Volume 5, Issue 1 ST. JOHN’S CHURCH

P.O. Box 505 FISHERS ISLAND, NEW YORK 06390

December 2008

Dear Fishers Island,

It is with great pleasure that I introduce The Rev. Michael Edwin Spencer who comes to us for our season while re-taining his present position as Dean of the Chapel and Religious Life as well as Humanities Teacher at St. Paul’s School in Concord New Hampshire. Our search committee and our Vestry were all unanimous in our calling of Mi-chael to St. John’s.

Rev. Spencer is deeply thoughtful and engagingly personable, and those of us who have had the good fortune to meet and work with him are already very fond of him. Michael was raised in New Bedford, MA, graduated from Holy Cross, later Yale Divinity and then gained a Certificate in Anglican Studies at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale leading to ordination in Connecticut. Prior to his position at St. Paul’s, he served as Priest Assistant at St. John’s, Waterbury, CT and Chaplain of Taft School for 10 years after teaching at Tabor Academy. For a time he contemplated Jesuit priesthood until he met Amy and married. They have two children, Aidan and Katherine. Mi-chael’s academic and other honors are too numerous to list here. Suffice it to say he is bright and accomplished. Mi-chael is very much looking forward to meeting all of you and getting to know Fishers Island.

I must thank our search committee for their diligent and professional work, ably led by Jim Carney and Jennifer Par-sons. They had a well thought out, well managed process that has delivered an excellent result.

We are already planning for the 2009 season and setting the stage for a number of different opportunities to meet and get to know Michael both inside and outside church. Please join us in welcoming him and his family to St. John’s.

Highlights from the Christmas Senior Lunch

The Seniors enjoyed their annual visit from Santa as well as the Christmas carols sung by the Ele-mentary School kids. The Senior Lunch program from the Island Community Board is a great part of the winter, providing fellow-ship and great food!

Conservancy Announces “The Edwin Horning Research Grant for Environ-

mental Conservation”

This is the first of what we hope will be regular bi-monthly columns by the Fishers Island Conservancy, contain-ing news and information about our Is-land environment. In ensuing months, we expect to provide information to Fog Horn readers on many different subjects. Anticipated future topics include the re-sults of our Harbor water quality testing, news on the study of alternate sources of power, including potential wind power generation, what Island residents can do about their own mosquito control, how to identify and control invasive plants, and updates on surrounding areas of interest, including Plum Island.

We wish to devote this inaugural column, however, to announcing a new student grant designed to promote preser-vation and conservation of natural re-sources and named in honor one of Fish-ers Island’s most ardent and beloved con-

servationists, the late Ed Horning: The Edwin Horning Research Grant for Environmental Conservation.

Fishers Island School stu-dents from grades 7 to 12 are invited to apply for up to $500 of award money to finance a sci-ence/technology project related to the preservation and conservation of natural resources. Awards will be granted based on the quality, ingenu-ity and originality of the project, as determined by designated members of the Conservancy board, with the advice of the school’s science and technology faculty. The amount of the grant will vary according to pro-ject costs as well as the number of applicants.

Ed Horning was the long-time science teacher at the School as well as curator of the Ferguson Mu-seum and a member of the board of the Conservancy from its inception. His weekly nature walks during the

summer were treasured by old and young alike. Our hope is that the Horning Grant will continue Ed’s work instilling an appreciation of our envi-ronment among students.

Applications for this year’s awards are due on December 15. The application form, as well as informa-tion on the application process, is available at the “Latest News” section of the Conservancy’s web site, www.fishersislandconservancy.com.

The Conservancy is devoted to pre-serving, enriching and enhancing the natural resources of Fishers Island and its surrounding waters. Among other things, we manage and fund sev-eral conservation initiatives, including the non-toxic Mosquito Control Pro-gram, a study of Harbor waters and regular beach clean up efforts.

Cheerleading an ex-tra curricular activity led by Jill Paciorek (3rd/4th teacher) is open to boys and girls from 4t grade to 8th grade. The workshop was funded by the PTO and IPP. 14 students went.

Fishers Island School was named a Blue Ribbon School and economics’ teacher, Bernard B. Bartick, was named a Gold Star Teacher by WISE (Working in Support of Education). The awards were presented in New York City on November 4, 2008 at the High School of Economics and Finance. On this occasion the school was presented with a large banner and Bartick was presented with a Gold Star Teacher Certificate.

In the spring the following students passed the Financial Certification Test Developed by WISE:

One hundred percent passed. In order to be named a Gold Star Teacher, ninety percent had to pass. All students have passed the exam for the past two years.

The Financial Literacy Program, launched by WISE as an initiative of the New York Financial Literacy Coalition, pro-motes the teaching of personal finance in high schools. The program’s goals are to:

• Increase the number who are financially literate

• Improve the quality of financial instruction

• Provide recognition to teachers, students and schools for excellence

Students study the following topics:

• Money and Income

• Budgeting and Planning
