As I sit on the deck of our beach house listening to the surf and feeling the breeze, life is good.

You could have had the opportunity to enjoy this also if you had gone to Founders’ Day. One of our members had the winning bid on a weekend at our beach house. There were sev-

eral other very nice items offered in the silent auction during the event. The proceeds benefit the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House, one of our charities. Steve Krysil, of Porsche Cars North America, gave us some interest-ing insight into Porsche’s victory at Le Mans. There was also a display of the photo contest entries which were very well done, and we were able to vote for the People’s Choice. There was also excellent food and great cama-raderie. Next year, put the Founders’ Day event on your calendar as a must-do.

Of course, this is the time of year when there are sev-eral events that require our time and attention: holidays and end of year activities at work. I want to briefly recap the successes of your club. As of the end of October, we had over 2,500 members! Your club is in a very strong financial position. We have overcome the loss of a sig-nificant member who contributed greatly to our track events. We have adopted an additional charity, the Boot Campaign, which helps veterans. Our Drivers’ Educa-tion Program has been successful. We had two successful Club Races, one at COTA and one at MotorSport Ranch. Our monthly socials have been very well attended. The Saturday/Sunday drives have drawn many attendees as have our monthly socials. Our Rally program has been successfully revived.

All of these successes have been made possible because of the time and talents that members have contributed in each area. Now to make it easier to volun-teer, we have a chairperson for volunteers. So if someone wants to volunteer and does not know where they can help, the volunteer chairperson can guide them. Jim Gallegos is that chairper-son.

Next month I will be talking about exciting programs we are planning for 2016.

Your club officers for this coming year were elected at Founders’ Day as follows:President: Jim Falgout (incumbent)Vice President: David RobertsonTreasurer: Richard Solomon (incumbent)Secretary: Wendy Shoffit (incumbent)

Here it comes . . . YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU! Come join the fun! You will be glad you did.

Mavs of the MonthAs I mentioned earlier, our Rally Program has been

revived. The program takes time and passion to have a successful rally. Thanks to two of our members who took on this challenge and made it very successful. Don Se-bert and George Luxbacher have done a great job and deserve sharing Mav of the Month honors.

Please help us to keep growing!

President Jim Falgout [email protected]

Jim joined Maverick Region in August,

2008. He drives a 2003 996, which is

the third Porsche he has owned. Jim

enjoys attending Maverick Region

social and driving events.

Vice President Gareth Maurice C 817-821-2940 [email protected]

Gareth still remembers the cover of the car magazine that drew him into a lifetime of loving cars. He spent many afternoons riding his bike as a young kid to the local newsstand to buy and read everything he could. He now owns a Midnight Blue 911S and enjoys driving it in wonderful Texas!

Secretary Wendy Shoffit C 972-977-9821

[email protected] and husband James joined Maverick Region in 1997, when their daughter was only 9 months old. Jasmine is now 18. They own 3 Porsches including a 1978 911SC as a dedicated racecar, which she enjoys autocrossing. Her daily driver is a 2016 Cayman GT4. She also serves as the PCA National Newsletter Chair.

Treasurer Richard Solomon C 903-530-8281 [email protected]

Richard joined Maverick Region in 2012 when he fulfilled a 30+ year dream to own his first (of many) 911, a 2009 Silver Carrera! Although fairly new to the club, he is excited about being more involved and meeting more Porsche fanatics!

Gimme a Minute: November Board MeetingBy Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary November 4, 2015

The meet-ing began at 6:59 pm.

President Jim Fal-gout announced our Region would again participate in the Club Race

at COTA in Austin in collaboration with Lone Star and Hill Country Re-gions next year. He also presented the Treasurer’s report. The club is in good financial standing. We have nearly $159K available with some Slipstream ad revenue and sponsor-ship money due.

Jim also presented the Member-ship report. We had another record-breaking month, and currently have 1616 primary and 2524 total mem-bers, up 27 for both primary and total members.

Safety Chair Joe McGlohen needs all chairs to submit paperwork and work with him. He explained the necessity of following the Region Procedures Manual closely, and is working to set up a meeting early in 2016 to discuss issues that need fix-ing. He later stated he would like all paperwork submitted electronically, if possible, and wants computer equipment to archive them. David Robertson made a motion to autho-rize up to $300 to spend on two 1 TB hard drives. Motion was seconded by Don Sebert. Motion passed.

Bill Orr mentioned he helped cre-ate the Rennsport Reunion slide-show for display at the Founders’ Day banquet.

Social Chair Tracy Robertson is ready for Founders’ Day. Phyllis Gallegos will be helping out. She needs more people to sign up. She has been working hard on the silent auction with help from others. The All Member Party is set for Satur-day, January 23 at Hackberry Creek Country Club in Irving. We will also continue having board meetings at Hackberry next year.

Editor Jim Hirsch is again increas-ing the number of Slipstreams being printed to accommodate our growth (up to 1800). He’ll be contributing articles for “From the Regions” for Panorama. He is working on calen-dars and directories for sale with a Nov 23 deadline. Tracy Robertson made a motion to pre-order 75 di-rectories for sale. Linda Bambina seconded. Motion passed. Chris Ta-bor made a motion to pre-order 50 calendars for sale. Seconded by Ed Mullenix. Motion passed.

Tech Session Chair Ed Mullenix is planning an event on Saturday, January 16 for a Boxster front sus-pension session. He might have another session in March about DE tech inspections. More details to fol-low on both events.

Rally Chair Don Sebert said that the Rally to the Spirits was a big hit, with 27 cars participating. Every-one had a great time and had lots of costumes to judge. Had 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for the rally finishes and costume contest. He is open to sug-gestions for future events.

Phyllis and Jim Gallegos are look-ing forward to volunteering and have suggested creating a volunteer core database for people who can help out in small ways.

PR chair Linda Bambina is step-ping back to let Brenda Dranow step forward in her place. She is fin-

ishing up by wrangling articles and providing lights for Founders’ Day. She encourages volunteering, even for the smallest tasks that help for larger events.

Brenda Dranow is learning from Linda and proofed her first Slip-stream while monitoring the pro-cess. Husband Greg also helped the club out by leading a group during the last Sunday drive.

Monthly Social Chair Stephanie Ho is working on the event at the Hilton Garden Inn for a sort of Thanksgiv-ing celebration. It’s the last social event of the year.

DE Chair Chris Tabor is working on the last DE of the year in conjunc-tion with the Club Race. He has set dates for next year’s DEs, with the first one being Feb. 27-28. He’ll be writing an article for Slipstream and wants to have an Intro to the Track day, perhaps during lunchtime at one regular event. He suggested we have another Sunday drive event end there.

DE/CR Registrar Wendy Shoffit re-ported that we have over 50 signed up for the Club Race and nearly that many for the DE. It should be a great weekend. The monthly lunches con-tinue to be popular.

Jim Falgout finished by announc-ing that November’s Mav of the Month is Don Sebert for his excel-lent rally program. Don shared his award with our other rally meister, George Luxbacher. Meeting was ad-journed at 8:16 PM.

Other members in attendance were David Robertson, Cindy Bliss, and Mike Brodigan.

Anniversaries: December

Page 12: December 2015 - Published by the Maverick Region Porsche Club ...

I remember Ed being called “Mr. Good-

wrench” when all those TV com-mercials came out in the mid-80s. He had already

established his reputation as a 356 and early 911 guru for Maverick Region, at all the War Bonnet Tech Sessions up in Oklahoma, and even with National events as a member of PCA’s Technical Committee featured in Panorama. I remember being astounded when he literally “laid his hands” on an ailing engine and quickly diagnosed the problem from the sound and feel of the en-gine. He is the only person I have ever known who carries carefully pre-determined tools and Porsche PARTS in his cars at all times for helping someone who breaks down on a tour, a rally, driving event, or even at the Porsche Parade! The “Good” in Goodwrench has a much wider meaning when you are talk-ing about this amazingly kind and helpful man. He is also a fantastic TEACHER and is always willing to take the time to explain the prob-lem or the engineering behind your particular Porsche situation.

Interestingly enough, Ed WAS a High School Industrial Arts teacher for seven years in Ohio. He loved hot rodding and all that entails: racing,

improving engines, fixing engines, and helping others do the same. At the time, Ed had a very HOT 1937 Ford, and was enjoying some “trash talk” with a friend who owned a ’59 356A Coupe. Ed recalls he was more than PO’ed when that “little piece of you-know-what” managed to beat him on the wonderful back roads of Southern Ohio -- actually, he was impressed! Fast forward a few years to 1967 and the story takes a turn to-ward Ed joining his first PCA group, where he met and learned from Chuck Stoddard! Eventually he and Al Zim (his college roommate and frat brother) came to Texas, and many of you know the story of that early partnership.

Speaking of stories, Ed has so many interesting stories that he needs to write a book!

Here’s a very short list of stories that Ed and I decided to call

“Life by the Numbers”:

• 5 minute fan belt story in “Vic” on the Extraterrestrial Hwy at 125mph

• 7 tickets in 1 ½ years story

• 19: Granddaughter Marissa’s age when Grampa discovered her No Fear/Lead Foot DNA!

• 356-1970s His first race car at Road Atlanta, TWS and other tracks

• 911-2015 His semi-retirement project for CVAR-Vintage Rac-ing

Yes, you read that correctly. Ed has sold Mayo Performance and is OF-FICALLY in Semi-Retirement. That means he only works at the shop three days a week! The rest of the time he’ll be preparing a 1970 911S he affectionately calls Methuselah for CVAR.

He may also take some time to ex-plore all kinds of places he hasn’t

had time to visit before. I overheard him talking about seeing the other side of Grand Canyon and also going on a Canadian Train Vacation from Toronto to Vancouver! I fully expect him to continue, if not increase, his involvement in all the Porsche Na-tional and Parade groups that he is so well-respected for:

Concours d’Elegance Head Judge, Panorama’s Technical Committee go-to person for 1964-1973 911s and all 914s; Tech Quiz Consultant as well as the writer of Parade Tech Quizzes in 2004 (Fort Worth) & 2009 (Keystone, CO). Ed was also one of the Founding Fathers of a group called the “Early 911S Reg-istry.” He currently holds the title of Texas Region Advisor. His Gulf blue and orange 1967 911S was fea-tured on the Summer Edition cover of ESSES magazine. There was a matching story Ed wrote about their annual Hill Country Rally of almost 100 911S models.

Here’s a list of Ed’s cars, special names and all:

1967 911S: “VIC” (for Vic Elford)

1970 911S: “METHUSELAH”

1971 911T: “SLIME”

1972 911S: “ELVIRA”

1972 911S: “ESTHER”

1976 914: “KILLER”

Being involved with so many of the oldie-but-goodie models, Ed can barely walk ten feet at any car-related event without being stopped by a fan or someone seeking advice from this walking-car-man-ual for early 911 and 914 models. 12 December

Where has the time gone?

Can anyone be-lieve that it is De-cember already? The air is cooler, the ominous threat

of winter storms loom on the hori-zon, and Santa is busy filling various Pelicanparts.com orders for all the Porsches across the world. This time of year has always been very special for my family. This year happens to be immensely special as my wife and I will be celebrating our son’s first Christmas! I hope all Mavericks will have a great Holiday Season and get exactly what they and their cars want for Christmas. As for me, I would like nothing more than to find the Grinch that hit my car back-ing out of a parking spot a couple months ago—though I will settle for a signed and notarized letter from Santa stating that he filled the cul-prit’s stocking with enough coal to fill a Peruvian mine!

All joking aside, getting to the point where I could shed my anger and think optimistically took quite a long time. I spent many nights thinking about my 914’s body panels, money, time, and how I was going to fix my problems. I still jump up to look out the window whenever I hear a strange clunk outside, but my situ-ation has definitely gotten better. Now, I would love to say that I took the 914 into a body shop, payed “x” amount of money, and came out with an immaculate concours-worthy car. Though ideal, this is not what I decided to do.

First of all, upon further inspec-tion, the dent wasn’t all that bad. Al-though the metal had been pushed far into the wheel well, the natural lips and seams of the body panels were not affected. This meant that with the right tools and a little inge-nuity, I could easily pop the metal back out myself. I obtained a set of dent-pulling suction cups (the ones that you might have seen on late night infomercials) from a coworker and started pulling the metal back out one Saturday after I got out of work. Amazingly, the largest dent, located just behind the driver’s side door, popped out almost instantly.

Elated with joy I moved on further back to the quarter panel. With one hand pulling the suction cup attached to the car and my other hand gently tapping the back of the sheet metal with a rubber mallet, I watched in amazement as little by lit-tle the quarter panel took its former shape. After about 30 minutes of shaping metal and about two hours of inspecting at various angles, I felt satisfied with my work.

The main reason I took this route, as opposed to sending the car to a

body shop, is because most of the car needs body work done to it. The 41-year-old paint is peeling, cracking, and losing its clear coat in various areas. The two dents from the Grinch only added a few chips and a hair line fracture in the paint, so if I wanted to take the car in for body work I would want the ENTIRE car overhauled, not just one panel. The amount of money and time to achieve this ideal and pristine car is just out of my realm of possibili-ties—at least for now.

The most important thing for me regarding my Porsches is to keep them running. I am more con-

cerned about mechanical maintenance and upgrades than I am aesthetics. Eventu-ally (when I make my mil-lions in the stock market!) all my cars will get to flaunt the bodies they deserve. But for now I am content with brakes that stop and engines that roar.

Again, I want to wish every-one a pleasant and safe Holi-day Season. See you next year, and as always Wrench on Mavs!

We had the final PCA / ER Au-tocross Sunday, November 8th. Crisp and cool but a

very nice day overall.

This was the annual Guns and Hoses charity event. The Garland Police and Fire Fighters send teams of 4 each to drive fully loaded Police Cars and

race for individual as well as team awards. Competitors can buy back cones they hit for $5.00 each, make donations on site, and the joint club can donate all profits from the event, this year including 100% of the PAX payouts earned by the top competitors. The estimated total was $3,000 this year.

Over 100 competitors made six of-ficial runs on a fast and challenging

course on the rolling hills of the Lone Star Park site which was set up by Multi-Time SCCA autocross Nation-al Champion, David Whitener. Full event results can be seen on autocross.com

Thirty-three PCA members participated in the Auto-cross Program in 2015.

The Porsche 2015 Rapide Pax Season Points are shown below. This is used for season awards at the January

Awards Dinner, best 7 events count, date TBD as of this writing. On the bottom of the online PAX sheet is the overall MAVPCA PAX based year-end rankings for the top 7 events. These are used for Porsche Male and Female Driver of the Year Awards. For 2015, the Top Male Driver is Mark Schnoerr and the Top Female Driver is Sigrid Schnoerr.

The final Sat-urday/Sun-day Drive

of the 2015 season was held on Satur-day, October 17. Over 50 Porsches assembled in the parking lot of the

Walmart Supercenter in Lake Worth bright and early that morning, poised for a lively jaunt through the backroads of the southwest corner of the Metroplex.

Neill Flood put together a 100-mile route that stretched from Lake Worth, through Weatherford, across the Brazos River into Lipan, through Bluff Dale and Paluxy, be-fore ambling into the Town Square in Granbury.

We couldn’t have ordered better weather for the drive. At the 9:30

start, the ambient air temperature was slightly brisk, but as the day and the drive progressed, the tem-perature rose into the mid-70s, with bright sunshine throughout. Perfect top-down weather!

The first leg of any drive is typically dedicated to escaping the conges-tion of the suburban sprawl. This drive was no exception. It wasn’t un-til we rolled into the sleepy town of Lipan that the roads really opened up and our Porsches could properly breathe, and the drivers could fully enjoy the twisties. Lipan was also the site of our rest stop. One can only imagine what the people manning the local gas station/convenience store thought when 50 Porsches and 100 people descended upon their establishment; most of them patiently waiting to use the one rest-room at the station!

It was almost 1:00 when the first drive group entered downtown Granbury, which is always packed with peo-ple visiting the Square on the weekends. Parking dem-onstrated the theory of the “survival of the fittest.” Four dining choices surrounding the Square were offered to the Mavericks: Babe’s Chicken, Ketzler’s Schnitzel Haus and Biergarten, Farina’s Wine Bar & Café, and the Eighteen Ninety Grille and Lounge. I had already eaten at Ketzler’s at the pre-drive (great schnitzel), so this time we elected to dine at Farina’s with a group of fellow Maverick friends (great lasagna).

Shout outs go to the drive leaders Neill Flood, John Harvey, Jon Glover, and Greg Dranow, along with sweeps Voy Mitchell and Mary Anderson. Thanks guys!

We are working on finalizing the schedule for next year, with potential drives to the Mitas Hill Winery in McKin-ney, the Revolver Brewery in Granbury, to MotorSport Ranch for parade laps on their most excellent road course, an East Texas tour, and possibly a revisit to Rancho Sereno, and the Bluebonnet Tour. Stay tuned to mavpca.org and Slipstream for updates.

Porsches and Costumes: The “Driving to the Spirits” Rally

It was a couple of weeks before Hal-loween. My husband had been in-vited out of town to play roadie for

a buddy’s band. I was left to my own devices. Then it was there, in my email inbox: “Driving to the Spirits Rally, Oc-tober, 31 - Halloween.” The Maverick Region of PCA would ensure that my

Halloween would be special! The details had us meet-ing at the Frisco Heritage Museum to wind, more like find, our way to the Witherspoon Distillery in Lewisville. To make things more interesting, in addition to rally awards being given, participants were encouraged to dress up with an award for best costume.

It took me longer to find my phone than to actually send the text to ask my best girlfriend, Tammy, if she was up for a run, in costume no less. She called me right back saying, “yes, I’d love to,” but what was this costume requirement? I replied with, “what costume do you already have?” and I’d come up with some-thing to complement. She would be the Great Pumpkin, a.k.a. naviga-tor, to my Linus Van Pelt, of Charles Schultz “Peanuts” greatness. She had been my navigator for the Texas Hill Coun-try Boxstoberfest and reminded me that this was NOT a timed event. She had experienced that side of things, and she didn’t have an appreciation for it.

As what seems to often be a prelude to these gimmick rallies, a good soaking rain included localized flooding in the hours right before our scheduled start. I feared the attendance would be down due to the rain, but as we arrived in the parking lot, we joined 30+ Porsches of every model and variety with costumed characters. The drivers’ meeting began in the light rain and we were given instructions with a glossary of terms. Then the questions were handed out. Tammy and I pored through those pages like they were clues to the location of the Holy Grail. Questions as simple as the past and present population of a tiny town to more clever, and vague, observations such as what several points along our drive had in common.

The brief opportunity to review and commit all the questions to memory was over and it was time to start

our engines. Shortly -- very shortly -- after leaving the parking lot, we encountered the first answer to our list of questions. This, of course, caused me to slow my car to a crawl along the main street of Frisco, a very unreal-istic motion for my car or for me. So after a few blocks I rejoined the recommended speed limit range and we were off to find more answers to the clues.

Our route instructions were simple to follow. The first half had the distances between route changes provided. The route took us through some beautiful areas of Col-lin and Denton counties, McKinney, Celina, Weston, Prosper, Little Elm, The Colony, and Lewisville.

Around the middle of things, there was a small unfore-seen route change. As we entered the small hamlet of Celina, TX, the town square was cut off for a festival. Tammy had to adjust her navigation antenna and find her bearings, and then we headed onward. As we ap-proached the designated course rest stop, we saw one of our group participants turning out of the parking lot. It was my inclination to pass it up because it wasn’t necessary for us to stop. However, Tammy stayed on top of things, encouraged me to stay the course and drive into the parking lot. As we discovered, skipping this step would have taken us in a wrong direction. My trusty navigator kept us on track.

Along the way, we were exhilarated as we found answers to questions and felt confident with our progress. That was until we reached the end of the route, turned in our answer sheet, ordered a wonderful Witherspoon bever-age, and began to socialize with other participants. We quickly learned we had some earnest competition, and we chuckled about how serious we took ourselves. Group photos were taken, voting for costumes completed, ques-tion sheets tallied, and awards given. As we walked out into the late afternoon, we realized the sun was finally shining and were a little sad that it was over.

We will do this ride again and if we win, place, or get lost, it’ll all be for the thrill of the ride . . . the Porsche ride, that is.

Rennscape: 5600 miles in a Cayman GT4

Rennscape. Never heard of

the term? That’s because James and I made it up. Early this year when we realized Rennsport

Reunion V and PCA’s Escape were on back-to-back weekends, we had the dream of doing BOTH events . . . thus “Rennscape” was created. In February we dreamed even bigger -- we put a deposit down for a Cay-man GT4. What if? What if we got it in time to take it to Rennscape? Wouldn’t that be something?

Months went by and no GT4. After a great deal of effort on the part of our dealership and ourselves, three days before we left on our journey, that part of the dream became a re-ality! Barely enough time to figure out how to pack two weeks’ worth of luggage into the two trunks of a Cay-man. It was no problem, though, as there was even enough space for six pairs of my shoes, a foam roller, two laptop cases, and James’ car clean-ing supplies. I know, right? James actually CLEANS cars on occasion.

Tuesday morning came and we were off! We left a day earlier than we needed to because we wanted to go through Win-slow Arizona, Death Valley, and Yosemite National Park. Along the way we saw some phenomenal scenery and took as many pictures as you would of a new infant. I guess this WAS somewhat of a replace-ment for our now away-at-college daughter, Jasmine.

We arrived in Monterey on Thurs-day and first on the agenda was a car wash. The bugs loved our car! We weren’t the only ones there from PCA. Botho Von Bose from Upper Canada (Toronto area) had driven. Wow! That was a long way. Even lon-ger than our 2000 miles.

Friday morning was a bevy of ex-citement! We are lucky to know David Bunch, the coordinator of the PCA corral at Laguna Seca. He knew many folks would want to take a closer look at a GT4 in person, so he sent us a special Island Corral parking pass. Awesome! It was fun watching people ooh and aah over it. There still aren’t many in the US. (There were twelve 918 Spyders on the Island, but only one GT4!)

While we were volunteering in the PCA hospitality area, Tom and Sandy Provasi (organizers of the PCA Werks Reunion, held during Monterey Car Week) got word that Porsche wanted a customer-owned GT4 to be driven on track by a pro driver. Maybe even Patrick Long. Were we interested? I couldn’t say yes fast enough! Waiting for more details, we went on and enjoyed walking around the paddock areas, taking it all in.

There were amazing cars on the track, including historic racecars: 917s, 356 roadsters and speedsters, 911s, 914s, 908s, 910s, 906s, 935s,

Cup Cars, 962s, RSRs, and on and on. There was even a class just for PCA Club Racers that included sev-eral Maverick members (Pierce Mar-shall, Niels Meissner, Siggi Meissner, Bill Smith, and Pat Heptig). You would think the historic big dollar cars would be basically taking pa-rade laps around, but no . . . they were RACING! Oh, and did I men-tion there was a 919 there? The Le-Mans-winning car wasn’t racing, but would periodically go out on track for demonstration laps. O.M.G.

There were hundreds of cars out there lined up in the Porsche Cor-rals, all arranged by model. It was an amazing display! An even finer display was the tent of historic cars. It felt like every car that had some significance in Porsche history was there for us to drool on, at least when they weren’t out racing on the track. Maverick Member Billy Hibbs was invited to bring his 908 to show, driven by the legendary Vic Elford.

When we weren’t watching the rac-ing or ogling the cars, there were vendors all around selling cool Porsche merchandise, parts, servic-es, and souvenirs. We saw so many friends there it was unreal! We are truly blessed to know so many won-derful people.

Saturday morning was our second opportunity to take it all in. We were

Breathtaking! Oh, and the scenery too

James, the GT4, and Winslow, AZ

finally able to use our purchased special hospitality suite passes, al-lowing us access to nice air condi-tioned suites where we could get food, drinks, and watch racing from the front straight and pit row. It was a cool place to meet up with friends and recharge our batteries. (I highly recommend it for future events.)

Then Saturday afternoon every-thing really started ramping up. You might remember my mentioning Patrick Long? Well, we made the right connections and got to the right place at about 3:30. A repre-sentative from Jeff Zwart’s team let us know that one from a list of racers would be driving our car, as well as several others’ cars who were asked to join. (This was the same Jeff Zwart who films most of Porsche’s commercials, who also won the Pike’s Peak International Hillclimb in a GT3 Cup car, and does art pho-tography for Panorama). The antici-pation was almost too much to take.

The next thing we knew, Mark Web-ber (former Formula 1 and current World Endurance Championship driver for Porsche) was coming up to OUR CAR to take a few laps! Jeff Zwart would be sitting in the passen-ger seat, interviewing the drivers for a commercial. What? Too cool! With a few technology pointers of the car from James, Mark and Jeff were off. A few laps later, they returned. Want-ing to capitalize on this phenom-enal opportunity, we asked Mark to sign the underside of the hood. He graciously agreed and even took pictures with us. What a day! But

wait… there’s more?!?! NEXT, Sir Derek Bell (Five time LeMans win-ner) climbed into the driver’s seat for a few laps and signed the hood. Lather, Rinse, Repeat: 2015 LeMans winning 919 driver, Earl Bamber, was next to pilot the car and sign. Finally, legendary driver Jochen Mass (for-merly of Formula 1, as well as rac-ing 956s and a 962 with Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx, and Bob Wollek) took a few laps and signed! We enjoyed a few minutes to talk with a friendly Jochen and his lovely wife, Bettina. Sadly, Patrick Long was not lucky enough to drive the car around the track, but was happy to take photos with us and sign, as was Jeff Zwart. In the meantime, James and I were about to pass out from the excite-ment! We were able to share the mo-ments with friends Robyn and Travis Howard and Carey Spreen, who also gave us some great photos to com-memorate the occasion. Talk about a once in a lifetime experience!!! We were on Cloud Nine!

The next day our feet still had not touched the ground as we hap-pily recounted the story of the prior day’s adventure. Surprisingly, our luck still had not run out. PCA had a series of drivers and important Porsche employees come to their tent to give talks and presentations about various topical issues. One of the scheduled times had Porsche GT boss and creator of the GT4, An-dreas Preuninger, talking about the GT program. So, what did he need? Our GT4, of course! So, we carefully drove it into the tent so he could use

it as a display. He gave an entertain-ing speech and answered all kinds of questions from the crowd. Our favorite question and answer was re-garding the lack of a sunroof in the GT4, to which he replied, “I don’t need a sunroof, so why would I put one in?!?” Love his German humor. At the end of the talk, he also gen-erously signed our hood. As a side note: does anyone know how to pre-serve Sharpie graffiti on paint?

Sadly, our time at Rennsport Re-union V had to come to an end. As we drove away from all of our friends and the most phenom-enal event we’ve ever been to, we couldn’t help but wonder what in the world could ever top what we just experienced? We were at the last Rennsport (IV) in Monterey, have been to 15 Parades, to the Porsche factory, and the Porsche museum twice. NOTHING will keep us from the next Rennsport Reunion! You never know what could happen at the next one. Magic is REAL!

20 December

After our magical time at Renns-port, we drove our now famous Cayman GT4 northeastward to the next leg of our journey. Having experienced breathtaking scenery in Death Valley and Yosemite, we wanted to add Yellowstone to our list of adventures. We spent nearly an entire day taking in as much Yellow-stone as we possibly could. It is abso-lutely amazing. I’d never been there

and had to see Old Faithful. Along the way we saw more bison than I ever have before. When we stopped to have lunch and bison burgers were on the menu, it just felt wrong. Mov-ing on . . .

We ended up taking the Northwest exit out of the park and, thanks to the recommendation of Maverick member Charles Armstrong, we drove on the Beartooth Highway (up to Red Lodge, Montana). OH.MY. GOODNESS! What a phenomenal route that was, with seemingly end-less switchbacks, high elevation lakes, and scenery that took your breath away! Some claim it’s the best drive in America. We couldn’t agree more. The next day we drove on to Rapid City, South Dakota by way of Montana and North Dakota. For those of you looking at a map, you might notice ND is slightly out of the way. How else are a couple of Texans going to pick up ND as a state? Gotta get there somehow and a specific trip there seems unlikely. But I digress . . .

We arrived in Rapid City and got checked in to Escape. We found out we weren’t the only ones crazy enough to do both Rennsport V and Escape! Probably a few dozen

folks managed that trip, including Maverick Bob Aines!

We got up the next day (Thursday) and had our own adventure driving to Devil’s Tower, Sturgis, Lead and Deadwood. Cool places for sure. The next order of business was another car wash. That night was a people’s choice car show and we didn’t want to be embar-rassed by the thousand bugs on the front. While three GT4s were signed up for Es-cape, ours was the only one to make it. The car drew a crowd at times and we were happy to tell our story behind the signatures (and hide the Sharpie from any erstwhile graffiti artists). We voted for our favorites and enjoyed the nice welcome din-ner in the park.

On Friday was a planned group drive to Crazy Horse and Mount Rushmore. The only problem? Fog had descended, erasing all evidence that either place existed. While we

enjoyed the film, museum, gift shop, and delicious Indian Tacos at Crazy Horse, we never saw the monument. So, we skipped Rushmore that day and instead went to Bear Country. I

wanted – nay -- NEEDED to see bears this trip, so we did. Fun place and a nice distraction from the annoy-ing fog. Making lemonade, I guess. That night was free, so we went with friends to a cool bar and pizza res-taurant in Rapid City for dinner.

Saturday was still foggy, so we head-ed out again on our own in another direction. This time we went to the Badlands. Another place that was amazing and dramatically different from anything we’d seen before. The story behind it is very cool if you have time to look it up. On our way back we stopped at the world fa-mous Wall Drug in Wall, SD. It’s like no place else I’ve ever been, com-plete with a giant Jackalope statue you can sit on. We enjoyed lunch and the best cake donuts I’ve ever eaten (another interesting story be-hind the place)!

That night was the final dinner, for which we had been asked to park our car in the banquet room along with a lovely new Macan and gorgeous 356. Something for everyone! More car cleaning beforehand, but it was worth it. The dinner was fun and we were honored to accept the trophy for people’s choice in the Cayman series! Might be the only time in our lives to ever win something like it!

The next morning, with somber hearts that another event had end-ed, we left the hotel and thought we’d give Mount Rushmore one more chance. We drove there in patchy fog, parked in wispy fog, and walked to the viewing area hope-ful it might clear. James was ready to give up, but I suggested we visit areas of the museum so I could at least know some history. As we were about ready to leave, the fog finally cleared and we were able to see it! Our luck had returned.

Our route home took us right through Wall, SD again, so of course we had to stop for more donuts. Al-though we were ready to be home, we had to take a route that briefly

Old Faithful and bison on the way

to the PCA Escape

Devil’s Tower and the GT4

Fog was a constant companion for much of Escape

took us through Minnesota (see reasoning above), Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas to my favorite Subway in the world in Waldron, AR. I can get anything I want there . . . it’s like I own the place!

Finally we reached home after 17 states in 14 days and 5664 miles. The car is fully broken in now. Through-out the journey it performed flaw-lessly. From the scalding hot 116° temps in Death Valley to a frost-cov-ered 24° in West Yellowstone, MT,

the car remained perfectly temper-ate. People asked me if it was com-fortable. I told them it was bumpy, noisy, and a bit tight . . . but it was a heck of a ride! You know what you’re getting into when you climb in the passenger side. Oh, and for those of you scoring at home, in the 94.5 hours it took us for this entire jour-ney, I drove for exactly ONE hour. Not because I couldn’t or wouldn’t -- it’s because James is an only child and is NOT good at sharing his toys. That’ll change . . .

We didn’t know that this would be the last PCA “Escape,” until they

announced it at the final banquet. It turns out they’ve renamed it to “Treffen North America” and will be soon doing two per year. Whatever you want to call it, it’s a blast to go and see scenery that you might not get to see, living in Texas and all! James has now visited 49 states and I have 48. Now, how many hours will it take to get to Alaska (via Oregon) so I can catch up?

The Tub Club: Happy Birthday, Dr. Porsche

The Tub Club went on a drive

through back country roads to the Veldhuizen Cheese Shoppe near Dublin, TX

for our “Drive Your 356 Day” event on September 19, which is also Ferry Porsche’s birthday. Bob Mor-ris organized the drive, and many of the Tub Club members from the Fort Worth/Dallas area joined him on this adventure. Our caravan of cars wound its way through rolling, tree-covered countryside on its way to our two destinations: the Veldhui-zen farm and the Loco-Coyote Grill, a picturesque restaurant hidden away on one of the back roads in the area.

The Veldhuizens pride themselves on the fact they use only natural methods of both feeding the cows providing the milk for their cheeses, and making only artisan raw milk cheese. The whole family is involved in making the 15 different types of cheeses produced.

Stuart and Connie Veldhuizen took the Tub Club members on a guided tour of their farm, and we thoroughly enjoyed learning about their cheese-making process while watching one of their cheeses being made and visiting the places the cheese wheels were stored while they were aging. Everything during this process was done by hand, from taking the cheese curd out of the vat, to coating the cheese

during the aging process, to turning the cheese wheels twice daily. We can all attest to the fact that their method produces a terrific cheese, as we had the opportunity to sample the different varieties!

What a wonderful way to celebrate September 19, the Drive Your 356 Day! Both the humans and the cars had a great time!

As you recall in the Octo-ber issue, I

was busy prepping a Porsche 928 for the Carmel con-cours event. This month takes you through an adven-

ture they make movies about: four men over 50, in a van, for a 1500-mile road trip. My, how you get to know each other! Roger Tyson, owner; Sean Ratts, mechanic; Jim Mayzurk, photographer; and of course me the OCD’ tailer.

Friday, Aug. 7, we traveled 800 miles via Route 66, staying the night in Gallup, NM. A rather uneventful day, but we pushed hard to play the next day. Saturday, we played tourist with our first stop in Winslow, AZ. We took pictures, bought T-shirts, and literally we literally tried to “Take it Easy,” “Standing on the cor-ner in Winslow AZ” paying tribute to the Eagles.

From Winslow, we traveled to Me-teor Crater, AZ, where 50,000 years ago a meteor crashed into the earth leaving a hole a mile wide and eigh-teen stories deep. Scientists have been exploring the site for years, digging five stories into the crater for research. NASA even used the site to simulate a moon walk.

Off to the Grand Canyon. On our way, it was incredible to see how trees were literally burned on one side but not the other from wildfires. As we

continued our journey towards Needles, CA, the smoke from the wildfires had essentially blocked the sun.

Entering California, we thought, “how cool to take the Pacific Coast Highway (CA SR1), ocean to the left and land to the right!” Little did we realize that the weight of the trailer with the van was too much for the hills and turns -- our brakes were actually smoking! Turning back we took the 101 into Carmel.

Monday was a day to settle in and get ready for the event. Looking for a car wash, I went to work.

After cleaning up three days of dirt and grime it was time for some car guy fun, and what a better place than Baja Cantina & Grill with two dozen of your 928 Porsche buds.

Tuesday: Showtime! Our class was front engine, water cooled, including models 924/944/968/928. There were a dozen cars in the class, nine of which were 928s. Although we

had a good showing, we didn’t win. First place went to Mark Woodsma with his white OB (original body) 928 from San Jose, CA. Mark’s engine was immaculate. He had just re-zinced every nut, bolt and washer.

Although we were there for the show, the highlight of my day was showing my eight-day detail to long-time friend Richard Griot, who as it happened started Griot’s Garage in this exact place 25 years ago.

After the judging, I walked over to the Meacham Auction booth and met Dana Meacham, founder of the auction. This was no ordinary event. In Carmel fashion, the head-liner was a 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera originally owned by Steve McQueen. I had a chance to meet the current owner Mike Regalia and Steve’s son Chad McQueen. The Porsche sold for $1,950,000, with proceeds benefiting the Boy’s Re-public charity, where Steve grew up.

Wednesday we loaded up the van and headed toward home. Our trip would not be complete without stop-ping by the general store at Black-wells Corner. Where, you ask? The location where the famous James Dean made his last stop before crashing his 550 Spyder, nicknamed “Little Bastard.” The store has since changed its name, adding a Forever Young Cafe and fudge factory with murals to keep his memory alive.

At the risk of alienating some of our most passionate Mav members, this month I’m thinking about the unimportance of speed

Admit it, one of the first items many of us look for when reading an announcement or review of a new car is the 0-60 time and/or the Nurburgring lap time.

Not that there is anything wrong with an enthusiast using those as a barometer of possible car satisfaction, but in our Porsche-centric world, there is also a pretty close alignment with price and performance measures as mentioned above. In other words, if you want the bragging rights for 0-100 mph, simply get out the bigger checkbook.

I’m reminding you this month to simply enjoy the driving experience in your Porsche. In other words, move your mantra to the motto: “Life is too short to drive boring cars”. Whether it’s the sublime way your Porsche handles every corner and curve on your commute and trip to the grocery store, or the sound of that fabulous engine as it revs past 4,000rpm (only in first gear when in town unfortunately), let your smile grow wider each and every time you twist that key.

Pure driving pleasure is primarily an ethereal thing, which is why every Porsche gets it right. Whether or not a car is enjoyable to drive is much more than its performance prowess.

So, get out this month and drive your Porsche as often as possible to get that never-ending feeling of having purchased the most responsive and best driving vehicle available, no matter which year and model you own.

On a Mav update note, as our club gets ready to put a bow on 2015, please welcome two members to our team of volunteers.

Joe McGlohen is taking over the helm as our safety director for all club programs that involve a measure of risk when participating.

And, long-time volunteer extraordinaire, Linda Bambina, is going to take a brief respite from formal duties and turn over the “content wrangler” title for Slipstream to Brenda Dranow. Brenda shares that her background in wrangling people together stems from over 20 years of experience of getting doctors, lawyers, engineers, CPAs, etc. all in the same place, and on the same page. Expect to hear from Brenda as she rustles up content for each issue of Slipstream.

On a final note, I apologize for the limited number of photographs in some of the articles in this issue. We had a lot of content to squeeze into 40 pages, so please take advantage of the included links to see the entire collection of images in full-color online.

Happy Holidays to all of our Mav members. We look forward to a great 2016!
