatfrom France.) “I like nice, fine food,with clear flavors,” she says.

Wines from François Plantation’s exten-sive cellar enhance her menus. In fact,Robert Eden, the owner of FrançoisPlantation, is a vintner as well, withvineyards in the Languedoc Roussillonregion in France. His environmentallyfriendly wines can be sampled at therestaurant. The pastry chef is Jimmy Frannais,whose signature dessert is a “cigar”made with tobacco ice cream and cognacmousse. Since this taste combinationmight not suit all palettes, his simplerdesserts include cheesecake and a spicychocolate tart.

Chamberlain also works with restaurantconsultant Christophe Langrée. Togetherthey work on menus and keep an eye onoverall excellence. “I think people cometo François Plantation for fine food, andthey want to be surprised by things theydon’t find everyplace else. At least 30 sailboatsare expected to par-ticipate in the 11th

annual edition of the NewYear’s Eve Regatta, a just-for-fun event held every yearon December 31 to kick offthe end-of-the-year holiday

festivities. Organized since1998 by Marc Del Giudice,skipper of the 65’ sloop Mis-chievous, in close collabora-tion with the Saint BarthYacht Club and The Port ofGustavia, this race was initi-ated in 1995 by a group ofAmerican skippers who came

up with the idea for anaround-the-island race forsailboats of all sizes, fromsmall local boats to magnifi-cent sailing ships such asEndeavor, Mari-Cha III, Zin-garo, and Visione, who haveall participated in the past.This year, the flotilla isexpected to be spectacularonce again. “Captains arebeginning to call to tell methey want to participate,” says

Del Giudice. “Already on themoorings in the port are Equ-us, Mischievous, Gitana, Tri-umph, Van Ki Pass, Juno, andVivid, a new 90’ Swan.Things will really heat uparound December 28 when allthe other boats start arriving.”The pre-race briefing will beheld on Saturday, December30 at 5:00pm at the Capi-tainerie (Port of Gustavia) onthe main dock, with a barorganized by the Yacht Clubdownstairs and a quiet placefor captains and skippers tosign up for the race upstairs.All those sailing must be amember of a yacht club, andwhile there is not an officialentry fee, each boat is askedto give $1 or one euro perfoot of the boat’s length as a

donation to the Saint BarthYacht Club. The staggereddeparture times begin at10:00am the next day, withthe starting line out in front ofCorossol, and a race coursethat heads around the islandpast Gustavia toward Saline,Toiny, St. Jean, aroundForchue, and back to Gus-tavia. It generally takesalmost two hours for thefastest boats to sail around the

island, but the record to beat,set in 2004 by the 147’ Balticyacht, Visione, stands at 1hour, 32 minutes, 7 seconds.Can anyone beat that timethis year? The awards cere-mony will take place on theQuai Général de Gaulle afterthe race, at approximately5:00pm, with beautiful silvertrophy cups sponsored byTrey Fitzgibbons, the ownerof Mischievous. A nauticalevent you won’t want to miss,with a fabulous display ofspinnakers unfurled fromToiny to Colombier and atricky slalom among the out-lying islands of Frégate, Bon-homme, Pelé, and Boulanger,the race is the perfect way ofsaying Happy New Year SaintBarth!

The cruise ship, easy-Cruise One, made itsfirst appearance in

Saint Barth as part of theinaugural voyage for its newCaribbean itinerary. SteliosHaji-Ioannou, the entrepre-neurial founder of easyJet,who became famous aftercreating the low-coast airlineten years ago, personallywelcomed the 80 passengerswho were aboard this cruise.

Saint-Barthélemy: an exclu-sive destination for a handfulof well-heeled clients? Anidea that has flown out thewindow thanks to the newconcept in cruising launchedby the group that foundedeasyJet. The cruise ship,easyCruise One, now in itssecond winter season in theCaribbean, made its first stopin Saint Barth on Saturday,December 9. The 80 passen-gers, for the most part Eng-lish-speaking, were broughtinto the Port of Gustavia viatenders, with the ship itselfanchored in the outer harbor.

The “port intensive”idea

The group shopped in Gus-tavia of course, visiting asampling of the island’s bou-tiques that offer everything

from luxury goods to items“made in Saint Barth.” Theywere able to complete theirday in port by enjoying anevening meal at one of therestaurants that serves theisland’s celebrated Frenchcuisine. This is where therevolutionary ideas of SteliosHaji-Ioannou come in.

He has abandoned the tradi-tional formula of the “allinclusive” crusie: on his “no-frills” ships, passengers payonly for the cost of the nightsthey spend aboard the ship,which are in fact very rea-sonable (starting as low as13 euros per night). He thenorganizes the rest: all of theelements of a cruise thatwere formerly figured intoone overall price, fromdrinks and meals aboard theship to round trip airfare andtransportation to and fromthe initial port, with every-thing on a pay as you gobasis.

Plying the waters of theCariibean for the second sea-son, easyCruiseOne hasembarked on a new circuitwhich includes the islands ofSint Maarten/Saint-Martin,St. Barthélemy, Anguilla, St.Kitts, Nevis, and Antigua.The “port intensive” idea isbased on having many feweractivities aboard the ship,with an accent on discover-

ing the port itself instead.

Even the schedule is differ-ent: the boat is at sea part ofthe morning, but on the otherhand, it remains in port muchlater (sailing between 3:00-7:00am). This concept is alsorather revolutionary in theworld of cruising. “We havethe capacity for 170 passen-gers,” notes Stelios, whoadmits that the season startedoff a little quietly. “Decem-

ber is generally a very goodmonth and I remain confi-dent.” This 39 year-oldentrepreneur goes from onesuccessful project to thenext, and is never short ofnew ideas: after the success

of easyJet, he moved intohotels, car rentals, and low-cost credit. His dream is todevelop the low-cost cruisemarket even more with aship for 600 passengers, tobe built in his native countryof Greece.

Atouch of winter can be seenat the Carl Gustav Hotelwhere a collection of paint-

ings entitled “Winter Trees On OakPaneled Boxes” is on display. Thepaintings are by Michelle Marie, a NewYork-based visual artist and singerwhose met with international acclaimwhen she painted a series of societywomen who were past their glory days,in the series she calls Old BeautyQueens. Actual gemstones, from dia-monds to sapphires, represented thewomen’s jewels. Michelle Marie alsohas a collection of almost whimsicalflower paintings, with intensely brightcolors, which capture the mood of anexuberant summer day.The paintings at the Carl Gustav, which

will remain on exhibit for the entire year,are more geometric in form, with groupsof differently shaped triangles creatingthe starkness of the trees in winter. Thealmost monochromatic paintings aresmall, but a grouping of two or fourwould make a nice visual statement, asthey complement one another in theme.The oak boxes add a touch of naturalwood to the trees.

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia,Michelle Marie now splits her timebetween New York City (an apartment inManhattan) and the country (a house inupstate New York), and articles aboutboth of her homes acclaim her sense ofstyle and decor. Her paintings reflect thelandscapes of these two different envi-ronments as well as her travels, with col-

lections such as Summer Fun and BananaTrees. Michelle Marie works primarily inoils, but giclee prints, or high-quality lim-ited-edition reproductions, signed andnumbered, are available of many of herpaintings.
