It’s already December and I’m still unpacking from my trip to Creekside Gospel Music Convention…where has the time gone? The stores are filled with red and green and lots of tinsel. At least, I’m presuming they are but I haven’t done my shopping yet so I’m just guessing. I am a last-minute guy because in my mind nothing comestogether until the evening of the 24th, just like in White Christmas. In the movie, nothing works right until the last minute and suddenly the Major has an inn-full of paying guests, Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney are singing sweetly and the snow is falling just like a Christmas card. That’s what I hope my Christmas season is like. Often I’m going full-steam ahead until the very last moment when I slide into the pew for the Christmas Eve service and start singing, “Silent Night” in the candlelight.

This season I want to take a few moments to stop and take in the good moments, breathe in the crisp air and really see the beauty of the colors and the lights. I want to savor the moments with family and friends, as they may never happen quite this way again. I want to enjoy opening packages from all over the nation, re-read the Christmas cards and remember every one who has blessed my life this year.

Many of the artists and industry friends that we have connected with this year are mentioned in this edition of SGN Scoops so I hope you have time to read through the whole magazine. Remember to check our website for the latest news as well! If your life is a blur in the month of December, take a few moments to slow down, grab a latte and read our uplifting, encouraging and informative features. Savor SGN Scoops this season!

More than any of this, Christmas is the time to rejoice in the birth of the Christ Child, our Savior and our King. Jesus didn’t remain a child, He didn’t remain on the Cross or in the grave; He sits now at the right-hand of the Father, talking to Him about you and me! What an incredible thought! For God so loved the world that He GAVE His only begotten Son, that whosoever should believe in Him should not perish but have eternal life. God’s gift to us is an abundant life that starts here and now and continues on into eternity. Take a moment this Christmas to slow down and let the wonder of this gift seep into your soul and your heart. Let the beauty of this Silent Night bring light into your world.

Merry Christmas!

Letter From The Editor

By Rhonda Frye

Merry Christmas, everybody! It seems each time my eyes land upon a Nativity scene, I can’t help but think how God sent Jesus on a mission to serve- not BE served! When I see the babe in a manger it reminds me how Jesus left His comfort zone, His home, and His rank when He took His position in the world as a limited human. Jesus laid aside His glory and His rights to come to earth to rescue me. What an act of service! I certainly didn’t deserve it. I don’t fully understand why, but I sure am grateful He did!

Although I don’t fully understand why, the simple answer is love…. I’ve been sitting here 15 minutes and I still don’t know what to say about God’s love. It is not so simple after all! God demonstrates His love in countless ways, but the fact that Jesus gave up the comforts of His home to experience the discomforts of earth rattles my mind. What an enormous act of humility. Jesus’ entire life from the manger to the ascension was one filled with meekness.

The Bible records one humble act of service after another that Jesus did during His time on earth as an example and tells us to pattern our lives after Him. I’ll just be honest and say- What? Laying aside my pride, needs and rights just doesn’t come natural. Being that Jesus was also human, He was able to love and serve others with pure motives through the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank goodness, we can tap into the same power!

This Christmas as I look at the humble babe in the manger I’m challenged to swallow my pride and live a lifestyle of service. Looking at the life of Jesus, I can

see He welcomed interruptions; He met people right where they were and met whatever their need was. I’m inspired to do the same.

I promise I’m not trying to sound spiritual, but the honest prayer of my heart for the coming year is to be full of the Holy Spirit so that I can effectively serve others like Jesus did. My prayer is for God to do such a work in my heart that I’m not selective with whom I serve, but extend grace and mercy to the people He puts in my path. The only way to be filled with the Spirit is to make room for Him. I admit, my heart can get as crowded as all the Inns in Bethlehem on Christmas Eve- But to be filled with the fullness of Christ through the Holy Spirit is my greatest desire.

I sincerely wish you all a very Merry Christmas. May God speak to you through the Christmas Carols, Nativity Scenes, Scriptures, Musicals, Plays and godly conversation during the Christmas Season reminding you of why He came to earth. My prayer is for you to feel a strong urge to draw closer to Him like never before in 2014. We can accomplish so much more by the power of the Holy Spirit! May He fill our hearts with the fullness of Christ so that we can serve others in love.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

MARK YOUR CALENDARWe are still praising the Lord for a successful 2013 Creekside! Believe it or not, the planning for 2014’s convention started before we left Pigeon Forge. We are praying for God’s continued blessing as we strive to reach more people for Christ and introduce our music to new fans. We are thankful for the growth we’ve seen thus far and are confident that “He that began a good work will complete it!” The dates for 2014 are: November 3rd, 4th, & 5th and the location will remain at the Smoky Mountain Con-vention Center, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Stay tuned to our website and social media outlets for more news and information.

DIAMOND AWARDS VOTINGWe are thrilled with each passing year at the level of participation in the Diamond Awards voting process. Although we surpassed voting records this past year, we still are frequently asked how artists are nominat-ed. Please help us spread the word that the Diamond Awards are fan-based from the nomination process all the way until voters choose the winners. The first round of voting opens January 6, 2014. At the time, everyone is on equal ground. At the end of round one, we take the top ten names in each category, compile a list, and then we open round two. At the closing of round two voting, we then take the top five names and then the winners are picked from those choices. Again- the fans choose the nominees and winners, so let your voice be heard! Please remember to share the voting link on

your website and all social media outlets.

ARTIST REGISTRATIONWe’re blessed that God has allowed great relationships to evolve among our family of participating artists. Friendships have been built, business relationships have been established and for that we are grateful. Several of our artists have already reserved a booth for next year. If you would like to participate as an artist, email Rob Patz at [email protected] for registration informa-tion.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED There are numerous tasks involved in planning and ex-ecuting an event. If you would like to volunteer through various promotional activities throughout the year, or with onsite tasks during the convention, please email Rhonda at [email protected].

CREEKSIDE CARESFrom the time we first started planning our Gospel Mu-sic Convention, it was important to us to reach beyond the walls of the convention center with the good news of Christ. In 2011, we partnered with LIVE-IT, a local or-ganization in Sevierville and helped stock their commu-nity thrift store. In 2012, we teamed up with LOVE A CHILD and provided hot meals to children in Haiti. We ask that you keep us in your prayers as we seek God’s direction as we select an outreach ministry for 2014.

“Living the Abundant Life”

Our Lord Jesus, born in that manger so long ago, came to earth that we could have LIFE and “that more abundantly.” During this Christmas season and throughout the coming year, it is my prayer that the “light” of Jesus will shine brightly in each of us, and our Heavenly Father will be GLORIFIED! (Matthew 5:16) Let us sing our Christmas songs and rejoice! Our Savior is born!

A heartfelt thanks to all who have ordered “The Lady & Her Legacy.” This beautiful book makes a great Christmas gift, with more than 500 color photos of LEGENDARY singers and industry leaders, plus feature articles about historical gospel music events. Two of the pages are filled with photos from that first Creekside Gospel Music Convention in 2012. Some very special people are pictured on page 84, our esteemed publisher Rob Patz and Rhonda Frye, our multi-talented editor. Their LOVE for the gospel music family overflows in the marvelous contributions they are making to our life-changing music, and they are a part of this lady’s legacy.

Speaking of legacies, at the recent CATHEDRAL FAMILY REUNION, the Cathedral Quartet’s founders, Glen Payne and George Younce, two deceased LEGENDS of gospel music, were honored recently by five men, alumni of this revered quartet. All five of these men have made their own enormous contribution to the success of gospel music and are recognized as leaders in the industry-

-Gerald Wolfe (Greater Vision) Ernie Haase (Signature Sound) Scott Fowler (Legacy Five) Mark Trammell (Mark Trammell Quartet) and Danny Funderburk. God blessed tremendously in supplying the opportunity for me to attend this history-making event in Fort Worth, Texas, at the beautiful MacGorman Performing Arts Center on the campus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

I appreciate IMC’s Landon Beene and Brian Hudson (Hudson Management) for the invitation to this fabulous gathering of artists, media, and fans. The Cathedral Family Reunion finale on Saturday night included every member of each quartet. Spotlighting signature songs of George Younce were three stunning bass singers—Pat Barker (Mark Trammell Quartet) Paul Harkey (Signature Sound) and Matt Fouch (Legacy Five) confirming that the legacy of George Younce will be with us for many years to come. The multitude of friends there to honor

Page 11: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

the memory of Glen Payne was a reflection of the impact made by this Texas hero.

Remembering the abundance of blessings this past year, and considering that Howard and I are in our senior years, my desire is to leave a legacy of love for my family and for the gospel music family, and above all, service to our Heavenly Father. May you have abundant joy and peace in this bright season, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, our soon-coming Redeemer.www.louhildreth.com [email protected] P. O. Some of our favorite Christmas songs have amazing lyrics that we need to stop and think about at this special time of year. Gospel music artists and industry friends have taken a mo-ment to share with us their favorite lyrics from some well-known carols. Take time today to reflect on the meaning of these words and let them soak into your spirit. Merry Christmas from all of us at SGN Scoops and the Gospel music world.

My favorite line from a Christmas carol is one that people don’t always sing and sadly gets left out...it’s from “O Holy Night”: “Christ is the Lord, oh praise His Name forever, His power and glory, ever more pro-claimed.”1 – Brenda Messaros, Hearts of Faith, http://www.heartsoffaith.biz/

My favorite line from a favorite Christmas carol is from “The Little Drummer Boy” and it says: “Barumpapumpum...” Just kidding! I always thought that first verse of “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” painted a clear and vivid picture of Christ-mas to me.

“It came upon the midnight clear; that glorious song of old; from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold. Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven’s all gracious king. The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.”2 – Mark Bishop, Artist http://www.

markbishopmusic.com/

“And when you’ve kissed your little baby, you’ve kissed the face of God”3 from “Mary Did You Know” – Burrell Cross, The Ascensions http://theascensions.com/

The best line from my favorite Christmas carol “O Come Let Us Adore Him” is “You Alone Are Worthy,

“Sing We Now A Song Of Christmas”By Lorraine Walker and Rob Patz

Christ The Lord”.4– Brian Worley, Mission Quartet http://www.missionquartet.com/

“The Shepherds Prayer”: “Move me closer, move me closer, move me closer to the Child; let me see Him, let me hold His hand, move me closer to the Child.”5

The song has become to me the prayer of my heart and I think every person should be praying that for this New Year ahead. Staying close to the Christ in Christmas. – Brian Chrisagis, The Chrisagis Brothers http://www.chrisagis.com/

My favorite line of any Christmas song is “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”. As much time as we spend on the road traveling, and also due to the fact that I’m a new husband, this year will be extra special for me to get to be home! – Bryan Walker, The Perrys http://www.perrysministries.com/

My favorite line of any Christmas song is “Go tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born!”6 [Go Tell It On The Mountain] – Brenda Jean Robinson, New Desire Christian Ministries http://www.newdesire.org/

“O tidings of comfort and joy.”7 [God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen] - Tim Maze, Canaan’s Crossing http://www.canaanscrossing.com/

“The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight,”8 from “O Little Town Of Bethlehem.” – Jona-than Martin, The Martins http://www.the-martins.com/

“Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ‘til He ap-peared and the soul felt its worth”1 from O Holy Night. – Saran Chumley, The Crossland Trio https://www.facebook.com/CrosslandTrio

My favorite line is “It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”. The reason is that everyone seems so happy at Christmas time, but I wish we could be that way all year and not one time a year. We have so much to be thankful and happy about all year, not just Christmas

time! – Brenda Ann Denney, 2nd Generation Ministries http://www.2ndgenerationministries.com/

From “O Holy Night” - “Truly He Taught Us To Love One Another. His law is love and His Gospel is peace.”1 – Donna King, Artist http://www.zaneanddonnaking.com/

“What Child is This?” Line: “This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste to bring Him laud, the Babe, the Son of Mary.”9 This is hard when you have several favorites. I love Christmas music! – Michelle Cotton Drummond, The Drummond Family http://www.drummondband.com/

“Jingle Bells!” Line: “We got into a drifted bank, and we - we got up sot!”10 If it has to be spiritual, then “Chains shall He brake, for the slave is our brother” [From “O Holy Night”] would be my favorite. 1 – Pat Barker, Mark Trammell Quartet, http://www.marktram-mellministries.com/

“Joy to the world the Lord has come!”11 [From: “Joy To The World”] - Justin Crank, GloryWay Quartet http://www.glorywayquartet.com/

From Jeff Foxworthy’s song “Redneck 12 Days of Christmas”: “And some parts to a Mustang GT!”12 – Jeff Treece, Sunday Drive http://www.jefftreeceband.com/

“Oh there’s no place like home for the holidays!”13 [From: “Home For The Holidays”] – Misty Treece,

Sunday Drive http://www.jefftreeceband.com/

“The hopes and fears of all the years, are met in Thee tonight!”8 [From: “O Little Town Of Bethlehem”] – Rhonda Frye, SGN Scoops Editor, Rhonda Frye and Riverside http://rhondafrye.com/

My favorite line is probably the first line of “Joy To The World”: “Joy to the world, The Lord is come!”

11 That song always stays up at the top of my favorites and I just love to jump right in on that first line! – John Mathis, contributor to SGN Scoops and Artist http://www.johnmathisjr.com/

From “What Child Is This” – “The King of kings salva-tion brings, Let loving hearts enthrone Him.”9 – Joan Walker, SGN Scoops proofreader http://www.sgn-scoops.com/

One of my favorites is “O Holy Night” and I love the line, “Let all within us praise His holy Name.”1 - Penny Jo Shelnut, Jubilee Talent Agency http://jubileetalenta-gency.com/

I love so many Christmas carols, but perhaps the line I love to sing the most is: «The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight,”8 from “O Little Town of Bethlehem.” I think this line is so important because so many of us fear what tomorrow will bring, even though Jesus warns us not to worry in Matthew 6. Also, so many look forward with expectation to a better future. This line ties both concepts together; it tells us that He calms all of our past fears and He calms all of our future anxieties. He is here, now, in the present, and always will be! Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah! - Sherry Anne, Soloist http://www.sherryanne.com/

From: “O Holy Night” - “Chains shall He break for, the slave is our brother.”1 – Josh Singletary, Tribute Quartet http://www.tributequartet.com/

From: “Beautiful Star Of Bethlehem” – “Beautiful Star of Bethlehem, shine on.”14 – Wanda Osborne, Evange-

list, Latter Glory Ministries http://www.latterglorymin-istries.com/

From: “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” – “O come let us adore Him.”15 – Richard Hyssong, The Hyssongs http://www.thehyssongs.com/index.htm

From: “Away In A Manger” – “Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.”16 – Jennifer Campbell, SGN Scoops writer and Artist http://www.jennifercampbell.net/index.html

My favorite line from a Christmas carol is from a clas-sic carol, “Birthday of a King”. It’s actually the second verse that says “T’was a humble birthplace, but oh how much God gave to us that day; from a manger bed, what a path has led, what a perfect, holy way!”17 I love Christmas time, I love Christmas music, and I love gift giving and receiving as much as anyone! I love the festivities and all the decorations; but when I think of how Jesus came into this world as an infant child, born in the lowliest place, all so that the plan of salvation could begin to be put into place for us – for ME, I am just so humbled to think of all God really did provide for us that day through His precious Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. – Sherri King Vestal, Rejoice http://www.rejoiceonline.org/

My favorite line would be from “O Holy Night:” “O Holy Night, the stars are brightly shinning, it is the night of our dear Savior’s birth.” 1 That’s what it’s all about as a Christian; the birth of our Savior! – Jimmy Reno, To The End Quartet http://totheendonline.com/

Page 17: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

“This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing.”9 I think this is one of my favorite lines of any Christmas carol. When you think about that line you know this Child is the Son of God loved by Heaven and Earth! I think we forget how power-ful and holy Jesus is sometimes. He didn’t have to come to earth to save us, He chose to, and it helps to be reminded of that especially here at the Thanksgiv-ing and Christmas season. [From “What Child Is This”] – Christy Hinson, Weston and Christy Hinson http://www.westonandchristyhinson.com/

“Holy infant so tender and mild.”18 [From: “Silent Night”] – Donna Brock Strong, Hearts of Faith http://www.heartsoffaith.biz/

“Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree, how lovely are your branches.”19 [From: “Oh Christmas Tree] – Gene McDonald, Artist http://www.genemcdonaldmusic.com/

I would have to say “Oh Holy Night”: “Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ‘Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.” 1 On that first Christmas, God initi-ated the most amazing story of grace and love! – Todd Nelon, The Todd Nelon Trio https://www.facebook.

com/todd.nelon.7

From: “Hark The Herald Angels Sing.” Line: “Born that man no more may die. Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth.”19 Every time I sing this hymn and hear this line, I just love it. It is the Good News the angels told the shepherds, and the reason He came. – David Staton, Glass Temple, Song Garden Music Group http://www.songgardenmusicgroup.com/david-staton.php

“All is calm, all is bright.” 18 [From: “Silent Night”] – Crimson River http://www.crimson-river.com/

“Joy to the world the Lord is come!” 11 The greatest gift the world has ever received is when God sent us His Son Jesus. [From: “Joy To The World”] – David Sutton, Triumphant Quartet http://www.triumphantquartet.com/

“Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother; And in His name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His holy name!” 1 [From: “O Holy Night”] – Gary Casto, Tribute Quartet, http://www.tributequartet.com/

There are so many phenomenal carols that really make you feel the breathtaking wonder that IS Christmas. But I think that there is one line that sums it all up so

Page 18: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

perfectly: “Silent night, holy night. All is calm, all is bright!” 18 In today’s world we are so busy living that we don’t stop and realize that there is a peace available to us in the presence of God that surpasses all under-standing. God says to be still, He is in control. So it is those moments when I listen and allow the calm to overtake my soul that I realize just how bright my light can shine because of the birth of Jesus. And that gives me peace.” [From: “Silent Night”] - Carla Bragg, Artist http://carlabragg.com/

“Joy to the world, the Lord is come!” 11 Kinda says it all! [From: “Joy To The World”]- Kim Ruppe Lord, Sisters http://sistersmusic.org/

“Glory to the newborn King!” 19 from “Hark The Herald Angels Sing”, giving praise to our promised Messiah who had finally come to save the world! – Michaela Brown, The Browns http://www.thebrownsmusic.com/

“And in despair I bowed my head: There is no peace on earth I said, for hate is strong, and mocks the song of peace on earth, good will to men...Then pealed the bells more loud and deep, God is not dead, nor doth he sleep. The wrong shall fail, the right prevail, with peace on earth good will to men.”20 [From: “I Heard The Bells

On Christmas Day”] – Jon Hisey, Torchmen Quartet http://www.torchqt.com/

“Oh come let us adore Him!”15 [From: “O Come All Ye Faithful”] – Sharron Kay King, Artist http://www.shar-ronkayking.com/

What Christmas really means: “Joy to the world, the Lord is come!” 11 Why even time itself ‘2013’ is based on Him and even though some try and change it, still the first six letters of this special holiday is “CHRIST!” [From: “Joy To The World”] – Mark Lanier, Artist http://www.marklanierministries.com/

“In His name all oppression shall cease!” 1 From “O Holy Night.” I love that line! – Kelly Bowling, The Bowlings http://www.bowlingsonline.com/

Page 19: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

My favorite line is from a contemporary Christmas song by Mark Lowry: “When you kiss your little baby, you’ve kissed the face of God.” 3 [From: “Mary Did You Know”]. That line has always stuck out to me. From classic carols I love “O, come let us adore Him!”

15 [From: “O Come All Ye Faithful”], “Joy to the world The Lord is come!” 11 [From: “Joy To The World”], and “O come, O come, Immanuel.” [From: “O Come, O Come, Immanuel”]. Wow! I don’t know where to stop! Oh, and one more: “Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinner reconciled.”19 [From: “Hark The Herald Angels Sing”] – Donnie Williamson, The Williamsons http://www.williamsonsmusic.com/

I love the line “This boy that you delivered will soon deliver you”3. [From: “Mary Did You Know”] – Mike LeFevre, The LeFevre Quartet http://www.thelefevre-quartet.com/

“O holy night…”1 [From: “O Holy Night”] – Larry Steeves, The Chapelaires

http://www.chapelaires.com/

“Mistletoe and falling snow and presents under the

tree, but most of all and best of all, a Savior came for me...a Savior came for me!”21 From: “A Savior Came For Me.” – Jeff Hawes, Karen Peck and New River, contributor to SGN Scoops http://www.karenpeckand-newriver.com/

“Let every heart prepare Him room.” 11 [From: “Joy To The World”] – Matthew Browder, The Browders http://www.thebrowders.com/

“Worship Christ, the newborn King!”22 From “Angels From The Realms Of Glory.” – Kelly McLellan, King-sway Quartet http://www.kingswayquartet.com/

“Oh come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!” 15 [From O Come All Ye Faithful] – Christian Davis, Dailey and Vincent http://daileyandvincent.bombplates.com/ and http://christiandavisonline.com/

From “Mary Did You Know,” line: “This child that you’ve delivered, will soon deliver you.” 3 – Bryan and Yvonne Hutson. Bryan is an artist with Soul’d Out http://www.souldoutquartet.com/

“Oh come let us adore Him. Oh come let us adore Him. Oh come let us adore Him, Christ The Lord.” 15 From the beginning of His life, it’s all He asked of us. He just wanted our love, praise and adoration. [From Oh Come All Ye Faithful] – Liz McMillan, McMillan and Life http://www.mcmillanandlife.com/

“Fall on your knees! Oh hear the angel voices! Oh night divine!”1 From the song “O Holy Night.” I can just see all the people falling to their knees, worshiping and

Page 20: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

in utter awe of the sound of angelic voices and choirs singing praises to the King. Wow! Gives me goose bumps thinking about it!” – Chelley Odle, Artist http://www.chelleyodle.com/

My favorite Christmas carol line is “Joy to the world, the Lord has come: Let earth receive her King.” 11 [From: “Joy To The World”] – Susan Peck Jackson, Karen Peck and New River http://www.karenpeckand-newriver.com/

“Hark the herald angels sing, glory to the newborn King!” 19 [From: “Hark The Herald Angels Sing”] – Jason Funderburk, Driven Quartet http://www.drivenqt.com/

From “O Holy Night”: “Truly He taught us to love one another, His law is love and His gospel is peace”1 is my favorite line of a Christmas song. The song itself is my very favorite, but that line holds the truth and spirit of the gospel in a few simple words. – Jimmy McMillan, McMillan and Life http://www.mcmillanandlife.com/

“Joy to the world, the Lord is come.” 11 [From: “Joy To The World”]– Sheila Jackson, The Chapelaires http://www.chapelaires.com/The_Chapelaires/

“When you’ve kissed your little baby, you’ve kissed the face of God.” 3 [From Mary Did You Know] – Dave Jackson, The Chapelaires http://www.chapelaires.com/The_Chapelaires/

“Silent night, holy night.” 18 [From “Silent Night”] – Myrna Hand, The Chapelaires http://www.chapelaires.com/The_Chapelaires/

I wanna say, “ Glo o o o o o Oh o o o o Oh o o o o....reah” But that might be a little difficult to translate into

something easily written. “Angels We Have Heard on High” has certainly been a favourite to sing because of the beautiful harmonies. But, to answer your specific question, my favourite line is “What Child is this Who laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping....”9 I really like this line because it reminds me that my Saviour arrived as a baby just like you and I. Nursing at Mary’s breast, being rocked as He gently fell asleep, softly snoring as He dreamt of grander things that we can only imagine. And at some point, playing around, running with His friends on the playground, playing jacks and skipping rope. Jesus was a child much the same as us and yet grew to be the Savior of the World! Wow, that reality has been with me since the birth of my own children many years ago. [Line from What Child Is This] – Mar-lene O’Neill, Artist http://www.marleneoneill.com/

Thanks to all of our contributors for reminding us of the lyrical treasures within these timeless carols. Our prayer is that we all would take time this season to remember the beautiful words the angels are still singing to us to-day, and that we would give GLORY to our Savior and King this Christmas!

On a Sunday night in November, God showed up in a big way at the First Baptist Church in Kearney, Missouri, and he used The Isaacs as His instrument. To merely say this family is talented would be the understatement of the century. The Isaacs are anointed. I have always said there is nothing better than family harmony, but this family takes it to the extreme. Blending voices so seamlessly with others is a very difficult task even for the most experienced musicians, but Sonya, Becky, Ben, and Lily make it look effortless.

On this night, The Isaacs proved they can per-form any style of music – 80s, bluegrass, southern gospel, and sing it with a message and purpose, and make it their own. The crowd loved Ben’s performance of The Three Bells and Lily’s sweet voice on That Is Why I Sing. Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive was a favorite as well. Get On Board had everyone clapping their hands and tapping their feet. During the second half, The Isaacs graciously took requests from the crowd, including Sonya’s Twinkie Song (Half A Day Away From You).

One of the best things about living in the Kan-sas City area is seeing Lynda Randle slip through the doors and sit in the back of the venue in support of the many Southern Gospel artists that come through this part of Missouri. On this night, after much coaxing from Sonya and from the au-dience, Lynda came to the stage and sang God on the Mountain with the group backing her up. The impromptu, unrehearsed moments are so special, and this was no exception.

Every minute of this night was one to remem-ber, and as always, it ended way too soon. I loved their rendition of the Mike & The Mechanics’ classic, The Living Years. Lily’s testimony about being a 30-year breast cancer survivor struck a note with those of us who have been affected by this disease, either personally or through a loved one’s struggle. Through Lily’s story came the song Martina McBride recorded, and one that had everyone wiping tears on this night, I’m Gonna Love You Through It. Becky told of her years-long battle with a very rare form of Crohn’s Disease and how Waiting in the Water is a testament to God’s love and faithfulness even through the toughest of times. And who could ever forget the stand-ing ovation the group received for their stunning a cappella versions of The Lord’s Prayer and It Is Well.

I am so grateful to have the opportunity to attend Southern Gospel concerts in and around Missouri. I encourage you to support these art-ists. Go to their concerts. Buy their music. Don’t let this wonderful genre die out in your area. Each and every solo artist and group has a special message to bring to your heart. God has greatly blessed us with people who can share His love through song. Receive those blessings. They belong to you.

Until next time, keep on singing, playing, and listening!

From the iconic Brooklyn Bridge to the Coney Island Boardwalk, Brooklyn, New York seems to have it all. But, for thousands who visit or reside in Brooklyn, the most iconic location is not a bridge or pizzeria. It is a house of worship, a lighthouse shining with remarkable brilliance in a vast sea of humanity.

The anointing of the Holy Spirit and the overwhelming love of Jesus Christ can be felt before you even walk through the doors of The Brooklyn Tabernacle. The presence of God permeates the exterior of this historic building and spills out onto the sidewalks. Whether Pastor Cymbala is delivering an anointed message or the choir is joyfully raising their voices in song, you will be reminded that you’ve been redeemed. You will know that you are loved. And you will be reassured that Jesus Christ will always be faithful to the end.

The Brooklyn Tabernacle has over 16,000 members and receives an astounding number of visitors from around the world each year as well. The 280-voice Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir has won six Grammy Awards and five Dove Awards. They have performed at renowned venues in New York City such as Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, and the Madison Square Garden Theater. Most

recently, they had the opportunity to sing at the Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C.

“Senator Schumer called me and asked if the choir could sing at the Presidential Inauguration,” said Carol Cymbala, director of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. “This was an opportunity to get up and sing before a billion people and sing the ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic.’ It talks about ‘mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea...’ To be able to sing those lyrics to the world just meant so much to us. It was an amazing experience, probably one that we’ll never forget. And the intensity that the choir gave that day, that’s the intensity that they give every Sunday because they realize every Sunday, there’s new people coming through those doors that are so broken that need the answer, they need hope, they need peace, so that same intensity is what they sing with week after week here at The Brooklyn Tabernacle.”

While they have been greatly blessed to walk through doors that only God could have opened unto them, it is evident that they do not sing for the glory of it all. Instead, their sole purpose when they step on stage is to give all of the glory,

honor, and praise to Jesus Christ.

Carol stated she does not want the choir to simply be putting on a performance, but she wants them to be able to minister to people who are listening to the songs they sing. Carol talked of her musical background and spoke of how the choir began during our recent conversation: “Honestly, I’ve never been trained in music,” Carol said. “I started [the choir] in the 1970’s. We made our first album in 1981. We’ve made 27 albums. I was a high school graduate, but I hadn’t gone to college or been trained in music, but I had an ear for music as a young child and I had an awareness of music when I was very young and started to play the keyboards, and I would listen to songs and harmonies. I would be mesmerized by them. I did come from a musical family.”

“My family has always supported me,” Carol continued. “My husband and I work together. I’ve been so blessed because I’ve been given carte blanche and I’ve been able to do whatever I want to do and my husband supports me when it comes to the music ministry because he knows that God has entrusted me with it through the years and he believes that when God entrusts you with something, He will lead you. I’ve always had wonderful support from both of my children and my husband.”

“My husband and I began the church with

very humble circumstances. We had a little run

down building here in downtown Brooklyn that seated 150 people to 200 at the most. When I started the choir,” Carol recalled. “I had nine voices. The church was so small. We had about 15 people in the church. Most of those people were tone deaf, so you could imagine! I would play the piano, I would sing solos, and I would direct from the piano. I was doing everything, but I knew at that point that if we didn’t pray and if we didn’t depend on the Holy Spirit and cry out to God, I knew what we would do would be just mere performance. That’s something that I’ve never wanted. I want to be able to have the choir minister to the people through the power of the Holy Spirit. So from the very beginning there’s been dependence on the Lord and His help. That’s how it began and that’s how it remains. Today, when we come in for choir practice on Wednesday nights, the first thing we do is go to prayer.”

There are times when this prayer time is extended, due to the Lord’s leading. Marcia Frazier, choir member, shared, “I’ve experienced in the choir over the years where that 30-45 minutes would become the whole rehearsal, where God would just come and minister to our hearts. On Sunday, the Holy Spirit would just come and bless the people because He knew what He needed to do in that particular rehearsal, where He would

Page 28: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

come and minister to our hearts and take us to that place of worship. And that’s the best part of the choir, actually worshipping God with the gifts that He has given me and the ability that He’s given me all these years to sing for Him.”

Marcia told how she got into the choir. Having been involved in music in many different capacities throughout her life, she auditioned for the choir two times unsuccessfully. She was accepted in to the choir on her third time trying out, a year and a half after the first time she auditioned. “As I was waiting for my time to sing for Carol,” Marcia recalled, “her older daughter Chrissy came up to me and said, ‘Don’t try to impress my mom, just sing.’ I just said, Okay, Lord, I’m just gonna sing. I sang and I was accepted in. More importantly, it was the right time for me to join the choir. Two months later, they produced an album, “How Jesus Loved,” which is the third album the choir recorded. That’s the first album I sang on and the rest has been pretty much history.”

One of Marcia’s most memorable performances was in Jamaica. She gives a recount of the choir’s performance there: “This was the most memorable choir trip to date because of the reception of the people. We sang in this open field in Kingston, Jamaica. There had to be more

than 10,000 people there. We looked out to see a sea of people just like a wave of the sea with their Bibles up in the air and just singing the song “We Are United in Jesus Christ” with us. They were just so on fire and relentless for the Lord. That was a very, very special trip.”

Dr. Scott Pilgrim also shared how he became involved with the choir: “I came to New York to finish up medical school, and my clinical rotations were in Brooklyn. I knew about the church prior, so I decided to check it out. I’ve been in music my whole life, through various symphony orchestras and marching bands. I had sung choir music at my local church in Oregon where I grew up. So that’s one of the reasons I decided to start attending the church, just because I knew of the choir, I knew their music, some of their music anyway, and that’s how I got involved in the choir. I just wanted to try out. Six months after I joined the church, I tried out and that’s almost thirteen years ago.”

Scott said the best part of singing in the choir is the fellowship with its members. “A lot of them become friends and even prayer warriors when you’re going through struggles,” Scott said. “I’ve met a lot of lifelong friends in the group. In fact, I met my wife in the group about a year after I joined. It’ll be eleven years this month that we’ve been married. The choir’s always held a special place in my heart just because of all the people you meet there and certainly the one that I met that is the most important person in my life.”

The diverse congregation and choir definitely make the church special and unique. “What thrills me is our diverse congregation,” said Carol. “We have people from all over the world in the church. I think almost every country is represented. They’re from different cultures, but because of the love of God, we’re all able to come together and worship Him. You know, Heaven’s going to be like that. From what I read in the Bible, people will be there from every nation, every tongue, every tribe, so that’s what thrills my heart because we have people from everywhere and it’s exciting.”

“The choir is an interesting group of people,” Scott commented. “They’re from all walks of life. I’m a physician, but it has less to do with who we are than what we are there for. If I could just impress on people, it’s not about ‘the ministry,’

Page 29: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

it’s not about ‘the choir.’ Because that’s not we’re trying to address people to. It’s through our music, the songs, the words, the lyrics, everything that gets published through Carol is really meant to draw people to God.”

“When my husband and I came to The Brooklyn Tabernacle,” added Carol, “we both saw early on the value of music and how it was so important to lead the people into the presence of God through music and through worship and praise. It prepares him to minister the word. Through the years, I’ve been in charge of music and he’s the pastor, so by ushering the people into the presence of God through the music ministry, it opens their hearts and when he preaches, their hearts are open to receive the Word of God. So the music is very important.”

For Marcia, the presence of God spoke to her the first night she entered the sanctuary. Her mom invited her to church. She stated, “I rejected her [invitations] a number of times and this one particular Sunday, I thought to myself, let me just go to church with her this one time and she’ll leave

me alone. That was the night I went forward with my 10 month old son and gave my heart to Jesus Christ. He took this rebellious teenager that was cursing Him, fighting against Him in every way, with low self-esteem who had a young baby at 19 years old and just wrapped His loving arms around her,

cleansed her with His blood and gave her a reason to live. I’m so grateful for Him, for my pastor, for my mom, for Jesus for dying for me.”

In addition to her mom being an influence in her life, Marcia says Pastor Cymbala has also influenced her greatly. Marcia said, “He’s been someone I could glean wisdom from personally and from the pulpit.” She added, “Carol, of course, is my biggest role model of a Godly woman. Someone once told me that I act like Carol and I told them thank you because that was a big compliment for me. She’s funny and she’s amazing. When it comes to loving God and being sold out, she’s all of that and more.”

Scott says his influences span from Abraham Lincoln to his parents, wife, and Pastor. “I’m a history buff, so I like drawing from historical context, particularly about our U.S. presidents. My

Page 30: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

father and my mother both have been a very strong influence in my life, encouraging me on in music as a hobby, but also in medicine as my career. Certainly, my wife has been a very strong influence on my life. Pastor Cymbala has been an incredible inspiration for my wife and me as our spiritual leader and teaching me personally how to be a better man, how to be a better husband, how to be a better father, how to be a better Christian.”

Recently, the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir released a digital single titled, “Redeemed.” Carol heard the song on the radio while driving through Nashville and immediately knew that the choir needed to sing this song. “I was moved in my heart through that song,” remembered Carol. “And I said to the people who were with us, when I get home, I’m making a choir arrangement of that song because it’s so special because it sums up the Gospel. It talks about God’s love and Christ dying on the cross, your sins being forgiven and new life in Him. It sums it all up.”

Scott talks about how we’ve been redeemed: “Being redeemed means that you are covered by His blood. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, it doesn’t matter what background you come from, and it doesn’t matter what race you are or what gender you are. When you put your faith and trust in God, He’s redeemed you and

He’s called you to be His child. Some of the words of that song probably fit every single one of us, that you’re my child, no matter what you’ve done, you’ve been redeemed. You can shake off those chains, lift your hands, and praise God, because He’s redeemed you from the past.”

Marcia shares her personal story of how she has been redeemed from her past: “I grew up in a home where my mom loved God and my dad was an alcoholic. He verbally, physically, mentally abused her and all of us. I hated my dad. I hated him, but my mom would tell us that we didn’t have to hate them, but that we had to love him as it states in Exodus 20:12. That made me even more resentful of God because I couldn’t understand why I had to love him. My dad didn’t come to my wedding when I got married because he wanted to have alcohol and I told him I was having a Christian wedding, so he withdrew helping me financially with the wedding and refused to walk me down the aisle. I resented my dad for a lot of that and God has brought me to a place of healing, forgiveness, and love. My dad is now 77 years old and has some physical ailments. God chose me to be the one to take him to the doctor. Now I’m able to present Jesus to him, not just through my words, but through my actions and being there for him. Now, I can love my dad and I can actually say the words, ‘I love you’ and he says it back. When I was growing up, he could only say it when he was drunk. When he was sober, he was so mean; love was not even in his vocabulary. That’s my personal testimony of God’s faithfulness and His love and the ability for Him to work in our hearts to love someone that at one point you thought it was impossible to do.”

Scott has also had his share of struggles, even though he grew up in a Christian home. He shared, “I knew about God from a very early age and I knew all of the right things to say. Sometimes you’re able to put up a façade, and not necessarily live the life that you’re painting. You paint a very false picture of what’s going on inside. When I went away to college, I was away from everybody that I knew, so I didn’t have to have that façade up. My life took on a very different flavor. I got involved in some things I definitely should not have been involved in. It wasn’t until medical school that God really got hold of me. The Bible says, ‘those who put their trust in God, He will make their paths straight.’ Mine haven’t always been straight.

Page 31: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

When you live 100% devoted to God, He’s going to take you places and He’s going to take care of you. He’s going to make sure you have food on the table and your bills are paid and your kids are protected when they go to school. It’s not just for the things He does for you, but it’s for the love that He shares with you. The love that He has for us is so overwhelming that just to sit down and think about it almost brings us to tears.”

While the church and choir have both been supportive of Pastor Cymbala and his wife Carol, there have been times when their faith was tested as well. The song “He’s Been Faithful” was born through one of these trials. “It was during a time when my daughter was away from the Lord,” Carol reflected. “She was a teenager and she had actually gotten involved with some young people that were in the church that had a very bad effect on her. To make a long story short, she got into trouble and became very rebellious and for a period of time, left our home. It was a very difficult time for my husband and me because we’ve ministered here in the inner city for many, many years and now our oldest daughter was out there and I can’t tell you how difficult that was for us. Then, at the same time, I went to the doctor and the doctor let me know that I had the beginnings of cancer, so I ended up in the hospital and I had an operation, so during this time, my daughter away, going through this operation, my world was falling apart. Right

there, in the hospital room, lying in the bed, I was feeling really sorry for myself. I just needed the Lord to come and comfort me, which He did and He gave me that song, ‘He’s been faithful, faithful to me. Looking back, His love and mercy I see. Though in my heart I have questioned, even failed to believe, yet He’s been faithful to me.’ That’s my testimony, because He continues to be faithful today.”

Marcia said God has been faithful to her because He has healed her body from a disease the doctors told her she would have to live with. “That’s His ultimate faithfulness in my life. He’s just all around faithful in my life. Everything that you could place under the heading of faithfulness, God has been to me,” she said.

“He’s been faithful to me because I have no idea why. But He is,” Scott added. “He’s been faithful to me every single time. He has unconditional love for us and He calls us His children. He’s faithful because He’s an all-powerful God who cares for His children.”

To anyone reading this article that may be going through a battle of their very own, Carol offers the following advice: “Don’t give up. Continue to pray and believe because God will definitely see you through. Sometimes we look at everything through time and sometimes the answer

Page 32: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

doesn’t come exactly when we want it to come, but the answer will come. God will bring you through. He’s done that so many times in my life, when I’ve had adversity and challenges, and I’m like, what am I going to do now, but I’ve had nothing else to do but trust Him and through trusting Him, I’ve seen Him come through every time.”

The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir has earned much respect in the music industry and garnered many accolades. When asked about their achievements, Carol said that winning souls for Christ is their greatest overall achievement. “We have thousands of people that walk by our doors every day in downtown Brooklyn,” said Carol. “Brooklyn is a borough of New York City and it’s the fourth largest city in America. We have so many people passing by our doors. Just to see the people come in to the church from all different walks of life. We have people who come in who are homeless, we have people come in who are doctors and lawyers, professional people, then we have people who come in who have very difficult circumstances, so seeing them come in, ministering the Word of God, ministering salvation through Jesus Christ and seeing them stand and come forward and receive Jesus Christ probably is the most exciting thing. And I feel that’s a great achievement because that’s lasting and that’s eternal. That’s what’s so beautiful. Everything’s going to pass away, but what we do for Christ lasts forever. So seeing people week after week receiving Christ is probably our greatest achievement.”

“You don’t know who’s putting a CD of yours in their car, or in their home,” stated Scott, “or whose father or mother just died or whose child was in the hospital, or whatever’s going on in their life. Music draws them closer to God and that’s the purpose of why we do what we do.”

Carol added, “In the past eight months we’ve been able to baptize almost 500 people here at The Brooklyn Tabernacle. They’ve received Christ and that has been amazing and that means that the Gospel is touching hearts and changing lives, so that’s been a great victory and we’re very thankful for that.”

The idea of drawing people toward Christ is the number one driving force behind this Grammy Award-winning choir. For the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, the goal and aim of all music is to draw

people closer to God and to lead them into His presence. Their hearts are on fire for God and they are devoted to spreading the love of Jesus through song. God’s Word says, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15 NIV). Through their songs, their testimonies, and their lives, the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir is answering this call, faithful to continue the ministry that God has entrusted to them. Carol Cymbala and the members of the choir are living proof that Jesus Christ is as close as the mention of His name. He will deliver us from all harm. He will redeem us. And He will always be faithful!

I want to personally encourage you to visit The Brooklyn Tabernacle this month for their special Christmas musical production, “Christmas in the City.” The dates and times for the production are December 15 (3:00 p.m.), 17 & 19 (7:00 p.m.), and 22 (12:00 & 3:00 p.m.). “It’s a totally new production with new songs and everything, so we’re really excited about that,” Carol added. Having personally enjoyed Christmas production last year, I can assure you that it will be a life-changing experience that will remind you of the joy of Jesus this Christmas season!

It was a cold, January night in the valley of coal. A fresh coating of snow covered the hills and glistened bright-ly in the light of the full moon, as tiny plumes of smoke waft-ed skyward from the chimneys in the valley below. For a mo-ment, time stood still, as if the entire universe wanted me to know I was a part of something larger. The silence would have been deafening had it not been for the crunching and squeaking coming from beneath my partner’s boots. “Nice night, but it’s cold, and we have work to do,” he said, as he grasped my shoulder. I nodded, turned, and opened the door of the ambulance to retrieve a rescue bag and a bottle of oxygen.

Now there were numerous ways one could con-tribute to the needs of our small community. We had our share of non-profit organizations, religious charities, ethnic and social clubs, and the volunteer fire department or am-bulance service. My father was a volunteer firefighter, but since my idea of adventure did not include imitating a roast-ed hot dog, I opted to invest my efforts as part of the local

emergency medical squad.

Three o’clock A.M. calls weren’t uncommon, especially during the extremes of weather, and so here we were again. My partner and I made our way up the unshoveled walk and onto the front porch of a tiny home; an old company row house left over from the big mining era that swept through the val-ley decades earlier. We knocked at the door and let ourselves in, because everyone made themselves at home with Miss Annie Krinksy.

Annie Krinsky was an elderly lady, a retired elementary school teacher who never married and she was without a family. Her parents, John and Beulah, had immigrated to the United States in the 1920s and came to our town in search of what everyone else had come for – work! Her father was a coal miner, and her two brothers, John and Jack, soon joined him in the mines after complet-ing the eighth grade. While they labored to survive the Great Depression, they soon succumbed to the dangers of the earth below. Annie quit school and took a job at the local company store in order to keep the house where she and her mother would live out their days. After a long day at work, An-nie would visit Sister Maria Theresa Coppelo, a lo-cal teacher who would tutor her for the purposes of obtaining a teaching certificate. Annie soon be-came a teacher.

Annie met us at the door and offered us the usual coffee and cookies. She was a frail woman, bent at the shoulders and joints. I looked at her hands in amazement and wondered how she could care for herself. The years of hard labor and coping had left a mark and while 3:00 A.M. calls weren’t un-common, 3:00 A.M. calls to Annie Krinsky’s house

usually meant one thing - she was lonely.

This wasn’t my first visit to Annie’s house. In fact, everyone on the rescue squad knew her by name and she knew them. Responding to an emergency call at Annie Krin-sky’s was like visiting an old friend. She never had a real com-plaint. We would simply check her vital signs, call the doctor at the emergency room with report to get signed off, and then radio the dispatch of our availability while we stayed a few moments to chat. Her house was amazing considering her condition; it was spotless and smelled of Pine-sol and Lemon Pledge. But there was one thing I will never forget about Annie’s home – someone had given her an artificial Christmas tree, and she never put it away. In fact, she would turn on the lights at any given time (even in July), and you could always see unopened packages underneath the tree.

I remember the last call to Annie Krinsky’s house. A neighbor had reported that she would not answer the door

By Scott Rhoades

Unopened Gifts

Page 36: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

and called for help. Albert, the town police chief arrived and led us inside where we found her in her favorite rock-ing chair facing the Christmas tree. She was covered with a puffy, homemade quilt, but it could not keep her from the chilling arms that enveloped her body. Annie Krinsky had died.

It’s Christmas Eve, and as I look at our tree and the wrapped gifts underneath, I am reminded of Annie and her oddities. I’m not sure what happened to her home, her possessions, or to her tree. I am curious as to what and for whom those unopened packages were intended. I never asked, but I am saddened to think she had gifts to share that will never be known.

Perhaps you and I have unopened gifts under our Tree of Life; talents, abilities, and spiritual fruits all waiting to be consumed by a world in need. Perhaps we hold back

because of fear, guilt, unforgiveness, or other circumstances that make the joy of giving seem like an impossible feat. During this Christmas, I hope you will resolve to empty your tree of unopened packages as I will. The world is waiting for us!

Last month I had the privilege of attending the Third Annual AMG Heritage Award show located at The Barn at Regent Park in Fort Mill, SC. I was there during the entire convention, which lasted three days. What is the Artists Music Guild? Well, let me tell you. This guild was founded by none other than Christian recording artist David L. Cook. It’s safe to say he has had a lot of experience in the industry; he began his career at the age of five when he began performing with his family, The Cook Family Singers.

I asked David why he felt the need to start AMG. “As someone who grew up on the stage I have seen a lot of stuff in my life and throughout the music industry. Some of it is wonderful, but a lot of it is treacherous. We started the Guild to stop organiza-tions and individuals from continuing to take advan-tage of unsuspecting artists. I have been a part of many organizations during my career and I wanted to give back what I had learned during my years of performing to help other artists in their different jour-neys. That is what the Artists Music Guild is all about, helping other artists with their music or whatever form of art God has placed before them while teach-ing them professionalism and mentoring them to be the best artist they can be.”

Okay, so that is a little of what the AMG is all about, artists from Praise and Worship bands, gospel, Christian country, Christian comedians all the way to Christian authors such as myself. Some of the art-ists that attended were Hearts of Faith, Jim Sheldon, Tommy Brandt, Richard Kiser and The Dixie Melody Boys- just to name a few.

November 7th was registration. Different art-

ists began pouring into The Barn. If that place name sounds a little familiar is should, it was where the PTL was first filmed in the 70’s and 80’s. The first day of the convention consisted of singing and laughing. It was one big showcase. Every artist was able to perform and showcase what talent God has given them. This lasted all day long. It was quite the treat to hear all this talent under one roof. I got to hear the anointed voice of Sharron Kay King and hear Isaac Cole sing about being a country boy. Tommy Brandt gave us that country charm. Richard Kiser took off with his guitar licks and newcomer Emily Faith stole our hearts with her dynamic voice. Terry Webster gave us the big band sound with his new band Steel City Sound as they added some funk to an old hymn.

The Guild is very proud to be able to mentor young artists. As stated earlier that is one of founder David’s biggest pleasures. During the showcase we were all honored with the arrival of students/young artists from Northwest School of the Arts along with Sterling Elementary School. Not only did these stu-dents get to hear some amazing talented singers but they also got to get some great tips about music and performing from such artists as David L. Cook, Richard Kiser and Terry Webster.

The second day consisted of mostly differ-ent workshops. David taught us how to brand our product better; Christy Sutherland gave us tips on songwriting. During one of the workshops led by Fran Lacey, the session turned into a worship time when people just sang praises. That is what happens when you have a lot of people together that love God. Needless to say the workshops were very informative, even for a writer like me. Like any convention there is

always time to network and get to know one another. I met so many wonderful new friends. Fran Lacey who works with the Academy of Country Music and Morning Sun Yellow Pony, a Native American singer/songwriter were a few.

Okay now for the main event, the 2013 AMG Heritage Awards. The red carpet came out at five o’clock and the artists began pouring in. The show was filmed and will be airing sometime in the future but not sure when. Seven o’ clock it’s time for the show to begin, Union County Youth Ballet began the night with an amazing performance accompanied by Chubby Checker’s number one hit song, “The Twist.” Why that particular song? Well because Mr. Chubby Checker was the host for the event. How cool is that.

Chubby also performed his new Christian single, “Changes.” Other performers that night were Marlana Vanhoose, the Lee Park Choir, Dylan Arms, Terri Gibbs, Betty Jean Robinson, Stella Parton, Dino Kartsonakis and many others. It was a night of laugh-

ter, great music and lots of fun. Before the show I asked a few of the dancers from the Union County Youth Ballet what it was like to meet a legend like Chubby Checker and to dance the twist while he was watching. “It’s pretty cool. I hope I do the dance right.” “Yeah very cool, it’s really neat.” I have to agree, that was pretty cool, and I even got a few lessons from him on doing the twist. Like I said, the event was a lot of fun and I’m sure next year’s event will be even better. When Tim Rackley and Doug Roark felt led by God to form a trio in 2003, their first thought was to find a name. Tim’s father suggested the Old Paths, from the scripture in Jeremiah 6:16... “Seek ye the Old Paths and walk there

in.” That name expressed the group’s desire to present the gospel in their services and concerts and the verse soon

became their mission statement.

Shortly after their formation, Tim, who sings lead, Doug, who fills the baritone spot and tenor Chad Dominey were joined by Brandon Barry singing bass. They established a following with fans, with radio DJs and with industry and record company executives with powerful songs, solid vocals, testimonies and consistent faithfulness to their mis-sion. In eight years the quartet released eleven recordings along with a Christmas album.

God continued to bless the group, moving the right people into positions left available when personnel chang-es happened. These differences marked their progress with excitement and a fresh sound. In 2007 God sent Jeremy Peace to sing tenor, and two years ago Daniel Ashmore came on board singing bass.

The current front-line of the Old Paths Quartet is Tim Rackley, Doug Roark, Jeremy Peace and Daniel Ashmore, with Josh Townsend playing piano/keyboards. Jeremy

Chupp travels with the quartet as their sound engineer.

Occasionally Jeremy Peace and Jeremy Chupp, playing bass guitar and drums, respectively, join Josh Townsend to form a live band. Live music always excites Gospel music fans, and The Old Paths Band is a big hit with their follow-ers.

This year has been phenomenal for The Old Paths Quar-tet. Signing a recording agreement with Crossroads Music, one of Gospel Music’s leading record companies, set the pace for two chart topping songs, an appearance at the National Quartet Convention and being voted the conven-tion’s Favorite New Quartet Award this year. This year also brought about their signing with Harper and Associates to a booking contract.

The excitement in the group not only focuses on their career achievements, but on their ministry mission and their spiritual lives. In a recent conversation, Jeremy Peace shared, “While we’re called to minister with our music, we also have three preachers in the group. Shortly after I came to the group, I realized that I had been going through the motions and needed to have a personal relationship with the Lord. I surrendered to preach shortly afterward. Doug Roark and Jeremy Chupp are also ministers,” he informed. “While we do not preach during our concerts, we will often

share our testimonies, as the Lord directs. We understand that people come to hear us sing, and yet if anyone comes forward for prayer, we are more than ready and willing to pray with them. We all have a strong desire to see lives changes through our efforts for God.”

In speaking to Jeremy we learned the group is very selective with their music. “We are very cautious when we choose our music for our recordings and to present in concert,” Jeremy stated. “As students of the Word, we want our presentation to be scripturally sound as well as lyrically sound. We don’t want to sing just anything. Our desire is for the audience to be involved in the music. We are seri-ous when we need to be and have fun when we should.”

The Old Paths have kept very busy and have performed over 170 dates this year. This includes concert dates, evangelistic services and Jubilees. “While our music min-istry is important, our families are important to us and our ministry. We couldn’t do this without family support and we consider this when we look at booking dates,” Jeremy explained. “It’s our goal to stay busy, but that busy-ness includes taking care of our home life.”

When the quartet is on the road, the men share their hearts and desires with each other. “We spend many hours traveling,” Jeremy declares. “We are away from our home churches most every Sunday, so our Sunday service is really our Wednesday night services with our families. Sometimes one of us will preach in our home church on Wednesday night. When we’re traveling we might discuss that, or might talk about the place where we are scheduled to sing or something.” He continued, “We feel comfortable with each other; we know what we believe and can share that and pray together about things. That draws us closer.”

During the holidays, Old Paths uses Christmas music in their concerts. “We also will do complete Christmas pro-grams if the pastor desires that,” Jeremy stated. “We sing Christmas carols, familiar Christmas songs, like “Sleigh Bells”, and any song they might want. We talk about the real meaning of Christmas.”

The Old Paths have two Christmas recordings in their inventory. “Both were done prior to this year,” Jeremy informed, “but they have all the good Christmas music you usually hear. The most current Christmas CD is HIS NAME IS JESUS and we use music from this in our concerts and services.”

Speaking of Christmas, each of the members of this quartet shared their plans for Christmas.

Doug Roark and his wife Andrea have three children, Douglas, Brandon and Brittany. Doug shared, “Christmas is such a special time for us. It is Andrea’s favorite holiday so we get up very early, just like we did when the children were small. I like surprises and surprising everyone with special gifts. So we open presents, give thanks to the Lord for being the greatest gift of all, and then it’s off to the kitchen for a busy day of cooking and family time. Our home is filled with the smell of turkey, laughter and Christ-mas music. It just doesn’t get any better.”

Tim and Scarlett Rackley have two children, Brianna and Watters. Tim tells us, “The month of December is a big month for our family. Including Christmas, which is our favorite holiday, December is mine and my wife’s anniver-sary month, and both of our children’s birthday month. On Christmas Eve, we always have dinner and exchange gifts. We then have the kids read the Christmas story at my

Page 43: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

wife’s parents’ house. On Christmas morning we take time for devotion and prayer for everyone who is hurting and in need during the Christmas season. Afterwards, the chil-dren get to tear into their gifts. The rest of the day we go to our families who all live close by. I even get to eat several pieces of my mother’s red velvet cake! By the end of the day we are all tired and ready for bed. We settle in by pray-ing and thanking the Lord for all he has provided us with during the year, and for being the reason we celebrated Christmas day.”

Jeremy and Jennifer Peace have two children, Abigail and Rachel, with another on the way. “The Peace family will spend Christmas this year together making home-made decorations, candies, and crafts. We plan on driving through the various neighborhoods gazing at Christmas lights, and enjoying small town parades. Our Christmas Eve will be spent with family and friends, and Christmas Day will be enjoyed at our home, together,” Jeremy explained.

Daniel Ashmore and his Fiancé, Katelyn Maness, will be married in a few months, and shared their plans for this

holiday season. “Christmas for me tends to be a month long process with going to see my fiancé and going to see family. I have family in Mississippi that my fiancé and I are going to see the week before Christmas to celebrate with them. The week before that is the annual Old Paths Christmas Dinner and I will have everyone there with me. For Christmas day I will be in N.C. with my future wife and her family. I am very excited this time of year because I love Christmas and all that it means to me.”

Jeremy and Rachel Chupp will be celebrating their first Christmas as husband and wife. “This will be a very special Christmas for my wife and I. On April 20th, 2013 I married the woman of my dreams, Rachel. This will be our first Christmas together. While we were dating we were un-able to spend Christmas together because she was always visiting family in Texas. This will also be a special Christmas because we are expecting our first child. The day itself will be a busy one, trying to fit in seeing all of our family mem-bers. But the moment I am looking forward to the most will be waking up in our home on Christmas Day, and enjoy-ing each other as we open presents and find what Santa brought us.”

As the newest member of The Old Paths Quartet, Josh Townsend is excited to be celebrating Christmas with the group. He states,”I’ll be spending Christmas Eve and Christ-mas morning with my mom, grandparents, aunt, and fam-ily friends.  We’ll have dinner and open presents Christmas

Page 44: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

Eve followed by games and fellowship. Christmas morning we’ll have breakfast and visit until I leave for the airport at noon to fly back to Atlanta where I’ll begin the New Year traveling with The Old Paths Quartet.’

As the Christmas season passes and a New Year ap-proaches, The Old Paths Quartet is excited about what God has in store. Their excitement about the future increases as God continues to bless their music and their ministry. Be sure to visit with The Old Paths Quartet during the New Year whenever they come to your area. You’re sure to enjoy some superb Southern Gospel music and you will fall in love with the men who present it, their testimonies and their personalities.

Visit their website at www.theoldpathsonline.com for their complete schedule and information on their music. You can also keep up with what’s happening for this very talented quartet.

We made our first mission trip together as a family in October of 2013. We were invited by an organization called Manna Worldwide, which has several feeding centers and orphanages around the world. They specifically wanted us to travel to Guatemala to take a look at their work there. It is a trip I will not soon forget. You see all the commercials on TV and honestly you think to yourself, it can’t really be this bad. It’s worse than I ever thought it might be and life changing to see. We should be so thankful for everything that we have, never complaining.

Our trip definitely had a rocky start. We have had a busy schedule this entire year, making life a little crazier than normal. On the day of our flight out to Antigua, Guatemala, Jason could not find his passport. He had just had it a few days before but as we searched the house over it was nowhere to be found. Finally, we made the decision for the girls to head to the airport so we wouldn’t miss our flight and if Jason found his passport he could join us later.

We rushed to the airport and finally got to the desk.

I was already stressed since we were going without Jason, when the lady at the counter said that Amber was not going to be able to go. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “Why not?” I asked her. “Well her passport has some indentions in it. What happened to it?” Amber said, “When our dog was a puppy, he got into my purse and chewed on it a bit.” The lady said Amber couldn’t go. At this point I was about to cry since they had already put Autumn’s and my luggage on through.

Now it is down to just Autumn and I on the flight. I asked the lady if she could call someone higher up to look at it. In the meantime, Jason found his passport but would have to dash to make it before the flight left. Then another representative came and looked at the passport and said it would be fine as nothing was messed up on the inside, only some teeth marks on the cover. Amber’s luggage was sent on.

Finally, Jason made it and we were on our way. I must admit I thought maybe we weren’t supposed to go on this trip, but sometimes God shows His greatest work through our trials. It was to be a most memorable

The Gift that Gives Forever

trip.

We arrived in Antigua late that night where we were picked up and taken to our hotel. It seemed a little scary because it was so dark and the hotel had big, closed doors. However, behind the doors was a beautiful hotel that would be our home for the next few days. Early the next morning we started our tour of the first Feeding Center. It was a short drive and we soon drove up a cobblestone road to a house that feeds hundreds of children each day. We toured the center before the children were to arrive. This center was nicer than I thought it would be and it was complete with a kitchen. The only thing was that the restrooms were outside and primitive and without toilet paper. Good thing we brought our own!

We started preparing the food. That day’s menu consisted of rice and a soup of beans, tomatoes and pork, and a tortilla. Asking as many questions as I could think of, I found out that some of the children will walk more than 45 minutes each way to have the one meal a day. Some of the businesses in the area will donate food that they can use, including broken eggs that we saw in the refrigerator and day old bread. I also found out that you can tell when a child is malnourished by looking at their hair. The hair at the end of the strand will be discolored, having almost a red tint. Stunted growth is another sign. I saw one little boy who was around 14 but looked like a seven- or eight-year-old child.

I began to hear sounds of children outside, so we went to greet them. They were the most loving children and they were happy even though their circumstances were dreary. They really wanted to be loved. We played games outside with them. Duck, Duck, Goose was their favorite. They say, ‘Pato, Pato, Ganso!’

Amber and Autumn were a big hit with the children. One little girl really loved Autumn and the bracelet she was wearing, so she ended up giving it to her. The little girl was thrilled! Amber had two girls sitting with her in the swing and she did the ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider” over and over with them.

Soon the children began to line up to enter the Feeding Center to eat. I noticed that one of the workers was standing at the door. Her job was to tell the children in line when there was no food left. That broke my heart to think that a child might have walked 45 minutes to get there and find that there was no food left. The children entered one by one until it was completely filled. There were only a couple of children who were to be turned away that day, but they managed to shift some food around so all could eat. This makes me cry as a write this!

After being seated, the leader Maria started the Bible story and songs. The children listened intently to the stories about Jesus and sang the songs with all they had. Then she introduced us and we sang for them. Mario told me later that as we were singing a little girl looked up at her and pointed to her arm where she showed her

Page 49: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

that she had goose bumps. What a blessing to be there with them.

After the stories and songs we served the food. Hundreds of plates and juice were given out and the children left fed in their spirits and body.

Next we visited a home, which consisted of a two-room shack with a grandmother who had already raised ten children of her own and now raising 15 of her grandchildren. She allowed us to come into her home. Her name was Sabina and she carried her six-month-old grandchild on her back. She was inside making tortillas.

Shocked is the only word I can give to explain what I saw there. It was two rooms with dirt floors. The kitchen contained a wood-burning stove and the smoke was so overwhelming that I continued to smell it in my nose for two days. Looking up, I saw black soot and grease everywhere. The other room had three beds in it, a table in the middle and I noticed some stuffed animals on the wall. I wondered how all 15 people could crowd in this room to sleep.

We asked Sabina if we could pray for her. She said, ‘Yes, yes,’ and gathered all of the children around. She told us through the interpreter that one of her daughters was in the hospital and Sabina feared that she would never return home to care for the baby. She said, “Please pray that God will send help to me, I am too old to care for all these young children.” It is a load too heavy for her to bear. We began to pray and the children put their hands in prayer form and began to pray out loud too. It was one of the most touching moments I have ever been a part of.

We laid our hands on Sabina and asked God to protect her and her family, and to send the help that she needed. Big tears fell from her eyes and I felt so helpless for her. I hated to leave her in that condition. It was just one of the many heart-breaking sights that we saw.

At this point, the day was almost over and we were heading back to eat, but we wanted to see a little of the country. We took a little trip and saw some active

Page 50: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

volcanoes and went on a zip line excursion. This is a beautiful country and we saw some breath taking sights on the zip line. I still can’t believe I did it, but I’m glad I did! We found a place to eat in the city that night and walked through the open-air market and then returned to our rooms for some much needed rest. The next day would be a packed day.

After rising early, we left the hotel at 7:00 am for a two-hour ride to the next Feeding Center. We stopped at the ocean to meet up with another church group from Texas and had lunch. I wasn’t sure if Autumn and I were going to be able to eat when we saw the fish and the shrimp. They still had eyes in them and they were huge! I tasted the fish and could not bring myself to eat the shrimp. Autumn and I ended up eating the French

fries, with a desert of fresh coconut. Jason ate it all. Amber ate nothing! On our way to the Center, it had rained and as we passed the make shift shacks I noticed they were flooded. Their homes and where they sleep were flooded as well. People riding on bicycles, which most of them do, were splashed by the cars that passed them. I can’t imagine living like that! Sometime after the rain, the heat and humidity became unbearable.

We arrived at the Feeding Center after two hours and discovered that it was also a church. It was totally different from the other place we had visited. The church was open air with a dirt floor kitchen. It seemed that the children here were much worse than the day before, but you could not tell it by the smiles of the faces on the children.

Ironically that day was national holiday known as ‘Day of the Children’ and it meant that ‘every child deserves a party.’ It was very festive on the outside with balloons and a clown. Once again they enjoyed Bible stories with games and songs. We sang, ‘If You’re Happy And You Know It.’ They sang it with us in Spanish. They also began singing a song and it took me a minute to recognize it, but it was Joel Hemphill’s song, ‘He’s Still Working On Me.’ It warmed my heart to hear them.

Page 51: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

The children were fed spaghetti with pork that day and of course, a tortilla. They had all kinds of games and Piñatas that they hit blind folded to get the candy out. We were told not to hold or pick up the children here because lice ran rampant. How could we not

hold them? Autumn had a little three-year-old girl who loved her and though I worried about Autumn picking her up, I prayed for God’s protection as she did. She also shared her snacks of fruit-roll-ups and Ritz crackers with cheese. It was such a sweet sight.

We left the feeding center with our windows down as the children waved and followed us as far as they could saying, ‘Adiós’ or ‘Farewell!’

We left for the airport at 2:30 am for our flight back to Atlanta. I still have the children and the grandmother Sabina etched into my memory. I pray for them daily that God will provide and that He will make a way that we can help. I come away with thankfulness in my heart for everything I have been given and that great gift of LOVE, love that can be shown in so many ways.

Lord, show me how I can help and what I can do to help others and show your love.

What about you? Let’s take the holidays and show love to others who are in need.

“I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified” (1 Corinthians 9:27).

One decision that changed my life was in the area of how I think about food.

I used to live with a diet/deprivation mentality. Maybe you’ve done that, too. You know, living on salads with vinegar and diet soda to lose weight, and rarely eating any fats since no-fat diets were all the rage. And then did you switch to little-to-no carbs when that diet was in vogue? Yeah, me, too.

Chronic dieting has affected countless numbers of people. Many have found that their thyroid, adrenals, metabolism, and relationship with food have suffered from that kind of diet and food deprivation mentality.

I made a decision some years ago to make a change. I decided to start eating and enjoying whole foods, not diet foods. I enjoy helping people see that they can have abundance eating and enjoying foods as God created them, and “ditch” the diet mentality.

By eating this way many report they experience far less digestive upset, a lessening of inflammation in the body, and almost effortless weight loss.

My holiday survival tips are tips for you are ones you can actually use every day of your life.

1. Allow Yourself to Enjoy Celebrations. If you want to have some chocolate, then by all means treat yourself to some. All too often, when we continually say “No” to our-selves, we find ways to make up for it later, many times by overeating the good foods (instead of allowing ourselves a small, sweet treat). Instead, allow yourself to have that sweet treat and balance it with a fresh veggie juice or a glass of lemon water to alkalize your digestive system.

2. Be Alert...and Relax. Holidays can be stressful (I can hear you saying, “Tell me about it!”). When we stress, our cortisol level rises and our body goes into “fight or flight

mode,” which God designed to help us when confronted by danger. We only want to experience this in emergencies. The problem is that many of us are reacting to stress this way in everyday life, and it takes its toll on our health.

In order to balance blood sugar, have healthy digestion and elimination, enjoy good sleep, and a strong metabolism, we want to keep our cortisol levels out of “fight or flight mode.” Here is a simple thing you can do which absolutely works. If you are feeling stressed, then take one minute and excuse yourself from the event, dinner table, or holiday party and find a place where you can do some gentle deep breathing for a minute or two. At the same time, meditate on a favorite passage from Scripture, such as the 23rd Psalm (“The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want...”). This will help reset your nervous system and you will feel calmer.

Take Control! Speak to your soul as David did. He spoke to his mind and emotions in Psalm 42:5, “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance.”

Choose to cast your cares and burdens over on the Lord and determine to rest in Him instead of carrying all the care and responsibilities on your own shoulders. Ask Him to help you. Ask Him to guide you to people who will be a blessing to you—to help you, to pray with you, to be a friend and sup-porter to you.

3. Choose Life by choosing to delight in the holi-days! I used try to be perfect, but I’ve come to realize I cannot be perfect in this world. I can, however, recognize that I serve a perfect God who loves me perfectly. And the Word of God says that “perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18). So, there’s nothing for us to fear. Ask the Lord to love others through you and help them to feel God’s love. Hallelujah!

Here’s a simply delicious and healthful holiday recipe the whole family will enjoy!

From the Anchormen to Gold City, Steve Ladd’s career in Southern Gospel carried him across the country and across the airwaves as one of the top Gospel tenors in the late 1990’s through to 2009. Since that time, Ladd has recorded three solo albums, with his latest CD On My Own containing a mix of songs that showcase his vocal range, evolving musical style and deep passion for the lost. In this season of giving, he shares how he has also expanded his ministry to giving to those who can’t give back, through assisting with Compassion International and also The Bridge Ministry in Nashville, Tennessee.

Steve Ladd recently spoke with Scoops about his new album. “I’m so proud of On My Own,” said Ladd. “I had a lot of help making it from the fans getting behind it and supporting the project, to the people involved in making it a reality. My friends and legends Michael Sykes and Michael English, along with myself, produced the album. These songs are exactly what I wanted to say in this time of my life, and I’m getting reports of how some of the songs are having life changing results!”

Gospel artist Michael English says he’s a fan of this versatile soloist. “Steve Ladd is one of the best singers I’ve had the privilege of knowing and producing. He’s also one of my best friends. I’ve never known a more humble and giving man. I’m honored to have worked with him on this new project. You will not be disappointed when you hear it.”

Ladd had some well-known artists assist with background vocals on the CD, including Joyce Martin and Michael English. Another vocalist is immediately recognizable on her trademark song, which Ladd competently covers on this project. “Master Of The Wind has always been a favorite of mine and to do a duet with Candy Christmas just made it that much more special,” said Ladd. “Candy is a great friend and she’s full of the love and compassion of Jesus. I became involved with her Bridge Ministry when we moved to the Nashville area a few years ago. It has changed my outlook on true ministry and I’m honored to be a small part of what she’s doing under that bridge every Tuesday night!

The Jefferson Street Bridge in Nashville, Tennessee is home to many homeless, poor and food-insecure, or those who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Candy Hemphill Christmas began The Bridge Ministry in 2004 by taking hot meals to those living beneath the bridge. Today The Bridge Ministry is a non-profit organization that provides food and clothing every Tuesday night, as well as encompassing a warehouse that acts a food bank for other organizations. The Ministry also provides education, skills training and raises awareness of inner-city issues.

Each week the Bridge Ministry also provides music and preaching along with food and clothing, and this outreach has become very special to Steve Ladd. “I try to be there every single Tuesday unless I’m on the road or my children have a school function,” says Ladd.

Giving The Gift Steve LaddBy Lorraine Walker

Page 58: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

“Whether it’s two degrees or 102 degrees outside, the homeless and poverty stricken are still there needing our help and we are called to be Jesus’ hands and feet. It moves me to see how God is working under The Bridge!”

Ladd says this outreach has changed everything for him. “I’m not quick to look away when someone stands on a corner asking for help, or when I see a need in someone’s life. I feel God has blessed my calling and ministry because I’m willing to help these people out. Even if it’s just through a song or a hug and making them feel special. My favorite part of the service is when we pray one-on-one with them. We are seeing lives changed, saved and set free every single week.”

During the Tuesday night outreaches, many of Candy Christmas’ friends come by to sing and preach. When it’s Ladd’s turn for music, he knows what those assembled want to hear. “They usually like for me to sing ‘Preach The Word,’ because they are truly hungry for the Word and are very respectful when the preacher speaks,” says Ladd. “There’s a different preacher every week. You never know who is going to just show up and give of themselves and talents to the homeless. Just a few weeks ago, Journey members and writers of hits like Don’t Stop Believing, Open Arms and more, stopped in to sing. Our friends under the bridge are so

appreciative.”

The Bridge friends enjoy Ladd’s music and so do new fans across the country. He was awarded the Singing News Fan Award 2013 Favorite New Soloist Of The

Year. Ladd also was featured on a cut with the Stamps Quartet on the latest Alan Jackson CD, Precious Memories Part Two.

“What an honor!” says Ladd, regarding the recording for Alan Jackson. Although Ladd is seeing many dreams come true, he says there are some other things on his bucket list. “I’ve sung with some of my musical heroes in Gospel music, but I would love to sing a song with Steve Perry! The emotion in his voice has always moved me.” Ladd adds, “I’ve also always wanted to sing at a Billy Graham crusade.”

Renee’ Barham of Daystar promotions, says, “I am so blessed to be booking for Steve. Every place that books him wants him back! Not only is he an amazing vocalist, he is one of the most sincere and devoted Christians I have ever known. God has given him such a beautiful heart and he shares it so willingly. Whether sharing in testimony in concerts, working at The Bridge Ministry, or at his home church and just encouraging people online, it’s a beautiful thing to witness. He is the real deal!”

Terry Hudson, Steve Ladd’s manager, is also a big fan. He says, “It’s no secret that Steve has a powerful voice but even more powerful is his message. His primary focus for recording his current CD is to let the world know the message that ‘Jesus Saves’.” That song is a terrific cut with a contemporary message. Auke Bijlsma, CD reviewer for website SGM Radio.com, writes: “It starts kind of corny. But then the chorus kicks in and wow! I love the counterparts Michael English sings around Steve. The next verse is amazing, and then that chorus again, more intense than the first, but not overdone. As for the harmonies – well, Eagles, look

Page 59: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

out. Song’s title? Jesus Saves!”

Ladd says, “My favorite song to sing live is a tie between Heaven and Not Guilty. I love to see songs minister to people and those two are definitely anointed songs and I can see that they move people when I perform them.” The CD ends with “It’s Amazing,” Bijlsma says, “This album is to me simply that, ‘amazing’. It is amazing how Steve sings and how the pickers and singers make Steve even look better than he already is. I never liked the pairing of the words ‘simply’ and ‘amazing’; to me there’s nothing simple about grace, that’s what makes it kind of amazing! The last song is absolutely amazing, talks about the most amazing fact of life itself, that there’s Grace greater than all our sins. It’s amazing.”

Sharing this amazing gift of Grace is Steve Ladd’s ministry. He says, “ I have a burning passion to see people receive Jesus Christ! I truly feel like we are in the last days and I don’t feel like we are doing enough to reach the lost.” His main message he desires to share with his audience he says is ‘simple’. “Romans 10:9 says, ‘If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.’ We all need Jesus!”

As Steve Ladd shares his message with a Gospel audience and his life with the Bridge ministry, it’s easy to see that the love of Jesus is flowing from him, as he continues to give back what the Lord has so freely given to him. Sharing the gift of God this season to others is something we can all learn from the life of Steve Ladd.

My subject this month is from Psalm 121 and it’s “How to Find Hope in a World That Is Hopeless.” In verse one of Psalm 121 we see that if we are going to find hope we must LIFT UP OUR HEADS! “I will lift up my eyes to the hills from whence cometh my help. My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.” There is no hope in looking down. There is only help and hope in the Lord! Folks I learned it the hard way…any idiot can tell you when everything is wrong. It takes a born again, Spirit filled, Bible believing, blood washed, on their way to Heaven and eyes on the prize Christian to survey the situation and look UP with HOPE for the future. No wonder people are upset at their government. A lot of us are disappointed in ourselves! Well, the simple truth is that we can only be up-set and disappointed in what we THOUGHT was going to help us and we can’t help ourselves and we (as believers) should have never been looking to the government for our help because our help comes from the Lord!

A lot of people have reduced our Christianity to a reli-gion of Do’s and Don’ts. If I DO this God will be happy with me. If I DON’T do that then God will be happy with me. Hey…there is nothing…NOTHING you can do in your own strength that will EVER impress God. The truth is that we think WE can help ourselves or that someone…the gov-ernment or whoever is going to help us and only God can do that. Our help comes from the Lord! Any time we are disappointed in somebody or something it is because we were depending on them for something they couldn’t do anyway…HELP us. Psalm 121 also tells us that our God is awake. Verse 3 says it, verse 4 says it…our God does not slumber nor sleep. It 1989 He was awake when my father passed away. I know He was awake because I was talking to Him and He was listening to me. He was awake when President Obama was elected to office. He was awake when he took the oath of office. He was awake when Healthcare legislation

passed. You’re single and don’t like it but God is awake. You have received bad news from the doctor but God is awake and He will be your helper in the midnight! He will lead you to the right mate for life. Why? He’s awake! Six times in this Psalm it says “He will KEEP you!” He will keep you because He is awake. Presidents, kings, dictators, preachers and potentates may all go to sleep for a while but our God never sleeps!  While the Healthcare bill (that many of you hate) was passing God was awake. I know He was awake because we had two to join and one was baptized at our church that SUNDAY! He wasn’t feeling defeated and deciding to nap on Monday to recover from a bad weekend. I know He was awake because TWO were saved in my office Monday afternoon AFTER the Health care legislation had passed!! A young lady who was so shy that when she prayed to receive Jesus I had to look up and watch her mouth move to make sure she was praying. That’s OK because she didn’t have to roust God out of a “long winter’s nap” to get His attention. He was awake and as she received Him, He received her. A young man with tears streaming down his face prayed to ask Christ into his heart and God didn’t throw back the covers and with a disgusted look on His face kick His feet and reluctantly get out of bed. No…He was awake and heard the young man cry out for mercy and help and He helped him with salva-tion that only He could give! Do all the politics you want to do but please don’t ever fear that our God can’t help or that He is somehow asleep for He can help and He never slumbers nor sleeps! As the old spiritual says…He’s an on time God…yes He is!

And I will look to the hill where my helper is and I will know…HE is awake An old timer once told me “the Lord is awake and if He’s awake…there’s no since BOTH of us be-ing up…I’m going to bed!”

The Gold City Quartet has had numerous configurations of talented singers. However, nobody has to tell the group’s current members that.“I was very familiar with them,” current tenor singer Robert Fulton said. “When I was singing with my local group (Justified), we would say, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to even have a tryout with them?’ We used to have those conversations … I have the answers now.”

Fulton isn’t the only one with an affinity for the Gold City of yesteryear. “I rode in the truck with my dad, and it was Gold City cassette tapes or Kingsmen cassette tapes or the Anchormen,” Gold City pianist Bryan El-liott said. “I was more of a Gold City and a Cathedrals fanatic than anybody else.”

Lead singer Chip Pullen added, “Growing up in Ala-bama, that’s all we did … we went to see Gold City. Momma dragged me to see Gold City. They had so many great hits.”

They all have their favorites, such as their favorite Gold City configuration:

“Steve (Ladd), Jonathan (Wilburn), Danny (Riley) and

Aaron (McCune) … I miss that era,” Pullen said. “I loved it.”

“Jonathan Wilburn and Bruce Taliaferro are my favor-ite lead singers they’ve had. Ivan (Parker) is great. It’s humbling to know I stand on stage and sing the same songs they made popular. I can’t be them. I know that. I just try to do them justice so that somebody can get the message out of the song.”

Speaking of songs, among the favorites are … “‘Mid-night Cry’ sounds like a default answer, but that’s it,” Fulton said. “We sang that with my local group. I re-corded it with my local group. That’s the one I remem-ber that was a Gold City song.”

Pullen added, “It’s ‘Midnight Cry’ … that and ‘It’s Still the Cross.’ I love to hear Danny sing ‘It’s Still the Cross.’”

Finally, what are their favorite albums?“Double Take (Live) and Pillars of Faith, those were the two favor-ites,” Elliott said. “I knew Double Take by heart.”

Even the group’s staple, bass singer Tim Riley, has his favorites.“We have recorded so many songs for the last

33 years,” Tim Riley said. “I like songs that have a little gallop to it, and I love good harmony. I love to sing ‘When He Reached Down His Hand For Me.’ I love to sing ‘Then We Shall Sing’ and any Kyla Rowland song that we recorded. I like ministering. I like songs that lift up and glorify the Lord. That moves me, and I feel like we’re doing some good.”

The group members’ biggest favorite is Tim Riley.“My dad is back with us, has been for four years,” baritone singer, emcee and group manager Daniel Riley said. “Seeing him being honored the way he has, getting inducted into the SGMA (Southern Gospel Music As-sociation) Hall of Fame … it’s special to me. I’ve seen the commitment that it’s taken. I have witnessed the grueling work it took. For me, it’s like, ‘oh, ok, they get it.’He’s humble. He feels humbled. He feels honored that’s he’s being recognized. I’m just really thankful. A lot of people don’t get honored until they’re dead.”

The newcomers feel honored to stand on stage with the Southern Gospel legend. “There is only one,” Fulton said of Tim Riley. “Honestly, it’s sort of shocking. The first few weeks out, I was constantly floored when he would go down and hit his low stuff. I wanted to bust out laughing, because I just couldn’t believe it.”

Pullen added, “I stand back on the stage and listen to him sing ‘Under Control’ and ‘I Get Down.’ I’m like, ‘Gosh man, I’m a fan.’ He’s just phenomenal to listen to. He’s been here so long. He’s what everybody tries to accomplish, having that career.”

Elliott is a three-year veteran but has the same take as

his cohorts.“Tim Riley is incredible,” Elliott said. “Tim does his slide down on ‘I’m Not Giving Up.’ You can’t not be a fan of Tim Riley.” However, Elliott is quick to point out that it’s not just the vocal abilities that gives him an elevated respect for Tim Riley. “Tim is the cool-est old guy in the world,” Elliott said. “He cuts up. He jokes as if it was somebody my age. I can sit and talk to him about things – and there’s such a big age gap – as if I was talking to Danny or whoever. He has that ‘well, let me give you some advice,’ and you’ll take it. I’ll talk to my dad about stuff, and then, I’ll talk to him about it. It’s usually the same. You can go fishing with him. He’s just the coolest old guy. He’s like a George Younce.”

Tim Riley added, “They’re good boys. I love helping these younger boys.”In addition to having a willing-ness to help his fellow group members, Tim Riley has extended advice to some of the industry’s most well-re-spected bass singers.“I love to work with these younger bass singers,” Tim Riley said. “I’ve been working with Jeff Chapman (of the Kingdom Heirs) for years. Jeff is a willing ear. He wants to learn. He’s like a sponge.”

Soaking it up

The Riley father-son tandem are thoroughly enjoy-ing the time that they are spending together since Tim Riley returned to the group after a five-year hiatus.“It’s not commonplace to me,” Daniel Riley said. “Standing beside him every night, I’m still amazed. When he goes down and busts one of those notes, I still have those my-jaw-is-on-the-floor moments. To be able to do what I love and to be able to do it with my dad, many people can’t say that.People tell me all the time, ‘don’t take it for granted,’ and I don’t. My brother (Doug Riley) was killed eight years ago in a car accident. I’m thankful he and I got to travel together. I know Dad won’t be here forever, but he might outlive me. Regardless, I’ll al-

Page 66: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

ways have these experiences of being able to sing with him. It’s something I’ll always have.”

Tim Riley added, “It’s the greatest honor in the world. I thank God every day. My hope is that he’ll be able to carry on the legacy. ”Tim Riley returned to the group in 2009, and he’s seen the dynamic within the group change considerably over the years. “It’s been a joy,” Tim Riley said of traveling with his son. “Things I’ve helped him with – his presentation and his phrasing … how much vibrato to put into something – he’s grown up, and he’s gotten ahead of me now. He’s telling me stuff now. Besides being a good Christian and father, he’s just a good man.”

At age 68, Tim Riley has no set time frame as for how long he’ll remain with the group. “It’s all according to my health,” Tim Riley said. “I feel pretty good as long as I keep my diabetes in check, and I have spinal stenosis.”

Tim Riley’s hope for Daniel Riley – who handles the managerial responsibilities for the group along with Chuck Howe (the group’s sound engineer and road manager) – is for the group to remain strong once the time comes when Tim Riley leaves the group.“I want Gold City to be able to carry on,” Tim Riley said. “My prayer is that people will support them after I’ve gone. It’s inevitable that I’m not going to live forever. They are good boys. They are going to have a good group. It hurts my heart to hear people say that when I’m done that it’s over. God’s going to take me out of here one day, but they’re going to go on.”

Wide-eyed dreaming

Pullen is the newest addition to the group, having signed on in mid-October after Jerry Pelfrey departed to relaunch his family group, the Pelfreys.“My grandfather taught music schools all over Alabama, and my dad is

a pastor,” the 25-year-old Pullen said. “I’ve wanted to sing. I’ve given demos to a lot of people. You never think it’s going to happen. You get the call one day, and it just works out. God allows you to do what you’ve always wanted to do.”

Prior to joining Gold City, Pullen sang with the Anchor-men for a year.“I got in contact with them and met them at a singing (this summer),” Pullen said. “I told them if they ever needed anybody that I’d like to try out. (Danny) called me a couple weeks later, and I got the job.”

The past two months have been a whirlwind for Pullen.“It was like, ‘This is not real,’” Pullen said. “It’s been great. Getting to know them personally, they are great to travel with...Chuck, Robert, everybody...they’re great people. They want to help you get better. They’re not trying to make you look bad. They’re all about mak-ing you a better person and a better singer. They treat you like you’re somebody.”

Pullen wants to help maintain the group’s standard of excellence.“I try to work really hard at learning my part, learning how to jell with them,” Pullen said. “That’s what it’s about. I want to be able to stay and be something. I want Gold City to be held together for a long period of time. I’d love to know I was a part of it. So many greats have come through and done it.”

“Singing with Gold City doesn’t get normal though. I mean, it’s Tim Riley and Danny Riley.” The 27-year-old Fulton – who joined the group as a full-time member in April – can relate to Pullen’s excitement and to the tran-sition. “Some of the best vocalists I’ve ever heard in my life have been in this group,” Fulton said. “That’s excit-ing for me to be a part of the legacy, to be the newest

guy in that thing. That’s also a lot of responsibility. It’s enjoyable. It’s a lot of work. Anybody who thinks that it isn’t doesn’t have any idea. It’s a lot of long hours. It’s a lot of travel. Singing really is hard work. You are exhausted and worn out at the end of the day, but if you see one person changed for the better or one soul come to the kingdom of God because of what you did, every mile and hardship and bus fire is all worth it.”

Fulton has been singing Southern Gospel Music since he was 19, performing for four years with Forgiven Four and for more than two years with the Palmetto State Quartet. “I always had a drive to sing,” Fulton said. “I’ve loved music since I was kid. I sang in the choir, the show choir. I sang and studied music in col-lege. I started doing the quartet thing in college as well. That kind of started the process.”

He had been away from the industry for 18 months before trying out with Gold City. “Going from the weekend warrior to full time on the road and living on a bus, it’s definitely different,” Fulton said. “I went on the road in January to fill in with Palmetto State, just for the week. One of them let me know there was an open slot (with Gold City). I called Beckie Simmons, who is the booking agent and said, ‘How do I get a demo to Danny?’ Then, it was two or three weeks of e-mails and phone calls.”

Like Pullen, Elliott has family members who were im-mersed in Southern Gospel Music.“My dad (Ronnie Elliott) plays,” Elliott said. “He played for local and re-gional groups. I just always thought it would be cool to play for groups we heard on the radio. The other week, they showcased on us on TV. He texted me and said,

‘Gold City is on TV.’ He said, ‘Boy, I’m really proud of you.’ He had chances to go with different groups, but he was more of a family man. I guess he’s living vicari-ously through me.”

Elliott – who turns age 28 on Dec. 19 – previously played for the Perrys, after starting his career as a 16-year-old pianist with the Anchormen.“When I got in the business, Gold City was at the top of my list,” Elliott said. “I branched out and got more into other groups and their style, but being with Tracy and Libbi (Stuffle, of the Perrys), that matured me in how I think and how I look at the business part of it and the minis-try part of it. Everybody here is great to travel with. It’s incredible. I get away from (thinking about) it some-times. My sister – a couple of weeks ago – said, ‘You realize, you’re playing for a group we grew up listening to.’ Then, I’ll realize, ‘Yeah, that is pretty cool.’”

Still aglimmer

Gold City has experienced its share of adversity as of late.“We love what we do,” Daniel Riley said. “It has been extremely challenging over the past five to six years. But what’s exciting is how God sustains you when you come home with less money than you need to meet your budget … somehow you always make it. For me, God has used that to teach me a lot about how faithful he is. Whatever the situation is, if this is what he wants, he’s going to make it happen. That’s excit-ing.”

The group has experienced numerous personnel chang-es during that time frame.“That has been very, very stressful,” Daniel Riley said. “You think you’re stable, and then somebody leaves. There have been guys that

Page 68: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

have come and realized, ‘I can’t handle being on the road.’ Then, there’s other situations. It’s very hard. From a group standpoint, it takes you time to build a blend. You can’t ever settle in on anything if you can’t keep people. It’s really hard to find people, because you’re not just looking for somebody who can do the job singing. You’re looking for somebody with the right heart, somebody whose personality meshes. There’s so many different factors.”

The group also endured a bus fire in May, but they are thankful to have a bus for traveling. “It’s comfortable,” Fulton said of the bus. “It’s 45 feet long, and there’s six guys living on it. It’s still a bus. It’s a blessing though. It would be hard to do it without it.”

Despite the personnel changes and other trials, the group has continued to move forward. In fact, Gold City is hoping to release a new project next spring.“A lot of people will come to a concert that may not come to a church service,” Fulton said. “You have a platform for the kingdom of God using the gifts he’s given you.

You realize that even though this is music, it’s also a very deep self-expression. To see that connect with people and see that make a change in people, that is very humbling. You realize the awesome responsibility that comes with doing what you do.”

Tim Riley added, “I see (Southern Gospel) changing. It’s evolving, but God doesn’t change. The message is the same. Why should Christian music change? The message never changes. You just find different ways to set it up … but everything evolves.”

Gold City is adapting to those changes.

Such news from the prophet, Isaiah: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Tis the season to be jolly and sing Christmas carols!

“O little town of Bethlehem… how still we see thee lie away in a manger-- no crib for a bed-- the little Lord Jesus lay down His sweet head. Hark! the her-ald angels sing, “Glor-o-o-o-o-o-o-ri-a!” How beau-tifully and effortlessly these carols string together to tell the story of One who came down from glory on a Silent Night bringing Joy to the World.

Do you have JOY? I have heard it said that joy is an acronym for putting Jesus first, Others second and You last. This does not, however, mean that we allow ourselves to be neglected, abused or ill-treated. It simply means that we follow the great-est commandment taught by Jesus. He tells his dis-ciples in the Gospel of John, “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you…by this shall all men know that ye are my disciples.” In Mathew 22:36-40 he adds, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the

Prophets.”

Imagine that-- on two commandments, hang all the law and prophets! If we all followed two straightforward and even simple rules, there would be no violation of the law! If you think about it, every violation of the law involves either harming ourselves, someone else, or God. Heaven forbid it! Could we only grasp the depth of His love for us and each other, I believe that we would not intentionally cause or bring harm to others. To quote directly from the Bible,

“ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Selah … a moment to reflect on that truth.

So, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas this year as you remember that Love Came Down at Christmas on that O so Holy Night!

Hope’s Journey, a mixed trio from Alabama, has the powerhouse vocals and the tight mix of family groups like The Goodmans or the Hinsons, though they aren’t related and their current lineup hasn’t been around long enough to attain the legendary status of such groups. Vonda Easley is a singer and songwriter and the founder of Hope’s Journey, as well as being one of the sweetest ladies you could ever meet. She has brought together a group as fine as any on the road today, so be sure to look them up when they are in your area, as well as requesting their music on the radio. I was thrilled that they agreed to a short Questions and Answers With Rob for SGN Scoops.

1. Vonda, please introduce each member of your group to our readers and tell us something special about each one.

Vonda Easley: Chris Clay is actually on his second tour of duty with Hope’s Journey. It was a pretty easy decision to hire him because he already knew a bunch of the songs. He is a wonderful Christian man, a great father, husband and a real positive influence everywhere we go. Then there is Tracy Kelly. This is her first job

singing out front and she is proof that if you just do what God calls you to do, where He calls you to do it, good things happen. God very seldom picks from people who do nothing and that is the case with Tracy. She did everything and anything Hope’s Journey need-ed and one day we needed a singer and there she was. These two do a super job for us.

2. Vonda, can you please share with us how Hope’s Journey got its start?

Vonda Easley: As a family, we have always sung together. A lot of Country music was sung in our home when I was a kid. My Momma and Daddy would have all the neighbors over on the weekends and it would be an old fashioned hoedown. They always sang some gos-pel too and this love of music was kind of placed in me as a child. As my daughter Ashley got older, she was so very talented, and I had a desire to sing and minister hope to people because of how the Lord had healed me from cancer, so we just started singing anywhere people asked us to sing. The rest is history.

3. For each member of the group: What are your musi-

Hope’s JourneyQ&A With

By Rob Patz and Lorraine Walker

Page 72: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

cal influences?

Tracy Kelley: My musical influences were my Daddy and Momma. My Daddy sang in a gospel group and played the piano and guitar, and my Momma played the piano in church. My Daddy had a love for music and always had me singing.

Chris Clay: As far as gospel music goes, I love the Booth Brothers. Their harmonies are so tight and the way they handle themselves on stage is fantastic. Any-body on Bill Gaither’s Homecoming schedule is great to kind of follow. But there’s really not one influence that I try to be just like. I take bits and pieces of a lot of artists and try to combine them to come up with my own sound.

Vonda Easley: My musical influences go back to those Saturday night get-togethers at the house with the guitars and banjos and the fellowship of neighbors. I loved old-style Country and Gospel music and it is still the heartbeat of what I love today.

4. Vonda, please tell us the story of how God healed you of cancer. How is God working in your life today?

Vonda Easley: I have told this story so much that it has almost become second nature to me. I am a little like the Apostle Paul who didn’t want to tell too much about his visit to Heaven for fear it would trivialize it.

When I got pregnant with Ash I was so very excited and apprehensive at the same time. When she was born I was told that I had ovarian cancer, which for a woman is like a death sentence. The doctors had their say, then, as my friend Jeff Steele would say, I experienced one of those ‘BUT GOD’ moments. The hand of the Great Physician came on me and healed me! I am a good bit older now and I’m still here and still singing for the glory of the Lord! I don’t share my story every night but I share it sometimes and I also share it in Women’s Conferences. Invariably God uses it to bless others who are walking in a similar valley. I share the goodness of God even in the dark place. He IS the answer to all situ-ations.

5. Tracy, how did your upbringing as a preacher’s kid help you through your difficult life moments?

Tracy Kelley: As a preacher’s child I learned that the only true source of happiness and peace was in God.

6. Chris, how do you balance your road life with Hope’s Journey and your home life with a young child?

Chris Clay: That’s a tough one. Cadence (my daughter) is four now, so she’s at an age that everything is excit-ing. I try to spend as much time as I can with her, and sometimes it’s not enough, but we get to go on “daddy-daughter dates” and I love getting one-on-one time with her. My wife Salina and Cadence give up a lot of time, but it’s a sacrifice that’s worthy because this is what the Lord has called us to do.

7. How would you describe your style of music? When someone attends a Hope’s Journey concert, what can they expect?

Chris Clay: I hope that when people come to hear Hope’s Journey, they’re not just hearing Hope’s Jour-ney. So many people are hurting, and many come to see and hear us and leave with a word from God. I don’t want people to say, “Wow, those are great singers;” I want them to say “Wow, they serve a great Savior.”

Vonda Easley: Our music is positive, uplifting to the believer and convicting to someone who doesn’t know

Page 73: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

the Lord. Musically we are Southern Gospel but so many that hear us say that though they don’t really like Southern Gospel they love our music and us. What they are really saying is they don’t really know what South-ern Gospel is!

8. For each member of the group: Which person from the First Christmas do you most relate to and why? (e.g. Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth, the Shepherds, etc.)

Chris Clay: I think Joseph stands out in my mind be-cause he doesn’t get talked about a lot. He was the guy chosen to raise the Son of God and even though every-one paid (and still pays) more attention to Mary and Jesus, Joseph chose to continue doing the Father’s will. I may not be the biggest name, or the most popular, but I have been chosen, and I will continue to do the will of my Father.

Tracy Kelly: I can most relate to Mary because I too have felt the joy of giving birth to a precious baby boy and felt that ‘mother›s love’.

Vonda Easley: I think I relate to Mary, being a woman and all. She faced an uncertain future and I have too at times. She had a medical situation develop, as she became pregnant without a man’s involvement, and had to navigate some really uncertain waters. God saw her through, and used her, and He has done the same for me.

9. Are any of you involved in any type of mission, at home or abroad (e.g. soup kitchen, adopting a child

overseas)? If so, why?

Chris Clay: I have been on an occasional trip to The Bridge in Nashville, but not much missionary work. My wife has been on two trips recently. She went to Miami to work with Haitian refugees, and last summer she went to Belize for eight days to help build a pas-tor’s home and help with their church. She has been an inspiration to me for following the Lord and sacrificing to go on these trips.

Vonda Easley: We have been involved with a little girl named Ava here close to home. She has a disease called NKH (don’t ask me to pronounce it) and she has literally been in a fight for her life since birth. Doctors said she would never see her third birthday. What a party we had for her on that day. I co-wrote a song with our friend Dr. Jeff Steele called ‘Ava’s Song’. It be-came a chart song for us and the proceeds from the sale of that song have gone to help Ava and her family. We do a number of fundraisers for worthy causes whenever we can and believe that is one of the reasons God has blessed our ministry like He has.

10. For each of you: What is your favorite line from your favorite Christmas carol?

Chris Clay: From ‘Mary Did You Know’: ‘When you kissed your little baby, you kissed the face of God.’ – Mary Did You Know, written by Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene, 1984/ c.1991 Word Music

Tracy Kelly: From ‘O Holy Night’: ‘Oh holy night, the stars are brightly shining. This is the night of our dear Savior’s birth.” These lines make me think of the night our Lord and Savior Jesus was born. – O Holy Night, written by Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure in 1847

Vonda Easley: From ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’: I like ‘Oh come let us adore Him.’ In a world filled with di-saster on every hand the simple invitation of Christmas is to come and adore Christ the Lord. I believe when we introduce Him in all of His glory to this world that they will, like us, fall in love with our Lord and worship Him as well, Christ the Lord. – Adeste Fidelis, written by John Wade and John Reading, 1700’s.

Hope’s Journey has a fantastic future ahead and with their music, message and ability to communicate their deep faith, they are sure to achieve their goals and dreams. Please visit them on the web to find out more at http://www.hopesjourneyonline.com/# .

Music Reviews for Decemberby Sandi Duncan Clark

A popular Christmas song proclaims… “It’s the most wonderful time of the year…” and I think most of us would definitely agree! From the worship, all the gatherings, the music and the wonderful aromas, to the hustle and bustle of our self-imposed requisite of shopping, it’s our most cherished time of our year. Having worked in the retail business most of my adult life, I often find myself strolling out to Center Court at the Mall to enjoy the entire madness of it all! This includes watching Moms and Dads bring their little darlings to sit on Santa’s lap for pictures. Some children love it, others absolutely do not! (Smile!)Christmas music begins early at our house and there are two channels on my SiriusXm radio that play continually throughout the entire season. All our favorite Christmas CDs come out as early as October. A few friends have said they tire of the music beginning so early in the stores and malls, but I often find myself…and other customers who might be shopping, singing along! This surely often brings a smile from total strangers and enhances the holiday spirit!December is also one of my favorite times to share music with you, our readers. Various artists present their own approach to traditional songs and carols as well as some original tunes and it all contributes to our enjoyment of the holiday season. This month we have a huge selection of music to share with you, to inform you of what’s available for your listening pleasure. A Merry Christmas wish comes from the Clark Family to yours. May you truly understand the true happiness of the season and the Joy of Jesus!

INTO THE SILENT NIGHTFor King & Country

Fervent/Curb, Word Label GroupProducer: Seth Mosley

A unique and enjoyable arrangement of a favorite Christmas Carol; ‘Angels We Have Heard On High’ introduces the listener to this Australian born brother duo, Joel and Luke Smallbone. This song sets the stage for three other songs on their Christmas CD. Music arrangements are all distinctive and infectious. Their music appeals to anyone who enjoys individuality in music and integrity in lyrics. ‘Baby Boy,’ written especially for the group by Producer Seth Mosley, is a signature song celebrating the birth of Christ for the salvation of the world. It is a beautiful song, using a combination of unique instruments. While their style is more progressive contemporary, their music is appealing to anyone taking time to hear the lyrics and the message. The title song, ‘Into The Silent Night’ is another original from Mosley and Matt Hammit, marking the true gift of Christmas. I was touched by the lyrics

Page 76: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

and the message, and the music just brought that to heart. I’m definitely addicted to a variety of music…anything I can understand and enjoy. This was my first experience hearing For King & Country, and I’m a fan. Visit their web site, www.forkingandcountry.com to hear some of their music and to purchase your copy of INTO THE SILENT NIGHT.

THE HEART OF CHRISTMASKingdom HeirsSonlite Records

The title song has a wonderful message for each of us. ‘The Heart Of Christmas,’ a song written by Matthew West, is brought to life by the Kingdom Heirs. This song along with nine others brings the true meaning of Christmas home to our hearts and lives.

The song selection features several favorite well-known Christmas songs, as well as some wonderful new material that this quartet executes with perfection. Their acapella version of ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’ prompts ones’ vision of villagers caroling on a snowy eve.

While ‘If Every Day Was Like Christmas’ is a beautiful song, it has a melancholy feel when one thinks of the state our world is in and how the peace of Christmas brings a better world. The Kingdom Heirs do a great job on this one. ‘The Man With The Bag’ jogs the memory of small kids and big kids alike, to be good because “Santa” knows what we’ve prayed for and wished for all year!

When I first read the song titles, I thought ‘A Way In A Manger,’ was a typo, and thought I would hear the traditional ‘Away In A Manager.’ However, Geron Davis, Gerrica Davis and Evan Milby have written a wonderful song by this name; ‘A Way In A Manger.’

I was blown away! These are the words I heard:

“It was the night that Mercy’s gates opened up

It was the hope that Heaven had dreamed of

And it was such a simple place giving birth to Grace

When God made a way in a manger.”

Another favorite is ‘Little Baby Boy.’ The joyous production on this song had me singing it over and over again, long after the music stopped! The album ends with a medley of wondrous carols completing the story of Christ’s birth: ‘O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,’ ‘Silent Night’ and ‘Joy To The World.’ What a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas…with the Kingdom Heirs’ THE HEART OF CHRISTMAS.

Vocals are on the mark, arrangements are outstanding, music tracks compliment the vocals making for one of the most enjoyable Christmas recordings I’ve heard this year. Visit the quartet’s web site www.kingdomheirs.com for your copy of the CD.

ANGEL BAND: THE CHRISTMAS SESSIONSAndrew Greer

Lucid Artist, Ma’M RecordingsProducer: Chris Kimmerer

Everyone should hear this recording from an incredibly talented young man which features some of his friends in cameo appearances. I’ve enjoyed so much diversity in all the albums I’ve received this year and I don’t often say this, but I was blown away with Andrew Greer’s music. ANGEL BAND: THE CHRISTMAS SESSIONS has been added to my trusty vehicle on repeat play!

Page 77: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

From the soft guitar strains of ‘Do You See What I See,’ I was hooked on Andrew Greer’s vocals, the song arrangement (especially the background vocals!) and music. There is no big production, just simple acoustic instruments on a traditional Christmas song with a new sound.

Andrew has explained that his goal with this recording is to bring together all the faces of Christmas with these songs and arrangements, even the more melancholy moments. The recording features ‘Ave Maria’ in duet with Sandi Patty; a 16th century German Hymn ‘Low How A Rose E’re Blooming,’ translated into English as well as a sweet version of ‘The First Noel.’

The album ends with Andrew’s exquisite version of ‘Silent Night.’ This is an album worth having just for the calming effect the music has during a most hectic time of the year. This is sincerely a call to the true meaning of Christmas. Visit www.andrew-greer.com for a copy.

CHRISTMASFrancesca Battistelli

Fervent/Curb, Word Label GroupProducer: Ian Eskelin

You will immediately fall in love with this beautiful lady, her voice, the melodies and her joyful rendition of all these beautiful songs. From several traditional carols and Christmas songs, to a repertoire of her own material, Francesca Battistelli crafts each one with her own gift.

I now have a new favorite version of the well-known ‘The Christmas Song!’ Francesca has an up-beat, happy arrangement of this Mel Torme classic and I fell in love with it right away. The ambience continues

with two original songs; ‘Heaven Everywhere’ and ‘Christmas Is.’

‘Marshmallow World,’ a fun, simple song from the late 1940’s has an entertaining arrangement with lots of horns, drums and a big band that will bring out the child in everyone. Francesca sings ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ with a catchy swing arrangement. It puts one in the mood for family, fun and a wonderful Christmas!

Francesca Battistelli wrote ‘You’re Here,’ a song that delves into the thoughts of the young Virgin Mary on that long ago night when Baby Jesus was born. The recording finishes with a sweet adaptation of ‘Go Tell It On The Mountain.’

This is a CD/DVD set and you can enjoy Francesca singing all these songs in live concert, and have the CD to enjoy or share with someone else. I high recommend CHRISTMAS by Francesca Battistelli for your Christmas music collection. You will find it at your local Christian music store or by checking Francesca’s web site at www.francescamusic.com.

CHRISTMAS

The HageesDifference Media

Producers: Michael Sykes, Aaron Crabb

This recording heralds the first holiday album from one of Gospel music’s great musical families, The Hagees. Thirteen songs; a varied assortment of old Christmas favorites, Christmas Carols, and new songs offer a wonderful selection for the listener’s enjoyment.

Beginning with the beautiful ‘God With Us’ the Hagees have blessed us with thirteen special songs, each chosen for its particular meaning to the family.

Page 78: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

This album also charts the family’s growth since their very first time on stage. The children have matured vocally and Pastor John still enjoys singing and sharing that enjoyment with all Gospel music fans!

Pastor John is featured on ‘O Holy Night’ and ‘White Christmas,’ while each of his children is featured on songs of their own. Matthew sings a song he co-wrote with Aaron Wilburn titled ‘Glory To God.’ Both daughters, Trina and Sandy are powerful singers and bring several songs to life. These include ‘That Spirit Of Christmas,’ a song that Ray Charles made popular a number of years ago,’ and ‘A Baby Changes Everything,’ which are both very well done.

‘Silent Night’ and ‘O Little Town Of Bethlehem’ have traditional arrangements and the family harmony on both is rewarding. ‘Who Would Imagine A King’ rounds out a delightful album one will want to add to their Christmas music collection. The Hagees may be contacted at www.differencemedia.com for ordering this recording and for more information on this wonderful family and its music.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOUSidewalk Prophets

Fervent/Curb, Word Label GroupProducers: Jonathan Smith, Casey Brown

Bonus Cuts Producer: Ian Eskelin

Okay…from the minute the young voice said “Lights Please…” and the Christmas Bible Story from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” began…I was hooked! The wonder of it all mounted with the first song; ‘What A Glorious Night.’ ‘White Christmas’ follows with a cameo by none other than Francesca Battistelli! My evening just kept getting better! With an eclectic mix of original Christmas songs written by group members; happy songs we’ve enjoyed through the years, along with special carols

which celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, this is a very rewarding holiday recording.

These young men have their own renditions of ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,’ ‘Holly, Jolly Christmas,’ ‘What Child Is This’ and ‘Silent Night.’ They also sing one of Ray Charles’ favorite Christmas songs to perfection, ‘That Spirit of Christmas.’

‘Give Me Christmas,’ ‘Hey Moon, (written as a conversation with the moon, from the star that shown over Bethlehem on that special night)’ and ‘Merry Christmas To You, (the title song’) are all beautifully done.

‘Hope Was Born This Night’ and ‘Because It’s Christmas’ are bonus songs on this recording. Each has a tremendous message and are superbly arranged and presented. These last five songs were all written by group members.

From start to finish I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each song on MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU. You may share in this wonderful music from the Sidewalk Prophets by visiting their website at www.sidewalkprophets.com or check local Christian book store for a copy.

CHRISTMAS LIVEErnie Haase & Signature Sound

Stowtown RecordsProducers: Ernie Haase & Wayne Haun

CHRISTMAS LIVE is a fascinating presentation by

Page 79: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

one of Gospel music’s best loved quartets. It is a CD and DVD set for your total enjoyment! If this doesn’t put you in the mood for an incredible Christmas, I don’t know what will!

Signature Sound begins with the ‘wonderland’ of a ‘Marshmallow World,’ and follows with a song written by Ernie Haase, Wayne Haun and Joel Lindsey titled ‘Every Light That Shines At Christmas.’ This is the heart of Christmas!

CHRISTMAS LIVE shares the total delight of Christmas; the upbeat happy songs as well as the carols celebrating the birth of Christ. Everyone in the Carson Center in Paducah, Kentucky reveled in the music, the fun, as well as the praise of the evening. The crowd especially enjoyed Ernie’s Elvis impersonation when he sang ‘Blue Christmas!’

Wayne Haun is a master musician and producer, and orchestrated a beautiful evening for those in attendance. He also joins the group on a couple of songs, and allows us to enjoy his vocal talent as well as his expertise on the keyboards.

Bass singer Paul Harkey brought his baby boy to the stage while the group sang ‘Changed By A Baby Boy,’ written by Benjamin Gaither and Gloria Gaither. It was a very poignant moment during the concert.

This is a “must have” for every fan of Southern Gospel as well as fans of Ernie Haase and Signature Sound. It’s not only an awesome Christmas project, but just great quartet singing and lots of fun. Check out your local Christian Book Store for your copy or check out the group’s website, www.erniehaase.com.

YOUNGEr PERSPECTIVE

BY ERIN STEVENS

Ben Wolfe

It’s one thing to be the eldest son of the one and only Gerald Wolfe, but it’s another thing to willingly and genuinely want to be a part of your dad’s world of ministry. In the hustle and bustle of this holiday season, I had the joy of talking with Ben Wolfe this month. As you will discover in our interview, there are many facets to this stellar young man. He has carved out his own niche; from being a musician, to establishing his own graphic design business, and his talents seem to be unending. During this chilly winter season, why don’t you grab a cup of hot cocoa and join me as we take a small glimpse into Ben’s life…

Erin: What has it been like to grow up in an atmosphere of Gospel music?Ben: It’s all I’ve ever known, so I guess it’s normal for me. I like it because my brother and I get a chance to travel sometimes with our dad.

Erin: How often are you out traveling with Greater Vision?Ben: I’ve been doing a few tours lately. I try to go with them to special events while helping out too. I really have enjoyed being able to help at NQC, our Praise Fest events, Jubilee Tours, the Cathedral Family Reunion event, the Great Western Fan Festival along with a few others.

Erin: Who would you say has made a huge impact on your life personally?Ben: My dad. He’s always there for me when I need him. He’s a great example of what a Christian should be and he is very consistent.

Erin: I’m pretty sure I already know the answer to this question, but for the readers’ benefit… MAC or PC? And why?Ben: Mac. It’s so much easier to use. Erin: What was the driving force that launched your passion for graphic designing; kind of that

Page 82: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

I‘a-ha’ moment when you knew this is what you wanted to do?Ben: One day, Dad needed help with something. I had seen it done a few times before, and I like creating things, so I offered to help. I’ve been doing it since then!

Erin: What are 3 items you are hardly ever seen without?Ben: iPhone, iPad/laptop, glasses.

Erin: From snowboarding to videography and everything in between, what is your top hobby of choice?Ben: Well, I like both of those things, but I also enjoy playing drums and bass guitar. I’m also learning electric guitar. My favorite would have to be playing my bass. It’s usually the last thing I do at the end of the day.

Erin: It’s no secret that the Wolfe family loves all things Christmas! What are some of your favorite memories from Christmases gone by?Ben: Probably the Christmas that my Uncle Kyle Underwood came over dressed up as Santa Claus. My brother and I loved it! As he left, I ran to the window, just in time to see Uncle Kyle pulling away from our house. I yelled, “Dad! Santa drives a truck JUST LIKE Uncle Kyle’s!” We all still laugh about that story.

Erin: Keeping with that ‘holiday cheer’ theme, your family time always seems to center around ‘the happiest place on earth.’ Explain how you all came to be such Disney-aholics?Ben: Well, Mom and Dad went there on their honeymoon, so I suppose it goes back to them. We have always loved Disney, I guess it’s just in our genes! We all feel the same way about Disney - if we’re there, we’re already happy, even if we don’t get to do anything else. We love just getting to walk down Main Street, USA together.

Erin: This time of year is one of reflection, as another new year quickly approaches. What are a few “Ben Wolfe highlights” from 2013 that stand out to you the most?Ben: Traveling with Dad is probably the highlight of every year. This year, I was able to be a part of the Cathedral Family Reunion. That was an experience like no other. I felt very blessed to be a

part of such a memorable event.

Erin: Could you summarize for our readers what Jesus means to you personally, and how your relationship with Him impacts your life on a daily basis?Ben: As it is for every dedicated Christian, Jesus is the reason we live. He is the reason we are able to enjoy the things of life and He gives us hope for the future. I am thankful to get to serve the Lord on a daily basis in what I do. I think that even in my design work, I do that for Him as a small part of other people’s ministry. I am thankful for what Jesus does in my life every day and for the opportunities that He keeps giving me to serve Him. I know without Him I am nothing.

Isn’t that what this life is all about? I mean really, think about it for a moment. We were made for active fellowship with our Savior as we endeavor to lift Him up in all that we do, whether it’s standing on a stage as an artist, singing a gospel song, or designing the CD for that artist’s recording. You will never fully know who is being influenced by your witness until someday when He reveals the faces of the ones that came because of you. Remember this Christmas season as you get caught up in the twinkling splendor, to allow the Lord to shine through you in all that you do. Thanks again to Ben for his time this month, and thank YOU, loyal readers, who make our job here at SGN Scoops such a delight. From your Younger Perspective writer, I wish you a very Merry Christmas!

And that’s my take on it.

Page 84: December 2013 SGNScoops Magazine

The hustle and bustle of the holiday season is upon us. It’s undeniable that something is awakened within all of us and we are filled with childlike wonder. This stirring in our hearts deeply reminding us of a favorite yuletide carol or some other special holiday memory etched in our minds forever. With the greediness of Scrooge, retailers usher us right into one holiday after another without taking a breath between them, often losing ourselves as one slowly fades into the other. With each passing season the pressure is on to make Christmas bigger and better than the last one. We need more decorations, more lavish gifts, bigger parties etc…while the true meaning is being lost somewhere in the selfish shuffle. Where does it all end? This behavior only brings

fleeting happiness, negative bank accounts and more zeros at the end of our credit card statement, ultimately leaving us scrambling to make ends meet. Yet we still put on happy faces in spite of the emptiness that weighs heavily on us. I believe that the true spirit of Christmas can be experienced in the simple pleasures by maintaining our own family values and traditions, and by breaking away from what the world deems appropriate and acceptable. The age of the spectacular pre-fab artificial Christmas tree is here, complete with affixed continually-burning twinkling lights and snowy branches. Evergreen tree scent can even be purchased in aerosol form and sprayed about, adding more authentic ambiance. However, with all this effort they still hold no comparison to their living, sappy and naturally aromatic counterparts, in spite of all the lopsided branches and numerous imperfections. This only adds to their character. As a child I remember my family making the annual trek into our own woody backyard in search of the perfect tree. Armed with a handsaw we took turns sawing through the thick sticky trunk. As we proudly dragged our selection home we would sing “O Christmas Tree”. Our mother always had hot cider brewing and homemade cookies

waiting. We strung popcorn and cranberries for garland and construction paper cutouts for ornaments. Decades later I can hardly recall very many of my gifts; however, if I close my eyes and breathe in deeply I can still smell the freshly cut sappy, aromatic scent of the evergreen tree. I am immediately transported back to a simpler time of childhood pleasures where a comforting peace engulfs me……PRICELESS….

“The Lester’s have been doing this for 88 years,” said Brian Lester, “and 46 of those years have been here in the cave.” Behind him, rose a massive wall of dolomite rock. With its sponge like formation, it rose higher and higher until it met with the other sides of the cave and formed what has for generations been called “the ballroom.” In the center of the ceiling a disco ball sparkled its silver beam. Below that, a display of 1500 chairs filled with fans of Southern Gospel Music were seated to enjoy the 46th An-nual Fall Festival of Gospel Music. Locals call it the Lester’s Homecoming or “The Cave,” but either name is a proper representation of what takes place inside the cave every night for four days in mid-October.

The Lesters have been holding this festival at Meramec Caverns in Stanton, Missouri for the last 46 years. It all began when the cavern’s owner, Lester Dill, had the Lesters sing and a local pastor preach in the cave. Since then, the Lesters have been welcomed back every year to the cav-erns to sing, which is now their annual homecoming event. When you combine the history of the festival with Mera-mec Caverns attraction as the Jesse James Hideout, you have quite the vacation package laid out for a weekend! Folks from the area also enjoy coming into the caverns on Easter when the Lesters give a special presentation of the Easter story. With music, props and a full cast, the story of the cross is re-enacted every Resurrection Day in a spec-tacular drama where Brian Lester’s son, Jonathan, plays the part of Jesus.

This year, groups such as Karen Peck and New River, The Talleys, The Mark Trammell Quartet, Brian Free and Assur-ance, Gordon Mote, Big Mo, Tribute Quartet and The Perrys were featured in the evening concerts at the Fall Festival of Gospel Music, in addition to afternoon matinees with other artists. One of the matinees gathers all the former mem-bers of the Lesters together to tell stories, sing old songs and have fun in a true homecoming fashion. The event is emceed by Duane Garren (who traveled with the Lesters

early in his career and currently serves as their booking agent.)

The Lesters have a very strong focus for the homecom-ing; before each evening begins you can count on two things. First they will pray, and then one of the guests will sing the national anthem. Over the course of the weekend, vocalists like Lauren Talley Alvey and Karen Peck Gooch stepped up to mic as everyone rose to their feet as the anthem was sung. From that moment on, Gospel music filled the cave in beautiful harmonies. Wednesday, which is opening night, Tribute Quartet was first on stage, thrilling the crowd with their #1 hit “Good News From Jerusalem.” When they asked everyone to sing “Farther Along” with them, the sweetest strains filled the cave. Just after Tribute stepped off stage The Perrys sang. Having Libbi at the cave was definitely a highlight of the week. She shared her faith through the journey they’ve been on these past months. “God has been way too good to my family not to give Him praise,” she said, “If the storm of life blew in on you what would you do? Would you be able to stand? He’s teaching me what trusting Him means…” The message that every song portrayed came even more alive when you consider what this family and ministry has stood strong under this year. Ballads like “Through the Night,” “The Potter Knows the Clay” and “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” echoed through the caverns, but from where I was sitting, I saw the lyrics lived out…and lived well. There was a heaviness in the air, no doubt from the presence of the Holy Spirit, that stirred the audience to respond in worship. It was an incredible night of ministry!

The Lesters sang every night. This year, their mate-rial was mostly taken from their new project, LIFE IN THE LIGHT. “My Lord Will Lead Me Home,” “Hold On,” “Freedom Is Never Free” and many more resounded throughout the cave as they ministered to the fans.

On Thursday night we heard from the Talleys, The Diplo-

mats, The Mark Trammell Quartet and of course, our host group, the Lesters. The following night Gordon Mote made an appearance at the cave for the very first time. Fans enjoyed the great playing, singing and comedy Gordon brought to the stage. Karen Peck and New River were also singing Friday night and Karen was very excited to share with the crowd that she will be in another movie! Saturday evening came too soon; the lineup for the evening was The Hoppers and Brian Free and Assurance (BFA). It was a very unique concert. With Melissa Brady filling in for Kim Hopper and BFA “tenor-less” (Brian wasn’t feeling well and stayed on the bus) the evening gave attendees a rare experience.

Meramec Caverns has held many titles over the years. In the Civil War it was used as a saltpeter plant and later on, the hideout for outlaw Jesse James. During the Great Depression Era, locals would set up a dance floor in the middle of the ballroom and hold dances inside the cave during the summer because of the cool temperatures, but for the last 46 years, the cave has been used for a Gospel Sing. What a testimony to the gospel of Jesus Christ! If you would like to know more about The Lesters, visit them at www.thelesters.com. I attend many events and one thing this author has found to be true is that the Lesters have a genuine love for people. May the Lesters have another 46 years of proclaiming the gospel at “The Cave!”
