SCTE CONTEXTA context of disadvantage• The College and its community, located in the northern suburbs of
Geelong, is characterised by high levels of social disadvantage. • The 2013 ICSEA has 73% of students in the bottom quartile and only 1% in
the top quartile. • The parent population is characterised by high unemployment, single
parent families and high mobility. The Student Family Occupation (SFO) Index range within the College is between 0.7 and 0.9
• The community reflects a diversity of learners that include students from non-English speaking backgrounds and a significant indigenous population.
• There is a significant enrolment of student with learning disabilities and differences some of whom are funded under the Program for Students with Disabilities.
• The college also has students who are identified as gifted and talented.

LESSONS LEARNED• The survey data provided evidence of a positive effect on
SCTE PSTs’ perceived preparation (against the standards) compared to PSTs who were not in the SCTE model.
• This positive effect was supported by:
– PST interviews
– Graduate interviews
– Leadership and mentor interviews
– Employability

LESSONS LEARNEDDifficulty attributing impact on student learning
• Leadership and teacher interviews reported positive impact on:
– Student engagement
– Literacy
– Science
– Student Aspirations
• Complexity of multiple partnerships and programs makes it difficult to isolate impact of individual PST’s activity on overall school data
• Changing culture and new programs emerging

LESSONS LEARNEDImpact on current teachers• PSTs’ innovative units of
work changing teachers’ practice
• Greater engagement with the professional standards and understanding about their benefits and ‘limits’
• Increased understanding about the complexity of university life and ITE provision
