Introduction
HSUPA 16QAM Feature trial
HSUPA 16QAM feature enables 11.5 Mbit/s peak UL data rate by sending four bits persymbol instead of two.
Motivation & benefits Using higher order modulation, more symbols can be transmitted, therefore more
bits can be assigned to each symbol, while the duration of symbol is kept. Thisresults in higher Bit Rate.
Most beneficial with low intra-cell interferences. That practically means that 16

QAM is applied in scenario with single user per cell and relatively small distance toBTS antenna Advanced receiver technology (FDE) provides major benefit to uplink with 16 QAM Interference cancellation techniques are welcome to lower the intra-cell noise.
Drawbacks
Reduction of the Euclidean distance between adjacent symbols. This results instricter requirement in SNR per symbol to achieve the same BER
RoT(Rise over Thermal) limit requirement rises high, as the own signal interferencesfrom 16QAM are high. Therefore this feature is more useful for micro, pico cells.

• Trial is planned in RSRT03 RNC of Surat city. This RNC is running on RU40 softwareRN7.0 1.0
• 10 sites are selected with consideration that EDCH_category_7 UE penetration is higher
and BTS are up graded to RU40 (FSMD hardware).• Feature is activated on 4th April-2014.Vary less 16QAM PDUs are observed after feature

• There is no negative impact is observed on major KPIs(Dashboard KPIs)• HSUPA traffic and HSUPA active cell throughput is increased a little after

Field test was carried out on 12th May, 2014 early morning- 4:50 am to5:30am.
PrxMaxTargetBTS & PrxMaxOrigTargetBTS parameter are changed to 18from 12 for testing purpose in cell 33151. (RSCP= -50 dBm)
As we don’t have release-7 & E-DCH cat-7 UE in drive test kit, field test was
carried out with help of speednet application and NetPerSec application inPC. UE was connected to PC via modem connectivity.

We received max UL speed 10.3 Mbps maxaverage speed 7 Mbps during test when UE is
connected to PC via Modem. Also, we received 7.07Mbps through speednetapplication.

• There are several 16QAM PDUs observed after feature activation. This provefeature is working.
• There is no impact on existing KPIs.• We received max 7.07 Mbps throughput through speednet application and10.3Mbps through netPerSec application during field test.

Recommendation:-• High UL throughput can directly improve end customer perception. However,this feature is more suitable for micro cell, shopping malls etc where users areclose to sites due high C\I requirement.
